  • Varnish / Apache redirecting to backend port 8080

    - by deko
I'm running Varnish 2 with Apache backend at 8080 on the same machine. Everything is working fine, except one problem: Sometimes Apache(?) is redirecting to backend port :8080 especially when I'm using htaccess. Users are displayed the 8080 port in the URL and Google is crawling my site on the backend port as well, which is not desirable. I want Apache 8080 to be accessible only to Varnish on localhost, and not to redirect or display the backend port. What would be a quick way to prevent users being directed to 8080 and search engines denied crawling the backend? Here is an example htaccess line: redirect /promotion /register.php?promotion=june which causes www.domain.com/promotion to redirect to www.domain.com:8080/register.php?promotion=june

  • Appears to be "randomly" switching between the acl matched backend and the default backend

    - by Xoor
I have HAProxy acting as a proxy in front of: An NGinx instance An in-house load balancer in front of multiple dynamic services exposed with socket.io (websockets) My problem is that from time to time my connections are proxied correctly to my socket.io cluster, and then randomly it fallsback to routing to NGinx which obviously is annoying and meaningless since NGinx isn't mean't to handle the request. This happens when requesting for URLs of the format : http://mydomain.com/backends/* There's an ACL in the HAProxy config to match the '/backends/*' path. Here's a simplified version of my HAProxy config (removed extra unrelated entries and changed names): global daemon maxconn 4096 user haproxy group haproxy nbproc 4 defaults mode http timeout server 86400000 timeout connect 5000 log global #this frontend interface receives the incoming http requests frontend http-in mode http #process all requests made on port 80 bind *:80 #set a large timeout for websockets timeout client 86400000 # Default Backend default_backend www_backend # Loadfire (socket cluster) acl is_loadfire_backends path_beg /backends use_backend loadfire_backend if is_loadfire_backends # NGinx backend backend www_backend server www_nginx localhost:12346 maxconn 1024 # Loadfire backend backend loadfire_backend option forwardfor # This sets X-Forwarded-For option httpclose server loadfire localhost:7101 maxconn 2048 It's really quite confusing for me why the behaviour appears to be "random", since being hard to reproduce it's hard to debug. I appreciate any insight on this.

  • nginx: SSI working on Apache backend, but not on gunicorn backend

    - by j0nes
I have nginx in front of an Apache server and a gunicorn server for different parts of my website. I am using the SSI module in nginx to display a snippet in every page. The websites include a snippet in this form: For static pages served by nginx everything is working fine, the same goes for the Apache-generated pages - the SSI include is evaluated and the snippet is filled. However for requests to my gunicorn backend running a Python app in Django, the SSI include does not get evaluated. Here is the relevant part of the nginx config: location /cgi-bin/script.pl { ssi on; proxy_pass http://default_backend/cgi-bin/script.pl; include sites-available/aspects/proxy-default.conf; } location /directory/ { ssi on; limit_req zone=directory nodelay burst=3; proxy_pass http://django_backend/directory/; include sites-available/aspects/proxy-default.conf; } Backends: upstream django_backend { server dynamic.mydomain.com:8000 max_fails=5 fail_timeout=10s; } upstream default_backend { server dynamic.mydomain.com:80; server dynamic2.mydomain.com:80; } proxy_default.conf: proxy_redirect off; proxy_set_header Host $host; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; What is the cause for this behaviour? How can I get SSI includes working for my pages generated on gunicorn? How can I debug this further?

