My question is two-fold: In what ways does it not correspond to modern Perl best practices? How would you clean it up?

  • How can I turn a column name into a result value in SQL Server?

    I have a table which has essentially boolean values in a legacy database. The column names are stored as string values in another table so I need to match the column names of one table to a string value in another table. I know there has to be a way to do this directly with SQL in SQL Server but it is beyond me. My initial thought was to use PIVOT but it is not enabled by default and enabling it would likely be a difficult process with pushing that change to the Production database. I would prefer to use what is enabled by default. I am considering using COALESCE to translate the boolean value to the string that value that I need. This will be a manual process. I think I will also use a table variable to insert the results of the first query into that variable and use those results to do the second query. I still have the problem that the columns are on a single row so I wish I could easily pivot the values to put the column names in the result set as strings. But if I could easily do that I could easily write the query with a sub-select. Any tips are welcome.

I know how to create a list.. and how to create a constructor.. but this is where i get confused.. its probably way simple but i am missing it.   • How to set uri for local image in silverlight app?

    In SL class library MyLib, I have a image say my.png. Then I want to use it in code behind I tried following way: StreamResourceInfo resourceStream = Application.GetResourceStream(new Uri("/MyLib;component/my.png", UriKind.Relative)); BitmapImage image = new BitmapImage(); image.SetSource(resourceStream.Stream); this.MyIcon.Source = image; But it's not woking. I think it's the Uri not set correctly. Help please.

  • Thread Message Loop Hangs in Delphi

    Hello all. I have a simple Delphi program that I'm working on, in which I am attempting to use threading to separate the functionality of the program from its GUI, and to keep the GUI responsive during more lengthy tasks, etc. Basically, I have a 'controller' TThread, and a 'view' TForm. The view knows the controller's handle, which it uses to send the controller messages via PostThreadMessage. I have had no problem in the past using this sort of model for forms which are not the main form, but for some reason, when I attempt to use this model for the main form, the message loop of the thread just quits. Here is my code for the threads message loop: procedure TController.Execute; var Msg : TMsg; begin while not Terminated do begin if (Integer(GetMessage(Msg, hwnd(0), 0, 0)) = -1) then begin Synchronize(Terminate); end; TranslateMessage(Msg); DispatchMessage(Msg); case Msg.message of // ...call different methods based on message end; end; To set up the controller, I do this: Controller := TController.Create(true); // Create suspended Controller.FreeOnTerminate := True; Controller.Resume; For processing the main form's messages, I have tried using both Application.Run and the following loop (immediately after Controller.Resume) while not Application.Terminated do begin Application.ProcessMessages; end; I've run stuck here - any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to store the result of a JSP in a string?

    I want to store the result of a JSP in a string. For example, I want to be able to call a function like: String result = ProcessJsp("/jspfile.jsp"); Also, this must be rather efficient. Making a url request to the jsp and then storing it would definitely be too slow. How could I do this? Here are my thoughts on how to do this, though I'm not sure if it would work, and I'm hoping there is something simpler: Do RequestDispatcher("/jspfile.jsp").include(hreq, hresp), but instead of putting the real HttpResponse object in there, you put your own where the getWriter() method returns something that writes to your String or a memory buffer, etc.

  • What does flushing thread local memory to global memory mean?

    Hi, I am aware that the purpose of volatile variables in Java is that writes to such variables are immediately visible to other threads. I am also aware that one of the effects of a synchronized block is to flush thread-local memory to global memory. I have never fully understood the references to 'thread-local' memory in this context. I understand that data which only exists on the stack is thread-local, but when talking about objects on the heap my understanding becomes hazy. I was hoping that to get comments on the following points: When executing on a machine with multiple processors, does flushing thread-local memory simply refer to the flushing of the CPU cache into RAM? When executing on a uniprocessor machine, does this mean anything at all? If it is possible for the heap to have the same variable at two different memory locations (each accessed by a different thread), under what circumstances would this arise? What implications does this have to garbage collection? How aggressively do VMs do this kind of thing? Overall, I think am trying to understand whether thread-local means memory that is physically accessible by only one CPU or if there is logical thread-local heap partitioning done by the VM? Any links to presentations or documentation would be immensely helpful. I have spent time researching this, and although I have found lots of nice literature, I haven't been able to satisfy my curiosity regarding the different situations & definitions of thread-local memory.     I have three selection drop downs in a form comprising of day, month, year. Pretty standard. Ive omitted all the individual select options for the purposes of this question. <label for="start_date">Start Date<font class="required">*</font>:</label> <select name="place_booking[day_val]"> <select name="place_booking[month_val]"> <select name="place_booking[year_val]"> Underneath this i have a selection for the number of days the client wishes to stay at the letting. <label for="number_of_days">Number of Days<font class="required">*</font>:</label> <select name="place_booking[number_of_days]"> Underneath there is a space to display the departure date based on there two selections above. <label for="departure_date">Departure Date<font class="required">*</font>:</label> ? - this bit i would like to display the calculated date after the above is selected Any help would be grealty appreciated.

