• Configure Apple Mobile Access Server for iPhones, iPads and Macs

  I successfully configured Mobile Access Server on Mac OS X Server 10.6, but now, how do I configure Macs, iPhones and iPads I'm in charge of ? How can these machines access all the services provided by the Mobile Access Server ? I can't find anything useful on the web concerning the client setup. Is there any '1-click configuration' that would setup iCal, Addresses and Mail at once on a machine like the MobileMe setup does ? Or do I have to manually configure each services on each machines ? I gave a look at the iPhone Configuration Utility but it cannot configure Macs, obviously.

• HTTP response time profiling

  Hello I have a nginx reverse proxy. The server is close to serving 600-700 requests per second. I have a Munin HTTP load time plugin which is outputting this: http://monitor.wingify.com/munin/visualwebsiteoptimizer.com/lb1.visualwebsiteoptimizer.com-http_loadtime.html Now, the problem is I am seeing some spikes in the graph. Expected response times should always be under 200ms. I am keeping an eye on syslog and messages but I am unable to figure out the actual cause of this. I was wondering if there is any good HTTP response time profiling system which I can install / embed with this nginx server and get a detailed reports / logs on the breakup of time taken by different things and what exactly is the cause of the spikes. The profiling system would also help me understand bottlenecks and how can I further optimize the latency. Most important right now is to investigate the cause of the spikes in the HTTP load time graphs (similar pattern is reported by external monitors - Pingdom) and to fix it to get consistent response times Thanks

• Advice on networking career

  Hello! I need some insights on a networking career. I have a valid CCNA and few months of experience as a Jr. network analyst. My focus is a type of job where I can administer networking/storage hardware and possibly managing servers/workstations too. I am new to this job area, specifically new to city like LA. I am currently unemployed and so, my question is: should I continue with my cisco certifications(routing/wireless) or other comptia certs or both to get a reliable job? I am really interested in CCNA wireless but watching craigslist(LA) and other job sites, it seems people need more cisco voice people. While, some others also ask for Net+ certs. I have scarce financial sources so, its better to make some good decisions. I have not been applying yet due to some personal problems but I will soon. Thank you! P.S. • Unclear pricing of Windows Azure

  How do you people think about the Windows Azure pricing model and the way it is presented to the user? I just found out that Azure keeps charging hours for STOPPED instances. I just received a bill from more than 100 euro for 3 STOPPED instances (not) running "HelloAzure". I the past I also played around with Amazon Web Services. Amazon doesn't charge for stopped instances. I was wondering: "Should I have known this before, or is Microsoft doing a bad job in clear communication in the pricing model?" Quote from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/pricing/ : Compute time, measured in service hours: Windows Azure compute hours are charged only for when your application is deployed. When developing and testing your application, developers will want to remove the compute instances that are not being used to minimize compute hour billing. Partial compute hours are billed as full hours. I read this, so I stopped all instances after a few hours playing around. Now it seems I should have deleted them, not just "stopped". Strictly speaking, all depends on the definition of the word "deployed". If you upload an application, but it is not running, can it still be regarded as being "deployed"? May be, but when you read this for the first time, with AWS experience in mind, I don't think it's 100% clear what this means. Technically speaking, an uploaded application only uses (read: should only use / needs only) a few MB harddrive space. It doesn't require any CPU time. If Azure wants to reserve CPU's for not running instances.. well, that's Azure's choice, not mine. I don't want to spread a hate campaign at all, but I do want to know how people think about this subject. Should Microsoft be more clear about their pricing model or do you think it's clear enough? Second question: did anyone got refunded for a similar case? Thanks in advance! UPDATE 27-01-2011 I sent an email to customer support a few days ago, but I guess that didn't reach anu human being because I didn't hear anything from it. So, I made a telephone call today with a Dutch customer support representative (I live in Holland). She totally understood the problem and she's trying to get a refund for me. However, she mentioned that "usually these refund requests are denied", but she's going to try. She also mentioned that I'm not the first one with this (or similar) problem. UPDATE 28-01-2011 I just received a phonecall from Microsoft support. The lady told me some good news: the money will refunded. However, the invoice has not been made yet, and my creditcard will first be chardged, after which it will be refunded, but hey, that's no problem for me! I'm glad the way it's solved! • Dedicated IP for SSL

  I'll be needing a Dedicated IP & SSL for a website. I've noticed that SSL will work for either www or canonical name - but not both. So does mean that Dedicated IP would be set to only one of them ? If I set SSL for www then if a user goes to a URL manually without the www it would show invalid certificate - how do I bypass this ? mod_rewrite in htaccess ? IF I need SSL for a subdomain, thats another SSL Certificate & Dedicated IP to purchase ?