  • nginx : backend https, proxy_pass shows ip

    - by Vulpo
    I am using nginx as a reverse proxy listening at port 80 (http). I am using proxy_pass to forward requests to backend http and https servers. Everything works fine for my http server but when I try to reach the https server through nginx reverse proxy the ip of the https server is shown in the client's web browser. I want the uri of the nginx server to be shown instead of the https backend server's ip (once again, this works fine with the http server but not for the https server). See this post on the forum Here is my configuration file : server { listen 80; server_name domain1.com; access_log off; root /var/www; if ($request_method !~ ^(GET|HEAD|POST)$ ) { return 444; } location / { proxy_pass http://ipOfHttpServer:port/; } } server { listen 80; server_name domain2.com; access_log off; root /var/www; if ($request_method !~ ^(GET|HEAD|POST)$ ) { return 444; } location / { proxy_pass http://ipOfHttpsServer:port/; proxy_set_header X_FORWARDED_PROTO https; #proxy_set_header Host $http_host; } } When I try the "proxy_set_header Host $http_host" directive and "proxy_set_header Host $host" the web page can't be reached (page not found). But when I comment it, the ip of the https server is shown in the browser (which is bad). Does anyone have an idea ? My other configs files are : proxy_redirect off; proxy_set_header Host $host; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; #proxy_hide_header X-Powered-By; proxy_intercept_errors on; proxy_buffering on; proxy_cache_key "$scheme://$host$request_uri"; proxy_cache_path /var/cache/nginx levels=1:2 keys_zone=cache:10m inactive=7d max_size=700m; user www-data; worker_processes 2; error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log; pid /var/run/nginx.pid; events { worker_connections 1024; } http { include /etc/nginx/mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log; server_names_hash_bucket_size 64; sendfile off; tcp_nopush on; #keepalive_timeout 0; keepalive_timeout 65; tcp_nodelay on; gzip on; gzip_comp_level 5; gzip_http_version 1.0; gzip_min_length 0; gzip_types text/plain text/html text/css image/x-icon application/x-javascript; gzip_vary on; include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; include /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/*; } Thanks for your help !

  • CMS just for backend

    - by krumiro79
I'm looking for a CMS just for backend that lets you manage database tables with custom fields. I found Wordpress Pods similar to what I'm looking for, but I don't want Wordpress to manage my frontend (and Wordpress Pods don't look professional to me...) Is there something like this out there? Thank you. Sergio

  • PHP Framework / Library Suggestions for a Backend

    - by frbry
I am about to start to developing backend site of a php project. Companies and site admins will login to this site and manage their data on the project. My previous admin panel experiences were full of agony and pain. So I want to make sure that I choose correct tools for my purpose. By the way, please note, I'm not looking for scaffolding. There won't be much tables in my database. Instead, there will be complex logic between entities. I want clear seperation of markup and logic code and easy-to-use and standardized user-interface. Thank you.

  • Question about the code of the backend of symfony

    - by user248959
    Hi, this is the index action and template generated at the backend for the model "coche". public function executeIndex(sfWebRequest $request) { // sorting if ($request->getParameter('sort') && $this->isValidSortColumn($request->getParameter('sort'))) { $this->setSort(array($request->getParameter('sort'), $request->getParameter('sort_type'))); } // pager if ($request->getParameter('page')) { $this->setPage($request->getParameter('page')); } $this->pager = $this->getPager(); $this->sort = $this->getSort(); } This is the index template: <?php use_helper('I18N', 'Date') ?> <?php include_partial('coche/assets') ?> <div id="sf_admin_container"> <h1><?php echo __('Coche List', array(), 'messages') ?></h1> <?php include_partial('coche/flashes') ?> <div id="sf_admin_header"> <?php include_partial('coche/list_header', array('pager' => $pager)) ?> </div> <div id="sf_admin_bar"> <?php include_partial('coche/filters', array('form' => $filters, 'configuration' => $configuration)) ?> </div> <div id="sf_admin_content"> <form action="<?php echo url_for('coche_coche_collection', array('action' => 'batch')) ?>" method="post"> <?php include_partial('coche/list', array('pager' => $pager, 'sort' => $sort, 'helper' => $helper)) ?> <ul class="sf_admin_actions"> <?php include_partial('coche/list_batch_actions', array('helper' => $helper)) ?> <?php include_partial('coche/list_actions', array('helper' => $helper)) ?> </ul> </form> </div> <div id="sf_admin_footer"> <?php include_partial('coche/list_footer', array('pager' => $pager)) ?> </div> </div> In the template there is this line: include_partial('coche/filters', array('form' => $filters, 'configuration' => $configuration)) ?> but i can not find the variables $this-filters and $this-configuration in the index action. How is that possible? Javi

  • New to web development - backend questions

    - by James
I'm new to web development although I'm confident in the roadmap for the front-end. I need direction on two things: Basic architecture Back-end technologies For architecture, what do I need to get started? From what I know, its: Get a domain name registered (godaddy?) Find a web host ??? anything else? or start developing the site? I don't think its that easy, there must be something I'm missing, right? For the back-end technologies, I have application development experience with Java and Python, but how likely is it to find a back-end hosting site that supports these languages over PHP? Is PHP a better choice? If I stick with what I know for the back-end, am I sabotaging myself later on? If I need help, how is the market for a python/java developer vs. a php developer? What do I need to know about databases? I have some basic SQL experience. Do hosting sites have limitations on the type of databases or bandwidth I need to worry about? I'm working through some of the common sites: StackOverflow, Sitepoint forums, Google, etc...are there other resources I should use?

