• What is in your Mathematica tool bag?

  We all know that Mathematica is great, but it also often lacks critical functionality. What kind of external packages / tools / resources do you use with Mathematica? I'll edit (and invite anyone else to do so too) this main post to include resources which are focused on general applicability in scientific research and which as many people as possible will find useful. Feel free to contribute anything, even small code snippets (as I did below for a timing routine). Also, undocumented and useful features in Mathematica 7 and beyond you found yourself, or dug up from some paper/site are most welcome. Please include a short description or comment on why something is great or what utility it provides. If you link to books on Amazon with affiliate links please mention it, e.g., by putting your name after the link. Packages: LevelScheme is a package that greatly expands Mathematica's capability to produce good looking plots. I use it if not for anything else then for the much, much improved control over frame/axes ticks. David Park's Presentation Package ($50 - no charge for updates) Tools: MASH is Daniel Reeves's excellent perl script essentially providing scripting support for Mathematica 7. (This is finally built in as of Mathematica 8 with the -script option.) Resources: Wolfram's own repository MathSource has a lot of useful if narrow notebooks for various applications. Also check out the other sections such as Current Documentation, Courseware for lectures, and Demos for, well, demos. Books: Mathematica programming: an advanced introduction by Leonid Shifrin (web, pdf) is a must read if you want to do anything more than For loops in Mathematica. Quantum Methods with Mathematica by James F. Feagin (amazon) The Mathematica Book by Stephen Wolfram (amazon) (web) Schaum's Outline (amazon) Mathematica in Action by Stan Wagon (amazon) - 600 pages of neat examples and goes up to Mathematica version 7. Visualization techniques are especially good, you can see some of them on the author's Demonstrations Page. Mathematica Programming Fundamentals by Richard Gaylord (pdf) - A good concise introduction to most of what you need to know about Mathematica programming. • iPhone memory management (with specific examples/questions)

  Hey all. I know this question's been asked but I still don't have a clear picture of memory management in Objective-C. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of it, but I'd still like some correct answers for the following code. I have a series of examples that I'd love for someone(s) to clarify. Setting a value for an instance variable. Say I have an NSMutableArray variable. In my class, when I initialize it, do I need to call a retain on it? Do I do fooArray = [[[NSMutableArray alloc] init] retain]; or fooArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; Does doing [[NSMutableArray alloc] init] already set the retain count to 1, so I wouldn't need to call retain on it? On the other hand, if I called a method that I know returns an autoreleased object, I would for sure have to call retain on it, right? Like so: fooString = [[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d items", someInt] retain]; Properties. I ask about the retain because I'm a bit confused about how @property's automatic setter works. If I had set fooArray to be a @property with retain set, Objective-C will automatically create the following setter, right? - (void)setFooArray:(NSMutableArray *)anArray { [fooArray release]; fooArray = [anArray retain]; } So, if I had code like this: self.fooArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; (which I believe is valid code), Objective-C creates a setter method that calls retain on the value assigned to fooArray. In this case, will the retain count actually be 2? Correct way of setting a value of a property. I know there are questions on this and (possibly) debates, but which is the right way to set a @property? This? self.fooArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; Or this? NSMutableArray *anArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; self.fooArray = anArray; [anArray release]; I'd love to get some clarification on these examples. Thanks!

• replacing buffalo lonkstations with FreeNAS, overall backup strategy, am I on the right path?

  We've been using 2 Buffalo LinkStations of 320Gb each for shared directory and employee's server storage (around 20 employees). So only documents (word, excel, cad drawings etc.) and database backup of the main application server (ERP, Accounting) 1 buffalo box serves as a main one, located at the server room, next to the main application server and the other buffalo box is located on the opposite side of the building (for fire protection) in a secure storage room and backs up the first one. We also have several external HDs that backs up everything from the buffalo box for an offsite backup. After 3.5 years of using these, capacity is a main limitation, I'm planning a replacement and would like to use FreeNAS (we already use monowall with great success). I would like to keep it simple and continue similar setup, building two low power boxes with 1 hd (2Tb) each. Is low power atom mobo OK? Not sure about HDs? I've read on this site somebody mentioning more seagate ES2 as more reliable and better performing. How would those eco/green drives compare. We've been pretty happy with speed of Buffalo boxes and I don't want my users to notice any slowdown. Any suggestion?

