    Silverlight has been available since quite some time, and Silverlight 2 allows .Net programming on the front-end. I've been thinking about the apps that I can make using Silverlight, but I can't decide if I should go for development in Silverlight because i am still concerned about accessibility and acceptance. What potential do you see in Silverlight judging from the current trends, and what do you think Silverlight will be used for in the coming years?

  • Pear Mail + Pear mail-mime URLs corrupted

    I'm using pear mail and pear mail mime to send UTF8 HTML emails. When I input urls such as //www.site.com.img they appear in the email as http:///www.site.com.img (note the three slashes). Anyone know how to use //www urls with pear-mail/mime ?   • Combining a one-to-one relationship into one object in Fluent NHibernate

    I have a one-to-one relationship in my database, and I'd like to just combine that into one object in Fluent NHibernate. The specific tables I am talking about are the aspnet_Users and aspnet_Membership tables from the default ASP.NET Membership implementation. I'd like to combine those into one simple User object and only get the fields I want. I would also like to make this read-only, as I want to use the built-in ASP.NET Membership API to modify. I simply want to take advantage of lazy-loading. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • MapReduce programming system in java-actionscript

    Just finished reading ch23 in the excellent 'Beautiful Code' http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596510046 on Distributed Programming with MapReduce. I understand that MapReduce is a programming system designed for large-scale data processing problems, but I have a hard time getting my head around the basic examples given and how I might apply them in real world situations. Can someone give a simple example of MapReduce implemented using either java, javascript or actionscript?

    Hi All, I have deployed my application on server and Now I am getting this error: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off". Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL. ~~~ I have defined custom error pages for my applicatio.   • What's the deal with the hidden Throw when catching a ThreadAbortException?

    I'm going through a book of general c# development, and I've come to the thread abort section. The book says something along the lines that when you call Thread.Abort() on another thread, that thread will throw a ThreadAbortException, and even if you tried to supress it it would automatically rethrow it, unless you did some bs that's generally frowned upon. Here's the simple example offered. using System; using System.Threading; public class EntryPoint { private static void ThreadFunc() { ulong counter = 0; while (true) { try { Console.WriteLine("{0}", counter++); } catch (ThreadAbortException) { // Attempt to swallow the exception and continue. Console.WriteLine("Abort!"); } } } static void Main() { try { Thread newThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(EntryPoint.ThreadFunc)); newThread.Start(); Thread.Sleep(2000); // Abort the thread. newThread.Abort(); // Wait for thread to finish. newThread.Join(); } catch (Exception e) { Console.WriteLine(e.ToString()); } } } The book says: When your thread finishes processing the abort exception, the runtime implicitly rethrows it at the end of your exception handler. It’s the same as if you had rethrown the exception yourself. Therefore, any outer exception handlers or finally blocks will still execute normally. In the example, the call to Join won’t be waiting forever as initially expected. So i wrapped a try catch around the Thread.Abort() call and set a break point, expecting it to hit this, considering the text says "any outer exception handlers or finally blocks will still execute normally". BUT IT DOES NOT. I'm racking my brain to figure out why. Anyone have any thoughts on why this isn't the case? Is the book wrong? Thanks in advance.

    VS2008, 32 Bit Win XP In a class derived from CFrameWnd, I have an object of CDialogBar that needs to have certain controls on it. Among these controls would be 2 sliders, whose event handling is to be done in CFrameWnd derived class. How shall I go about this? class CFrameWndCustom : public CFrameWnd { CDialogBar m_wndDialogBar; // the CDialogBar object. } In CFrameWnd derived class's OnCreateClient, I have created the DialogBar using the above object like: //Create the DialogBar if (!m_wndDialogBar.Create(this, IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL, CBRS_BOTTOM, IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL)) { TRACE("Warning: Couldn't create DialogBar Control!\n"); return FALSE; } Here, IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL is a dialog resource with Style as Child. After this, I drag-dropped a CSliderCtrl on the IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL in Resource View. Now, how/where should I handle the CSliderCtrl's events? There would be 2 such slider controls. I finally need the values of the sliders in CFrameWndCustom class. best regards, Divya

    I am setting up a MailMan list server and I am trying to find a way for moderators to subscribe users through email. We are only using the MailMan website for the administrators and need the moderators to be able to at least subscribe people and/or accept subscription requests from users. Is there anyway to do this and besides turning off require approval? Thanks.

  • Is programming overrated?

