  • Downloading source via bazaar

    - by beanaroo
Forgive me if this is a stupid question or an inapproptiate place to ask. This is my first time attempting to download source by means of bazaar (launchpad). Regardless of the package or branch... I always get an error like the following: bzr: ERROR: Revision {[email protected]} not present in "Graph(StackedParentsProvider(bzrlib.repository._LazyListJoin(([CachingParentsProvider(None)], []))))". I have looked all over and cannot find an answer. What does this mean? How can I resolve it? Many thanks. ---edit--- Ubuntu 12.10 running BZR-2.6.0Commands include but are not limited to: bzr branch lp:ubuntu/quantal-proposed/ubiquity bzr branch lp:ubuntu/quantal/ubiquity bzr branch lp:ubuntu/quantal/ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu bzr branch lp:nano (just to test) bzr branch lp:ubuntu/quantal/transmission (just to test)

  • How to uninstall AMD Display Driver from other install of Windows

    - by nar
So my Windows 7 had a BSOD from an Ati driver file then restarting only gives me some wierd coloured lines at the top of the screen. Starting in safe mode causes the boot up to freeze at AtiPcie.sys and overlays the same coloured lines on the safe mode start up display. It seems to be a problem with the display driver but I can't get into the OS at all to uninstall it. Luckily I have an old install of Windows 7 from when I moved to a SSD still on my HDD and that runs just fine so I'm pretty sure its a software problem (Maybe the SSD corrupted a driver file or something). So does anyone know how I can uninstall the driver files from another Windows 7 install on the same PC? EDIT: What I mean is, I'm running on the broken PC right now but using a different HDD's windows install. I have full access to the not booting up OS drive with the Windows so I can delete any files/load the registry etc...

  • How to discover true identity of hard disk?

    - by F21
I have 2 fake external hard drives that claim to have a storage capacity of 2TB. I pulled the enclosure apart and the hard drives seems to be refurbished ones with their labels replaced as Barracuda LP 2000 GB labels (the serial numbers on both labels are the same). Interestingly, one of the drives have 160G written on it with pencil. However, the counterfeiters seem to have done something to the firmware, because CrystalDiskInfo reports them as 2TB ST2000DL003 drives. I then delete the 1.81 TB partition in Windows disk management and tried to create a new one and format it. Once I get to this point, the drives would make some noise that is common to dying drives. I am not interested in using these drives for production, but I am interested in finding the true identity (manufacturer/serial number/model number, etc) and restoring it to their factory defaults with the right capacity. Can this be done without any special equipment? This would be an interesting learning exercise. Some pictures of the drives in question: Here are the screens from CrystalDiskInfo: Note the serial numbers are the same (these are 2 different drives!). How is this done? Did they have to tamper with the controller board? I would assume that changing the firmware doesn't change the serial number at all.

  • Laptop seemingly randomly "freezes" to the point of no longer executing applications

    - by Aierou
After upgrading to Windows 8 pro on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z5C-S04US (may be relevant, I'm not sure), my computer began to stop allowing the execution of any service or application, as well as discontinuing the update of the clock until a hard shutdown was performed. This seems to occur randomly after periods of inactivity and I've no idea the cause. These are measures I have already taken in order to attempt to stop this: -Obviously Googling potential answers to this problem -Updating all drivers -Researching all events that have occurred around the time of the failure to respond (with no results) -I tried applying "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick no" which was a hotfix for what seemed to be the same error but was not. Here is some more, potentially related, information about the error: -No BSOD (actually, I haven't at all experienced a BSOD with Windows 8) -Computer seems to have a problem shutting down/restarting most of the time (Hangs at the point where it should completely turn off) -New sound instances are not able to play, but previously loaded containers function properly -As mentioned before, the clock freezes at the time of the error -USB devices function properly -Servers that I was running fail to respond on my end, but stay online. If you require more information, please request it specifically and I will be happy to oblige. Thanks.

  • Tiling window manager where dual heads share common workspace

    - by mikero
I want to use a tiling window manager with my dual monitor setup, but almost all wms seem to treat each monitor as an independent workspace. This means that I can change the workspace of monitor 0 without affecting the workspace of monitor 1. This is not what I want -- I want a workspace to span both monitors, where each monitor is essentially a separate column for tiling (my monitors are oriented vertically, so they are well-suited as tiling columns). When I switch workspaces, say with Mod-[0-9], I want both monitors to change contents. So far the only wm I have found to support this is wmii, but I'd love to try some other options. Have I missed this capability from other tiling wms?

  • Sorting out mSSD acceleration on a Acer M3-581TG

    - by PhonicUK
I recently purchased a Acer Timeline M3 Ultra, it ships with a 500GB HDD and a 20GB mSSD to use as a cache. First thing I did when I got it was format the drives and install a clean OS (on the HDD, the mSSD has nothing on it) - but now I can't figure out how everything needs to be configured in order to use the mSSD as a cache, it just looks like a standard storage drive. I've poked around in the BIOS and there is a SATA mode setting, but it only has one option (AHCI), most of the documentation I've seen on the subject says that the SATA controller needs to be in RAID mode otherwise 'Acceleration' isn't visible in the Intel SRT menu (which for me, it isn't) I've seen a few things that suggest I just need the correct partition layout, I tried this using fdisk from a Linux LiveCD but got nowhere. Any ideas? The laptop shipped with no recovery media so I'm marginally stumped. I don't have any issue with reformatting again if required.