  Running windows 7 64, Is there any application that allows me to connect an additional keeyboard and mice and monitor, so that this can be used by other user at the samee time while I use the main computer, There is an application called cpnmouse but it doesnt work on win7, betwin crashes before win7 start up, teamplayer is too expensive Has anyone figured out this functionality maybe with virtual machinees or something, i've tried team player in a virtual machine but it crashes I have 3 monitors one of theem is a Tv, i would like that my girlfried uses it as a terminal without me loosing the focus cause she uses the mice There is a linux software called userful, but it's linux and doesnt work for me, and windows multipoint server needs a clean installation and also that's not a valid choice

• ibm t61 battery isn't charged

  I've just bought IBM T61 laptop and it has non-orginal battery. Everything was ok (laptop worked without being plugged), but something has changed, and now battery isn't charged. Power Manager says: "This system may not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo-made or authorized. This sytem will contunue to boot, but may not charge unauthorized batteries" (screen: http://i52.tinypic.com/2ywhdns.png) I have no idea, what to do, how to solve this problem. Thank's for help.

• 3½" PATA Western Digital Caviar SE (250MB) makes steady ticking sound when idle

  I've started to notice a ticking sound emanating from my WD2500JB. It is not alarmingly loud. The sound seems to occur only when the drive has been idle for some time, and will cease upon (some?) disk activity. The sound has a regular, steady cadence of somewhere between about 4 and 6 ticks per second. I'm not entirely certain that it just started making these sounds, since I previously had the drive — mounted in a USB enclosure — stored out of earshot, and only recently moved it to where I can hear it. The SMART attributes for the drive do not indicate any problems. I did have some errors to clean up recently (since I started noticing the sounds). The errors occurred on an ext3 filesystem. The drive had been powered down while mounted a few times prior to that fsck. Is this cause for alarm? Should I scrap the drive on principle?

• Installing on a Lenovo S10-3

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition on my Lenovo S10-3. According to the release notes, there is a bug in the kernel that forces me to add intel_idle.max_cstate=0 to the kernel parameters. I did this when booting the install CD and I was able to install Ubuntu. During the installation I chose to fetch updates from the net. Now when I try to boot the machine it just hangs. I have tried booting the machine as-is and I have tried adding the above-mentioned kernel parameters. Same experience. So, my questions is how do I install 10.10 in this machine and how do I boot it after I've installed the OS?

• Passing parameters to eventListener function

Like say to get the mainlink variable to pass through the parameters. Is this even good to do? • android localization: Is it a good practice to have only needed resource to put in localized folder?

  Hi, My application has 4 languages in it. However only one module needs to be localized out of 5, This module has 4 layout files and some images, remaining files can be there in default layout folder and drawable folders. My question is : is it good practice to put only needed files in localization folders, if I leave other files in its respective folders and don't copy them in translation folders, does my application throw NullPointerException when my application runs in other language? and Does android market have any size limit? (Also being a BB developer,AFAIK they do not allow OTA, if the application size grows more than 3 mb) [In case i need to copy the layout and image files]. Note about NullPointerException : it throws in string if you omit some string in localization and application runs in that particular locale. Thanks

• How can I deploy an Adobe Air application including the runtime in a single file executable?

  I am using 7zsfx [Link] to package Java apps together with a JRE as a single file executable. Is it possible to do something similar with Adobe AIR apps if I get a license from Adobe to distribute the runtime? Also, does anybody have any alternative ideas for deploying Adobe Air apps with an embedded runtime? (Reason: Target computers may not have the Air runtime installed, and target users may not have permissions to download and install the runtime.)

