  • Is C# slower than VB.NET?

    Believe it or not, despite the title, this is not a troll. Running some benchmarks this morning, my colleagues and I have discovered some strange things concerning performance, and I am wondering if we're doing something horribly wrong. We started out comparing C# vs. Delphi Prism calculating prime numbers, and found that Prism was about 30% faster. I figured maybe CodeGear did more optimization when generating IL (the exe was about twice as big as C#'s and had all sorts of different IL in it.) So I decided to write a test in VB.NET as well, assuming that Microsoft's compilers would end up writing essentially the same IL for each language. However, the result there was more shocking: C# was more than three times slower than VB running the same operations. The generated IL was different, but not extremely so, and I'm not good enough at reading it to understand the differences. As a fan of C#, this apparent slowness wounds me horribly, and I am left wondering: what in the world is going on here? Is it time to pack it all in and go write web apps in Ruby? ;-) I've included the code for each below--just copy it into a new VB or C# console app, and run. On my machine, VB finds 348513 primes in about 6.36 seconds. C# finds the same number of primes in 21.76 seconds. (I've got an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @2.4Ghz; on another Intel machine in the office the code for both runs much faster but the ratio is about the same; on an AMD machine here the timing is ~10 seconds for VB and ~13 for C#--much less difference, but C# is still always slower.) Both of the console applications were compiled in Release mode, but otherwise no project settings were changed from the defaults generated by Visual Studio 2008. Is it a generally-known fact that C#'s generated IL is worse than VB's? Or is this a strange edge case? Or is my code flawed somehow (most likely)? Any insights are appreciated.   • My fade in goes to all opaque for it goes to transparent

  • I have a question about URI templates in WCF Services

    I have a web service with following operation contract and my service is hosted at http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/ [OperationContract] [WebGet(UriTemplate = "/Files/{Filepath}")] Stream DownloadFile(string Filepath); This web service would let users download file, if the proper filepath is provided (assuming, I somehow find out that proper filepath). Now, I can access this service from a browser by typing, http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/Files/(Filepath} If {filepath} is some simple string, its not a problem, but I want to send the location of the file. Lets us say users want to download file C:\Test.mp3 on the server. But how can I pass C:\Test.mp3 as {Filepath}? I get an error when I type http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/Files/C:\Test.mp3 in the browser. I am new to web services and find that this community is the quickest way to get answers to my questions.

  • When is C++ covariance the best solution?

    This question was asked here a few hours ago and made me realise that I have never actually used covariant return types in my own code. For those not sure what covariance is, it's allowing the return type of (typically) virtual functions to differ provided the types are part of the same inheritance hierarchy. For example: struct A { virtual ~A(); virtual A * f(); ... }; struct B : public A { virtual B * f(); ... }; The different return types of the two f() functions are said to be covariant. Older versions of C++ required the return types to be the same, so B would have to look like: struct B : public A { virtual A * f(); ... }; So, my question: Does anyone have a real-world example where covariant return types of virtual functions are required, or produce a superior solution to simply returning a base pointer or reference?

    so i am trying to save to a join table in a habtm relationship, but i am having problems. from my view, i pass in a group id with: = link_to "Create New User", new_user_url(:group => 1) User model (user.rb) class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :user_groups accepts_nested_attributes_for :user_groups end UserGroups model (user_groups.rb) class UserGroup < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :users end users_controller.rb def new @user = User.new(:user_group_ids => params[:group]) end in the new user view, i have access to the User.user_groups object, however when i submit the form, not only does it not save into my join table (user_groups_users), but the object is no longer there. all the other objects & attributes of my User object are persistent except for the user group. i just started learning rails, so maybe i am missing something conceptually here, but i have been really struggling with this.

The javascript is hard-coded into the HTML and not referenced by <script src=".."> Is it normal that this retrieved JS code isn't recognized upon call-time? If so, what is my alternative if I need the JS to change every time the div is update? Now

  • Is there a "vim runtime log"?

    Sometimes I try a customization/command in my vimrc. Everything seens to be correct, but it just doesn't work. It's difficult to know what's happening when vim starts, and know which command failed or not, so it's really difficult to debug what can be causing a problem in my vimrc. It's a trial-error approach, which is time consuming and really a PITA. For example, I'm having problems with snipmate plugin in some files and just don't have a clue on how to discover the problem. Is there a "runtime log" when vim starts, telling which commands it executed, which ones failed and such? This would help me a lot.

