How do I learn to develop financial software?

I would like to know what I have to learn to become a financial software developer in the area of brokerage/investment software. I apologize if this question is off topic. I'm not sure where to put it.

What programming language(s) is most commonly used in the financial world?
Financial software requires highly accurate and redundant features. Are these programming skills learned through experience, a class, or a book?
