  • dnsmasq acts as the DHCP server for selected nodes overriding the existing DHCP server on the same LAN?

    - by user183394
I am trying to set up a small "lab" at home. Like many modern homes, I have a regular DSL service which comes with a 2Wire 3600HGV router, which acts also as a DHCP server. Since I would like to PXE boot a few computers in my "lab" The 2Wire is inflexible to adjustments that I want to do I have used dnsmasq at work so I would like to use dnsmasq as the DHCP server for the few nodes in my "lab" if feasible. In the dnsmasq man page, there is the following: [...] -K, --dhcp-authoritative (IPv4 only) Should be set when dnsmasq is definitely the only DHCP server on a network. It changes the behaviour from strict RFC compliance so that DHCP requests on unknown leases from unknown hosts are not ignored. This allows new hosts to get a lease without a tedious timeout under all circumstances. It also allows dnsmasq to rebuild its lease database without each client needing to reacquire a lease, if the database is lost. [...] As far as I know, the ISC DHCP server can use the following to do what I would like to accomplish: authoritative; [...] subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { host nb0 { # only give DHCP information to this computer: hardware ethernet e8:9a:8f:17:70:42; fixed-address 192.168.1.10; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option routers 192.168.1.254; option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.254; # Non-essential DHCP options filename "/pxelinux.0"; } [...] But I much prefer dnsmasq's "all-in-one-ness". My question: do I have to couple the -K option with something else? As shown in the example above, the ISC DHCP server requires the mac addresses of managed nodes to be explicitly specified. Does dnsmasq have something similar? FYI, the machine on which I plan to run dnsmasq runs CentOS 6.3 64bit. It has a statically assigned IP address: 192.168.1.3.

  • Transfer all 1&1 web and e-mail services to own Synology NAS using No-IP for DDNS

    - by Neo
I have a domain x-treem.net. The registrar is DomainDiscover and I have a hosting package with 1&1 which includes web and e-mail. I also have an additional package with 1&1 - Microsoft Exchange which centralises all my e-mails, tasks, contacts, notes, etc. and I connect to it with my PC (Outlook) and my Android phone. I have just purchased a Synology NAS (DS213) and I can see I can run a web server (Web Station), e-mail server (Mail Server) on it amongst other things. I am behind a dynamic IP. So, I'm looking to get some clarification on what I must do to consolidate my services and make use of my NAS to do as much as possible and save third-party hosting costs. My registrar specifies nameservers as NS45.1AND1.CO.UK and NS46.1AND1.CO.UK. The MX record is mx00.1and1.co.uk and mx01.1and1.co.uk. I'm aware of the concept of DDNS and I am looking at using No-IP.com for this. This is where I need clarification. If I registered with the No-IP paid service and pointed my registrar to No-IP's nameservers, and used the DDNS support on my NAS (which supports No-IP), then any requests to x-treem.net would go to my NAS. Is that correct? Therefore, web requests would hit the web server on my NAS, and e-mails would hit the mail server on my NAS? So, given all of the above, I can then drop 1&1 completely and use my NAS for everything. I use MySQL, phpMyAdmin, phpBB on 1&1 all of which the Synology NAS appears to support in its available packages. As for Microsoft Exchange, Synology offers Zafara which appears to be a drop-in replacement for Exchange. Am I on the right track here, or is there anything I am missing?

  • Check for updates of a specific Debian package list

    - by Erwan Queffélec
The setup I run a Debian Squeeze host that I use to build a multilanguage project (python, java, php...) and generate custom packages (debian and RPM) automatically (through jenkins) The problem The target distributions of those Debian packages are Etch, Lenny and Squeeze. But our project has some native dependencies that are available only through the DebianRelease + 1 repository (i.e Lenny + 1 == Squeeze, Squeeze + 1 == Wheezy). We for example, need the jetty packages from Squeeze in Lenny, and the cyrus-imapd-2.4 packages from Wheezy in Squeeze. Some additional info : Some package we can simply 'backport by hand' by mirroring the DebianRelease + 1 packages to our own repositories. For instance, the jetty package from Squeeze will run fine on Lenny because it doesn't need an s**tload of additional dependencies However we do need to rebuild some packages. For instance, cyrus-imapd-2.4 from Wheezy has a lot of unsatisfied dependencies on Squeeze. So we need to rebuild it in Squeeze and then upload it to our repo. The question I need to have a simple way of knowing if they are any updates on those extra packages (both "normal" and "security" updates). I could write a simple script that runs weekly, get some parameters from a file, and generate an update report. Let's say the file looks like this: jetty:squeeze cyrus-imapd-2.4:wheezy The script should run as normal user not to mess up the system apt configuration and issue the appropriate commands to generate that report. Does Debian has some built-in apt-* commands/options dedicated to that kind of problem I could use to write this script ? If not, can someone think of another clean solution to achieve what I need ?

