  • Feasability of reverse engineering some embedded code

    - by user258526
    All, My company is in the situation where we are using an embedded control system from another company in another country. We do not have the source code or the schematics to this system, and the manufacturer doesn't want to release them, seemingly at any price or under any terms. We are thus stuck with a 6 month turn around to get even a small modification done, and they can basically charge any amount they want. Legal aspects aside, would it be at all feasible to reverse engineer the embedded code back into C? Do any companies exist that could do this for us? Thank you, Fred

  • West Palm Beach .Net User Group Meeting - April 27th 2010 - Ted Neward - MVP & INETA Speaker

    - by Sam Abraham
    Ted Neward, MVP & INETA Speaker spoke to us at the West Palm Beach .Net User Group meeting at CompTec about Microsoft OSLO and DSLs on Tuesday April 27th 2010. Ted kept the audience well engaged throughout his presentation and shared his experience with DSLs in a humorous and fun setting. At the conclusion of the talk, we had our free raffle and concluded the evening with networking while enjoying the pizza and soda brought to us by Sherlock Technology (www.sherstaff.com) This meeting was also Vishal Shukla's last appearance at the West Palm Beach .Net User Group as he will be leaving for India in mid-May. Vishal has worked hard side-by-side with the Fladotnet leadership to run the West Palm Beach Group and will sure be missed by all of us. On behalf of the group, I would like to wish Vishal best of luck on his future endeavors and we are all looking forward to seeing him again soon. Thank you Ted for making such a long trip from Redmond to FL to share with us your expertise and knowledge of DSLs and thank you INETA for making this happen with your support of user groups. You can get in touch with Ted through his website (www.tedneward.com)

  • How do I permanently disable Linux's console screen saver, system-wide?

    - by raldi
    I've got an Ubuntu server that boots up in text mode. It rarely has a screen or keyboard attached to it, but when I do attach a screen, I usually have to attach a keyboard too, because the darn console mode screen saver will be on and I'll need to hit a key to see what's going on. I'm aware that the setterm command can disable this, but it's a per-session thing. How can I make it so the machine never ever blanks the screen in text mode, even when it's first booted up and sitting at the login prompt?

  • Enterprise online backup providers

    - by PHLiGHT
    We've used Iron Mountain's LiveVault service but found that it was only good for file level backups. We liked how it backed up every 15 minutes. It doesn't support Exchange 2007-10 and the web interface was very poor. Who else is everyone using? The most notable names in online backup such as Mozy and Carbonite don't really seem suitable for larger companies. We have SQL, Exchange and Sharepoint servers and are looking to virtualize in the near future. Until then bare metal restore capability would be nice. We are currently using Backup Exec 12.5 but that can be so troublesome at times. We have about 2 TB of data. 1TB is archival data.

  • Escaping Code for Different Shells

    - by Jon Purdy
    Question: What characters do I need to escape in a user-entered string to securely pass it into shells on Windows and Unix? What shell differences and version differences should be taken into account? Can I use printf "%q" somehow, and is that reliable across shells? Backstory (a.k.a. Shameless Self-Promotion): I made a little DSL, the Vision Web Template Language, which allows the user to create templates for X(HT)ML documents and fragments, then automatically fill them in with content. It's designed to separate template logic from dynamic content generation, in the same way that CSS is used to separate markup from presentation. In order to generate dynamic content, a Vision script must defer to a program written in a language that can handle the generation logic, such as Perl or Python. (Aside: using PHP is also possible, but Vision is intended to solve some of the very problems that PHP perpetuates.) In order to do this, the script makes use of the @system directive, which executes a shell command and expands to its output. (Platform-specific generation can be handled using @unix or @windows, which only expand on the proper platform.) The problem is obvious, I should think: test.htm: <!-- ... --> <form action="login.vis" method="POST"> <input type="text" name="USERNAME"/> <input type="password" name="PASSWORD"/> </form> <!-- ... --> login.vis: #!/usr/bin/vision # Think USERNAME = ";rm -f;" @system './login.pl' { USERNAME; PASSWORD } One way to safeguard against this kind of attack is to set proper permissions on scripts and directories, but Web developers may not always set things up correctly, and the naive developer should get just as much security as the experienced one. The solution, logically, is to include a @quote directive that produces a properly escaped string for the current platform. @system './login.pl' { @quote : USERNAME; @quote : PASSWORD } But what should @quote actually do? It needs to be both cross-platform and secure, and I don't want to create terrible problems with a naive implementation. Any thoughts?

