• New versions of Firefox, Fiddler and SVN

  There are new versions of Fiddler and Tortoise SVN at: http://www.fiddlertool.com/fiddler/version.asp http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads.html  Fiddler is an excellent tool for montoring web service traffic. It also will capture traffic to and from your browser. Firefox needs no introduction from me, just be sure to go in firefox, Help, Check for Updates and make sure you have the latest. Since various browser exploits are about to be publicly discussed, there has been a recent flurry of browser updates, please be sure to get the latest in advance of exploits being made public.

• Applying Service Pack 1 to Team Foundation Server 2010

  Disclosure:  I performed the following activities on my Windows 7 SP1 system, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and a local Basic installation of TFS 2010. As with any deployment of a service pack into a server environment, take your recommended precautions and be aware of the changes you are putting in.  With that said, make sure you backup your databases, and that you have an exit/rollback strategy in the event of an unexpected situation. Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 corresponds to KB2182621.  The KB article is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2182621 The process will be very simple to follow, you will need to execute the mu_team_foundation_server_2010_sp1_x86_x64_651711.exe file.  That will extract files needed and launch the wizard driven Installation. Once this process completes, you need to validate the changes. By looking at Team Foundation Server 2010 Administration Console, you should see the reference to the KB number and SP1. There is also a good reason to validate log locations and records. From the Team Foundation Server 2010 Administration Console. Or from Windows Explorer, go to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Team Foundation\Server Configuration\Logs location and review the logs referenced by the servicing references.

• My DNS works! But, what is the simplest way to add something to it?

  This is my current DNS example.com.db zone file. I followed a tutorial. It works, because when I point to this DNS from another server via resolve.conf, it will actually forward me to the right IP when I do "ping example.com". ; ; BIND data file for example.com ; $TTL 604800 @ IN SOA example.com. info.example.com. • Restrict Administrators from changing system time - Windows XP machines (no domain)

  I need to write a script that will remove all users under Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > User Rights Assignment > Change the system time from the local group policy (gpedit.msc) on all Windows XP machines. These machines are not on the domain. I DO have a way to distribute and run the script automatically. Can someone point me in the right direction for creating a script like this?

• Cronjob not Running

  I have a bash script that looks like this: #!/bin/sh PID=`ps faux | grep libt | awk 'NR==2{print $2}'` STATUS=`ps faux | grep libt | awk 'NR==2{print $1}'` if [ "$STATUS" = "ec2-user" ]; then echo "libt already killed" else sudo kill $PID echo "libt was killed" fi sleep 5 cd /home/ec2-user/libt sudo ./libt I have saved this file as restart.sh and when I run it like ./restart.sh, it does what its supposed to (kills the libt process and restarts it). However, now I am trying to automate the process by using cron. So I made a cron job that I want to run every 6 hours that looks like this 0 */6 * * * /home/ec2-user/restart.sh When I run "crontab -l" I can see this print so I know it's been added properly. I should mention that the service does not have the ability to be restarted, (like "service ... restart") the process ID needs to be found, killed and then the start script needs to be ran. I have found that this cronjob is not working, I'll log onto the box and I can tell by looking at the logs that no restart has occurred. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to troubleshoot? Any advice would help, this is my first cron job :) Thanks!

• Cisco ASA: Allowing and Denying VPN Access based on membership to an AD group

  I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connecting to an Active Directory server for VPN authentication. Usually we'd restrict this to a particular OU, but in this case users which need access are spread across multiple OUs. So, I'd like to use a group to specify which users have remote access. I've created the group and added the users, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to deny users which aren't in that group. Right now, if someone connects they get assigned the correct group policy "companynamera" if they are in that group, so the LDAP mapping is working. However, users who are not in that group still authenticate fine, and their group policy becomes the LDAP path of their first group, i.e. CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com, and then are still allowed access. How do I add a filter so that I can map everything that isn't "companynamera" to no access? • Is it effective installing firewall within same machine which offering service?

  I'm a starting a small service practically. And I have single server currently. No money to purchase separated/dedicated firewall equipment now. Is it effective installing firewall software on same machine which offering internet service? My server will offer HTTP, NFS, and SSH, and custom made server software on a several ports. (edit) All services (except NFS) should be open to internet. Not internal services. I guess my machine (virtualized within Xen) is connected to the internet directly because I can connect to my machine SSH with only IP address. (edit) NFS is not open to internet. Sorry for my mistake. NFS will be served via SSH only.

• What's the difference between a normal ActiveX killbit update and one for IDX?

  I'm looking back at some old MS security bulletin for distribution to new clients and when I look at downloads for the last set of MS ActiveX killbits, KB article here, under each platform I see links with the term IDX. For instance there will be an entry that says "For Windows 7 for 32-bit versions" and then one a few rows down that says "For Windows 7 IDX for 32-bit versions". What's the difference between the two? I understand from a little digging that idx is one of the field names for the database that ActiveX controls are stored in, but that's not really helpful.

  I just know there is two kind of firewalls. Stateless and stateful. It's hard to determine what kind of firewall I have to use. Currently I have to run firewall within same machine runs services, Basically I want stateless because of its less resource consumption. However if it is not sufficient for security, it's meaningless. I'll run HTTP, SSH, NFS (only over SSH), and some custom made server on several TCP/UDP ports. Should I use stateful firewall? (edit) Maybe the question can be assumed as 'Should I use stateful rules?'.