  • Detach subdirectory into separate Git repository

    I have a Git repository which contains a number of subdirectories. Now I have found that one of the subdirectories is unrelated to the other and should be detached to a separate repository. How can I do this while keeping the history of the files within the subdirectory? I guess I could make a clone and remove the unwanted parts of each clone, but I suppose this would give me the complete tree when checking out an older revision etc. This might be acceptable, but I would prefer to be able to pretend that the two repositories doesn't have a shared history. Just to make it clear, I have the following structure: XYZ/ .git/ XY1/ ABC/ XY2/ But I would like this instead: XYZ/ .git/ XY1/ XY2/ ABC/ .git/

  • Solaris 10 5/09 can't find SATA disk

    We need to run standard Solaris 10 on a few development servers (Dell 530s) because we can't get a commercial application running on OpenSolaris (we're still trying). However, we are finding that sometimes when Solaris 10 goes to do the install, after setup screens, it can't find the SATA drive. We tried the BIOS setting described here: BigAdmin On some Dells 530s, Solaris GA installs fine, but on others it doesn't. OpenSolaris always installs. Is there some way we can determine (eg. installing OpenSolaris and examining the SATA driver used) what OpenSolaris detected and use some option or driver from it to get Solaris 10 installed on our development Dell servers?

  • Windows Server Backup - Recover only shows the latest backup

    We're having quite some trouble at work using Windows Server Backup. We have a HyperV server (Win 2008) running 8 virtual web servers, these are running a variety of OS'es: Win 2003, Win 2008 and a lone Debian. Each virtual server has a separate partition on the physical HyperV server, so e.g. E: is virtual server #1, F: is #2 and so forth. For backup we use Windows Server Backup, or more exactly we use the commandline tool: wbadmin.exe We need to make the backups without stopping the virtual servers, as we cannot afford the downtime (we've got users online both day and night), and Windows Server Backup offers to use the shadow copy provider to archive this. We run wbadmin like this: wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\remotebackuplocation\somefolder -include:E: -quiet We run it once per partition, because we've got a script wrapped around that command, for sending us an email about how it went. Each time we run wbadmin it'll delete the Backup xxxx folder it created in last backup, and just create a new. In order to prevent this from happening, we rename the backup xxx folder after each backup is run, before starting the next one. I realize we must rename it back to its original name prior to recovering, and we obviously do this. Now the issue is as follows: Even though we have all the backed up files, and rename whichever backup we want to use, to its original name, we can only see the latest backup in the Windows Server Backup GUI when we select "Recover". This means we can only recover the last partition we backup up, so e.g. E: can never be recovered. In other words we're screwed :-( My question is: Does anyone know how to use Windows Server Backup for a scenario like this ? Or is it simply not possible due to the simplicity of Windows Server Backup ? If it's not possible, could you recommend some backup software for this purpose ? We've already looked at MS' System Center Data Protection Manager, however it's quite expensive and the boss doesn't like that :-/

  • Monitoring Bandwidth Usage (Per Internal IP) - Cisco ASA 5505

    I manage a small network with a Cisco ASA 5505 and a shared DSL connection. I would like to be able monitor the bandwidth usage of the various users/devices on my network (by IP). Can I do that using the ASA? Has anyone got this working? What is the best way to do this? Some Ideas I Have Seen Online: SNMP with a tool like Cacti Does this give per IP usage with an ASA or just overall usage? Netflow with a tool like ntop Couldn't get this to work. It seems that the Netflows sent by ASA are not exactly standard. Ntop receives them, but doesn't seem to know what do with them.

  • Best way to replicate / mirror 100s of databases in SQL 2005

    Hi, I currently host around 400-500 SQL 2005 databases of varying sizes (1-10 gig) each. I am aware of most of the different methods available and the general pros/cons of mirroring, log shipping, replication and clustering, but i am not aware of how well they tend to perform when its employed at the size i have specified (400-500 unique databases). Does anyone have any good advice on what is likely the best method for having the ability to fail over to another server with this sort of setup? Fail over does not need to be immediate, i'm just looking for something better than taking backups every day and moving them to storage. I'm preferably looking for something that would also makes it easy to manage the databases in bulk (as opposed to one at a time). Thanks for your input!

  • Has anyone run an objective comparison of Nessus and Skipfish

    We recently set up Nessus, but the annual cost is not cheap. Recently Google published SkipFish which appears to compete in the area of webapps. As best I can tell, Nessus operates via a large database of known exploits. And, as best as I can tell, Skipfish automatically generates vulnerability tests. Has anyone done a comparison of the effectiveness of these two approaches yet?

  • Can't copy and paste into outlook 2003 from any other aplication

    I am having an issue with outlook 2003 where i cannot copy and paste anything from any other application into a email that i am working on. I have tried copying from excel, word, notepad and from a web browser. I can confirm that i can copy and paste parts from the same email. Has anyone come across this issue before and/or know of a solution?