  • Connecting C++ backend to Javascript

    - by baseballtank13
I was hoping to make a website that displays a google map with points based of information returned by a C++ function. I know you can use Java Server Pages to call java methods on the server with javascript. Would there be a way to connect C++ code on the server with javascript in order to produce the same result as java server pages?

  • HAProxy reqrep remove URI on backend request

    - by Jim
real quick question regarding HAProxy reqrep. I am trying to rewrite/replace the request that gets sent to the backend. I have the following example domain and URIs http://domain/web1 http://domain/web2 I want web1 to go to backend webfarm1, and web2 to go to webfarm2. Currently this does happen. However I want to strip off the web1 or web2 URI when the request is sent to the backend. Here is my haproxy.cfg frontend webVIP_80 mode http bind :80 #acl routing to backend acl web1_path path_beg /web1 acl web2_path path_beg /web2 #which backend use_backend webfarm1 if web1_path use_backend webfarm2 if web2_path default_backend webfarm1 backend webfarm1 mode http reqrep ^([^\ ]*)\ /web1/(.*) \1\ /\2 balance roundrobin option httpchk HEAD /index HTTP/1.1\r\nHost:\ example.com server webtest1 10.0.0.10:80 weight 5 check slowstart 5000ms server webtest2 10.0.0.20:80 weight 5 check slowstart 5000ms backend webfarm2 mode http reqrep ^([^\ ]*)\ /web2/(.*) \1\ /\2 balance roundrobin option httpchk HEAD /index HTTP/1.1\r\nHost:\ example.com server webtest1-farm2 10.0.0.110:80 weight 5 check slowstart 5000ms server webtest2-farm2 10.0.0.120:80 weight 5 check slowstart 5000ms If I go to http://domain/web1 or http://domain/web2 I see it in the error logs that the request on a server in each backend that the requst is for the resource /web1 or /web2 respectively. Therefore I believe there to be something wrong with my regular expression, even though I copied and pasted it from the Documentation. http://code.google.com/p/haproxy-docs/wiki/reqrep Summary: I'm trying to route traffic based on URI, however I want to strip the URI on the backend side. Go to http://domain/web1 -- backend request of / to webfarm1 Thank you! -Jim

  • Backend devs put down by user stories

    - by Szili
I planned to slice in backend development into to the user stories vertically. But a backend guy on our team started to complain that this makes their work invisible. My answer was that at the sprint planning and review meetings we discuss backend tasks in front of stakeholders so it makes it visible, and maintaining a high quality during the project will result a slower startin pace than other teams, but we will have a stable velocity during the project. And velocity is highly visible to stakeholders. He still insist having stories like: "As a developer I need to have a domain layer so I can encapsulate business logic." How can I solve the issue before it pollutes the team? The root of the issue is that our management systematically consider backend work as invisible and call backed devs miners, or other pejorative terms.

  • Building SANE from git-source produce backend missmatch on 12.04 even if built locally

    - by deinonychusaur
It seems to me that with Ubuntu Precise Pangolin it is all but easy to do a proper install of SANE from source (git-repo). I've found other scanning issues trying to find an answer to this, where the output people posted seems to indicate they suffer the same issue (unknowingly). If I run on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 with compiled SANE source from the git I get: $ scanimage -V scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.24git; backend version 1.0.22 (I basically followed the instructions on http://ubuntuportal.com/2012/02/how-to-get-an-canon-canoscan-lide-100-scanner-to-work-in-ubuntu-11-10linux-mint-12.html since I didn't find any other information making sure that sane was not installed prior to installation.) My primary interest is the epson2-backend. In 1.0.22 it offers the wrong TPU settings for Epson V700 (TPU2-mode wasn't supported in 1.0.22, and the scanner is useless to me if I don't have the TPU2-support). Since if I ask it to enter transparency mode, it shows 1.0.22 behaviour, it implies that the epson2-backend comes from 1.0.22 and not 1.0.24 even though I just built it. If I install SANE with prefix to a local folder and run that version of scanimage it still produces the mismatch. However, on another computer where I installed a custom 1.0.22 build of SANE prior to upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, I can build and install the same SANE-git locally and have it correctly match backends: $ ./SANE/bin/scanimage -V scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.24git; backend version 1.0.24 $ scanimage -V scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.22; backend version 1.0.22 On this computer the 1.0.24 works correctly in finding TPU2 on Epson V700. So what am I missing/doing wrong? (And I want to replace 1.0.22 with 1.0.24 for the whole system, the local build was just debugging.) Any help would be much appreciated. Edit 1: Just tried compiling SANE using this instruction on Ubuntu 10.04 and it worked like a charm. However, when I upgraded to 12.04 (really would like to run 12.04), SANE was downgraded to 1.0.22. When trying the same set of instructions on 12.04 I was still out of luck -- the backend missmatch was there again (and I do have libusb-dev installed) Edit 2: I updated to Ubuntu 12.10 which now has the 1.0.23 SANE drivers. I haven't dared trying to compile from source on 12.10 since 1.0.23 is good enough for me. This is just a work-around and I would still like to know what's up with Ubuntu 12.04.

