  • ASP.NET MVC application architecture "guidelines"

    I'm looking for some feedback on my ASP.NET MVC based CMS application architecture. Domain Model - depends on nothing but the System classes to define types. For now, mostly anemic. Repository Layer - abstracted data access, only called by the services layer Services Layer - performs business logic on domain models. Exposes view models to the controllers. ViewModelMapper - service that translates back and forth between view models and domain models Controllers - super thin "traffic cop" style functionality that interacts with the service layer and only talks in terms of view models, never domain models My domain model is mostly used as data transfer (DTO) objects and has minimal logic at the moment. I'm finding this is nice because it depends on nothing (not even classes in the services layer). The services layer is a bit tricky... I only want the controllers to have access to viewmodels for ease of GUI programming. However, some of the services need to talk to each other. For example, I have an eventing service that notifies other listener services when content is tagged, when blog posts are created, etc. Currently, the methods that take domain models as inputs or return them are marked internal so they can't be used by the controllers. Sounds like overkill? Not enough abstraction? I'm mainly doing this as a learning exercise in being strict about architecture, not for an actual product, so please no feedback along the lines of "right depends on what you want to do". thanks!   • How to wrap text of html button with fixed width

    I just noticed that if you give a html button a fixed width, the text inside the button is never wrapped. I've tried it with word-wrap, but that cuts of the word even though there are spaces available to wrap on. How can I make the text of an html button with a fixed width wrap like any tablecell would? <td class="category_column"> <input type="submit" name="ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$DataList1$ctl12$ProCat_NameButton" value="Roos Sturingen / Sensors" id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_DataList1_ctl12_ProCat_NameButton" class="outset" style="height:118px;width:200px;font-size:18px;color:#7F7F7F;width:200px;white-space:pre;" /> </td> the css classes do nothing but adding borders and modify the padding. If I add word-wrap:break-word to this button, it will wrap it like this: Roos Sturingen / Sen sors And I dont want it to cut of in the middle of a word if it is possible to cut it off between words.   • Trouble defining method for Javascript class definition.

    I'm somewhat new to object oriented programming in Javascript and I'm trying to build a handler object and library for a list of items I get back from an API call. Ideally, I'd like the library functions to be members of the handler class. I'm having trouble getting my class method to work however.   • IIS7 + WCF + Silverlight problems

    Hey, I've been building a silverlight application and a WCF service for a while now and recently tried to host them in IIS7. I installed IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and added these two application to my default website. I am having a number of problems so im hoping one of you can help out... 1) The silverlight and WCF service applications do not work with pass-through authentication. I need to "connect as" the administrator server account when setting up the application. I read online that you should only need to use the "connect as" field when you are connecting to another computer. If i dont supply the admin credentials i get this error. Do i have to set up permissions somewhere else? HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.   • Protocol/Packet Design Questions

    I'm looking to a design a protocol for a client-server application and need some links to some resources that may help me. The big part is I'm trying to create my own "packet" format so I can minimize the amount of information being sent. I'm looking for some resources to dissect their protocol, but it seems some completely lack packet design, such as SMTP (which just sends strings terminated by CLRF). What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a system like SMTP over a system that uses a custom made packet? Couldn't SMTP use only a couple bytes to cover all commands through bit flags and save bandwidth/space? Just trying to get my head around all this.

    Hi, I have this code: <input name="rz" class="required validate-string" style="margin-left:17px" id="rz" title="Input rz value" size="23" /> <p class="msg" style="display:none;">Input rz value</p> In the head I have: Event.observe(window, 'load', function() { $$("input").each(function(field){ Event.observe(field, "focus", function(input) { input.adjacent('p.msg').show(); }); Event.observe(field, "blur", function(input) { input.adjacent('p.msg').hide(); }); }); }); The idea is that when the input get the focus, the p element appears and on blur it goes away. The problem is that neither is working, and the error console shows "input.adjacent is not a function" I'm using prototype 1.6.1 and scriptaculous 1.8.3

  • UITextField valueDidChange-Event

    Is there a way to catch a "valueDidChange"-Event for a Textfield? oO I've got a modalView with an UITextField. When the UITextField is empty, the "Done"-Button in the NavigationBar should be disabled and when there is Text entered, it should become enabled. Right now the only way to accomplish this by using the "textFieldShouldReturn"-Method. This works but is simply horrible for usability. Isn't there a way to check the requirements every time a letter is being entered or removed?

  • Calling linux utilities with options from within a Bash script.

    This is my first Bash script so forgive me if this question is trivial. I need to count the number of files within a specified directory $HOME/.junk. I thought this would be simple and assumed the following would work: numfiles= find $HOME/.junk -type f | wc -l echo "There are $numfiles files in the .junk directory." Typing find $HOME/.junk -type f | wc -l at the command line works exactly how I expected it to, simply returning the number of files. Why is this not working when it is entered within my script? Am I missing some special notation when it comes to passing options to the utilities? Thank you very much for your time and help.

  • netbeans editor loses focus on editor and gives it to the menubar

    Hi all, I am newbie of using Netbeans and i have Netbeans 6.5 on XP. So, here is my problem: when i am working on Netbeans and switch to an another task and then come back later, editor of the Netbeans losts the focus and the menubar gains it. I don't want to press ALT key again to re-focus on the editor. I made some search on help contents of the Netbeans and google and i couldn't find any solution. Have any of you got an idea to solve this problem? By the way, i am sorry about my unfluent English. Have a nice day!

    This was originally a question, but is now a code enhancement, since it's a very minor (but useful) update. When heading (or other) text is used as a link with sIFR 3, you now get the two 'open link / open link in new window' options in the right-click flash context menu for the link. When I came across sIFR for the first time yesterday, I was wanting to copy a header (h2) link to the clipboard, on a site that used sIFR 2.x, and was frustrated that I couldn't.   • Zend Routes conflict

    I have defined 2 custom routes. One for threads/:id/:name and the other for threads/tags/:tagName however the second one conflicts with the first because if I enable both then the first breaks and treats :id literally as an action, not obeying the \d+ requirement ( I also tried using pure regex routes, see bottom ). Action "1" does not exist and was not trapped in __call() I tried re-arranging the order of the routes but if I do that then the threads/tags/:tagName doesnt correctly capture the tagName. I also tried disabling default routes but the routes still don't properly work after that.     Let's see how many of us fit the old stereotype, shall we? Do you typically use caffeine when programming? During the day or at night? How frequently do you pull all-nighters? Do you use caffeine when you do stay up late? Do you prefer to have a large amount of caffeine all at once, or small amounts over a longer period of time? Do you use energy drinks, 5-hour energy shots, coffee, tea, or caffeine pills? How about other stimulants such as amphetamines? For instance, I've known a programmer who dabbled in speed because they believed it increased their ability to focus on programming, though happily they're clean now and quite honest about the whole experience.
