  Den ersten Geburtstag konnte das neue Channel-Programm von Oracle ja bereits Anfang des Jahres feiern. Die Bilanz seitens Oracle ist positiv, doch was sagen die Partner dazu? Opitz Consulting ist einer der Vertriebspartner, die in Deutschland mit mindestens fünf Spezialisierungen das Platin-Level erreicht haben. Sich innerhalb eines Jahres in den Bereichen BI, Database, Enterprise Linux, Real Application Clusters und SOA zu spezialisieren, war keine Kinderspiel, verrät Michael Page, Prokurist bei Opitz Consulting in Interview mit "ChannelPartner": Etwa 15 Prozent seiner Arbeitszeit hat er 2010 darauf verwendet. Ob der nächste Schritt das Diamant-Level sein soll, ließ Page offen. Sicher ist jedoch, dass für den führenden Projektspezialisten im Java-, SOA- und Oracle Markt weitere Spezialisierungen anstehen, darunter Datenbank-Performance-Tuning, Virtualisierung und Data Warehouse. Auch Oracle selbst legt noch mal nach: Zu den 50 Spezialisierungen im OPN Programm werden bis Ende des Jahres weitere 20 hinzukommen, die das Programm für Branchen wie das Gesundheitswesen, Energieversorger oder Retail attraktiv machen sollen. • Egy konferencia marg&oacute;j&aacute;ra

  Nem akarok provokátornak tunni, de lenne egy-két észrevételem az amúgy jól sikerült Open Source 2011 konferencia kapcsán. Persze a mi rendezvényeinkre is lehet panasz, amit szívesen is veszünk, hogy tanuljunk belole. Szóval nem sikerült az elektronikus regisztráció, pedig még fel is hívtak elotte, meg minden. Ennek ellenére a helyszíni listában mégsem voltam benne. Persze gyorsan megoldották, de azért mégis egy informatikai konferenciáról van szó. Ha már open source, akkor tényleg olyan nehéz lett volna Linuxos gépeket, odahozni OpenOffice (vagy LibreOffice, vagy akármi) telepítéssel. Volt is minden eloadásváltásnál megjegyzés. Azt már nem is említem, hogy persze a néhány kivételtol eltekintve a legtöbben ppt hoztak. Persze egy részük készülhetett OpenOffice-ban is. Mondjuk erre azért fogadnék. Persze volt aki nem ppt-ben hozta és még fel is hívta rá a figyelmet, hogy bezzeg o nem a Microsoft eszközeivel ad elo. Helyette azért egy másik fizetossel sikerült elmondani, hogy milyen jó, hogy nem kerül semmibe az open source. Ami amúgy nagyon jó prezentációs alkalmazás. (Jutalom nélkül, mi lehetett az? Válaszokat ide várom a blogra.) A tartalom, mint mondtam érdekes volt. Persze lenne min vitatkozni, de ezt esetleg majd a konkrét téma kapcsán. Idén nem vettünk részt eloadóként, de szerintem jövore ez már változhat. Az esti program is nagyon jó volt, különösen Soma buvész lenyugözo trükkjei.

• Grid Infrastructure 11.2 sur OEL 5.2 avec VMWare

  En préparation, un sujet sur l'installation et la configuration de Grid Infrastructure 11.2 sur Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 (OEL 5.2 32bits). Plusieurs sites relatent ce type de config test, mais aucun ne semble décrire les problèmes pouvant survenir à l'installation, les résolutions possibles et les pièges à éviter, notamment sur la configuration d'ASMlib ou lors de la configuration du cluster par root.sh. La doc semble manquer cruellement dès qu'on rencontre un problème de configuration de Grid Infra sur VMWare, je vais tacher d'y remédier...A suivre :)

• Geek City: Preparing for the SQL Server Master Exam

  I was amazed at the results when I just did a search of SQLBlog, and realized no one had really blogged here about the changes to the Microsoft Certified Master (MCM) program. Greg Low described the MCM program when he decided to pursue the MCM at the end of 2008, but two years later, at the end of 2010, Microsoft completely changed the requirements. • Skype, add-on applications, UAC and "Unable to respond"

  Just posting this blog tonight hoping it might save someone else a bunch of time. For call recording on Skype, I use a program called Pamela. Lately, when I'd first installed it, it would work fine. Later, however, it would come up and say: "Another application (Pamela.exe) is attempting to access Skype, but we are unable to respond". You just have to love these sorts of messages that don't give you the slightest clue about what the problem is. While I saw the problem with Pamela, it can happen with...(read more)

• Identifying which pattern fits better.