  • NginX : Route user request to backend

    - by xperator
The goal is to have NginX webserver act as a very basic & simple load balancer/fail-over. But instead of fetching static files from backend and serving it to user, I just want to route/redirect user request to one of the back end servers. upstream backend { server server1.example.com:80; server server2.example.com:80; server server3.example.com:80; } location / { proxy_pass http://backend; } Instead of : User request (example.com/test.file) NginX LB Backend NginX LB User I want to have : User request (example.com/test.file) NginX LB Backend User Is this even possible with NginX ? If not then How can I achieve this goal. UPDATE 1: Is there a way to use rewrite directive with backend upstream ? UPDATE 2: It's not really necessary to use NginX. I just want to have a direct reply from backend to user.

  • lighttpd: Backend is overloaded + fcgi-server re-enabled + all handlers are down

    - by AbuZubair
We have a standard lighttpd deployment with PHP-CGI and our error logs are flooding with the following. This is causing a huge problem because we keep returning 500's to our clients: 2012-10-14 14:28:38: (mod_fastcgi.c.3001) backend is overloaded; we'll disable it for 1 seconds and send the request to another backend instead: reconnects: 0 load: 36 2012-10-14 14:28:38: (mod_fastcgi.c.2764) fcgi-server re-enabled: 0 /tmp/php-7735.socket 2012-10-14 14:28:39: (mod_fastcgi.c.2764) fcgi-server re-enabled: 0 /tmp/php-7735.socket 2012-10-14 14:28:40: (mod_fastcgi.c.3001) backend is overloaded; we'll disable it for 1 seconds and send the request to another backend instead: reconnects: 0 load: 37 2012-10-14 14:28:40: (mod_fastcgi.c.2764) fcgi-server re-enabled: 0 /tmp/php-7735.socket 2012-10-14 14:28:41: (mod_fastcgi.c.3001) backend is overloaded; we'll disable it for 1 seconds and send the request to another backend instead: reconnects: 0 load: 57 2012-10-14 14:28:41: (mod_fastcgi.c.3001) backend is overloaded; we'll disable it for 1 seconds and send the request to another backend instead: reconnects: 0 load: 57 2012-10-14 14:28:42: (mod_fastcgi.c.3597) all handlers for /index.php? on .php are down. Does anyone have any clue as to what is going on? We restarted all php and lighttpd related processes and that didn't fix the problem. We ended up rebooting the whole box and now its gone away, although we fear it may come back later.... In general our deployment has been doing fine for a long time and this is the first time this has happened.

