• No windows preview option(Similar tp Windows 7) in compiz?

  Guys I saw a video on the net regarding compiz to enable windows preview option when i hover a mouse over it. I installed compiz through Ubuntu Software centre and then I searched and found that there is no option called "Windows Preview" in it ! There is a unity option but it doesn't have a windows preview option. Also I would like the freedom to move unity anywhere from top-bottom-left-right. Will this damage my system? Please reply at the earliest :-|

• Is SSD TRIM support still automatic in 12.10?

  Folks I had automatic TRIM working on my laptop running Ubuntu Precise. As in the TRIM guide I added discard to mount options in /etc/fstab, and hdparm --read-sector read 0s immediately after a rm && sync. Using the very same hardware, laptop and SSD, TRIM seems no longer to be automatic after upgrading to Quantal. I recognise the test in the guide I mentioned above may not necessarily work. SSD erase blocks and all that. But Quantal is at least different. After deleting the file and syncing, its data are still on disk and unerased even after waiting several minutes. fstrim will then 0 the dead file's blocks. Once. Repeat the same test five minutes later, and fstrim does nothing. I figure this is probably really a kernel issue, but that box is too black for my spelunking torch. I'm prepared to believe that kernel 3.5 knows what I want better than I do, and all is well despite appearances, but it looks for all the world like TRIM isn't quite all there any more. Anybody have the scoop on TRIM in Quantal/kernel 3.5?

• "Permission denied" error

  Alright so I installed Ubuntu last night and I am very new to everything. Right now I am trying to run a program called JES, (Jython Environment for Students). The instructions tell me to cd to the JES directory I have, so I type cd /home/Programs/JES It takes me to the directory I need to be in, so far so good. Then I have to type in: ./JES.sh And I get this returned to me: bash: ./JES.sh: Permission denied I have very little comprehension of what to do in Terminal or anything of the sort. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried using sudo -l to get permissions but it still persists.

• How do I compile ndiswrapper?

  I have been working for a good 2 days now trying every forum post i could find when it comes to ndiswrapper. I can get it installed but get the error module ndiswrapper not found keeps coming up. In my travels, this is a bug in the installer and I have to build it from source. I have no clue how that works... Is there anyone out there that can give me an idea of where to start? I don't even know where to begin... Thank you in advance!!!

• Make recovery disk for customers

  I hear about other computer shops that sells customers recovery disks that they have created. I'm assuming all that they do is make a image and uses an automation script that allows this to be done. I have seen where clonezilla does this, but it has to be the same HDD size or they might have problems down the road. Is there any other freeware that I could do this with that allows you to use on any size disk. Ghost is really good for this because it automatically fills up empty space with the partition and never needs any user input or "Expert Mode" like clonezilla. But it is not freeware.

• Software Center does not load

  I'm having problems with opening my Software center and it just shuts off after loading a few seconds. I can't even get it to the main page of the Software Center. I did try to follow these commands but of no avail: sudo apt-get purge software-center sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install software-center Instead, I get an error after entering the first command: eim@eim-VAIO:~$ sudo apt-get purge software-cente Reading package lists... Open terminal: sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf sudo apt-get update Now I can open my Software Center! • Ubuntu 12.04 - Swiching Multiple Windows from a Program

  I'm having problem switching multiple windows from a same program. For example, if I have 2 windows opened for firefox at the same time and I wanted to switch from one another, it used to display a 2 small grid preview for each session when I click on the icon. However, that function doesn't seem to be working on my ubuntu 12.04 now. It doesn't response when I click on the firefox (or other application) icon in the sidebar. Does anyone know how to fix this? By the way, I know ALT-TAB can switch windows too, but it's hard to switch if I have 7 pdf documents opened at the same time. So I really wish to have this feature fixed. Thanks in advance.

  I am currently trying to find out how to trim with my new TP and was wondering about the difference of manual/online trimming. • is it normal for ubuntu 11.10 to use 1 GB of memory?

  On my older system i ran the 32 bit version of Ubuntu with 4 GB of ram and noticed it rarely come near 1 gig of usage.I have my new system running with the 64 bit version.The new system is a quad core with 8 GB of ram and Ubuntu is using 1 gig now.Is this normal?I have run top and noticed certain processes such as compiz,xorg and lightdm seeming to be using a lot.I also upgraded in my new system with an msi radeon hd6450 graphics card that s supposed to have 2 gigs on it.

• Assigning shortcuts (accelerators) to Nautilus 3

  I want to assign some shortcuts to menu actions in Nautilus 3.2.1 running under Ubuntu 11.10. I followed the steps shown here How do you create a "new document" keyboard shortcut? but it did not work for me. Switched to gnome classic so I can get the normal menu, hovered over the desired action pressed the desired keys but nothing happened (restarted nautilus, re-logged and nothing). • Making an advertising server ads from different ad networks

  In India there are many ad-networks(other than Adsense) who pay per acquisition or per lead. So Javascript ad code is not required(as fraud clicks don't matter as long as one converts). So an ad network will have many companies and each company will have many banner sizes for ads. Also suddenly any ad may be stopped just because company's target has met. Which is a common nuisance since if we don't remove those url's then that company will get conversions for free. I've a dozen sites and removing the ads are difficult every now and then. Also CPA based ads may not convert at all. That means I'll need to remove non-performing ads regularly. I've gone through: How can I show multiple ad networks on my site? . I've also visited DFP solution but without Adsense they wouldn't let me open account. I want to make an ad server wherein I'll feed new ads (banner image + link for click). I want to maintain categories there like ( shoes, phones, books etc). So if an ad is paused - i'll simply remove/pause the ad there while other ads in the category keep running. Also changing ad code within sites will no more be required. For example - let me have an ad category "clothing" where I can add ads from different companies. So if one of my site requests an ad from there it'll randomly select an ad in this category and return it to site for display. Removing/adding ads within this category will not affect the site requesting those ads. Any idea how to implement it?