• Array Sorting Question for News System

  Hello all. I'm currently stuck trying to figure out how to sort my array files. I have a simple news posting system that stores the content in seperate .dat files and then stores them in an array. I numbered the files so that my array can sort them from lowest number to greatest; however, I have run into a small problem. To begin here is some more information on my system so that you can understand it better. The function that gathers my files is: function getNewsList() { $fileList = array(); // Open the actual directory if($handle = opendir(ABSPATH . ADMIN . "data")) { // Read all file from the actual directory while($file = readdir($handle)) { if(!is_dir($file)) { $fileList[] = $file; } } } // Return the array. return $fileList; } On a seperate file is the programming that processes the news post. I didn't post that code for simplicity's sake but I will explain how the files are named. The files are numbered and the part of the post's title is used... for the numbering I get a count of the array and add "1" as an offset. I get the title of the post, encode it to make it file-name-friendly and limit the amount of text so by the end of it all I end up with: // Make the variable that names the file that will contain // the post. $filename = "00{$newnumrows}_{$snipEncode}"; When running print_r on the above function I get: Array ( [0] => 0010_Mira_mi_Soledad.dat [1] => 0011_WOah.dat [2] => 0012_Sinep.dat [3] => 0013_Living_in_Warfa.dat [4] => 0014_Hello.dat [5] => 001_AS.dat [6] => 002_ASASA.dat [7] => 003_SSASAS.dat ... [13] => 009_ASADADASADAFDAF.dat ) And this is how my content is displayed. For some reason according to the array sorting 0010 comes before 001...? Is there a way I can get my array to sort 001 before 0010?

• Please help to clean up my RoR development environment

  I started RoR development a few months ago, and being new to Mac... Time flies and now I have a lot different ruby versions, rails versions and gems versions located everywhere......And currently I installed rvm and things got even worst, all things messed! And so I started want to clean all things and use rvm again! I want to uninstall all gems, all rails, and all ruby versions, except the system's default one (the very old one born with the mac). Or any other better solutions or suggestions!? • Troubleshooting Facebook's graph.put_object that returns error 400

  I am using Facebook Python's SDK along with Google App Engine, and making a call to do a checkin: graph.put_object("me", "checkins", message="Hello, world", place="165039136840558", coordinates='{"latitude":"38.2454064", "longitude":"-122.0434404"}') However, this throws an error 400 Bad Request and I don't seem to be able to try catch it so I can have the important information. On a bad request, Facebook should return, an object like below which can help troubleshoot and address the issue, but I am not sure how I can retrieve this object: { "error": { "type" : "OAuthException", "message" : "An active access token must be used to query information about the current user." } }

  Hi All... Based on this link I have incorporated the spring security core module with my grails project... I am using the Requestmap concept by storing each role, user and requestmap inside the database only... Now my requirement is to provide the menu items based on the users assigned roles... For e.g.: If my "User" Main Menu have following Items : Dashboard Import User Manage User And if I have assigned a roles of Dashboard and Import User to the user with a username "auditor" then, only following Menu items should be displayed on the screen : User (Main Menu) - Dashboard (sub menu) - Import User (sub menu) I have explored the Spring Security ACL plugin for the same, but it's using the Domain classes to get it working... • RMI java doesn't create skeleton class

  I wrote a remote service MyremoteImpl.java and used following command after compiled it. rmic MyRemoteImpl I learned that this method suppose to create stub class and a skeleton class but I can only see the stub class, why is that? • Examples of mobile frameworks that support AdSense for mobile content ads?

  I’ve tried, I really have, to find examples of serving up AdSense for mobile content ads in any of the popular mobile frameworks, but can’t find running webpages with ads, nor tutorials, etc.... I’ve done some iUI work, but would consider jQueryMobile, iWebKit, even sencha-touch if I could find an example that actually displays ads within the framework on an iPhone, iPod touch,etc... I realize there are issues with the HTML adSense generates, but hasn’t anyone found a work-around? Surely some mobile HTML sites must be serving up ads? Links to tutorials would be much appreciated!

  I am trying to copy a database from one folder to another. There is no program at all running except operating system.(I mean all windows shut) I keep getting this : The action cannot be completed because the file is open is another program close file and try again Try again, Try again , Try again ......... what the hell on earth is holding that file and how can I carry on with copy / delete / overwrite files(DB) as this problem is something very common.
