  • How can I demonstrate the benefits of abstractions to an old-time C programmer?

    Hi, there's this senior developer in my company that programs in C. I happen to be from functional background (ML, to be specific). This senior C programmer refuses to use abstractions because "abstraction is for lame programmers and _real_ programmers do not need it." I can not seem to convince him otherwise Is it a problem with only this programmer or do all C (and other lower level language) programmers have this opinion that abstraction is for lame programmers?

  • How can I convert SQL comments with -- to # using Perl?

    I have various SQL files with '--' comments and we migrated to the latest version of MySQL and it hates these comments. I want to replace -- with #. I am looking for a recursive, inplace replace one-liner. This is what I have: perl -p -i -e 's/--/# /g'` ``fgrep -- -- * A sample .sql file: use myDB; --did you get an error I get the following error: Unrecognized switch: --did (-h will show valid options). p.s : fgrep skipping 2 dashes was just discussed here if you are interested.   • How to auto-deploy web-app

    Hello, I'm trying to make sense on the best way to do automatize a series of things in a row in order to deploy a web-app and haven't yet came up with a suitable solution. I would like to: use google's compiler.jar to minify my JS use yahoo's yui-compressor.jar to minify my CSS access a file and change a string so that header files like "global.css?v=21" get served the correct version deploy the app (sftp, mercurial or rsync?) omitting certain directories like "/userfiles" Can you guys put me on the right track to solve this?   • Should I upgrade memory for my dedicated server?

    My memory usage hangs around 25% (swap is generally 1%) on my dedicated server and load is around 2-5. My host recommended that I upgrade from 2GB of ram to 4GB so that I can increase my innodb_buffer from the default 16MB to 2GB. My innodb table size is 2GB. My question is, given that ram usage is 25% does it make sense to upgrade ram? Queries are hanging sometimes, so I'm thinking that a bigger innodb_buffer could decrease load on the database, just not sure if I really need to upgrade my ram first.

  • NSManagedObjectID into NSData

    I found this wonderful NSManagedObjectID. This would be very good for referencing an Entity/NSManagedObject/NSEntityDescription, right? Let's get an ID from an entity: NSEntityDescription *entity = [self newEntity]; NSManagedObjectID *objID = [entity objectID]; So... any idea how to get this objID into a string? Or better: NSData. Actually something to be able to save it to the NSUserDefaults. ;-) Btw: NSFetchRequest doesn't want to work in my case. I use an modified version of this example: answer of an old question.

  • iPhone SDK: am I still allowed to develop with SDK 3.1.3 on Leopard?

    Mac OS X Snow Leopard's been in stores for a while now. Sadly, the Mac that I'll be developing on is still running Leopard, and I don't have admin access to the Mac either so I can't do anything about the OS version. Therefore I can only use iPhone SDK 3.1.3, which we've obtained thanks to this answer, to start building apps on that Mac. Am I still allowed to develop apps with this setup and deploy for iPhone OS 3.x to the App Store? Keyword is allowed because all I've seen so far are technical questions/answers, but I'm not certain if Apple's going to be a jerk and shun me because I can't use a Snow Leopard Mac despite having only started this year (and I don't even want to get started about iPhone SDK 4's revised agreement, not with its NDA still in place...).

  • Google local search API - callback never called

    Hello, I am trying to retrieve some local restaurants using the LocalSearch Google API. I am initializing the search objects in the OnLoad function and I am calling the searchControl execute function when the user clicks on a search button. The problem is that my function attached to setSearchCompleteCallback never get called.   • Ruby, Python, or PHP?

    And so we return to the age old question - but with a few twists. This morning, I searched and read up on which web development language to learn first. I'm thinking Ruby, Python, or perhaps PHP. But I have a few questions before deciding. Background: I'm a year into C++ (through school), but want to get into web development. I have all summer to commit to one language, learn it, do some projects, get up some websites, and so on. Now my questions (and these are assuming that I should choose between Ruby, Python, and PHP - if I should choose a different language, let me know.): I hope to use whichever language I learn for websites/web apps. Some of the threads on stackoverflow suggested Python was the best overall language, but others were unanimous that Ruby was best specifically for web development. For a first language suited towards web development, which language do you recommend, and why? This might tie into the first question, but which language looks most promising for future work, future personal projects, and basically the future in general? I'm just a freshman in college. Ideally, the language I choose would be on the rise, community-wise and opportunity-wise. (One reason I'm leaning towards Ruby is that it seems a lot of the newer tech startups/successes are using it.)

