• Disable Ctrl-Alt-Del and shutdown for kiosk

  I finished an app for a client. After talking for a bit he would like me to do an additional app or recommend one for their kiosk. The client would like a way to prevent the computer from shutting down. They like to disable Ctrl+Alt+Delete (also so processes cant be killed), Alt+F4 to close their browser and no windows button to make the start menu pop up for the user to click or use keyboard to shutdown. Obviously there should be a way to unlock it I told them i'll look into it but they really don't need it. They are using Windows 7. Is there a WinAPI call I can use or an already existing app or a lib to do this?

• possible UDP attack on BIND?

• Configuring NVIDIA Quadro with Dell Precision M4600

  After a frustrating couple of weeks when I recently bought my Dell Precision laptop, I managed to fix an issue where Ubuntu (yes, was NOT using Windows, get serious) would not recognize the video card and would cause all sorts of problems all over the place. I ended up one Saturday morning nearly throwing this thing away, when I managed to find a post about NVIDIA Optimus technology... ( http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2358963,00.asp ). Now I am a huge advocate of disruptive new stuff, as long as we keep the broader audience in mind. Anyhow, disabling this (which as the BIOS settings state only work on Windows 7 or later), effectively allow the NVIDIA based Ubuntu driver to kick in full force. No need for a trash can anymore thankfully. As I saw multiple posts all over the place about this, check your BIOS, disable and try the video again to see if this corrects your issues. Best of luck!

• Planning office network [closed]

  I'm planning to setup my office network from scratch and want to ask professional opinions or tips. My office is connected to Internet with Cable connection (100Mb/s). The devices i would like to connect are VoIP Phone (RJ-11), TV (WiFi/LAN), 3 laptops (WiFi), a few smartphones (WiFi), iPad (WiFi), Kindle (WiFi) and, probably, MediaServer (WiFi/LAN). As you can see, the most load will be on WiFi connections (probably, even if TV supports WiFi it's better to connect it by LAN?). So, i need help to choose the best routers combination (or even one?) to support stable connections for all these devices and minimize the total number of routers/adapters. Any thoughts? Thank you!

  How can someone connect to a VM console via SSH, without being an admin on VM-host. This means that you should be able to see the guest boot screen and grub menu in a ssh session. That's important because in some cases you may need to fix the VM without having access to the VM-host admin console. Mainly this is about how you can have your own VM-guest which you can fully control but without having access to VM-host.

• Multithread http downloader with webui [closed]

  I looking for software similar to JDownloader or PyLoad. JD is pretty good but use heavy Java and for now have very weak web interface. PyLoad is awesome, include simple but powerful web-UI but downloading 10 files (10 threads each, so summary it's 100 connections running at around 8MB/s all) consume a lot of cpu - it's whole core for me. Do you know any lightweight alternatives? Aria2c is good for console but I failed to find any good webui, official one is good but after adding more files almost crashes Chrome :)

• dns in a small network with router and AD domain

  I have a small office network with router (running OpenWRT), Windows Domain Controller (used to be 2008R2; I just backed it up and upgraded to 2012), about a dozen AD clients (3 server and windows workstation) and several non-AD clients (network printer, PBX). The problem is that the clients can't access servers by name (only by IP). I tried all kind of permutations. Right now domain controller runs DNS server for all desktops; but unless I put an entry in hosts file - I can only get by IP. I have router as DHCP server (since not all devices are on AD); and except for Domain Controller all IP addresses, including "static", are assigned by the router. Most frustrating, some servers sometimes just work! for example, I can often get to the Linux box by name (it is part of Domain using Beyond Trust Integration Services); but I can never get to SQL Server box. Seems like non-domain devices see more names than domain members... This network should be fairly typical; but I couldn't get any guidance about how to set up DNS/DHCP service to make all nodes happy. The closest is this question, but still it's different! Thanks

• When FTPing into CentOS server, it will drop me into 2 different directores based upon FTP access tool

  I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.7. I created a new user 'ftpuser' with a home directory set to '/var/ftp'. If I FTP to the server using a FTP client it drops me into that home directory(good). If I use IE and use 'ftp://myserver' it drops me into the root of the server(?what?). First: why is this happening, this doesn't seem like correct behavior. Second: How do I prevent this, how do I force 'home' directory no matter what FTP access mechanism? Thanks for any assistance!

