  • Java RMI InitialContext: Equivalent of LocateRegistry.createRegistry(int) ?

    - by bguiz
I am trying to some pretty basic RMI: // Context namingContext = new InitialContext(); Registry reg = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(9999); for ( int i = 0; i < objs.length; i++ ) { int id = objs[i].getID(); // namingContext.bind( "rmi:CustomObj" + id , objs[i] ); reg.bind( "CustomObj" + id , objs[i] ); } That works without a hitch, but for future purposes, I need to use InitialContext. Context namingContext = new InitialContext(); for ( int i = 0; i < objs.length; i++ ) { int id = objs[i].getID(); namingContext.bind( "rmi:CustomObj" + id , objs[i] ); } But I cannot get this to work. I have started rmiregistry from the command line. Is there an equivalent of LocateRegistry.createRegistry(int)? Or some other way to start the RMI registry / registry used by InitialContext from inside my class? (Instead of the command line) Stack trace: javax.naming.CommunicationException [Root exception is java.rmi.ServerException: RemoteException occurred in server thread; nested exception is: java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling arguments; nested exception is: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: bguiz.scratch.network.eg.Student] at com.sun.jndi.rmi.registry.RegistryContext.bind(RegistryContext.java:126) at com.sun.jndi.toolkit.url.GenericURLContext.bind(GenericURLContext.java:208) at javax.naming.InitialContext.bind(InitialContext.java:400) at bguiz.scratch.RMITest.main(RMITest.java:29) Caused by: java.rmi.ServerException: RemoteException occurred in server thread; nested exception is: java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling arguments; nested exception is: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: bguiz.scratch.CustomObj at sun.rmi.server.UnicastServerRef.oldDispatch(UnicastServerRef.java:396) at sun.rmi.server.UnicastServerRef.dispatch(UnicastServerRef.java:250) ....(truncated) EDIT: I will delete my own question in a couple of days, as there seems to be no answer to this (I haven't been able to figure it out myself). Last call for any biters!

  • Hardware selection for Linux machine

    - by bguiz
Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since. One notable difference is that I can no longer find motherboards with nVidia chip sets. See what I mean (links to my local shop's website): Intel motherboards: http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/default.php?page=1&cPath=36_62 AMD motherboards: http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/default.php?page=1&cPath=36_63 I have already checked the Ubuntu forums, but their motherboards section is rather outdated, and I did not look further. I would like to know your suggestions for what Linux compatible hardware that you have got. Thank you!

  • Unix : `nc` on Ubuntu vs Redhat (netcat)

    - by bguiz
How do I achieve the equivalent of nc -q in Redhat 5? Details? nc -q -1 local host ${PORT} ${CMD} In Ubuntu, nc may be use as above, with the -q option. See manpage. -q after EOF on stdin, wait the specified number of seconds and then quit. If seconds is negative, wait forever. However, this option is not available in Redhat 5. See manpage. (Note: The Red Hat website is horrible to search, if someone finds their manpage for nc, please edit this post or comment with the new link).

  • Unix commandline to repeat command with pipes

    - by bguiz
I want to write a script that will repeat a commandline that usually contains pipes ./myscript.sh ls -lart |grep ^d And in myscript.sh I do a bunch of stuff, and then want to execute ls -lart |grep ^d and pipe the output from that into something else. (sorry in advance if this is really simple and has a 1-liner solution). So far I have tried [email protected] | someothercommand and $* | someothercommand But to no avail...

Hi, I want to blog on a Wordpress account, without having to upload pictures manually. I'm looking for a program that allows you to edit text + simple formatting + pictures, and lets you publish it to your blog in one step, taking care of uploading both the text and the pictures. Does anyone know of such a program? Thanks.

  • Pause/play AJAX on particular tabs in firefox

    - by bguiz
Hi, I want to know if there is some method to disable AJAX on particular tabs within Firefox and re-enable them later. My concern is that I have metered bandwidth, and I need to conserve my usage. But I also like to leave several Gmail tabs open in the background. It would be great if I could just hit a "Pause AJAX" button, to stop the contents of that tab from sending or receiving anything, and then later on hit a "Play" button when I want it to start doing its thing again. Any suggestions?

  • How to prove that an email has been sent?