  • SQL SERVER – Caption the Cartoon Contest – Last 2 Days

    - by pinaldave
Developer’s life is very interesting, we often want to start my day early at a job so we can go home early. However, the day never comes as the life of the developer is always about working late hours. If the developer goes to the office early – there are good chances that his co-workers will come late. Additionally, I am confident that there will be always something urgent for developers or DBA to solve right at the time they are ready to go home. This is the life of the developers!  Here is the interesting story of a DBA who was about to go to the home. He had to take his girlfriend to a movie and dinner in 30 minutes. However, his manager asks him to fix the performance related issues with their production server. In normal case, he had only two choices a) Job or b) Girlfriend. Well, our super hero DBA decided to use efficient tools and improve the performance of the production server in merely 30 minutes. When he was done, his manager was absolutely surprised by his efficiency and accuracy of the work. He asked him following question - Here is the contest – you need to guess what was the answer of our Super Hero DBA. If you guess the answer correct you may win Star Wars R2-D2 Inflatable Remote Controlled device. Additionally, if you Download DB Optimizer before Dec 8, 2012 – you will be eligible for USD 25 Amazon Gift Card (there are total 10 such awards). Please do not leave comments in this thread – to participate in the contest – please leave a comment here in the original contest page. • Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

    - by Joe Diemer
Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. The Enterprise Manager Exchange is located at http://www.oracle.com/goto/EMExtensibility. Stay Connected: Twitter |  Facebook |  YouTube |  Linkedin |  Newsletter

  • What type of pattern would be used in this case

    - by Admiral Kunkka
I want to know how to tackle this type of scenario. We are building a person's background, from scratch, and I want to know, conceptually, how to proceed with a secure object pattern in both design and execution... I've been reading on Factory patterns, Model-View-Controller types, Dependency injection, Singleton approaches... and I can't seem to grasp or 'fit' these types of designs decisions into what I'm trying to do.. First and foremost, I started with having a big jack-of-all-trades class, then I read some more, and some tips were to make sure your classes only have a single purpose.. which makes sense and I started breaking down certain things into other classes. Okay, cool. Now I'm looking at dependency injection and kind of didn't really know what's going on. Example/insight of what kind of heirarchy I need to accomplish... class Person needs to access and build from a multitude of different classes. class Culture needs to access a sub-class for culture benefits class Social needs to access class Culture, and other sub-classes class Birth needs to access Social, Culture, and other sub-classes class Childhood/Adolescence/Adulthood need to access everything. Also, depending on different rolls, this class heirarchy needs to create multiple people as well, such as Family, and their backgrounds using some, if not all, of these same classes. Think of it as a people generator, all random, with backgrounds and things that happen to them. Ageing, death of loved ones, military careers, e.t.c. Most of the generation is done randomly, making calls to a mt_rand function to pick from most of the selections inside the classes, guaranteeing the data to be absolutely random. I have most of the bulk-data down, and was looking for some insight from fellow programmers, what do you think?

  • What does an interviewer notice most on my resume?

    - by Need4Sleep
When applying for a position such as a software developer for a company, what does an interviewer notice most on my resume concerning the work i have done? Is he/she concerned with the amount of work i do with others(Open source projects), The specific accomplishments I've made in my field(programs, apps) or the amount of time i spend helping others(forums, mentoring)? For those of you who have applied and work/worked in a position similar to a software developer,In your personal experience, what do you think helped you the most in landing the job? P.s. if 'software developer' is to broad a term, i would specifically enjoy working with teams to create large applications such as dropbox / google / skype etc...

  • Tips on googling for sugar

    - by Mikey
I have a question up on SO I am a little embarassed I can't just google: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13734664/groovy-variables-in-method-names-with-double-question-marks The problem is google seems to chuck any terms that are just punctuation, so queries like these: .findBy?? .and?? groovy '??' Are coming out the same as these: findBy and groovy I have had this problem before when I didn't know the name of the elvis operator, and countless other times (probably happened first time I saw an infix '%' mod too if I had to guess). Is there a resource for syntax sugar lookups? Some way to force google or a different search engine to not ignore my funky punctuation?

  • Why isn't Japanese software industry as strong as their hardware technology?

    - by Joan Venge
I admire Japanese technology and their innovation. They always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else. But why isn't their software industry just as developed? Why aren't there any Japanese operating systems, high-end game engines, 3D digital content creation applications? I would like to see their take on these and I think it could bring alot of innovation. Btw I mentioned 3D software because the animation industry is strong there as well, but they are using North American software for this.

  • What is the best practice for website design and markup now that mobile browsers are common?

    - by Jonathan Drain
Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? Use Javascript or something to adapt the website dynamically to the client? Should all websites be expected to be responsive? Some kind of fluid layout Something else?

  • question about 12.10 32 bit syslinux 4.06 EDD 2012-10-23 usb direct boot

    - by logan
alright so guys i am trying to do a direct boot for Ubuntu 12.10 (as stated in the topic) i have been trying to do a direct boot for about ten minutes now. so i have to do a direct boot because my original OS has a corrupted kernel (i am trying to fix a friends laptop) Toshiba satellite C655D-S5518 anyway getting back to the main point when i put the usb in everything starts up fine it loads the usb then it goes to this screen saying "SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 2012-10-23 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al." also getting a blinking line (as if i could put something in however when i try to type it does not show up so im guessing its telling me it is loading) However i am not getting a corrupted file or any kind of file error so im guessing my main question is, is this normal? and if so how long does it take for this to be done and what are the steps proceeding this? sorry guys if this is a dumb question i am new to the Ubuntu party haha thanks Logan.

  • Can I set command line executed games to open in a window instead of fullscreen?

    - by ajwhitaker822
I really enjoy some of the free Linux games and just downloaded Cave Story, one of my all-time favorites. However, I can only play the game in full screen, 800X600 Resolution. I was wondering if I could run this program in a window instead of full screen. Is there a command or Unity plugin to do this? Also, would the same work to run SuperTux in a window as well? I'm running 12.04 if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help.