  • Windows Azure: Major Updates for Mobile Backend Development

    - by ScottGu
This week we released some great updates to Windows Azure that make it significantly easier to develop mobile applications that use the cloud. These new capabilities include: Mobile Services: Custom API support Mobile Services: Git Source Control support Mobile Services: Node.js NPM Module support Mobile Services: A .NET API via NuGet Mobile Services and Web Sites: Free 20MB SQL Database Option for Mobile Services and Web Sites Mobile Notification Hubs: Android Broadcast Push Notification Support All of these improvements are now available to use immediately (note: some are still in preview).  Below are more details about them. Mobile Services: Custom APIs, Git Source Control, and NuGet Windows Azure Mobile Services provides the ability to easily stand up a mobile backend that can be used to support your Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS, Android and HTML5 client applications.  Starting with the first preview we supported the ability to easily extend your data backend logic with server side scripting that executes as part of client-side CRUD operations against your cloud back data tables. With today’s update we are extending this support even further and introducing the ability for you to also create and expose Custom APIs from your Mobile Service backend, and easily publish them to your Mobile clients without having to associate them with a data table. This capability enables a whole set of new scenarios – including the ability to work with data sources other than SQL Databases (for example: Table Services or MongoDB), broker calls to 3rd party APIs, integrate with Windows Azure Queues or Service Bus, work with custom non-JSON payloads (e.g. Windows Periodic Notifications), route client requests to services back on-premises (e.g. with the new Windows Azure BizTalk Services), or simply implement functionality that doesn’t correspond to a database operation.  The custom APIs can be written in server-side JavaScript (using Node.js) and can use Node’s NPM packages.  We will also be adding support for custom APIs written using .NET in the future as well. Creating a Custom API Adding a custom API to an existing Mobile Service is super easy.  Using the Windows Azure Management Portal you can now simply click the new “API” tab with your Mobile Service, and then click the “Create a Custom API” button to create a new Custom API within it: Give the API whatever name you want to expose, and then choose the security permissions you’d like to apply to the HTTP methods you expose within it.  You can easily lock down the HTTP verbs to your Custom API to be available to anyone, only those who have a valid application key, only authenticated users, or administrators.  Mobile Services will then enforce these permissions without you having to write any code: When you click the ok button you’ll see the new API show up in the API list.  Selecting it will enable you to edit the default script that contains some placeholder functionality: Today’s release enables Custom APIs to be written using Node.js (we will support writing Custom APIs in .NET as well in a future release), and the Custom API programming model follows the Node.js convention for modules, which is to export functions to handle HTTP requests. The default script above exposes functionality for an HTTP POST request. To support a GET, simply change the export statement accordingly.  Below is an example of some code for reading and returning data from Windows Azure Table Storage using the Azure Node API: After saving the changes, you can now call this API from any Mobile Service client application (including Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS, Android or HTML5 with CORS). Below is the code for how you could invoke the API asynchronously from a Windows Store application using .NET and the new InvokeApiAsync method, and data-bind the results to control within your XAML:     private async void RefreshTodoItems() {         var results = await App.MobileService.InvokeApiAsync<List<TodoItem>>("todos", HttpMethod.Get, parameters: null);         ListItems.ItemsSource = new ObservableCollection<TodoItem>(results);     }    Integrating authentication and authorization with Custom APIs is really easy with Mobile Services. Just like with data requests, custom API requests enjoy the same built-in authentication and authorization support of Mobile Services (including integration with Microsoft ID, Google, Facebook and Twitter authentication providers), and it also enables you to easily integrate your Custom API code with other Mobile Service capabilities like push notifications, logging, SQL, etc. Check out our new tutorials to learn more about to use new Custom API support, and starting adding them to your app today. Mobile Services: Git Source Control Support Today’s Mobile Services update also enables source control integration with Git.  The new source control support provides a Git repository as part your Mobile Service, and it includes all of your existing Mobile Service scripts and permissions. You can clone that git repository on your local machine, make changes to any of your scripts, and then easily deploy the mobile service to production using Git. This enables a really great developer workflow that works on any developer machine (Windows, Mac and Linux). To use the new support, navigate to the dashboard for your mobile service and select the Set up source control link: If this is your first time enabling Git within Windows Azure, you will be prompted to enter the credentials you want to use to access the repository: Once you configure this, you can switch to the configure tab of your Mobile Service and you will see a Git URL you can use to use your repository: You can use this URL to clone the repository locally from your favorite command line: > git clone https://scottgutodo.scm.azure-mobile.net/ScottGuToDo.git Below is the directory structure of the repository: As you can see, the repository contains a service folder with several subfolders. Custom API scripts and associated permissions appear under the api folder as .js and .json files respectively (the .json files persist a JSON representation of the security settings for your endpoints). Similarly, table scripts and table permissions appear as .js and .json files, but since table scripts are separate per CRUD operation, they follow the naming convention of <tablename>.<operationname>.js. Finally, scheduled job scripts appear in the scheduler folder, and the shared folder is provided as a convenient location for you to store code shared by multiple scripts and a few miscellaneous things such as the APNS feedback script. Lets modify the table script todos.js file so that we have slightly better error handling when an exception occurs when we query our Table service: todos.js tableService.queryEntities(query, function(error, todoItems){     if (error) {         console.error("Error querying table: " + error);         response.send(500);     } else {         response.send(200, todoItems);     }        }); Save these changes, and now back in the command line prompt commit the changes and push them to the Mobile Services: > git add . > git commit –m "better error handling in todos.js" > git push Once deployment of the changes is complete, they will take effect immediately, and you will also see the changes be reflected in the portal: With the new Source Control feature, we’re making it really easy for you to edit your mobile service locally and push changes in an atomic fashion without sacrificing ease of use in the Windows Azure Portal. Mobile Services: NPM Module Support The new Mobile Services source control support also allows you to add any Node.js module you need in the scripts beyond the fixed set provided by Mobile Services. For example, you can easily switch to use Mongo instead of Windows Azure table in our example above. Set up Mongo DB by either purchasing a MongoLab subscription (which provides MongoDB as a Service) via the Windows Azure Store or set it up yourself on a Virtual Machine (either Windows or Linux). Then go the service folder of your local git repository and run the following command: > npm install mongoose This will add the Mongoose module to your Mobile Service scripts.  