  • Display different iphone views depending on logged in status

    I want to display a login view to my users if they are not logged in and the main view if they are. In my header file I define a variable to hold the logged in status #define loggedIn 0 I figure I should then reference this in the initWithNibName method and then decide which nib to load. Is the right way of doing it? If so can someone help me out with the exact code? Thanks for any help

  • Second level cache for entities with where clause

    I am wondering where the hibernate second level cache works as expected if I put a where clause in the hbm.xml class definition: <hibernate-mapping> <class name="com.clazzes.A" table="TABLE_A" mutable="false" where="xyz=5" > <cache usage="read-only"/> <id name="id" /> ... Will hibernate still put the id as key into the cache, or do I have enable the query cache? E.g. when I then execute a HQL query like from A where id=2 that results in an SQL similar to select * from TABLE_A where id=2 and (xyz=5). If I execute this query twice, will it consider the second level cache, or will it nevertheless execute the SQL twice?

  • Can you solve my odd Sharepoint CSS cache / customising problem?

    I have a weird situation with my sharepoint css. It is deployed as part of a .wsp solution and up until now everything has been fine. The farm it deploys too has a couple of webfront ends and a single apps server and SQL box. The symptom is that if I deploy the solution, then use a webbrowser to view the page it has no styles, and if I access the .css directly I see the first 100 or so bytes of the .css. However if I go into sharepoint designer and look at the file it is looks fine, and if I check it out and publish it (customising the file but not actually changing anything in it) then the website works fine and the css downloads completely. There is some fairly complex caching on the servers Disk based and object caches. as far as I can tell I have cleared these (and an issreset should clear them anyway... shouldn't it?) I have used this tool to clear the blobcache from the whole farm http://blobcachefarmflush.codeplex.com/

  • How can I get WWW-Mechanize to login to Wells Fargo's website?

    I am trying to use Perl's WWW::Mechanize to login to my bank and pull transaction information. After logging in through a browser to my bank (Wells Fargo), it briefly displays a temporary web page saying something along the lines of "please wait while we verify your identity". After a few seconds it proceeds to the bank's webpage where I can get my bank data. The only difference is that the URL contains several more "GET" parameters appended to the URL of the temporary page, which only had a sessionID parameter. I was able to successfully get WWW::Mechanize to login from the login page, but it gets stuck on the temporary page. There is a <meta http-equiv="Refresh"... tag in the header, so I tried $mech->follow_meta_redirect but it didn't get me past that temporary page either. Any help to get past this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.   • iPhone SDK Zoom like UITextField

    I have noticed in a number of apps they let you see a zoomed in view of where you are dragging just like the way it is on a UITextField (screenshot attached) but it works over images etc.. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to achieve this? Since a number of apps use it I figured that there might be something built in or an easy way to do it. Any tips are appreciated.

  • Can a Perl subroutine return data but keep processing?

    Is there any way to have a subroutine send data back while still processing? For instance (this example used simply to illustrate) - a subroutine reads a file. While it is reading through the file, if some condition is met, then "return" that line and keep processing. I know there are those that will answer - why would you want to do that? and why don't you just ...?, but I really would like to know if this is possible. Thank you so much in advance.

  • Regular Expression to replace a pattern at runtime(C#3.0)

    I have a requirement. I have some files in a folder among which some file names looks like say **EUDataFiles20100503.txt, MigrateFiles20101006.txt.** Basically these are the files that I need to work upon. Now I have a config file where it is mentioned as the file pattern type as EUDataFilesYYYYMMDD, MigrateFilesYYYYMMDD. Basically the idea is that, the user can configure the file pattern and based on the pattern mentioned, I need to search for those files that are present in the folder. i.e. at runtime the YYYYMMDD will get replaced by the Year Month and Date Values. It does not matter what dates will be there(but not with time stamp ; only dates)). And the EUDataFiles or MigrateFiles names will be there.(they are fixed) i.e. If the folder has a file name as EUDataFile20100504.txt(i.e. Year 2010, Month 05, Day 04) , I should ignore this file as it is not EUDataFiles20100504.txt (kindly note that the name is plural - File(s) and not file for which the system will ignore the file). Similarly, if the Pattern given as EUDataFilesYYYYMMDD and if the file present is of type EUDataFilesYYYYDDMM then also the system should ignore. How can I solve this problem? Is it doable using regular expression(Replacing the pattern at runtime)? If so can anyone be good enough in helping me out? I am using C#3.0 and dotnet framework 3.5. Thanks