  I'm developing a software to program a device. I have some commands like Reset, Read_Version, Read_memory, Write_memory, Erase_memory. Reset and Read_Version are fixed. They don't need parameters. Read_memory and Erase_memory need the same parameters that are Length and Address. Write_memory needs Lenght, Address and Data. For each command, I have the same steps in sequence, that are something like this sendCommand, waitForResponse, treatResponse. I'm having difficulty to identify which pattern should I use. Factory, Template Method, Strategy or other pattern. Edit I'll try to explain better taking in count the given comments and answers. I've already done this software and now I'm trying to refactoring it. I'm trying to use patterns, even if it is not necessary because I'm taking advantage of this little software to learn about some patterns. Despite I think that one (or more) pattern fits here and it could improve my code. When I want to read version of the software of my device, I don't have to assembly the command with parameters. It is fixed. So I have to send it. After wait for response. If there is a response, treat (or parse) it and returns. To read a portion of the memory (maximum of 256 bytes), I have to assembly the command using the parameters Len and Address. So I have to send it. After wait for response. • Is using SVN for development and CM a bad practice?

  I have a bit of experience with SVN as a pure programmer/developer. Within my company, however, we use SVN as our configuration management tool. I thought using SVN for development at the same time was OK since we could use branches and the trunk for dev, and tags for releases. To me, the tags were the CM part, and the branches/trunk were the dev part. Recently a person, who develops high level code (but outside of the "pure SW" group) mentioned that the existing philosophy (mixing SVN for dev and CM) was wrong... in his opinion. His reasoning is that he thinks the company's CM tool should always link to run-able SW (so branches would break this rule). He also mentioned that a CM tool shouldn't be a backup utility for daily or incremental commits. Finally, he doesn't like the idea of having to jump from revision 143 to 89 in order to get a working copy... and further that CM tools shouldn't allow reversion to a broken state. In general he wants to separate the CM and back-up/dev utilties that SVN offers. Honestly, I am new and the person with this perspective is one of seniority, experience, and success, so I want to field this dilemma with the stackoverflow userbase to see if his approach has merit. My question: Should SVN be purely used for development, and another tool for CM (or vice versa)? Why? If so, what tools would you suggest for this combo? Or do you think that integrating both CM and dev into SVN is the best approach? Why? Thanks.

• What should be a fair amount of time in an interview before rejecting a candidate?

  As a panelist for technical interviews, you often come across candidates who have all the requried educational qualifications, skill sets and experience level on resumes, but struggle to answer even the most basic questions. Ideally, technical interviews should try to check different aspects of a candidate and test them on various skills. So, if the candidate falters on one aspect, one should test the other ones before coming to a conclusion. But often, if a candidates falters on the first few questions, the red flag rises up pretty quickly. What in your opinion should be the bare minimum time spent with a candidate before making a fair accessment of his/her skills and suitability for the job?

• Deferent ways of solving problems in code.

  I now program in C# for a living but before that I programmed in python for 5 years. I have found that I write C# very that most examples I see on the web. Rather then writing things like: foreach (string bar in foo) { //bar has something doen to it here } I write code that looks like this. foo.ForEach( c => c.someActionhere() ) Or var result = foo.Select( c => { //Some code here to transform the item. }).ToList(); I think my using code like above came form my love of map and reduce in python while not exactly the same thing the concepts are close. Now it's time for my question. What concepts do you take and move with you from language to language. That allow you to solve a problem in a way that is not the normal accepted solution in that language?

• Transitioning from Oracle based CMS to MySQL based CMS

  We're looking at a replacement for our CMS which runs on Oracle. The new CMSes that we've looked at can in theory run on Oracle, but most of the vendor's installs run off of MySQL vendor supports install of their CMS on MySQL, and a "theoretical" install on Oracle the vendor's dev shops use MySQL none of them develop/test against Oracle Our DBA team works exclusively with Oracle, and doesn't have the bandwidth to provide additional support for a highly available and performing MySQL setup. They could in theory go to training and get ramped up, but our time line is also short (surprise!). So ... I guess my question(s) are: If you've seen a situation like this, how have you dealt with it? What tipped the balance either way? What type of effort did it take? If you're to do it over, what would you do differently ... ? Thanks! KM

• Can software company claim the intellectual property rights on my paintings?