  • Bootstrap a debian build environment and build source packages with no root privileges

    - by Erwan Queffélec
On debian squeeze, I am trying to do the following : fetch sources package from the wheezy source repository bootstrap a squeeze chroot for several architectures build the packages for several architectures (i386, amd64 + all and any) I want both the fetching, bootstrapping and build operation to be scriptable, repeatable, and run as a normal user. For the environment setup, I want to make as little use of the root account as possible (install the necessary dependencies, and maybe some visudo stuff). If possible I would like to avoid using a VM (pbuilder with user mode linux) So far I have tried several things with pbuilder (require root), debootstrap (require root) with little success. Here is an example script of what I want to do (does not work): #/bin/bash set -e set -x this=`readlink -f $0` this_dir=`dirname $this` archs='i386 amd64 any all' pushd $this_dir/src # I actually want the following line to work with a repo that # is not in /etc/apt/sources.list but that is another question apt-get source cyrus-imapd-2.4 popd for arch in $archs do build_dir=$this_dir/build/$arch/ pbuilder --create --configfile $build_dir/pbuilderrc --buildresult $build_dir/ pbuilder --build --configfile $build_dir/pbuilderrc --buildresult \ $build_dir/ $this_dir/src/*.dsc # of course I want to use the .dput.cf in /home/myuser/ # and not in /root/ dput $build_dir/$arch/*.changes done

  • AD Custom Attribute with unique value

    - by Zilog
I have custom AD attribute added to my AD schema. Attribute's syntax is Unicode String. It is added to user class and the purpose of it is to store user ID of corporate ERP system. Problem is, that I can have two or more user objects with the same value stored in that attribute, which is something that I would like to avoid. Is there a way to configure AD attribute so it is unique within the domain boundary? (The same behavior as SAMAccountName attribute.) i.e : If there already exists user object in AD with this attribute set to "JSmith" and I try to set that attribute with the same value for another user, Direcory Services will refuse to update that object and give me "already exists" error. Domain functional level is windows 2003.

  • what port should I open for mysql master-master replication?

    - by Vanddel
I have two servers running php5-fpm and a load balancer running nginx, the three servers share /var/www/drupal using nfs. nfs is working correctly. I replicated the two servers' database using mysql master master replication. everything was working fine till I added my iptables rules. In my iptables script, I first drop all chains then I accept the ones I want, other than that there are no other drop statements. I opened port 3306 for mysql replication like this : (the rule is on both servers ) iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s $ip_Of_Other_Server --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d $ip_Of_Other_Server --sport 3306 -j ACCEPT The problem is, when I run both servers and I try to log in using my account on drupal it doesn't log in although I find a successful log in attempt in drupal logs. When I run only one server of them I can log in normally. when I allow everything in my iptables rules it works normally. I believe there's some port I need to open using iptables for the replication to work correctly but I can't find which one to open.

  • Building RPM containing passwords

    - by Kuf
I need to be able to send an RPM to customers that will install the complete server, including Apache and MySQL. The customers will install it on a clean machine. After installation, the server should connect to our main DB, so I though of including the password in the RPM somehow, encrypted if possible. The reason I'm asking this is because I'm pretty sure that it's not wise to save the password in the rpm scripts. I was hoping that someone else had a similar problem and managed to solve that somehow. If anyone knows a way to do that, or have a better idea please share!