  • Form Submitting Incorrect Information to MySQL Database

    - by ThatMacLad
    I've created a form that submits data to a MySQL database but the Date, Time, Year and Month fields constantly revert to the exact same date (1st January 1970) despite the fact that when I submit the information to the database the form displays the current date, time etc to me. I've already set it so that the time and date fields automatically display the current time and date. Could someone please help me with this. Form: <html> <head> <title>Blog | New Post</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/newposts.css" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> <div class="new-form"> <div class="header"> <a href="edit.php"><img src="images/edit-home-button.png"></a> </div> <div class="form-bg"> <?php if (isset($_POST['submit'])) { $month = htmlspecialchars(strip_tags($_POST['month'])); $date = htmlspecialchars(strip_tags($_POST['date'])); $year = htmlspecialchars(strip_tags($_POST['year'])); $time = htmlspecialchars(strip_tags($_POST['time'])); $title = htmlspecialchars(strip_tags($_POST['title'])); $entry = $_POST['entry']; $timestamp = strtotime($month .   • select GUI on windows (wxPy vs pyQt)

    - by Golovko
    Hello! We are plan to create an application for monitoring and configuring our service (which is running on remote server). After long time discuss, we decide for python as pl for our app, because we love and know python (better, than english, really). but we don't know, what GUI toolkit preffered for our aims. We need fast (for development and running) app, which users are admins, mainteners and account managers. There is two GUI toolkit for python, which we know: wxPython and pyQT. Anybody have arguments pro et contra candidat? And maybe peoples know commercial applications, running in this products (only python version of toolkits)? Links are desirable. Thanks, and excuse my english.

  • Problem with ajax and posting non-latin characters

    - by jason
    Posting non-latin based languages with ajax + jquery doesn't save to mysql the correct text. What I have done is this: I am getting multiple translated words from Google's translation api. The ajax request is showing the correct translations for all languages. But when i try and insert this into the db it shows up in php my admin as garbled text I added AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 to .htaccess file on the root. I tried setting the header in php to utf-8 and this did not work. I have tried adding a contentType to ajax setup but this didn't work also. Any suggestions appreciated. jason

  • Is there really such a thing as a char or short in modern programming?

    - by Dean P
    Howdy all, I've been learning to program for a Mac over the past few months (I have experience in other languages). Obviously that has meant learning the Objective C language and thus the plainer C it is predicated on. So I have stumbles on this quote, which refers to the C/C++ language in general, not just the Mac platform. With C and C++ prefer use of int over char and short. The main reason behind this is that C and C++ perform arithmetic operations and parameter passing at integer level, If you have an integer value that can fit in a byte, you should still consider using an int to hold the number. If you use a char, the compiler will first convert the values into integer, perform the operations and then convert back the result to char. So my question, is this the case in the Mac Desktop and IPhone OS environments? I understand when talking about theses environments we're actually talking about 3-4 different architectures (PPC, i386, Arm and the A4 Arm variant) so there may not be a single answer. Nevertheless does the general principle hold that in modern 32 bit / 64 bit systems using 1-2 byte variables that don't align with the machine's natural 4 byte words doesn't provide much of the efficiency we may expect. For instance, a plain old C-Array of 100,000 chars is smaller than the same 100,000 ints by a factor of four, but if during an enumeration, reading out each index involves a cast/boxing/unboxing of sorts, will we see overall lower 'performance' despite the saved memory overhead?

  • How to validate DataReader is actually closed using FxCop custom rule?