  This is somewhat related to this question. I'm about to sign a contract with a company that this sort of "all your base are belong to us" clause in it: it says that all programs, designs, sketches, drawings I create in relation to my job belong to the company. More or less usual stuff (unfortunately). What worries me, however, is this "drawings, sketches" thing, because I'm a hobby-artist and I paint and draw at my spare time. Can the company somehow claim ownership of intellectual rights on this work? Should I ask them to explicitly state that this clause does not extend to work of art or is this "in relation to the job" part is good enough?

• Is there a process-oriented IDE ?

  My problem is simple : when I'm programming in an OO paradigm, I'm often having part of a main business process divided in many classes. Which means, if I want to examine the whole functional chain that leads to the output, for debugging or for optimization research, it can be a bit painful. So I was wondering : is there an IDE that let you put a "process tag" on functions coming from different objects, and give you a view of all those functions having the same tag ? edit : To give an example (that I'm making up completely, sorry if it doesn't sound very realistic). Let's say we have the following business process for a HR application : receive a holiday-request by an employee, check the validity of the request, then give an alert to his boss ("one of those lazy programmer wants another day off"); at the same time, let's say the boss will want to have a table of all employee's timetable during the time the employee wants his vacations; then handle the answer of the boss, send a nice little mail to the employee ("No way, lazy bones"). Even if we get rid of everything not purely business-related (mail sending process, db handling to get the useful info, GUI functionalities, and so on), we still have something that doesn't really fit in "one class". I'd like to have an IDE that would give me the opportunity to embrace quickly, at the very least : The function handling the validation of the request by the employee; The function preparing the "timetable" for the boss; The function handling the validation of the request by the boss; I wouldn't put all those functions in the same class (but perhaps that's my mistake ?). This is where my dreamed IDE could be helpful.

  There was a joke going round a few months(?) ago that if the GM industry kept up with the computer industry that we'd all be better off (in relation to driving and costs). There was also a counter joke that if Microsoft made Cars you would, for example, have to squeeze the wing mirror, honk the horn and move the gearstick the reboot the car (CTRL + ALT + DEL) This got me thinking in terms of Apple's recent iPad 2 release, if Apple made cars what would they be like? What sort of technological advancements would software developers and programmers be able to implement if you built a car in a similar fashion to building an iPhone app. Xcode is you Mechanics garage, as it were. What would a car look like if it was designed by Apple Chief of Design: Jonothan Ive?

• What do you do to get your software design robust, flexible and clear?

  I am still getting mature as a software engineering/designer/architect, as you may want to call. At this point in time, I am getting small projects, private projects and so on. What I noticed is that even though I think about the SW structure, design some diagrams, have they really clear in my mind when I start coding, at the end, my software is not flexible and clear as I would like to. I would like to ask you what kind of approaches, mechanisms or even tricks do you use, to get your software (and SW design) flexible, robust and clear (easy to understand and use). So.... Any ideas to give to a beginner?

• Which one scales better asp or php?

  Let's say the website is doing fine(forums,pictures,ajax). And it needs scaling up/scaling out. I feel more comfortable with php but I have worked with asp.net as well. Would you say asp.net is much more powerful, more robust and thus easier to scale out? What would be the pros and cons of converting the website to asp.net in regards to scalability and performance versus keeping the website written in PHP? Examples of personal experience in making such a conversion would be a plus. Thank you.

• Are 'edited by' inline comments the norm in shops which use revision control?

  The senior dev in our shop insists that whenever code is modified, the programmer responsible should add an inline comment stating what he did. These comments usually look like // YYYY-MM-DD <User ID> Added this IF block per bug 1234. We use TFS for revision control, and it seems to me that comments of this sort are much more appropriate as check-in notes rather than inline noise. TFS even allows you to associate a check-in with one or more bugs. Some of our older, often-modified class files look like they have a comment-to-LOC ratio approaching 1:1. To my eyes, these comments make the code harder to read and add zero value. Is this a standard (or at least common) practice in other shops?

• Have you worked with a well designed application?

  Inspired by this question, I started wondering - is there or has there ever been such a thing as a "well designed application"? One where the architecture would be perfect and no refactoring would ever be needed; code would be easy to read and understand even for someone new to the project; changes could be done with a 100% certainty that they won't break anything; etc? I must admit that whatever codebases I've worked with, they've all been more or less a mess. Even code that I start myself only stays organized at the start, and then slowly deteriorates as the time passes. I'm even starting to accept this as part of life and can't figure out whether I should be worried about that or not. So... is there such a thing as a "well designed application"? Or is all our code so shitty that there isn't even a point in trying to make it better, because it will never be good anyway?

