  • How can I search based on distance with the Google Maps API?

    So here's the issue... I have a field where users can type in their address (which will be GeoCoded via Google Maps API). I have several addresses of widgets in my database (saved as address.. again can easily be geocoded). What I need is for the user to type in their address and for a list of my widgets to come up based on distance from their address. I have THOUSANDS of addresses for my widgets and users have an infinite number of addresses obviously. Any ideas? Thanks.

    i have a log file which maintains source entry for each page.all the pages share the common file. source means from what page did user arrive on the target page. I want to find the most common 3 page path for all the pages on the website. Example log file: source Target 1 2 1 3 2 1 3 2 3 2 2 1 The most common 3 page path here was from 3 to 2 to 1.

  • What is the "Dispatcher" design pattern?

    What is the "dispatcher" pattern and how would I implement it in code? I have a property bag of generic objects and would like to have the retrieval delegated to a generic method. Currently, I have properties looking for a specific key in the bag. For example: private Dictionary<String, Object> Foo { get; set; } private const String WidgetKey = "WIDGETKEY"; public Widget? WidgetItem { get { return Foo.ContainsKey(WidgetKey) ? Foo[WidgetKey] as Widget: null; } set { if (Foo.ContainsKey(WidgetKey)) Foo[WidgetKey] = value; else Foo.Add(WidgetKey, value); } } It was suggested that this could be more generic with the "dispatcher" pattern, but I've been unable to find a good description or example. I'm looking for a more generic way to handle the property bag store/retrieve.

    I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull.   • Generating a list of values a regex COULD match in Python

    I'm trying to use a regex as an input, and from there generate all the possible values that the regex would match. So, for example, if the regex is "three-letter words starting with a, and ending in c," then the code would generate a list with the values [aac, abc, acc, adc, a1c....]. Is there an easy way to do this? I'm using python.

    I couldn't find a duplicate for this question for Java, although there are a lot of them for C#. I have this method: public <T> T getSomething() { // } According to the type of T, I will have a different return. For example: String a = getSomething(); int b = getSomething(); For a, my method will return a specific String. For b, it will return a specific int. And so on. It seems that this can be done with typeof() in C#. How can I achieve it in Java?

  • Assigning values from list to list excluding nulls

    Hi. Sorry for the title but I don't know other way of asking. I got 2 Dictionary < string,string list One of them has a length of 606 items including null values. The other one has a length of 285 items. I determined the length doing this: int count = 0; for (int i = 0; i < temp.Length; i++) { if (temp[i] != null) count++; } Now I want to assign every value in the temp variable to another variable excluding the null values. Any Idea? Remember that I have a different size variables. Edited Dictionary<string, string>[] info; Dictionary<string, string>[] temp = new Dictionary<string, string>[ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count]; .... Here I added some data to the Temp variable .....     Hello, is this a valid JQuery usage pattern to : <script type="text/javascript"> $("body").prepend('<input type="hidden" id="error" value="show">'); </script> That is using Jquery to manipulate / insert HTML Tags when the Document has NOT YET been loaded (by not using document.ready for the inserting into the DOM)? (Normally I only use document.ready, but in this case I need to insert some Information into the DOM that then is present, when document.ready is called. This is some kind of "happens-before" relations ship I want to achieve so that I am shure when document.ready is called the inserted Form field is available in the document, as I depend on that information.   • Setting a parameter as a list for an IN expression

    Whenever I try to set a list as a parameter for use in an IN expression I get an Illegal argument exception. Various posts on the internet seem to indicate that this is possible, but it's certainly not working for me. I'm using Glassfish V2.1 with Toplink.   • Ninject.Web.PageBase still resulting in null reference to injected dependency