  • Redirect URL using Mac OS X Server Lion

    - by pheedsta
I have just set up a Mac Mini with OS X Lion Server to host my own website. I have registered multiple domain names, but I would like the user to be automatically redirected to my main domain name if they type in one of the others (i.e. if the user types in www.myotherdomain.com the URL will be forwarded instantly to www.mymaindomain.com). In the Web settings of Server.app, you can easily add additional domains (which works) but it does not change the URL in the browser to www.mymaindomain.com. It keeps www.myotherdomain.com whilst still displaying the correct pages. Does the redirects or alias options do what I want? I can't seem to work out how to use them (there seems to be no documentation that I can find). In Redirects, you need to enter: 'Redirect Type' (Exact Match or Regular Expression) 'Redirect Path' 'Destination URL' 'Redirect Status' (Original was permanently moved, etc) In Alias, you need to enter: 'Alias Type' (Exact Match or Regular Expression) 'Alias Path' 'Destination Folder' Any help would be great.

  • XenServer 6.0.2 path to installation media contains non-ascii characters

    - by cmaduro
XenServer 6.0.2 install fails no matter what I do. I have confirmed that the md5 checksum on my ISO file is good. I tried installing from a mounted ISO file (remotely via iKVM). I tried installing from physical media. I tried installing from a bootable USB stick (using syslinux + contents of the ISO) All attempts have yielded the same result: When verifying the installation media, at 0% initializing, the following is reported: "Some packages appeared to be damaged." followed by a list of pretty much all the gz2 and rpm packages. If I skip the media verification the installer proceeds and then gives me an error when it reaches "Installing from base pack" at 0% which states "An unrecoverable error has occurred. The error was: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 20710: ordinal not in range(128) Please refer to your user guide, or contact a Technical Support Representative, for further details" there is one option left which is to reboot. Apparently at some point during the processing of the repositories on the installation media non-ascii characters are found, which causes the installer to quit. How do I fix this? And guess what, the .py extention of the file you have to edit in this link community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/1168 means the installer is written in python. The error message appears around line 359. – cmaduro 2 hours ago I am fairly sure that the install error is generated somewhere in repository.py as the backend.py file throws errors while methods in that file are being called. Perhaps all errors can be traced back to this file. – cmaduro 1 hour ago

  • Windows 7 boot manager editor as an option in boot manager

    - by Tomek
Is there any boot manager editor that I can run in DOS (possibly) before the system will load and edit boot manager itself? I would like to delete, edit VHD's and other files, copying them from the network, changing the names and adding to the manager)? Are there any other boot managers that I can use to boot up Windows 7 and 2008 from VHD file? I would like to have flexibility similar to virtualization w/o performance hit and ability to use all 4 processors on the server (using Windows HPC Server).

  • How do I remove a repository of yum

    - by sunil
When I search for a package in yum(centos 6), it tries to search in a repro named 'c6-media' And it gives a bunch of errors as follows file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml Trying other mirror. Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c6-media. Please verify its path and try again Obviously the error seems to say that yum is trying to search for the CD/DVD which installed the OS. I do not have it now. All I want to do now is to delete this repository from yum. I went to the package manager graphical tool and removed this from the sources. Seems yum and the graphical tool do not use the same config. This is just my guess.

  • Can access SSH but can't access cPanel web server

    - by Tom
I've built a Cent OS 6.0 vps and then i've installed the latest cPanel/WHM. This isn't my first installation but i've noticed something weird especially that i've never used the 6.0 version.. when i tried to install cPanel, it didn't recognize wget so installed it, then cPanel said that Perl isn't installed, i've installed that and the installation went well since then. Now, when i've tried to access the server via the browser with the IP Adress as i've used to, it didn't work, it was just loading forever, i tried the 2087 port, still the same. but SSH works. I've also tried the commands to start the server manually but none of them worked. How to fix that? • o2cb thinks ocfs2 cluster is still online, and refuses to shut down

    - by Kendall
I have a handful of OpenSuSE 11.2 servers that utilize OCFS2 volumes. I've noticed that o2cb can't figure out when the OCFS2 cluster is actually mounted. For example, when I try to shutdown o2cb, after stopping OCSF2, o2cb refuses to shutdown because it thinks OCFS2 is still up! • How do I install PHP 5.3 on CentOS?