• Openfire: Granular alerts

  Our organization has had an Openfire server up and running for about a year now. So far we have used it for messaging in the I.T. Dept and Alerts to all users. We hit a snag this week when one system went down and several notifications were sent out to inform users of progress. Some of the users were Radiologists that do not use the particular system in question and these users found it more of an annoyance than informative. Since that I have been tasked with finding a more granular system for alerts. I am confident that Openfire can handle this and I have just about settled on a way of getting this to work. My idea is to create a half dozen or so users. For example: Staff, Doctor, Assitant and Supervisor. Using spark as our messenger has worked great so far so I would like to stick with that if possible. With that in mind, under advanced login features the resource name can be changed to something unique and non-unique users can log in under the same account, however, when a message is sent to one of these users, the message delivery is inconsistent. Currently I have 4 users under the Assistant user and it seems only 1 of the users receives the messages. Is this scenario even possible? I am avoiding working with the groups in Openfire because the function is atrocious. I could possibly integrate the system into our Active directory but I don’t think that will get us to a workable solution any quicker or more efficiently.

• How to tell httpd to preserve the proxied error message?

  I have an httpd server proxying the requests to 2 different tomcat servers. One of my server handles the authentication and returns a specific http error code 521 when the user already have a running session. My issue is httpd automatically maps this 521 error code to a 500 (internal server error) and then my client can not handle it properly. I have tried to disable ProxyErrorOverride, to remove the /error/HTTP_INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR.html.var but it does not changes anything. • How do I set up multiple Magento sites from the same domain?

  I have a Magento installation with two sites, each with a shop and a view. I have an EU store in one site and a NON-EU store in the other. Both sites use a different currency. At present both of these websites are located on the same domain. I have been able to switch between stores using cookies but this seems to cause an inherit amount of problems. Every time a user creates an account on the non-default shop they get a blank error message. They also get a blank error message when they log in. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I need to use a different currency for each store but they all need to be on the same domain.

• Disable Certain Firefox Plugins System-wide by Default

  I have firefox installed system-wide for all our users. Unfortunately the Adobe Reader Plug-in is rather flakey and doesn't work some of the time. As a result I want to disable the plug-in by default for all our users, but still allow them to enable it if they want via the standard Tools-Add-ons-Plug-ins menu option. How can I have this plug-ins enabled/disabled status be disabled by default? I've been able to configure system-wide configurations before by setting preferences in the mozilla root folder file defaults/pref/all.js, but enabled/disabled plugins doesn't appear to be configured in the preferences. [edit 1]: I found 'How to manage firefox plugins in pluginreg.dat file' which explained some of the formatting of the pluginreg.dat file. • Lync Server 2010 with Hosted VoIP PBX

  We just deployed Lync Server 2010 in our organization and it is working great so far. The next step for us is to enable enterprise voice so that we can replace our telephones with service that is handled 100% by Lync. This is where I am at a loss. I have a fully deployed Standard Edition Lync server and a hosted VoIP PBX provider with VoIP handsets. I would like to get rid of the handsets and have my company's phone service be handled by Lync client (e.g. someone calls my work number, and Lync rings instead of my old handset that is set up with the PBX) I am new to deploying these types of features. • How do I re-configure grub options

  I've searched this topic and I can't find an article with a plausable solution, to my problem. I installed windows 7 first, with 100gb of disk space. I created the necessary partitions via windows. Then I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the remaining 400gb of disk space. During the Ubuntu installation I installed the ubuntu boot loader on /dev/sda3 which Windows (as expected never granted me the option pre-boot for which OS I wanted to boot). So I re-installed Ubuntu on that /dev/sda3 partition, overriding the windows 7 loader. Now when I boot windows 7, it runs GNU Grub, so like an infinite loop. How can I reconfigure grub to say: /dev/sda is the bootloader. /dev/sda2 is Windows. /dev/sda3 is Ubuntu. Re-installing windows and my partitions isn't an option, purchasing software for windows isn't an option (theres a reason I use linux, it's not because it's free, because you don't have to install lots of shit to get stuff working, and over-all it's a robust OS).

• Deleted the GPT partition/ record

  A friend of mine had GPT partition n his Lenovo laptop. While formatting the computer and reinstalling the OS, I wiped of all the partitions, and created 4 new partitions. Now after installing everything, when I turned off the laptop. It isn't booting, I checked the BIOS settings, and tried booting Ubuntu off my life disc, it ran well, but again, I can't boot anymore. Later I figured out, that this is happening because I had deleted the GPT partition, and now the OS has tried to create MBR records, so basically this is the problem.