    I have an ASP.NET 3.5 WebForms application using Ninject 2.0. However, attempting to use the Ninject.Web extension to provide injection into System.Web.UI.Page, I'm getting a null reference to my injected dependency even though if I switch to using a service locator to provide the reference (using Ninject), there's no issue. My configuration (dumbed down for simplicity): public partial class Default : PageBase // which is Ninject.Web.PageBase { [Inject] public IClubRepository Repository { get; set; } protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { var something = Repository.GetById(1); // results in null reference exception. } } ... //global.asax.cs public class Global : Ninject.Web.NinjectHttpApplication { /// <summary> /// Creates a Ninject kernel that will be used to inject objects. /// </summary> /// <returns> /// The created kernel. /// </returns> protected override IKernel CreateKernel() { IKernel kernel = new StandardKernel(new MyModule()); return kernel; } .. ... public class MyModule : NinjectModule { public override void Load() { Bind<IClubRepository>().To<ClubRepository>(); //... } } Getting the IClubRepository concrete instance via a service locator works fine (uses same "MyModule"). I.e. private readonly IClubRepository _repository = Core.Infrastructure.IoC.TypeResolver.Get<IClubRepository>(); What am I missing? [Update] Finally got back to this, and it works in Classic Pipeline mode, but not Integrated. Is the classic pipeline a requirement?   • What performance indicators can I use to convince management that I need my development PC upgraded?

    At work, my PC is slow. I feel that I can be way more productive if I just wasn't waiting for Visual Studio and everything else to respond. My PC isn't bad (dual-core, 3GB of RAM), but there is a lot of corporate software and whatnot to slow everything down and sometimes lock it up. Now, some developers have begun getting Windows 7 machines with 8 GB of RAM. Of course, I start salivating at this. However, I was told that I "had to justify" why I should get a new machine. I can think of a lot of different things, but I am curious as to what every one else on SO would have to say. NOTE: Ideally, these reasons should be specifically related to .NET development in Visual Studio on a Windows machine. This isn't a "how can I make my machine faster" question.

  • Is it possible to create a null function that will not produce warnings?

    I have a logger in a c++ application that uses defines as follows: #define FINEST(...) Logger::Log(FINEST, _FILE, __LINE, __func, __VA_ARGS_) However what I would like to do is to be able to switch off these logs since they have a serious performance impact on my system. And, it's not sufficient to simply have my Logger not write to the system log. I really need to get rid of the code produced by the logs. In order to do this, I changed the define to: #define FINEST(...) Which works, but this produces a whole bunch of warning in my code since variables are unused now. So what I would like to have is a sort of NULL FUNCTION that would not actually exist, but would not produce warnings for the unused variables. So, said another way, I would like it to compile with no warnings (i.e. the compiler thinks that the variables are used for a function) but the function does not actually exist in the application (i.e. produces no performance hit). Is this possible? Thanks!

  • How to let an average user design a boolean expression graphically

    In our application there's a list of customers, and a list of keywords (among other things). Each customer can have a number of keywords, but it's not mandatory. So for instance, one customer can have the keywords "retail" and "chain", one can have only "contractor" and a third can have none at all. I want to let the user make a selection of customers based on these keywords, but not having to write (retail AND chain) or contractor and not wholesale I would like to make it as user-friendly as possible, and ideally with only "simple" controls, like checkboxes, comboboxes etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to design this? Or maybe some examples of applications where there are similar functionality?

  • Object Design catalog and resources

    I'm looking for web sites, books, or other resources that provide a catalog of object designs used in common scenarios. I'm not looking for generic design patterns, but for samples of actual object designs that were used to solve real problems. For instance, I'm about to build an internal messaging system for a web application, similar to Facebook's messaging system. This system will allow administrators to send messages to all members, to selected groups of members, or to individuals. Members can send messages to other members or groups of members. Fairly common stuff and a feature that I'm sure thousands of web applications require. I know each situation is different and there are a million ways to design this solution. Although this scenario isn't really all that complex, I'm sure the basic design of the necessary objects and relationships for a system like this has already been done many times. It would be nice to review other similar designs before building my own. Is there a place where people can share their designs and others can browse/search through the catalog to review and provide feedback on them? StackOverflow could be used to a degree for this, but doesn't really provide a catalog of designs. Any other resources that would relate?