    - by bguiz
I have a dispute on my hands in which the other party (landlord's real estate agent) dishonestly claims to not have received an email that I truly did send. My questions is, what are the ways to prove that the email was indeed sent? Thus far, the methods that I have already thought of are: Screenshot of the mail in the outbox Forwarding a copy of the original email I am aware of other things like HTTP/ SMTP headers etc that would exist as well. Are these useful for my purposes, and if so how do I extract these? The email in question was sent using Yahoo webmail ( http://au.mail.yahoo.com/ ). Edit: I am not seeking legal advice here, just technical advice as to how to gather this information.

  • Web clipping / note taking software on Linux

    - by bguiz
Hi, I use this great web-clipping and note taking app called Evernote on my Windows machine. However, there's no Linux version of Evernote (doesn't work properly in Wine). I would like to get some suggestions for something with similar capabilities that runs on Linux/Ubuntu. Specifically I need to be able to select parts of a web page in Firefox, and press some key combination, to save that clip to disk, in some sort of searchable database The clip needs to have pictures and basic text formatting, anything extra is unnecessary I also need to be able to create empty note or edit existing one. Storing the notes on a local machine only is fine - I don't need the sync features of Evernote

  • Ubuntu Karmic - Net connection unusually laggy

    - by bguiz
Hi, I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and fired up Firefox, what I have noticed is that the Internet is slower than it is with the other machines that I have with identical connection. In particular, it takes it a long time for it to look up a server. Once downloading has begun, the speeds are normal, but it is very very laggy prior to starting the download: Firefox's status bar reports Looking up <server>... for up to 15 seconds, where it would usually just flicker for a fraction of a second. Any ideas on what could be causing this and suggested fixes? Thanks!

  • linux: selective sudo access for a particular command

    - by bguiz
Hi, Is it possible to grant a particular user sudo access for one particular command only? Thanks -- More info: We farm out lengthy optimisation runs to each other's boxes over ssh. These runs take hours, sometimes days. The shutdown command can only be run in sudo. Being conscious of my environmental footprint, I would like to give the initiator(s) of these runs sudo access to the shutdown command on my box, without sudo access for everything else - so that they may shutdown my machine when they no longer need it. I am aware that I can schedule a shutdown before I leave my box, but I am looking for a better solution.

  • Java: JPQL date function to add a time period to another date

    - by bguiz
SELECT x FROM SomeClass WHERE x.dateAtt BETWEEN CURRENT_DATE AND (CURRENT_DATE + 1 MONTH) In the above JPQL statement, SomeClass has a memebr dateAttr, which is a java.util.Date and has a @Temporal(javax.persistence.TemporalType.DATE) annotation. I need a way to do the (CURRENT_DATE + 1 MONTH) bit - it is obviously wrong in its current state - but cannot find the doc with the date function for JPQL. Can anyone point me in the direction of a doc that documents JPQL date functions (and also how to do this particular query)?

  • Installer for java application

    - by bguiz
Hi, I would like to know what packages are out there that can be used to create installers to distribute applications. The target application is written in Java. The installer must be able to: be compiled via an ant script be compiled Linux (and Windows) run on Windows and Linux detect / handle previously installed versions of the application We currently use IzPack, because it does all of the above, except the latter: It cannot easily detect previously installed version of the software. Are there any other packages out there which fit the bill? Thank you!

  • Documenting applications - automation / semi-automation for screenshots?

    - by bguiz
For me one of the biggest bores of being a developer is writing user documentation. (I am referring to the stuff that gets exported into PDF files files that ship with the product, not comments in code here). The task off adding or updating new bits of text to the existing documentation is OK. However having to take screenshots of select screens can be quite a tedious process. Is there a way to automate or even semi-automate the process of taking screenshots? The main requirement is the ability to crop images such that they contain only the window, including window manager areas (such as the title bar). The secondary requirement is that any format is OK, so long as it can be exported to PDF. EDIT: Any more biters?

  • Suggestions for displaying code on webpages, MUST use <br> for newline

    - by bguiz
Hi, I want to post code snippets online (wordpress.com blog) - and have its whitespace formatted nicely. See the answers suggested by this other SO question: Those would be OK, except that I like to copy code to clip board or clip entire pages using Evernote - and they use either the <pre> tag or <table> (or both) to format the code. So I end up with text whose newlines and white spaces ignored, e.g. string url = "<a href=\"" + someObj.getUrl() + "\" target=\"_blank\">"; // single line comments // second single line override protected void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { if(Attributes["class"]&nbsp;!= null) { //_year.CssClass = _month.CssClass = _day.CssClass = Attributes["class"]; } base.OnLoad(e); } Which I find rather annoying myself. I find that if the code was formatted using <br> tags, they copy/ clip porperly, e.g. string url = "<a href=\"" + someObj.getUrl() + "\" target=\"_blank\">"; // single line comments // second single line override protected void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { if(Attributes["class"]&nbsp;!= null) { //_year.CssClass = _month.CssClass = _day.CssClass = Attributes["class"]; } base.OnLoad(e); } I find this annoying myself, so I don't want to inflict it upon others when I post my own code. Please suggest methods of posting code snippets online that are able to do this. I would like to emphasise that syntax highlighting capability is secondary to correct white space markup. Thank you