• Beginners security question

  Hi everyone, I'm still pretty new to web development, and have a question about security. Every day I look at the "Latest Visitors" in my CPanel, and today there were some strange entries (one is pasted below). Not knowing any better, it looks to me like there is some site that's referring users to my site, for some reason. • Running a small IPTV station

  I'm looking to run an iptv station for my dorm. I know I can serve multicast so that's not a problem. The station will serve out podcasts and other cc licensed content. The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options?  Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?

• how to update webalizer on certain dates?

  Hi, My webalizer had been running fine until I changed the logrotate different name (dateext). Few days later, I realized that webalizer was not working, so I remove the dateext option. Webalizer is working again but there is no stats for 3-4 days in between. When I run webalizer manually, the records are just ignored because the history file is newer. Any solution for updating the stats for that date/log file without erasing the current stats?

• Insulate hosted client domains from server IP address change?

  I will be hosting web content for many client domains on a single IP address (with a web hosting company, not inhouse machine). Initially, I must give client some information to configure their registrar to point the domain to my server. I want client domains insulated from a potential IP address change, so if I change hosts/IP address they don't have to reconfigure anything with their registrar. Is this reasonably possible without running my own nameserver? If so, what would be the smartest way to make it happen? Instruct clients to make CNAME record? Use some type of DNS management service that clients would use as a nameserver?

• MS Server 2003 Activiation Loop

  Recently we had a motherboard failure on a terminal server so we replaced the faulty motherboard, re-setup the RAID arrays (same motherboard but still wouldn't recognize old RAID setup) and continued to recover the system from a previous backup. No problem up to here, after restoring the system you are prompted to reboot and than login. On login we get a message box stating that Windows needs to be activated do you want to activate now, press yes but than the OS proceeds to log you off and do nothing at all. You can try over and over but to no avail. Found a few articles about a glitch in the activation script and how to reset it, tried that with the same results. Hoping someone can share some knowledge if you have seen this before? Thanks!

• sendmail on Ubuntu won't send from www-data user

  I if call mail() function in PHP from webserver (running as www-data) i get an error sending email. • Can I install two Ubuntu versions on the same machine

  Hello, I have Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit already installed on my machine. I am using MongoDB and it does not work properly with 32 bit machine. So I want to install 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my system on another partition(So that I can have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions). Is it okay to install both 32 bit and 64 bit. • Complete refresh of the OS - windows 7.

  So, the girlfriend's got a virus, and it's pretty nasty. I don't have the time to mess around with it, and she's not so bad with computers, but this is out of her league. (considering her idea of fixing the problem was to download a virus scan that was malware itself) I think I remember hearing that it's possible to put in some restore/recovery disk that comes with the computer to bring Windows back to the way it was originally right from the factory. The problem is, I bought that computer off the shelf - literally - and I don't think I received a disk, or if I had, it's probably gone now. Do you guys have any idea what I could do? I'm all for reformatting, it's just a toy PC for her. I just don't have a disk to re-install windows 7 with.

No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.

• On Windows and Windows 7's Task Manager, why Memory is 1118MB Available but only 62MB Free? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Windows 7 memory usage What are the "Cached", "Available", and "Free" memory in the following picture (From Windows 7's Task Manager). If it is 1118MB Available, then why isn't it Free (to use)? As I understand it, if a bowl of noodle is available, that doesn't mean it is free... it may still cost $7. But what about in the Task Manager, when it is Available, it is also not Free? Does it cost $2 per MB? What about the "Cached"... What exactly is the Cached Memory? We may put some hard disk data in RAM and so we cache the data in RAM, for faster access (that's the operating system's job). So the Total Physical RAM is 6GB, what is the 1106 Cached? Cached in where? Caching physical RAM in ... some where? It is also strange that the Cached value is sometimes higher and sometimes lower than the Available value. Can somebody who is knowledgeable about this shred some light on these meanings?

• Flash Player in Windows 7 X64 problems

  I'm having a lot of problems with flash player in my win 7 X64 laptop, in YouTube the videos are completely black, you can only hear the sound and in Vimeo the videos are played well in normal size but completely black in fullscreen. Also some days ago YouTube played normal size videos but with controls not visible. I'm sure that the problem isn't the browser since this happen in Chrome, Firefox and IE 8. My laptop is a Dell XPS L501X, the flash version is 10,2,152,26 and the OS is Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1. I'll appreciate any help.

