• HTTPS vs. VPN for communication between business partners?

  A business partner has asked to set up a site-to-site VPN just so that a few servers can communicate with each other over HTTPS. I'm convinced this isn't necessary, or even desirable. To be fair it must be part of a wider policy, potentially even a legal requirement. However I'd like to convince them to simply offer an IP to us (and us only) and a port of their choosing for HTTPS. Has anyone had a similar experience, or had to come up with a cast-iron argument against a VPN? Allow me to expand a little - we have a web service that initiates a connection to the partner's corresponding service using an encrypted HTTP connection. The connection uses a client certificate to authenticate. The connection is firewalled so only our IPs can contact the service. So why is a VPN necessary?

• Ubuntu networking issue: two specific machines cannot browse web while connected to network at the same time.

  I have setup a secure wireless network which works very well except for two laptops running Ubuntu 10.10 that can't access the Internet via a browser at the same time. They can both ping sites, wget sites, use skype but when using a browser the page never loads (in Firefox the status bar just sits there saying "Connecting" until it times out.) Here is what we have tried so far (nothing has fixed this issue): OpenDNS Restart networking services Using wired connection rather than wireless Removing all other nodes from the network except the two machines that have this issue Swapped out the router Factory reset the router Reformatted one of the machines and re-installed Ubuntu 10.10 Other things that we have checked: The two machines can connect simultaneously without any issues to other wireless networks in different locations (say in an Internet Cafe or another office) The two machines have unique IP addresses The two machines have unique MAC addresses The two machines can communicate on the network using Skype, wget, ping etc We are not using a proxy on either machine FYI: I have attached output from wireshark. For the test we turned both machines on and pointed them both to the same website. The content loaded on one and not the other. Here is the output from wireshark- (speedyshare.com/files/26228631/machine_output_1 && speedyshare.com/files/26228649/machine2). As you can see the first one worked, the second one didn't. I don't fully understand the output and would appreciate if someone could shed some light on what might be causing this and how we can fix it! Many thanks! Darren

• How to proxy and encrypt all my internet traffic with Win7 and Win2008R2?

  Hi, I have a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows 2008 R2 server. How can I encrypt and route all my internet request from the Win7 laptop to the Win2008R2 server? I guess the server would be called a proxy? Goal is to prevent unencrypted network snooping. I found this article about using SSH, but I would prefer an official windows integrated solution. • windows-2003 server SCSI driver problem

  I have a problem in Adaptec 160m SCSI card connected to DELL Power Edge server, that it is often stops communicating. In windows system error I am able to see an error pointing to the SCSI driver continuously. The error says: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\adpu160m4. • when i try to access website without www. i get access denied.

I have two sites on this server right now, when i try to access one site without the www in the URL i get an access denied. The other site is fine. • Sony Vaio laptop hangs up on boot

  When I power on the laptop it displays the "Vaio" logo and the screen after show, but after that the screen is completely blank but the backlight is lit. Nothing progresses from here. When trying to press f8 to boot into safe mode, nothing happens, black screen again. I created a windows 7 32bit install disk (I had the same OS on it before) to repair or even format my pc. I boot from the disk and it loads all the files and gets to the "Windows is starting" screen but after that it always hangs up on a blank screen with a mouse cursor. Is there any fix to this whatsoever?

• Your experience with haxe and other languages that compile to PHP?

  I would like to hear oppinions from people who have used a language that compiles to php. One such language I know is Haxe. Other ones I've read about are Kira and Pharen. How well do these languages integrate with PHP? Is it relatively easy to write a plugin for a PHP CMS in them? How mature are their implementations and tools?   Hello, I'm having difficulty turning this into a proper question, but here goes... Some of you may have heard about the flooding happening in Queensland, Australia. Well, I'm in the inner suburbs of Brisbane right now; the river has been slowly creeping toward my house since Tuesday. When I left for work this morning it was twenty meters down the road when it is normally kilometers away. Within hours of the distater striking, the government already had some pretty good web applications available for people to get information about what was happening and where the flood was predicted to rise. They also set up a database for people to search for the whereabouts of relatives or could register their location for others to see. Has anyone been involved in the development of these kinds of projects before? It's interesting that they could churn out this software in what appeared to be less than a day when the average development house could take weeks at best. In what ways did it differ from a 'normal' project? Any other thoughts?