    - by fivelitresofsoda
I have to install PHP 5.3 on my CentOS server. If I do yum install php, the base repository installs 5.1.6 which is too old for the applications I need to install. So I've been trying to use the IUS repository, following the official instructions from IUS: root@linuxbox ~]# wget http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/x86_64/ius-release-1-2.ius.el5.noarch.rpm root@linuxbox ~]# wget http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/x86_64/epel-release-1-1.ius.el5.noarch.rpm root@linuxbox ~]# rpm -Uvh ius-release*.rpm epel-release*.rpm OK. Now I simply do yum install php53, etc. for all I need... but I get this error: Running rpm_check_debug Running Transaction Test Finished Transaction Test Transaction Check Error: file /usr/bin/php from install of php53u-cli-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-cli-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 file /usr/bin/php-cgi from install of php53u-cli-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-cli-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/php.1.gz from install of php53u-cli-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-cli-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 file /etc/php.ini from install of php53u-common-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-common-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 Error Summary ------------- I have no idea on how to solve this. I think I have to delete the base packages. However, as someone new to Linux, I don't know how to do that.

  • How do you search for backdoors from the previous IT person?

    - by Jason Berg
We all know it happens. A bitter old IT guy leaves a backdoor into the system and network in order to have fun with the new guys and show the company how bad things are without him. I've never personally experienced this. The most I've experienced is somebody who broke and stole stuff right before leaving. I'm sure this happens, though. So, when taking over a network that can't quite be trusted, what steps should be taken to ensure everything is safe and secure?

  • Why not block ICMP?

    - by Agvorth
I think I almost have my iptables setup complete on my CentOS 5.3 system. Here is my script... # Establish a clean slate iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT iptables -F # Flush all rules iptables -X # Delete all chains # Disable routing. Drop packets if they reach the end of the chain. iptables -P FORWARD DROP # Drop all packets with a bad state iptables -A INPUT -m state --state INVALID -j DROP # Accept any packets that have something to do with ones we've sent on outbound iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT # Accept any packets coming or going on localhost (this can be very important) iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT # Accept ICMP iptables -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT # Allow ssh iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT # Allow httpd iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT # Allow SSL iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT # Block all other traffic iptables -A INPUT -j DROP For context, this machine is a Virtual Private Server Web app host. In a previous question, Lee B said that I should "lock down ICMP a bit more." Why not just block it altogether? What would happen if I did that (what bad thing would happen)? If I need to not block ICMP, how could I go about locking it down more?

  • Compiz & Linux compositing: how does it fit into the X architecture?

    - by Latanius
Not a really "how to solve stuff" question, but... I was wondering how the modern X architecture works, with compiz & all. What I know about it: in the beginning, there was the X server, clients connected (presumably on TCP), and then sent messages to the server to instruct it to show windows etc. because this didn't work (at all? or just fast enough?) for OpenGL & 3D acceleration, additional APIs were created for direct rendering (DRI? and, in addition to the X server, what things did the X clients talk to to render stuff and through what interfaces?) and, finally, enter Compiz: X clients end up (somehow) rendering to OpenGL textures, which is then put together to form a fancy-looking screen with translucent windows, and rendered to the screen. What I'm especially interested in is what components does the system have and how do they connect to each other? Like... if there is a box labelled "compiz" in the system... is it inside the X server? If it's not, how do the rendered images from the apps end up in it? And where does it render to? Is that another X server? Or DRI? Of course, I'd be equally happy if pointed to some docs capable of clearing up the confusion described above (conditional on they being significantly shorter than book-sized entities).

  • What's wrong with my custom .desktop xsession?

    - by Noam Gagliardi
I want to create a custom Xmonad session that loads an .xsession script in my home folder. This is the original file I copied. This one works: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=xmonad Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession This is my modified file, xmonad-custom.desktop. When I logout, then login choosing this "xmonad-custom", the screen just flashes and sends me back to the ubuntu login screen (as if it briefly logs in and out of the session): [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Custom Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/{username}/.xsession Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm I also tried without the last line. • Make a server ( other than the router ) to be the default gateway for a subnet

    - by powerguy123
I am trying to make a server ( lets call it server_A) which is different from the router to be the gateway for a subnet. Why do I want this ? I want to host a loadbalancer on server_A using LVS-NAT, and I dont want to implement a V-Lan or IP-IP tunneling. I have modified the routing tables of the remaining servers on the subnet to use server_A as the gateway. I have set server_A to not send ICMP reroute packets. But most traffic from servers in that subnet to outside clients are still being sent through the original gateway, bypassing server_A. Is there any other configuration I need to set in order to achieve my goal ?