• How do I recover a BTRFS filesystem with "parent transid verify failed" errors?

  I've got an external USB disk running btrfs. I use it for backups, and each time I do a backup I take a snapshot. However, it's giving me this error now: parent transid verify failed on 109973766144 wanted 1823 found 1821 parent transid verify failed on 109973766144 wanted 1823 found 1821 Obviously, this is a non-critical disk, but I have a few files on here that aren't available elsewhere. Is there any way to recover data from this disk? Maybe by mounting one of the snapshots as root?

• Confusion about git; how to undo?

  I wanted to install some source code that was on git. Don't really know what that means, I've never used git before, but I figured it was time to learn so, I first installed git. Next I tried to clone the git directory of the software I want to install. I got a message saying "the authenticity of can't be established". I went ahead and ended up with another message saying warning such and such will be added to known hosts. I went ahead and it said something about hanging up on the connection. After searching the internet for a while I realized I didn't need git to install the software but now I have it installed and have added some host to some file or another. I'm concerned I've created some security issues I need to fix. Can anyone help me undo what I've done, or better understand what I've done. Did adding a git project open up my system? Beyond that can anyone tell me how git works. Everything I've found assumes I know stuff that I don't yet. Thanks

• How do I open up firewall while keeping it safe?

  Since I've installed Firestarter I have encountered connectivity issues that are all resolved by disabling the firewall. I'd prefer to have the firewall running and allow all the traffic I normally use: Wired network + wireless network, whichever I'm connected to, or both (1) OpenVPN VirtualBox internal network Samba (for accessing shared Windows folders and sharing folders to Windows) (2) BitTorrent And everything else I use that I can't think of :) All the above works without a firewall. I thought Linux was super secure (I update regularly). Do I really need it? (1) I used the Firestarter wizard and selected wlan0 as my primary connection, now whenever I plug in a network cable, I lose all connectivity. Should I just redo the wizard for eth0, or will I then lose wlan0? (2) If it makes a difference I'm sharing a directory that I share between local users using bindfs. • Banshee doesn't like opening websites

  I have come across two bugs (which will be added to launchpad if it's not resolved here) When I open any of the websites in Banshee Amazon or Miro Guide as soon as the site is finished loading it crashes Banshee. If I play any video local or remote it will show 1 frame maybe 0.5 sec of video then I get a black screen and audio continues in the backgound. Specs & Details I have a Fujitsu Amilo 1718 laptop with 2 gig of ram (original 1 gig) graphics is provided by ATI Radeon Xpress 200M (don't laugh it works with compiz....just) I have a link to the output of banshee --debug Here Don't have time to read? Here are the Highlights [2 Warn 11:52:34.814] Caught an exception - System.ArgumentNullException: Argument cannot be null. then abit later Debug info from gdb: Could not attach to process. If your uid matches the uid of the target process, check the setting of /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope, or try again as the root user. For more details, see /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf ptrace: Operation not permitted. ================================================================= Got a SIGSEGV while executing native code. This usually indicates a fatal error in the mono runtime or one of the native libraries used by your application. ================================================================= Aborted Not music to my ears as you can expect. The version I am using is 1.9.4 from the daily ppa but these bugs happen in any version of banshee from 1.8.1 and up. So if any one has come across a fix for this problem please share!! additional info Both VLC and Miro work on my system so there isn't a system wide problem with video and I haven't mentioned mono so no trolling it will get voted down.

• SMTP server to deliver ALL mail to user@localhost

  I'd like to configure an SMTP MTA to accept all mail addressed to any domain and deliver it to my local user account. It would be very useful for debugging mail sent in some code I'm working on. I'll be running the server locally - no outside world interaction required. • Lock a partition to a few folders

  I want to have a few folders on a partition whose contents I can freely edit, but outside nothing should be saved. Specifically, I want the folders in my Home (Documents, Music, etc) on a different partition, but rest of the normally hidden folders remain in the main partition with Ubuntu. I can make the files within the Home folders save in another partition using fstab binding, but I still can't think of how to lock the partition from edits outside those folders. I'm open to suggestions of alternatives to binding - but please, no symbolic links.