After that you can use and reference the Mongoose module in your custom API scripts to access your Mongo database: var mongoose = require('mongoose'); var schema = mongoose.Schema({ text: String, completed: Boolean });   exports.get = function (request, response) {     mongoose.connect('<your Mongo connection string> ');     TodoItemModel = mongoose.model('todoitem', schema);     TodoItemModel.find(function (err, items) {         if (err) {             console.log('error:' + err);             return response.send(500);         }         response.send(200, items);     }); }; Don’t forget to push your changes to your mobile service once you are done > git add . > git commit –m "Switched to use Mongo Labs" > git push Now our Mobile Service app is using Mongo DB! Note, with today’s update usage of custom Node.js modules is limited to Custom API scripts only. We will enable it in all scripts (including data and custom CRON tasks) shortly. New Mobile Services NuGet package, including .NET 4.5 support A few months ago we announced a new pre-release version of the Mobile Services client SDK based on portable class libraries (PCL). Today, we are excited to announce that this new library is now a stable .NET client SDK for mobile services and is no longer a pre-release package. Today’s update includes full support for Windows Store, Windows Phone 7.x, and .NET 4.5, which allows developers to use Mobile Services from ASP.NET or WPF applications. You can install and use this package today via NuGet. Mobile Services and Web Sites: Free 20MB Database for Mobile Services and Web Sites Starting today, every customer of Windows Azure gets one Free 20MB database to use for 12 months free (for both dev/test and production) with Web Sites and Mobile Services. When creating a Mobile Service or a Web Site, simply chose the new “Create a new Free 20MB database” option to take advantage of it: You can use this free SQL Database together with the 10 free Web Sites and 10 free Mobile Services you get with your Windows Azure subscription, or from any other Windows Azure VM or Cloud Service. Notification Hubs: Android Broadcast Push Notification Support Earlier this year, we introduced a new capability in Windows Azure for sending broadcast push notifications at high scale: Notification Hubs. In the initial preview of Notification Hubs you could use this support with both iOS and Windows devices.  Today we’re excited to announce new Notification Hubs support for sending push notifications to Android devices as well. Push notifications are a vital component of mobile applications.  They are critical not only in consumer apps, where they are used to increase app engagement and usage, but also in enterprise apps where up-to-date information increases employee responsiveness to business events.  You can use Notification Hubs to send push notifications to devices from any type of app (a Mobile Service, Web Site, Cloud Service or Virtual Machine). Notification Hubs provide you with the following capabilities: Cross-platform Push Notifications Support. Notification Hubs provide a common API to send push notifications to iOS, Android, or Windows Store at once.  Your app can send notifications in platform specific formats or in a platform-independent way.  Efficient Multicast. Notification Hubs are optimized to enable push notification broadcast to thousands or millions of devices with low latency.  Your server back-end can fire one message into a Notification Hub, and millions of push notifications can automatically be delivered to your users.  Devices and apps can specify a number of per-user tags when registering with a Notification Hub. These tags do not need to be pre-provisioned or disposed, and provide a very easy way to send filtered notifications to an infinite number of users/devices with a single API call.   Extreme Scale. Notification Hubs enable you to reach millions of devices without you having to re-architect or shard your application.  The pub/sub routing mechanism allows you to broadcast notifications in a super-efficient way.  This makes it incredibly easy to route and deliver notification messages to millions of users without having to build your own routing infrastructure. Usable from any Backend App. Notification Hubs can be easily integrated into any back-end server app, whether it is a Mobile Service, a Web Site, a Cloud Service or an IAAS VM. It is easy to configure Notification Hubs to send push notifications to Android. Create a new Notification Hub within the Windows Azure Management Portal (New->App Services->Service Bus->Notification Hub): Then register for Google Cloud Messaging using https://code.google.com/apis/console and obtain your API key, then simply paste that key on the Configure tab of your Notification Hub management page under the Google Cloud Messaging Settings: Then just add code to the OnCreate method of your Android app’s MainActivity class to register the device with Notification Hubs: gcm = GoogleCloudMessaging.getInstance(this); String connectionString = "<your listen access connection string>"; hub = new NotificationHub("<your notification hub name>", connectionString, this); String regid = gcm.register(SENDER_ID); hub.register(regid, "myTag"); Now you can broadcast notification from your .NET backend (or Node, Java, or PHP) to any Windows Store, Android, or iOS device registered for “myTag” tag via a single API call (you can literally broadcast messages to millions of clients you have registered with just one API call): var hubClient = NotificationHubClient.CreateClientFromConnectionString(                   “<your connection string with full access>”,                   "<your notification hub name>"); hubClient.SendGcmNativeNotification("{ 'data' : {'msg' : 'Hello from Windows Azure!' } }", "myTag”); Notification Hubs provide an extremely scalable, cross-platform, push notification infrastructure that enables you to efficiently route push notification messages to millions of mobile users and devices.  It will make enabling your push notification logic significantly simpler and more scalable, and allow you to build even better apps with it. Learn more about Notification Hubs here on MSDN . Summary The above features are now live and available to start using immediately (note: some of the services are still in preview).  If you don’t already have a Windows Azure account, you can sign-up for a free trial and start using them today.  Visit the Windows Azure Developer Center to learn more about how to build apps with it. • Duplication of code (backend and javascript - knockout)