• Build My Own Advertising Network

  I have a few ideas that I think would be pretty game changing for online advertising and I would like to build my own network but I don't know where to start. I know it will take a lot of time for major publishers to get on board but I am more curious about the technical side. What language/database model and framework are modern ad networks built on? Basically I want to build an advertising network that registers views per page and allows publishers to manage the look of their own ads and let's the users interact with the ads. Is there any good information on doing something like this or any framework you can suggest to build on? I know this would get complicated pretty fast so if you have suggestions for ad networks that let you customize them heavily I would be glad to hear your suggestions.

• Clarity around Advanced Segment defintion

  I am hoping to get some clarity around an advanced segment I created. For context, our website spans multiple domains. For reasons I wont get into, I created an advanced segment that looks for pages containing my subdomain of interest (subdomain.site.com). I want to ensure that my interpretation of this advanced segment is accurate. Simply, it flags all visits to our entire domain that viewed at least one page on my subdomain of interest? • I think there is a problem with my url encoding

  I took someone's advice and started encoding my image sources, but Google doesn't seem to be able to decode them. I probably did something wrong, because basically Google is taking the full path as the image's name. See this page as an example. If you go on the top most thumbnail and do "Save as", you will see the path is not being decoded. Should I stop decoding or am I doing it wrong? Should I encode only the image name itself? Thanks!

• Monogame - Shader parameters missing

  I am currently working on a simple game that I am building in Windows 8 using MonoGame (develop3d). I am using some shader code from a tutorial (made by Charles Humphrey) and having an issue populating a 'texture' parameter. I'm not well versed writing shaders, so this might be caused by a more obvious problem. I have debugged through MonoGame's Content processor to see how this shader is being parsed, all the non 'texture' parameters are there and look to be loading correctly.   I'm making a tile based game in XNA So currently my lightning looks like this: How can I get it to look like this? Instead of each block having its own tint, it has a smooth overlay. I'm assuming some sort of shader, and to tell it the lighting and blur it some how. But im not an expert with shaders. My current lighting calculates the light, and then passes it to a spritebatch and draws with a color parameter EDIT: No longer uses spritebatch tint, I was testing and now pass parameters to set the light values. • Scaling sprite velocity / co-ordinatesin Android

  I'm trying to find the answer to a question that I've had for a long time, but am having trouble finding it! I hope someone can help :-) I'm trying to find information on how to scale sprite velocity / movement / co-ordinates. What I mean by this is how do I get a sprite to move at the same speed relative to the screen size / DPI so that it takes the same amount of real-time to get from one side of the screen to the other? All of the posts pertaining to sprite scaling that I can find on the various forums relate to the size of the sprite, but this part of it I'm OK with so far, it's just that when I move a sprite, it kind of gets there at different speed depending on the dpi / resolution of the device. I hope I'm making sense. This is the code I have so far, instead of using explicit amounts, like 1, I'm using something like the following: platSpeedFloat= (1 * (dpi/160)); //Use '1' so on an MDPI screen, the sprite will move by 1 physical pixel Then basically what I'm doing is something like this: (all varialble previously declared) platSpeedSave+=platSpeedFloat; //Add the platSpeedFloat value to the current platSpeedSave value platSpeed=(int) platSpeedSave; //Cast to int so it can be checked in the following statement if (platSpeed==platSpeedSave) //Check the casted int value to float value stored previoiusly {floorY=floorY-platSpeed; //If they match then change the Y value platSpeedSave=0;} //Reset Would be grateful if someone could assists - hope I'm making sense. • iframe height is giving wrong value

  I have HTML page which contains line: <iframe id="xyz" width="900" height="250" scrolling="no"..></iframe> From my firefox extension i'm trying to get the iframe height. so i'm registering the browser to a event as follow in my extension: appcontent.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded",myfunction); where appcontent is browser object, myfunction(event): function { var framelist =window.content.document.getElementsByTagName("iframe"); for(var i=0;i<framelist.length;i++) { if(framelist[i].id == "xyz") var frameheight=framelist[i].height; } } when i tried to load this page intially frameheight gives 250 as per in html page but then it gives 0 as height. What would be the cause for this behaviour. is any other script changing the value of iframe height in between ? Help me

  I have inherited a rails forum (Rails 2.3.2 I think) that alerts people of new posts/replies for the forums or threads they are watching. To make it easier for people to answer to threads I would like to enable reply-to-post, similar to basecamp and a bunch of other forums and tools out there. I would add a separator text (like "----add your reply above this line-----") in the original email. I need to: - process incoming email - extract the new text (above the separator line) - ideally strip out text like "on ... [email protected] wrote:" that is automatically added by some mail clients - identify the thread this email is referring to (either using the incoming address or the subject line) - identify the sender - post the content as new reply Any suggestions on how to get started? Any good plugins for this? I've seen many mentioning Mailman and Fetcher, are there any other and which one is the best for this little feature? Thanks!

• Making id'less url in asp.net mvc razor

I want my url to be like this: www.domain.com/p/myproduct But I also want to be able to retrieve the ID of the product, without accessing the database. I thought about having a URL like: www.domain.com/p/myproduct/1 But if I could hide the ID it would be better. So, how do I do it the simplest way? • Passing markup into a Rails Partial