• Google Chrome - NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED - pages only partially load

  Hi Google Chrome version (8.0.552.224 (Official Build 68599)) I have developed a web site using asp.net mvc and jquery. it uses a lot of ajax. I noticed that occasionally a web page does not complete loading all files from the server. Browsing through forums It seems that this also happens to other people. Looking in to the Chromium Net-Internals ( type: chrome://net-internals/ as a url in the chrome browser ) I noticed that the pages do not complete loading if a NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event occurred. Any files that were not fetched from the server before the time of the NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event failed to arrive with error (-3) Do you know why the NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event occurs? • MapView tiles loading in Android

  In the Maps application (at least version 5) for Android the tiles are loading in a different way, than when using a MapView in my own application, when for example zooming in or out. In the MapView displays a gray checkered image until the tile is fully loaded an than the map is displayed. In Maps application this it not the case all the time. Tiles that are not fully loaded are still showing a map but it is blurry. The Maps application way of showing the map when zooming is much prettier for the eye. Is it possible to have this "feature" in a MapView in my own application as well? Best regards P

• Android non-full screen app startup during voice call

  Hello, Is it possible to start the application on the Android phone (starting with Froyo), when there is an incoming voice call? In other words, the incoming voice call should trigger the application startup. In such a case the application should not be full-screen, but should cover only part of the screen to not hide the native controls for accepting or rejecting the call. • JsonStore.insert() causes exception in extjs

  I have an EditorGridPanel with toolbar button to add new records. Everything works fine except one scenario. When I try to insert a record which already exists in database, server sends back: {"success":false,"message":"already exists","data":{}} but grid creates a new row marked with red triangle. If after that I try to insert a new record (even if it doesn't exist in database), everything works fine on the server side, but i get an 'uncaught exception' in firebug. It says: 'uncaught exception: Ext.data.DataReader: #realize was called with invalid remote-data. Please see the docs for DataReader#realize and review your DataReader configuration.' why is that?

• Objective C: Function returning correct data for the first time of call and null for other times

  Hi all, Am a beginner in objective C, i am implementing a function that would query a web server and display the returning string in console. I am calling the function (getDatafromServer) repeatedly in a loop. The problem is that the first time am getting the value whereas the other times, it returns me a (null) in console... • ERB doesnt get executed in javascript scripts

  Hi guys I have a select input on my page. this select input displays/hides fields in the form. This all works fine. But the problem is that if i submit the form and lack some necessary fields, it doesnt set the select to the right value afterwards. • No module named objc

  I'm trying to use cocoa-python with Xcode but it always calls up the error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "main.py", line 10, in <module> import objc ImportError: No module named objc This seems to be because dispite all my attempts to install or find objc and the other modules used by that file, they are simply not on my computer that I can tell, so does anyone know where I can download the actual files (or could put up their own copies?) as in objc.py, Foundation.py, AppKit.py and PyObjCTools.py?

• (iphone) maintaining CGContextRef or CGLayerRef is a bad idea?

  Hi, I need to work with many images, and I can't hold them as UIImage in memory because they are too big. I also need to change colors of image and merge them on the fly. Creating UIImage from underlying NSData, change color, and combine them when you can't have many images on memory is fairly slow. (as far as I can get) I thought maybe I can store underlying CGLayerRef(for image that will be combined) and CGContextRef(the resulting combined image). I am new to drawing world, and not sure if CGLayerRef or CGContextRef is smaller in memory than UIImage. I recently heard that w*h image takes up w*h*4 bytes in memory. Does CGLayerRef or CGContextRef also take up that much memory? Thank you

• Why Doesn't This Java Code Skip Lines with #?

  I'm trying to allow an external .txt file that is read by a Java script be able to have some comments in the beginning of the file so others can easily edit it and add more to it. But if the file contains # (the sign designated for a line that is a comment) it just returns the error that there is a "Format Error in file" (the IOException - so it is getting past that first "IF"...) Can someone help? • Invalid ADTS sampling_frequency_index and channel_configuration why?

  Hello all, I hope someone can direct me on the right path before I put a lot of time and effort on this. I'm currently trying to parse an AAC+ frame to get information such as number of channels and sample frequency. So it seems that we can simply get this information from the ADTS header but most of the time this information is inaccurate. So the question is: -Why is this data inaccurate? What is the meaning of the ADTS header channel and sample freq? Should I rely on it? -Should I parse further down the frame to get this information? FYI, the AAC+ raw data is coming from streaming servers... Thanks for the help! -Moto

  Google have just thrown up thousands of errors for duplicate content on my link tracker I am using. I want to make it so Google & any other search engines do not visit my pages on the link tracker. I want these pages to disallow these robots, my pages are: http://www.site.com/page1.html http://www.site.com/page2.html How would I write my robots.txt to make all robots not visit these links when they are in my page?