  Ok, so assume that I have an ingress access list that looks like this: access-list outside_in extended ip permit any X.Y.Z.1 eq 25 access-group outside_in in interface outside And I want to do egress filtering. I want to allow inside machines to respond on port 80, and I want to allow ports over 1024. Given that the firewall is statefull, do I need to have the rule access-list inside_in extended ip permit X.Y.Z.1 any eq 25 in my inside_in ACL, or can I get away with just access-list inside_in extended ip permit any any gt 1024 access-group inside_in in interface inside In other words, if I apply an egress access list, do I have to explicitly allow machines to respond to requests allowed by the ingress access list, or does the statefullness of the firewall handle that for me?   Here is a situation I installed Ubuntu on a laptop using Wubi in Windows 7 drive.*The laptop is not mine.*I have installed and things worked by now perfectly without any problem.We are trying to set up a Xen (virtualization)environment in this laptop. After setting up every thing cleanly.When I needed to boot with following grub entries menuentry "Xen Linux 2.6.32.27" { insmod ntfs set root='(hd0,2)' loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk set root=(loop0) multiboot /boot/xen.gz module /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.27 dummy=dummy root=/dev/sda2 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro console=tty0 module /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.27 } I got error file not found error unknown command 'multiboot' error unknown command 'module' error unknown command 'module' Now to dig this issue further I reboot the machine and go to grub command prompt and manually pass on each of the above parameters which you see in the grub entry when I reached grub> insmod multiboot then I got following message on screen error:file not found. It looks like this wubi+ grub setup has just enough modules to use loopback file on ntfs, but the ACTUAL /boot directory is on the loopback NOT ntfs (hd0,2). Therefore any attempt to read any files from (hd0,2) simply wont work, cause there's no file there.I need to use insmod multiboot and command multiboot and module which are available in grub on a normal install without Wubi.But since the laptop is not mine so I am not allowed to partition it and have to make it work in this situation only. While a normal Kernel is still booting? How can I get module multiboot in this Wubi based install.

• slow DNS resolution

  I have a DNS server that resolves all queries for an internal group of servers. It is a bind on CentOS 5.5 (same as RHEL5) and I have set it up to allow recursion and resolve direction without any forwarders. The problem I am facing is that it takes a freakishly long amount of time to resolve a name for the first time. (in the magnitudes of 20 sec) This causes clients to give timeout. When I set it to forward all to Google's public DNS, i.e. 8.8.8.8+8.8.4.4, it works very nicely (within a second). (this goes on for a few more seconds) If you look carefully, you will see that the first 3-4 root servers did not respond at all. This wastes 7-8 seconds, until one of them responded. Do you think I have setup something wrong here? Interestingly, when I dig directly from the root servers that did not respond, the always respond very fast (showing the firewall/nat is not the issue here). E.g. dig www.paypal.com @192.35.51.30 works perfectly, consistently, and very fast. What do you think about this mystery?

  hi, I have two systems with ip address say 64.103.56.1(A)(Dev name -wlan0) and 64.103.225.18(B),now what i want is , everytime I ping B from my system A, it has to be routed via a router say with address 10.0.0.251(C)(I want this to be my next hop to reach B) , but this router is on a different subnetwork than the two systems.How do I do this? /* Things I tried: I used 'route add -host B gw C wlan0', and got an error saying " no such process exist or no such device found". Tried ping C and traceroute and found the gw addr at my side is some 63.103.236.3(D), so added another entry route add -host C gw D wlan0, I was able to do this without any error! */

  Hi, I've been looking and trying around all night, but without success. I configured nginx to serve my static files and proxy all the other traffic: server { listen 80; server_name mydomain.com; access_log /home/boudewijn/www/bbt/brouwers/logs/access.log; error_log /home/boudewijn/www/bbt/brouwers/logs/error.log; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; include /etc/nginx/proxy.conf; } location /media/ { root /home/boudewijn/www/bbt/brouwers/; } } The proxy passing is no problem, but when I go to mydomain.com/media/ or try to access any testfile over there, it's without success. I paid attention to the difference between root and alias, my media folder exists, I paid attention to the trailing slashes, but still I get a 404 when trying to access my static media files. Any help?

Static HTML and PHP continues to works fine as well. I would like to save power by automatically turning off the thin clients at night, but I would like to have the ability to resume the staff's session in the morning. Is it possible to keep a session running whilst turning off the LTSP thin client and resuming that session when you power up the thin client the next time? Could this work if you login to another thin client in the morning and resume your session?

• Can't install "Docky" theme?

  So to install a theme for Docky on Ubuntu I had to extract the theme from the Archive Manager via root to /usr/local/share/docky/themes. I did this but it didn't show up in the theme choices. Then I tried just pressing the install button and locating it but I couldn't see the tar file. I then extracted the tar file to the desktop and tried selecting that to install but nothing. What am I doing wrong!?

• Still no external sound after installing ubuntu 10.04

  As suggested I upgraded. Same as before except now not even the speaker control in the application bar. Please help. Background: I have Ubuntu 9.10. Headphones appear to work fine. External speakers - nothing. There are so many sound preferences I have no idea what or which combination. Went to terminal and ran alsamixer which seems to recognize my sound card, though the driver is not listed in System Administration Hardware Drivers; the only driver listed is my graphics card. Setup: I have a Dell 8250. Speakers are plugged into the SB live card. Woofer and 2 speakers using transformer.