  I have an windows 7 laptop and I have installed openvpn 2.2x as client. The laptop has 2 ethernet cards, one of them is wireless. The wireless lan is 192.168.1.0/24 The Fix lan is 192.168.2.0/24 If I connect to the openvpn server useing the Fix lan the I can connect properly and for testing I ping to my openvpn server 10.0.0.1 that answers correctly. But if I connect to the openvpn server useing the wireless lan, I can establish the connection but pinging to the server isn´t possible. The packets goes allways lost. Why can this happen? In an other laptop where windows xp is installed and with the same lan configuratio everything works propperly. In both cases the firewall is configured to access the vnc server and the server directories useing samba. With the XP I have no problems. I will thank you for all help Ignacio

• CPU fan twitching phase leds blinking - computer won't boot

  I have a big problem that I got today. Yesterday computer was "on" normally, I went to sleep without shutting it down. When I woke up, I heard a strange sound and was unable to bring it up from hibernate. I unplugged the PSU. When I plugged the PSU back in, the sound came back. When I opened the case, I saw the fan "twitching" like it is about to start and fan LEDs were blinking. Also, motherboard LEDs were blinking in the same pattern - the first green one has more of luminosity then others. When I cut down the power with 0/1 button on PSU, the fans continue to make sounds like the machine is trying to boot before the capacitors run out and the power dies. Does anyone have a clue what to do? I tried disassembling everything but that doesn't work. I will try with friend's PSU later today.

• What do the readonly attributes in diskpart really mean?

  I am wondering exactly what the meaning is of the "Read-only" disk and volume attributes that you can twiddle in diskpart on Windows 7. I am trying to set up an external USB drive as an installation medium for my own software, so I'd like to protect it against casual or inadvertent changes by users who it is given to, so they don't screw up the installation files they might need in the future. From what I can tell by experimentation with diskpart, the volume read-only attribute is actually stored on the physical disk somewhere, because I can set it and it shows up when I take the drive to another machine. This is great because my users can't (easily) change any of the files on the volume, or format it from Windows explorer. However, the disk read-only attribute seems to be just an aspect of how the current machine is accessing the drive. When I set it I can no longer delete the volume in the disk via Disk Management, but when I take the drive to another machine, the attribute is no longer set and in Disk Management I can delete the volume on the disk. I guess I'm not that worried about my users doing that, but I am annoyed that I don't understand what these attributes are really doing. Another thing that I don't understand is that the "volume" read-only attribute actually seems to be global to the disk - if I have two volumes on the disk, and I set the readonly flag on one of them, then it gets set on the other one too. ?!? I have the feeling I'm not searching for the right docs - all I'm finding is diskpart docs that give the syntax for twiddling these attributes, not what they really mean. • Nvidia GTX 660m crashes games

  I just recently bought a Lenovo y580 with both HD intel graphics and an Nvidia GTX 660m. It works great except for one thing: playing games. Every time I load a game, either with Steam or Games for Windows Live, games will end up crashing. I've already talked with lenovo tech support and they couldn't help other than send my new laptop for repair which would take 7 days. So before I do that I thought I'd ask around. These are the games I've tested and what happens when they load: Civilization V: Game loads fine but once it gets loaded to the game, there's noticeable "tearing" popping up and certain things flash. Within a minute of this, the game crashes. Does the same thing regardless if Vsync is on or off. Total War Shogun2: Game gets to the menu screen. The background of the menu screen shows what is expected - slideshow of in-game environments rendered on high settings (this is expected). However, within 2 seconds of the menu loading up it crashes. Age of Empires 3 (Non-steam): This game is several years old so it should work on this brand new laptop fine. However the results are similar to that of Civilization V. Noticeable "Tearing" and after a few seconds it'll freeze/crash. I've done tests on all these games with both the latest stable Nvidia driver 285 as well as the nightly build 307. In addition, Nvidia control panel is set on using the dedicated graphics card for all programs. So is there anything I can do to fix this or will I have to send it back for a week to tech support?

• Laptop kicks other users off the wifi when it connects, then gets disconnected itself

  I've got an Acer Aspire One running Linux. When I connect to my building's wifi, everything seems fine for a short period of time (I can google a few things or start downloading an Apt package), but then other devices on the network lose their IP addresses.