    [Subjective and intended to be a community wiki] I am sorry for such an offensive question: But here are my arguments Most of the progress in "computing" has came from non-programming sources. i.e. People invented faster microprocessors and better routers and novel memory devices. I dont think on average people are writting more efficient programs than those written 10 years ago. And the newer and popular languages are infact slower than C. though speed is one of the lesser criterias. Most of the progress came from novel paradigms. Web, Internet, Cloud computing and Social networking are novel paradigms and did not involve progress in programming as such. Heck even facebook was written in PHP and not some extreme language. Though it did face scalability issues (same with twitter) but i believe money and better programmers (who came in much later) took care of that. Thus ideating capability trumped programming capability/ Even things like Map-Reduce, Column oriented database and Probablistic algorithms (E.g. bloom filters) came from hardcore Algorithms research, rather than some programming convention. Thus my final point is why programming skill is so overstressed? To point a recent example about how only 10% of programmers can "write code" (binary search) without debugging. Isnt it a bit hypocritical, considering your real successs lies in coming up with better algorithm or a novel feature rather than getting right first time???

  • Can sphinx be used over cassandra?

    I am planning to build a cassandra store system and also I need a full-text(Chinese) system too. Can sphinx be used on cassandra? (sphinx supports xml format but I am not going to use it, cause it is slow and much of time are spent on xml parsing). Or you can share your experiences if you have ever built a full-text searching system over cassandra. Thank you

  • Java: most efficient way to defensively copy an int[]?

    I have an interface DataSeries with a method int[] getRawData(); For various reasons (primarily because I'm using this with MATLAB, and MATLAB handles int[] well) I need to return an array rather than a List. I don't want my implementing classes to return the int[] array because it is mutable. What is the most efficient way to copy an int[] array (sizes in the 1000-1000000 length range) ? Is it clone()?

  • Caching in Ruby Gem, possibly not using Rails

    I am rewriting an existing Ruby Gem to include caching. This is for a gem that is relatively commonly used, and accesses a large amount of static data on a web service. Currently, I have a small number of gem users doing a large number of accesses to the service that under normal conditions would be swamping / downing the service, and we're going to put the gem up on github for general consumption. Right now, users can choose between using the rails cache mechanism, a simple disk cache, or no cache. What is best practice for letting people choose what cache to use like this (being able to use this outside of rails is a priority so i can't just bail to the underlying caching mechanism)? I'm looking for suggestions/examples for configuration and interface, especially. Thanks for your suggestions

  • Visual Studio 2010 HTML Designer Renders Unlike IE8?

    My question is: since Visual Studio 2010 was only just released, why does it not render pages in the same way as the latest Microsoft web browser, IE8? Is there a bunch of render options I should be setting? I thought Expression Web was supposed to help with its fancy Super Preview but that app doesn't even open VS solutions.   • Fixing an SQL where statement that is ugly and confusing

    I am directly querying the back-end MS SQL Server for a software package. The key field (vehicle number) is defined as alpha though we are entering numeric value in the field. There is only one exception to this, we place an "R" before the number when the vehicle is being retired (which means we sold it or the vehicle is junked). Assuming the users do this right, we should not run into a problem using this method. (Right or wrong isn't the issue here) Fast forward to now. I am trying to query a subset of these vehicle numbers (800 - 899) for some special processing. By doing a range of '800' to '899' we also get 80, 81, etc. If I cast the vehicle number into an INT, I should be able to get the right range. Except that these "R" vehicles are kicking me in the butt now. I have tried where vehicleId not like 'R%' and cast(vehicleId as int) between 800 and 899 however, I get a casting error on one of these "R" vehicles. What does work is where vehicleId not between '800' and '899' and cast(vehicleId as int) between 800 and 899', but I feel there has to be a better way and less confusing way. I have also tried other variations with HAVING and a sub-query all producing a casting error.

  • asp.net regex to find anchor tags and replace their url

    Hi -i'm trying to find all the anchor tags and appending the href value with a variable. for example <a href="/page.aspx">link</a> will become <a href="/page.aspx?id=2"> <A hRef='http://www.google.com'><img src='pic.jpg'></a> will become <A hRef='http://www.google.com?id=2'><img src='pic.jpg'></a> I'm able to match all the anchor tags and href values using regex, then i manually replace the values using string.replace, however i dont think its the efficient way to do this. Is there a solution where i can use something like regex.replace(html,newurlvalue)
