  • What vim features do you use?

    I spend almost all day programming in vim and I am sure that a lot of you do too. What features do you use that make your day to day coding that much better? One that I use is gv, which will let you reselect the previously selected text. Great for reindenting!

  • Does anyone own a compaq 610? Fan Issues.

    Hi, I've just purchased 2 HP compaq 610s and both have the same problem, that the fan is constantly on and the base is fairly hot. HP assures me that this is unusual and that I should return them as DOA. Becasue both laptops have this issue, I think that it may be a design flaw rather than a one off problem. Can any 610 owners comment? Is their fan constantly on too?

  • Custom http service responds fine to local IP address but NOT to localhost or 127.0.0.1

    I'm trying to connect to a custom http service written by another developer. The service responds fine on a local IP address and port number. Such as: http://10.1.1.1:1234 but it does NOT respond to http://localhost:1234 or http://127.0.0.1:1234 The service is a simple single function application written in VC++ that takes an http post string and returns another string. I'm trying to all it from C# using HttpWebRequest.GetResponse, but I can reproduce the same problem manually from a web browser... Test environment is Windows 2008 Server. Bottom line I'm looking for some troubleshooting tips to help the other developer fix his code.

  • JSON from $.each()

    I'm trying to get a list of the values of all checked checkboxes that looks like this: foo = { 'colors': ['blue', 'red', 'green'], 'flavors': ['vanilla', 'chocolate'] }; This is the approach I'm taking so far, but JS is saying that 'colors' doesn't exist when I try to push a new value to it. I'm assuming this is a scope issue but I don't know how to fix it. var foo = {}; foo.colors = []; $(".colors:checked").each(function(){ foo.colors.push($(this).val()); });

  • Active Record two belongs_to calls or single table inheritance

    In linking a sports event to two teams, at first this seemed to make sense: events - id:integer - integer:home_team_id - integer:away_team_id teams - integer:id - string:name However I am troubled by how I would link that up in the active record model: class Event belongs_to :home_team, :class_name => 'Team', :foreign_key => "home_team_id" belongs_to :away_team, :class_name => 'Team', :foreign_key => "away_team_id" end Is that the best solution? In an answer to a similar question I was pointed to single table inheritance, and then later found polymorphic associations. Neither of which seemed to fit this association. Perhaps I am looking at this wrong, but I see no need to subclass a team into home and away teams since the distinction is only in where the game is played. If I did go with single table inheritance I wouldn't want each team to belong_to an event so would this work? # app/models/event.rb class Event < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :home_team belongs_to :away_team end # app/models/team.rb class Team < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :teams end # app/models/home_team.rb class HomeTeam < Team end # app/models/away_team.rb class AwayTeam < Team end I thought also about a has_many through association but that seems two much as I will only ever need two teams, but those two teams don't belong to any one event. event_teams - integer:event_id - integer:team_id - boolean:is_home Is there a cleaner more semantic way for making these associations in active record? or is one of these solutions the best choice?   • Access location variable in another process

    I have a locationmanager in my main program which is called HomeViewController which I get the latitude and longitude and store them in LAT and LON. I can use LAT and LON in HomeViewController just fine. Once I go to another controller which is sending pictures and setting properties on flicker I want to use LAT and LON, how do I do this? I tried putting HomeViewController.LAT but obviously that does not work, I'm pretty new to the language so I am confused.

  • Ruby TCPSocket doesn't notice it when server is killed

    I've this ruby code that connects to a TCP server (namely, netcat). It loops 20 times, and sends "ABCD ". If I kill netcat, it takes TWO iterations of the loop for an exception to be triggered. On the first loop after netcat is killed, no exception is triggered, and "send" reports that 5 bytes have been correctly written... Which in the end is not true, since of course the server never received them. Is there a way to work around this issue ? The difficulty is however, that I have to later collect all the results for the SubProblems and merge (reduce) them into a Result for the whole Problem. This is however, costly, so I want to give the workers "chunks" that are as big as possible (has as many targetedSections as possible). It doesn't have to be perfect (mathematically as efficient as possible or something). I mean, I guess that it is impossible to have a perfect solution, because you can't predict how long each computation will take, etc.. But is there a good heuristic solution for this? Or maybe some resources I can read up before I go into designing? Any advice is highly appreciated!

  • Adding images to an array memory issue

    Hello all, I'm currently facing the following issue: My app dynamically creates images (320 x 480 pixels) and adds them to a NSMutableArray. I need those images inside that array in order to allow users to browse through them back and forth. I only need to keep the latest 5 images. So I wrote a method like below: - (void)addImageToArray:(UIImage*)theImage { if ([myMutableArray count] < 5) { [myMutableArray addObject:theImage]; } else { [myMutableArray removeObjectAtIndex:0]; [myMutableArray addObject:theImage]; } } This method basically does what it's supposed to do. However, in instruments I can see, that memory usage is permanently incrementing. At some point, even though I do not have any memory leaks, the app finally crashes. The way I see it, XCode does remove the image from my array, but does not release it. Is there a way I can make sure, that the object I want to remove from my array will also get released? Maybe my approach is completely wrong and I need to find a different way. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Hi, I have a method in my application called "Save as" which Saves the image of my application on computer my into a file. I used the JFileChooser to let the users choose their desired location for saving the file. The problem is unless user explicitly types in the file format, it saves the file with no extension. How can I have formats like jpg, png in the File Type drop down menu. and, how can i get extension from the File Type drop menu for saving my image file. ImageIO.write(image,extension,file);

  • Webbrowser control and cookies

    Hello! I have a webbrowser control in my program and what I want to do is to delete all the cookies stored in my computer. The problem is that for example I'm in some site, and then I decide I want to delete all the cookies, so I do it by the command "Kill()" but the problem is that the cookies remain and this site still can recognize me, and to complete the kill command I need to close my program and enter it again. The webbrowser control uses Internet Explorer, and I think when you enter IE it somehow loads all the cookies into it so if you delete your cookies, they remain there. So I'm wondering how can I delete my cookies, completely delete them without the need to close my program and enter it once again. Any help will be appreciated!