    - by Michal B.
We have a new developer in our team. He seems a smart guy (he just came in so I cannot really judge). He started with implementing some small enhancements in the project (MVC3 web application using javascript - jquery and knockout). Let's say we have two values: A - quite complex calculation C - constant B = A + C On the screen there is value B and user can change it (normal texbox). When B changes, A changes as well because C is constant. So there is linear dependency between A and B. Now, all the calculations are done in the backend, but we need to recalculate A as user changes B (in js, I would use knockout). I thought about storing old A and B and when B changes by 10 then we know that new A will be old A + 10. He says this is dirty, because it's duplication of code (we make use of the fact that they are dependent and according to him that should be only in one place in our app). I understand it's not ideal, but making AJAX request after every key press seems a bit too much. It's a really small thing and I would not post if we haven't had long discussion about it. How do you deal with such problems? Also I can imagine that using knockout implies lots of calculations on the client side, which very often leads to duplication of the same calculations from the backend. Does anyone have links to some articles/thoughts on this topic?

  • Gnome Mplayer failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so

    - by Tim
When I open an avi file under Gnome Mplayer, there is an error report: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I then followed this blog to solve this problem, which suggests two ways. The first way is to call mplayer in terminal: mplayer -vo xv video.wmv This works for me. But I would like to try the second way, which is to write options in one of the configure files of Gnome Mplayer. I choose to write into ~/.mplayer/config, where I wrote: -vo xv But it does not work. So I was wondering if I make any mistake? What to write into the configure file? Thanks and regards!

  • Printer State: Idle - /usr/lib/cups/backend/dnssd failed

    - by bilbo88
A printer was installed and worked but does not now. A job is successfully submitted, but keeps waiting there for printing (as seen from lpq command). Ping to printer works fine. (The printer is on and works as it prints from Windows.) But on the Printer Property, it shows Printer State: Idle - /usr/lib/cups/backend/dnssd failed. The following command does not help either. sudo service avahi-daemon restart Does any one has a solution? Thank you for help.

  • Joomla Backend running slow on localhost

    - by boothe
I made a local backup of a Joomla site a few months ago to test changes before updating the live site. Everything worked fine. Today I checked the local version after a while but when I open the backend (/administrator) it takes a while until the site is loaded. I tried out different things and accidently disconnected my Network Connection. After that everything loads as fast as before. But when I connect the Network Connection the problem reappears. I am running Joomla 1.5.14 on XAMPP 1.7.0.
