  • Strategies for Error Handling in .NET Web Services

    I have a fairly substantial library of web services built in .NET that I use as a data model for our company web sites. In most .NET applications I use the Global ASAX file for profiling, logging, and creating bug reports for all exceptions thrown by the application. Global ASAX isn't available for web services so I'm curious as to what other strategies people have come up with to work around this limitation. Currently I just do something along these lines: <WebMethod()> _ Public Function MyServiceMethod(ByVal code As Integer) As String Try Return processCode(code) Catch ex As Exception CustomExHandler(ex) 'call a custom function every time to log exceptions Return errorObject End Try End Function Anybody have a better way of doing things besides calling a function inside the Catch?

  • Distinguishing between .NET exception types

    For the love of all things holy, how do you distinguish between different "exception flavors" within the predefined .NET exception classes? For example, a piece of code might throw an XmlException under the following conditions: The root element of the document is NULL Invalid chars are in the document The document is too long All of these are thrown as XmlException objects and all of the internal "tell me more about this exception" fields (such as Exception.HResult, Exception.Data, etc.) are usually empty or null. That leaves Exception.Message as the only thing that allows you to distinguish among these exception types, and you can't really depend on it because, you guessed it, the Exception.Message string is glocabilized, and can change when the culture changes. At least that's my read on the documentation. Exception.HResult and Exception.Data are widely ignored across the .NET libraries. They are the red-headed stepchildren of the world's .NET error-handling code. And even assuming they weren't, the HRESULT type is still the worst, downright nastiest error code in the history of error codes. Why we are still looking at HRESULTs in 2010 is beyond me. I mean if you're doing Interop or P/Invoke that's one thing but... HRESULTs have no place in System.Exception. HRESULTs are a wart on the proboscis of System.Exception. But seriously, it means I have to set up a lot of detailed specific error-handling code in order to figure out the same information that should have been passed as part of the exception data. Exceptions are useless if they force you to work like this. What am I doing wrong?

  • JUnit unable to find tests in Eclipse

    I have a strange issue with JUnit 4 tests in Eclipse 3.5 that I couldn't solve - any hints gratefully received! Initially: I had a test suite working properly, with 100+ tests all configured with JUnit 4 annotations. I'd run these typically by right clicking on my source folder and selecting "Run as JUnit test". All worked perfectly. Now: When I try to run the test messages all I get is an error "No tests found with test runner 'JUnit 4'". Any idea what is happening? I simply can't work out what could have changed to make this fail. My guess is that it is some configuration issue based on the build path or class path?

  • Is it possible to auto generate Getter/Setter from Array Values in PHP?

    So I have a couple of arrays $array_1 = Array('one','two','three'); $array_2 = Array('red','blue','green'); Is there a dynamic way to create the Setters and Getters for an array with single value entries? So the class would be something like: class xFromArray() { } So the above if I passed $array_1 it would generate something like this: private $one; setOne($x) { $one = $x; } getOne() { return $one; } if I passed $array_2 it would generate something like this: private $red; setRed($x) { $red = $x; } getRed() { return $red; } So I would call it somehow like this? (My best guess but doesn't seem that this would work) $xFromArray = new xFromArray; foreach($array_1 as $key=>$data) { $xFromArray->create_function(set.ucfirst($data)($data)); echo $xFromArray->create_function(get.ucfirst($data)); }

  • Address String Split in javscript

    Ok folks I have bombed around for a few days trying to find a good solution for this one. What I have is two possible address formats. 28 Main St Somecity, NY 12345-6789 or Main St Somecity, Ny 12345-6789 What I need to do Is split both strings down into an array structured as such address[0] = HousNumber address[1] = Street address[2] = City address[3] = State address[4] = ZipCode My major problem is how to account for the lack of a house number. with out having the whole array shift the data up one. address[0] = Street address[1] = City address[2] = State address[3] = ZipCode [Edit] For those that are wondering this is what i am doing atm .   • GridView with horizontal scroll

    I currently have a GridView scrolling vertically, and everything works fine. But now that I want to change my layout and have the gridview grow on its width instead of height as it grows bigger I am lost. I have tried to simply change the column width each time an item is added to the gridview. But no vertical scroll appears, even though the items are added correctly. Is there a neat way to fix this, or must I make my own gridview? :( Cheers,

  • While using ConcurrentQueue, trying to dequeue while looping through in parallel

    I am using the parallel data structures in my .NET 4 application and I have a ConcurrentQueue that gets added to while I am processing through it. I want to do something like: personqueue.AsParallel().WithDegreeOfParallelism(20).ForAll(i => ... ); as I make database calls to save the data, so I am limiting the number of concurrent threads. But, I expect that the ForAll isn't going to dequeue, and I am concerned about just doing ForAll(i => { personqueue.personqueue.TryDequeue(...); ... }); as there is no guarantee that I am popping off the correct one. So, how can I iterate through the collection and dequeue, in a parallel fashion. Or, would it be better to use PLINQ to do this processing, in parallel?

  • .Net regex: what is the word character \w?

    Simple question: What is the pattern for the word character \w in c#, .net? My first thought was that it matches [A-Za-z0-9_] and the documentation tells me: Character class Description Pattern Matches \w Matches any \w "I", "D", "A", "1", "3" word character. in "ID A1.3" which is not very helpful. And \w seems to match äöü, too. What else? Is there a better (exact) definition available?

  • Trying to make mod_rewrite to work on Windows

    Hello guys, I'm having some trouble confinguring Apache mod_rewrite on Windows. I'm using latest version of XAMPP on Windows Vista. Here's my httpd.conf file: LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All </Directory> <Directory "D:/Server"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> My .htacces file looks like this: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /wcc/ RewriteRule ^red-wines/$ /red-wines.php [L] When I try to access http://localhost/wcc/red-wines/ I get a 404 not found error. Any ideea why? Thanks.

  • VS2008 is very slow on a specific large C++ solution

    I have a solution with 21 C++ projects and 1 VB.NET project. The IDE responds very slowly when I simply move the carret in a file or try to open the menu. The process seems to take 50% of CPU for each movement. It only happens with this solution and only on my machine. The solution has total of 2380 source and header files, of which 1280 are header files. I tried to remove all connection to the source control (Perforce) but it didn't help. Also, I have Visual Assist installed but even after removing it (uninstall), the same behavior continued. Any idea?

I can do that manually, but i want this to be dynamic, so i don't have to change both items everytime the version changes.     I've currently got a class that can notify a number of other objects via callbacks: class Callback { virtual NodulesChanged() =0; virtual TurkiesTwisted() =0; }; class Notifier { std::vector<Callback*> m_Callbacks; void AddCallback(Callback* cb) {m_Callbacks.push(cb); } ... void ChangeNodules() { for (iterator it=m_Callbacks.begin(); it!=m_Callbacks.end(); it++) { (*it)->NodulesChanged(); } } }; I'm considering changing this to use boost's signals and slots as it would be beneficial to reduce the likelihood of dangling pointers when the callee gets deleted, among other things. However, as it stands boost's signals seems more oriented towards dealing with function objects. What would be the best way of adapting my code to still use the callback interface but use signals and slots to deal with the connection and notification aspects?

The sample data has two instances of duplicates for testing purposes. The commented line is an alternate, although I believe incorrect, attempt to compare the section with the string in the tempArray. What am I doing incorrectly? Also, all data is in capital letters, so the comparison is not a matter of lower to upper case.