• Is there a way to "burn" audio to an ISO? (as an audio CD)

  I have an audiobook that I've downloaded via their download manager, and it's loaded into their cutesy little audio program that they force you to use. I can play the book just fine using their proprietary software, and while it's annoying when using my PC, it's utterly UNBEARABLE when I try to listen to it on my Blackberry. The program is INSANELY slow, it literally takes around 30 seconds to switch between tracks, so if I've forgotten where I am in the book it takes me around 15 minutes to finally get to where I was at. I've looked everywhere on how to transcode the book to .MP3, but evidently with their current format it's either extremely convoluted (and I have no desire to dick around with installing some older version of the codec, getting a different transcoding app, and then wrestling with getting it to actually work). Since I'm able to burn a copy of the book to an audio CD, I figure the best way to go about this is to just make the CDs and then rip them off of those to .MP3. In order to avoid wasting two hours, not to mention 14 CD-R's, I was wondering if there's a way to "burn" to an .ISO instead of an actual CD-R. I currently have SlySoft's Virtual CloneDrive installed, so I can mount .ISO's easily enough, but now I want to actually create an ISO via the CD burning process. Just in case I've not explained myself very well, here is an overview of what I intend to do: "Burn" a set of Audio CD .ISOs from the audiobook (hopefully I can do this using Windows Media Player, otherwise I'll be forced to use the audiobook app) Mount an .ISO in Virtual CloneDrive Rip the audio tracks on the mounted .ISO to .MP3s Repeat steps 2-3 until the entire book is in .MP3 format Copy .MP3s to my Blackberry so that I'm not driven insane every time I want to listen to the book in the car, and be able to use Winamp when listening on my computer EDIT: I'd suppose a rather concise way to put it is that I need something that will emulate a CD-R drive, so that you can select it as the output drive in whatever app your burning the audio CD from. (I'd suppose that when you "insert a blank CD-R" the app would then ask you what file to save to)

• On Windows 7, the last access date is not changed even after reading the file?

  I have some files on Windows 7, and want to see what time it was that I read it this morning (February 27 morning), but when I right click on the file and choose Properties, I see Accessed: Yesterday, Feb 26, 2011, 2:12:37PM so I open the file to read the content again, and then open up the Properties again, and still the Accessed (date) is the same (Feb 26). Even if I add a column to the folder for "Date Accessed", it still shows Feb 26. But today is Feb 27 and clearly I have "accessed" it... so how can I see the true last accessed date?

• Out of memory Problem

  I'm running a C++ program in Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit system architecture). If I calculate the amount of memory that my program uses, it comes up to 800MB. I have a 4GB RAM in place. But still before the program even finishes it throws an out of memory exception. Why is that happening ? Is it because of the structure of the memory or implementation problems or what could possibly trigger this issue ? I've had seen this problem quite a number of times before but never understood the reason behind it. Have any of you handled this case before ?

  Hi, I had a win xp with an NTFS partion for programs (c:) and I installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. I will use ubuntu from now on. On the disk there was a space for the NTFS partition and free space. I created in the free space a new linux partition. So the new linux partition is a ext3. now from ubuntu I used the disk utility and saw that the windows is marked as free space. I had only one possibility, which is to create a partition, so I did as NTFS. I did NOT format it. I don't care about the windows system, I just need to access the program files folder on that partition and get my chrome bookmarks. I forgot to save them before the installation of linux. do you think it is possible? if so how? thanks.

• PSU requirement question for my PC setup.

  I understand that sometimes there may be a situation where the PSU is way more than required but in this case of mine, I'm not too sure. Sometimes when I play games, my computer will crash and restarts itself, 10 mins into the game. Once I received a message that says something like the power is overheating or something like that. Ok, so I have a 500W PSU. I have: 1x Internal DVD writer 1x SATA 250GB HD 1x Nvidia 8500 GT 2GB RAM. As I'm planning to get an additional 250GB SATA HD, I wonder if I need to increase my PSU as well -- in full knowledge of the previous crashes experienced before. Should I upgrade my PSU to 650W perhaps, or is that excessive?

• How to lock Windows7 from installing anything.

  A family member continually needs me to reinstall his PC after it gets viruses and spyware. He claims that he never downloads anything but evidence suggests otherwise. Unless there is some way that watching 'videos' can get spyware on there. AFAIK the computer is kept up to date. Possible solutions? Make a login where its impossible for him to install anything. Windows 7 standard account doesn't appear to be enough. Is a standard account enough here? I tried this once before and he still seemed to get IE toolbars installed up the wazoo Somehow make an automated image where if he 'messes up' or even on log off the computer restores the whole drive image. Similar to what I've seen in Kinko's Something I've not thought of.... And I know you are all going to say 'stop fixing it you are an enabler'... yes I know but I'm not going to have another fight with my wife over helping her family... right now I'm doing this to keep her happy not the idiot with the 'video' addiction ;-) So the name of the game is minimizing my overhead.
