  • Is there programming language with better approach for switch's break statements ?

    It's the same syntax in a way too many languages: switch (someValue) { case OPTION_ONE: case OPTION_LIKE_ONE: case OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR: doSomeStuff1(); break; // EXIT the switch case OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION: doPreActionStuff2(); // the default is to CONTINUE to next case case OPTION_TWO: doSomeStuff2(); break; // EXIT the switch case OPTION_THREE: doSomeStuff3(); break; // EXIT the switch } Now all you know that break statements are required, because the switch will continue to the next case when break statement is missing. We have an example of that with OPTION_LIKE_ONE, OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR and OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION. The problem is that we only need this "skip to next case" very very very rarely. And very often we put break at the end of case. It very easy for a beginner to forget about it. And one of my C teachers even explained it to us as if it was a bug in C language (don't want to talk about it :) I would like to ask if there are any other languages that I don't know of (or forgot about) that handle switch/case like this: switch (someValue) { case OPTION_ONE: continue; // CONTINUE to next case case OPTION_LIKE_ONE: continue; // CONTINUE to next case case OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR: doSomeStuff1(); // the default is to EXIT the switch case OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION: doPreActionStuff2(); continue; // CONTINUE to next case case OPTION_TWO: doSomeStuff2(); // the default is to EXIT the switch case OPTION_THREE: doSomeStuff3(); // the default is to EXIT the switch } The second question: is there any historical meaning to why it is like this in C? May be continue to next case was used far more often than we use it these days ?

  • Backup/Multihomed network connection

    We have a couple locations that require 24/7 access to Internet and our current provider (AT&T) while mostly good is not always up. My concern would be if I go with another provider (for example Comcast) I'm going to be subject to the same down time if it's in the "last mile". I for the most part don't know where the failure points are on the ISP side but I would imagine the large majority are within the last mile. I'd looked at Mifi or similar solution but have concerns about bandwidth caps and overall speed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • nginx caching per user agent

    I'm currently using nginx as reverse proxy with caching enabled. However, the main site has two different layouts, depending on the user-agent (mobile or not). I've tried something similar to this: # mobile users if ($http_user_agent ~* '(iPhone|iPod|mobile|Android|2.0\ MMP|240x320|AvantGo|BlackBerry|Blazer|Cellphone|Danger|DoCoMo|Elaine/3.0|EudoraWeb|hiptop|IEMobile)') { set $iphone_request '1'; } if ($iphone_request = '1') { proxy_cache mobile; } if ($iphone_request = '') { proxy_cache site; } proxy_cache_key "$scheme://$host$request_uri"; proxy_pass http://real-site.tld; However, nginx gives an error, stating proxy_cache can't be used in an if-structure.   • Installation of Mac OS X 10.6.2 in VMware Workstation

    I had run Mac OS X by using VMware Workstation 7.0 on my Windows PC. I installed Mac OS X 10.4.8 succesfully. But I can't install Mac OS X 10.6.2. It shows an error that "invalid front-side bus frequency 66000000 hz, disabling cpu". Please help me solve this and suggest any link to easily install Mac OS X 10.6.2 succesfully.

  • Find the IP of the router between me and main router/gateway?

    I have a Netgear router that is the main router/gateway in and out of the network. Then I have a Linksys 54g router with WiFi that we use as are main WiFi access point The Cat5 runs from the router to the WiFi routers LAN port (not WAN). And then if you connect to that WAP you are basically on the network. I want to be able to find out what the IP address of that WAP is but so far I can't figure out how to: I've tried doing a tracert to the gateway IP but I get nothing. I've scanned all the IP addressed in the network. I've gone to the Netgear main router and looked under attached devices but it doesn't say anything. Any ideas on how I can figure out how to administer it? (I do have limited physical access but my attempt to plug into it came back with a faulty IP (in the 169 range where the rest of the office is 192.168...). I never set this router up to begin with so I'm reluctant to just kill it with the reset button because I can't get into see what the settings are set to.

  • iPhone: Software Development And Distribution

    I have a few quick questions about the iPhone software development. I did some research about the topic, but there are a few specific things I would like to ask here, because I will have to estimate the cost of the required hardware and software, before I am allowed to buy anything. I never did any Mac development nor have I ever owned an iPhone, so needless to say this is quite hard for me. I will buy an iMac mini with 2 GB RAM for iPhone development. I will have to use it at the same time as my regular PC, but the majority of the time I won't use the Mac at all. Do I have to buy an additional monitor, a mouse and a keyboard or is there a better solution? I will have to port a C library to the iPhone platform and develop an iPhone application that uses the ported library. Do I need anything else than the iPhone SDK to do this? If I use an external library (see above), can I test the application with the integrated emulator, or is it recommend to buy the device? In a later phase of the project I will have to buy an iPhone, but I will have to wait until the iPhone 4 is released here in Europe, because the application requires a camera. In addition to this I will have to send data to a remote webservice. Aside from these two things I don't require any other features. Can I just buy the iPhone online from another country (the iPhones here are sim locked), or should I buy one with a contract? When the application is ready, it will be installed on a few iPhones owned by our customer. Because of security reasons it is crucial that there is no third party involved in this process (i.e. the application should not be distributed on the app store). Is this possible?