    - by tanmay
    I have written couple of custom rules in for FxCop 1.36. I have written code to find weather an opened DataReader is closed or not. But it does not check which DataReader object is calling the Close() method so I can't be sure if all opened DataReader objects are closed!! 2nd: If I am a DataReader in an 'if/else' like if 1=2 dr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); else dr = cmd2.ExecuteReader(); end if In this case it will search for 2 DataReader objects to be closed. I am putting my code for more clarity. public override ProblemCollection Check(Member member) { Method method = member as Method; int countCatch =0; int countErrLog = 0; Instruction objInstr = null; if (method != null) { for (int i = 0; i < method.Instructions.Count; i++) { objInstr = method.Instructions[i]; if (objInstr.Value != null) { if (objInstr.Value.ToString() .Contains("System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader")) { countCatch += 1; } if (countCatch>0) { if (objInstr.Value.ToString().Contains( "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader.Close")) { countErrLog += 1; } } } } } if (countErrLog!=countCatch) { Resolution resolu = GetResolution(new string[] { method.ToString() }); Problems.Add(new Problem(resolu)); } return Problems; }

  • How can I make this client as a multithread client?

    - by Johanna
    Hi, I have read a lot about multithread client but for this one,I can not make it multithread! would you please help me? public class MainClient implements Runnable{ private static InformationClass info = new InformationClass(); private static Socket c; private static String text; public static String getText() { return text; } public static void setText(String text) { MainClient.text = text; } private static PrintWriter os; private static BufferedReader is; static boolean closed = false; /** * @param args the command line arguments */ public static void main(String[] args) { MainFrame farme = new MainFrame(); farme.setVisible(true); try { c = new Socket("localhost", 5050); os = new PrintWriter(c.getOutputStream(), true); is = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(c.getInputStream())); } catch (UnknownHostException ex) { Logger.getLogger(MainClient.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } catch (IOException ex) { Logger.getLogger(MainClient.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } } public static void active() { String teXt = MainClient.getText(); System.out.println(teXt); os.println(teXt); try { String line = is.readLine(); System.out.println("Text received: " + line); os.flush(); is.close(); is.close(); c.close(); } catch (IOException ex) { Logger.getLogger(MainClient.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } } } also active method will be called when the client write something on the text area and then clicks on the send button. 2) also i have a question that: in the other class I have this action performed for my send button,does it mean that client is multithread?? private void jButton1ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) { new Thread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { // This gets run in a background thread String text = jTextArea1.getText(); jTextArea2.append(client.getCurrentName() + " : " + text + "\n"); MainClient.setText(client.getCurrentName() + " : " + text + "\n"); clear(); MainClient.active(); } }).start(); } Last EDIT: this is my active method: public static void active() { String teXt = MainClient.getText(); os.println(teXt); String line = is.readLine(); System.out.println("Text received: " + line); os.flush(); is.close(); is.close(); c.close(); }

  • Google JavaScript CAPTCHA handling

    - by Sam
    I am using Google API's to provide maps on a web page, however, Google frequently prompts for a CAPTCHA (I only know this from going into Firebug, users just get a JavaScript error) for requests for its javascript API's (e.g. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?file=api&v=2&key=xxxx). However, this prevents visitors from our network (a very large (UK wide) WAN) using Google Maps etc from using these sites with it on. This is likely due to the fact the IP is shared by many people, so Google sees it as spam. I don't see any way of contacting Google about this, so was wondering if there is any way of intercepting these failing JavaScript requests since they return a 403 status code? Perhaps by opening a new window, although that would not be user friendly (they will see the JavaScript after the CAPTCHA, so would be a cause of confusion and would need to refresh the page in question).

  • Visual Studio Crashes when using Crystal Reports Group Editor

    - by Matthew Taylor
    I have a crystal report in my Visual Studio 2008 ASP.NET project, and when I choose "Group Expert" from the Crystal Reports - Report menu, Visual Studio crashes / hangs and I have to use Task Manager to close the program. This happens no matter how many times I try, and oddly enough it seems to work fine on another computer with the same project. Any help at all in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Developer SP2, Windows Vista Enterprise SP1, and the version of Crystal Reports that came with the Visual Studio installation.