  • C++ - defining static const integer members in class definition

    My understanding is that C++ allows static const members to be defined inside a class so long as it's an integer type. Why, then, does the following code give me a linker error? #include <algorithm> #include <iostream> class test { public: static const int N = 10; }; int main() { std::cout << test::N << "\n"; std::min(9, test::N); } The error I get is: test.cpp:(.text+0x130): undefined reference to `test::N' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Interestingly, if I comment out the call to std::min, the code compiles and links just fine (even though test::N is also referenced on the previous line). Any idea as to what's going on? My compiler is gcc 4.4 on Linux.

  • Selecting all but one field?

    instead of SELECT * FROM mytable, i would like to select all fields EXCEPT one (namely, the 'serialized' field, which stores a serialized object). this is because i think that losing that field will speed up my query by a lot. however, i have so many fields and am quite the lazy guy. is there a way to say... `SELECT ALL_ROWS_EXCEPT(serialized) FROM mytable` ? thanks!

I'm trying to change CSS values inside the textarea replacement (the iFrame where the text gets written) - but I just can't seem to figure out how. Do I have to create a new style sheet to apply to the iFrame? Specifically, I want to change the iframe's :active and font: css settings. Thanks, Walker

  • ls -l freezes terminal locally and remotely

    I've been reading other SF threads regarding ls not returning results or freezing and stalling terminal sessions and it appears they usually the fault of network problems. My problem however, occurs both over remote SSH sessions but also if I am physically at the server itself... I just installed CentOS 5.4 on one of our servers. I'm setting up some rdiff-backup scripts and when I downloaded librsync and untared it, thats when I started seeing some weird behavior with ls -l. wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/librsync/files/librsync/0.9.7/librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz/download /tmp cd /tmp tar -xzf librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz Simple enough. To view the files in this directory I did this: ls results: librsync-0.9.7 librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz Now, if I ls -l, my terminal freezes. I have to re-ssh in to keep going. After reading SF threads, I thought it was network related. So I was extremely surprised to go sit down at the server itself and see the exact same thing happen... So its obviously not a network issues. Even if I ls /tmp/librsync-0.9.7, my terminal freezes just the same... Using strace, I can obviously CTRL+C to keep going. But like I said, normally the terminal completely freezes. Anyone have any clues?

  • Wii game bought in US, will it work on a PAL console in Europe?

    I can't seem to find a European online outlet that offers this Wii game I'm looking for. If I would buy it from a web-shop in the US, could I end up with a game that doesn't work well with my console? I'm worried because all games I have for the Wii so far have a prominent mention of "PAL" on the cover. I didn't notice "NTSC" on the photo's of the cover online, but I'm worried none the less. (And thought I'd ask it here first...) Also, does anyone happen to know if Belgian customs would add tax to shipments like this coming in from the US?

It's not ABSURDLY large -- it's only 5,500 characters. But Google says: Request-URI Too Large The requested URL /search... is too large to process. Is there a way around?

  • Why use shorter VARCHAR(n) fields?

    It is frequently advised to choose database field sizes to be as narrow as possible. I am wondering to what degree this applies to SQL Server 2005 VARCHAR columns: Storing 10-letter English words in a VARCHAR(255) field will not take up more storage than in a VARCHAR(10) field. Are there other reasons to restrict the size of VARCHAR fields to stick as closely as possible to the size of the data? I'm thinking of Performance: Is there an advantage to using a smaller n when selecting, filtering and sorting on the data? Memory, including on the application side (C++)? Style/validation: How important do you consider restricting colunm size to force non-sensical data imports to fail (such as 200-character surnames)? Anything else? Background: I help data integrators with the design of data flows into a database-backed system. They have to use an API that restricts their choice of data types. For character data, only VARCHAR(n) with n <= 255 is available; CHAR, NCHAR, NVARCHAR and TEXT are not. We're trying to lay down some "good practices" rules, and the question has come up if there is a real detriment to using VARCHAR(255) even for data where real maximum sizes will never exceed 30 bytes or so. Typical data volumes for one table are 1-10 Mio records with up to 150 attributes. Query performance (SELECT, with frequently extensive WHERE clauses) and application-side retrieval performance are paramount.

    My company writes mostly .NET code, I work in a professional, 'business casual' environment. Both of these things seemed pretty ubiquitous across the corporate software world, however I recently visited a few companies that use PHP/Ruby and nearly all their devs had facial piercings/visible tattoos, etc. and their offices had no apparent dress code. This might sound funny, but it made me wonder, is there any correlation between specific technology and office culture? For example, have you ever had to wear a suit to a programming job, and if so what technology did you use?