  • Firefox : Specifying location of bookmarks

    - by nullstein
When adding a new bookmark with Ctrl+D in Firefox, it used to ask me where to put it in terms of bookmark directory structure. However, recently it's not even bothering to ask me and put the bookmark under the bookmark menu by default. Then I always need to open the bookmark menu and drag & drop to the right sub folder, which is quite tedious. Is there any way to make Firefox ask me where to put the bookmark everytime I add one?

  • Is it possible to make a (Windows 7) executable automatically run when I put in my thumb drive?

    - by iconoclast
I have portable apps on a thumbdrive, and want to automatically run the "menu" app (E:\Applications\Windows\Start.exe) when I insert that drive. I realize (or think I realize, based on a foggy memory of trying to find a way to do this some time ago) that it can no longer be done with the old autorun approach, at least not in Windows 7. But there must be some other way: maybe a daemon process that waits for the thumbdrive to be inserted, and then fires up the .exe file? Maybe a daemon that tries every five minutes or so to launch the menu, and doesn't make a fuss when it's not there. Maybe something else? How can I achieve this?

  • How to move your Windows User Profile to another drive in Windows 8

    - by Mark
I like to have my user folder on a different drive (D:) than my OS is (C:). Reading the following post I decided to give it a try. All went quite well, untill I found out that my Windows 8 Apps won't execute anymore (other than that I didn't noticed any problems). My apps do work, while using an account that isn't moved. In the eventviewer I've found error messages like these: App <Microsoft.MicrosoftSkyDrive> crashed with an unhandled Javascript exception. App details are as follows: Display Name:<SkyDrive>, AppUserModelId: <microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Microsoft.MicrosoftSkyDrive> Package Identity:<microsoft.microsoftskydrive_16.4.4204.712_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe> PID:<4452>. The details of the JavaScript exception are as follows Exception Name:<WinRT error>, Description:<Loading the state store failed. > , HTML Document Path:</modernskydrive/product/skydrive/App.html>, Source File Name:<ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/jx/jx.js>, Source Line Number:<1>, Source Column Number:<27246>, and Stack Trace: ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/jx/jx.js:1:27246 localSettings() ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/jx/jx.js:1:51544 _initSettings() ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/jx/jx.js:1:54710 getApplicationStatus(boolean) ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/jx/jx.js:1:48180 init(object) ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/jx/jx.js:1:45583 Application(number, boolean) ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/modernskydrive/product/skydrive/App.html:216:13 Anonymous function(object) Using ProcMon, I see a lot of access denied messages, like these: Date & Time: 12-9-2012 9:32:20 Event Class: File System Operation: CreateFile Result: ACCESS DENIED Path: D:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe\Settings\settings.dat TID: 2520 Duration: 0.0000149 Desired Access: Read Data/List Directory, Write Data/Add File, Read Control Disposition: OpenIf Options: Sequential Access, Synchronous IO Non-Alert, No Compression Attributes: N ShareMode: None AllocationSize: 0 Any idea how to solve this? I noticed that the app folders e.g.: D:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe had a different owner than the old profile folder had. Old profile folder had john as owner where my new profile folder had the Administrators group as owner. Changing this didn't help unfortunately.

  • Prevent Ultrabay HDD from ejecting on sleep

    - by Bryce Evans
I have a lenovo T430s thinkpad with a small SSD primary drive and 500gb ultrabay drive. When I put the computer to sleep and then return, I get the message titled "problem ejecting < drive name " "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it." This pop up is very annoying every time every time I use the computer. I don't want to disable write caching [D:Hardware[drive]policiesquick removal] because I want best performance and never remove the drive. Any ways to avoid this pop up?