  • mod_fcgid process doesn't respawn

    - by aaronsw
    I have a Python script running on my server as a FastCGI using Apache2 and mod_fcgid. I let it spawn up to five processes. But I soon get messages like these in the Apache logs: [Wed Sep 02 23:16:34 2009] [warn] (103)Software caused connection abort: mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request function [Wed Sep 02 23:16:35 2009] [warn] (103)Software caused connection abort: mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request function and then Apache doesn't seem to recognize that all its processes are dead (I have a max of 5 backends) and refuses to spawn new ones: [Wed Sep 02 23:26:16 2009] [notice] mod_fcgid: /var/www/hacks.og.theinfo.org/picker.fcgi total process count 5 >= 5, skip the spawn request [Wed Sep 02 23:26:17 2009] [notice] mod_fcgid: /var/www/hacks.og.theinfo.org/picker.fcgi total process count 5 >= 5, skip the spawn request at which point it refuses to respond to requests from the outside world. This doesn't seem to happen with my other FastCGIs, which all use the same Apache config: <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi IPCConnectTimeout 20 MaxProcessCount 5 DefaultMaxClassProcessCount 2 DefaultMinClassProcessCount 1 </IfModule> Any idea what causes it?

  • Refresh bounded taskflows across regions using InputParameters

    - by raghu.yadav
    Usecase1 : Selecting record from table in left region reflects dependent detail form of same table in right region using InputParameters Here is the example given by Andre Example Three important crux to be known from above example. 1) create primary key attribute in pagedef of the table in region1 2) add inputparameter name in taskflow inputparameters of region2 3) bind primary key attribute from page definition to above inputparameters in main page where above 2 regions dropped. UseCase2 : Selecting record from location table in left region reflects corresponding department records from department table in right regions. 1) create bind variable on location id in departmentVO. 2) create inputparameter say LocationParam, with type Number, value as #{pageFlowScope.LocationParam} 3) assign LocationId param from pagedef to LocationParam in taskflow2 4) create ExecuteWithParam action in region2 pagedef and invoke the same on IfRefresh condition. during run time - steps executes in backwards (3,2,1)..i,e as user selects column in location table, it assigns location from pagedef to locationParam and then to PageFlowScope and from there to view criteria.

  • Optimizing GDI+ drawing?

    - by user146780
    I'm using C++ and GDI+ I'm going to be making a vector drawing application and want to use GDI+ for the drawing. I'v created a simple test to get familiar with it: case WM_PAINT: GetCursorPos(&mouse); GetClientRect(hWnd,&rct); hdc = BeginPaint(hWnd, &ps); MemDC = CreateCompatibleDC(hdc); bmp = CreateCompatibleBitmap(hdc, 600, 600); SelectObject(MemDC,bmp); g = new Graphics(MemDC); for(int i = 0; i < 1; ++i) { SolidBrush sb(Color(255,255,255)); g->FillRectangle(&sb,rct.top,rct.left,rct.right,rct.bottom); } for(int i = 0; i < 250; ++i) { pts[0].X = 0; pts[0].Y = 0; pts[1].X = 10 + mouse.x * i; pts[1].Y = 0 + mouse.y * i; pts[2].X = 10 * i + mouse.x; pts[2].Y = 10 + mouse.y * i; pts[3].X = 0 + mouse.x; pts[3].Y = (rand() % 600) + mouse.y; Point p1, p2; p1.X = 0; p1.Y = 0; p2.X = 300; p2.Y = 300; g->FillPolygon(&b,pts,4); } BitBlt(hdc,0,0,900,900,MemDC,0,0,SRCCOPY); EndPaint(hWnd, &ps); DeleteObject(bmp); g->ReleaseHDC(MemDC); DeleteDC(MemDC); delete g; break; I'm wondering if I'm doing it right, or if I have areas killing the cpu. Because right now it takes ~ 1sec to render this and I want to be able to have it redraw itself very quickly. Thanks In a real situation would it be better just to figure out the portion of the screen to redraw and only redraw the elements withing bounds of this?

  • algorithm to find Best 8 minute window in a 1 hour run

    - by Arun
    I have a requirement like, an activity runs for about more than an hour. I need to get the best 8 minute window where some parameters are maximum. say a value x, which is dynamic for every second. if my activity runs for one hr,i get 3600 values for x. I need to find the best continuous 8 minute time interval where x value was the highest among all the others. if i capture say from 0th minute to 8th minute, there may be another time frame like 0.4 to 8.4 where it was maximum. the granularity is one second. every second we need to consider. basically the peak 8 minute window where x was maximum. please help me with the design