  • Izpack: Creating custom panels

    - by bguiz
Hi, I am trying to create a custom panel for an IzPack installer. This means that I have to extend IzPanel. However, it appears that if I do this, the extended panel needs to be in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. Then I found this post, which stipulates that: As such, you must include installer.jar from the lib folder of IzPack in the build path of your custom panel project. Your custom panel /must/ extend com.izforge.izpack.installer.IzPanel. Furthermore, it /must/ reside in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. On top of it all, your build jar's name /must/ be the same as the unqualified name of your custom panel class. I take issue with the 1st and 4th points. They imply that I have to create an additional JAR file for each custom IzPanel that I create. Also, I would have to modify the IzPack installation by adding these JARs to one of its subdirectories. Is this article outdated (2008) and can it be safely ignored, or is this still true? If not how can I avoid this and simply have the extended IzPanel on the classpath instead? Thank you!

  • Can I avoid explicit 'self'?

    - by bguiz
I am fairly new to Python and trying to pick it up, so please forgive if this question has a very obvious answer! I have been learning Python by following some pygame tutorials. Therein I found extensive use of the keyword self, and coming from a primarily Java background, I find that I keep forgetting to type self. For example, instead of self.rect.centerx I would type rect.centerx, because, to me, rect is already a member variable of the class. The Java parallel I can think of for this situation is having to prefix all references to member variables with this. Am I stuck prefixing all member variables with self, or is there a way to declare them that would allow me to avoid having to do so? Even if what I am suggesting isn't "pythonic", I'd still like to know if it is possible. I have taken a look at these related SO questions, but they don't quite answer what I am after: Python - why use “self” in a class? Why do you need explicitly have the “self” argument into a Python method?

  • ant task to remove files from a jar

    - by bguiz
Hi, How to write an ant task that removes files from a previously compiled JAR? Let's say the files in my JAR are: aaa/bbb/ccc/Class1 aaa/bbb/ccc/Class2 aaa/bbb/def/Class3 aaa/bbb/def/Class4 ... and I want a version of this JAR file without the aaa.bbb.def package, and I need to strip it out using ant, such that I end up with a JAR that contains: aaa/bbb/ccc/Class1 aaa/bbb/ccc/Class2 Thanks!

  • Java: What are the various available security settings for applets

    - by bguiz
I have an applet that throws this exception when trying to communicate with the server (running on localhost). This problem is limited to Applets only - a POJO client is able to communicate with the exact same server without any problem. Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-1" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net .SocketPermission 127.0.0.1:9999 connect, resolve) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(AccessControlContext.java:323) My applet.policy file's contents is: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; My question is what are the other places where I need to modify my security settings to grant an Applet more security settings? Thank you. EDIT: Further investigation has lead me to find that this problem only occurs on some machines - but not others. So it could be a machine level (global) setting that is causing this, rather than a application-specific setting such as the one in the applet.policy file. EDIT: Another SO question: Socket connection to originating server of an unsigned Java applet This seems to describe the exact same problem, and Tom Hawtin - tackline 's answer provides the reason why (a security patch released that disallows applets from connecting to localhost). Bearing this in mind, how do I grant the applet the security settings such that in can indeed run on my machine. Also why does it run as-is on other machines but not mine?

  • JFormattedTextField : input time duration value

    - by bguiz
I want to use a JFormattedTextField to allow the user to input time duration values into a form. Sample valid values are: 2h 30m 72h 15m 6h 0h However I am having limited success with this. Can some one please suggest how this can be accomplished? I am OK if this result can be achieved using a JTextField as well. Thanks! If it is worth anything, here's my current attempt: mFormattedText.setFormatterFactory( new DefaultFormatterFactory( new DateFormatter( new SimpleDateFormat("H mm")))); This sorta works except that: I cannot get h and m to appear as plain text (I tried escaping) * The number of hours has a max *: See @nanda's answer
