  • Preoder traversal of a Btree

    I'm trying to figure out how to do a preorder traversal of a Btree. I know that generally preorder traversal works like this: preorder(node) { print value in node preorder(left child) preorder(right child) } What's confusing to me is how to make this work with a Btree, since in each node there are multiple values and multiple child pointers. When printing values, do all the values in the node get printed before descending into the left child? Each node looks like this: child1 value1 child2 value2 child3 value3 child4 Also, why would anyone want to do a preorder traversal of a Btree, since an inorder traversal is what will display the values in ascending order?

    I need to do a preorder traversal of a Btree, and among other things, print the following information for each page (which is the same thing as a node): The B-Tree page number The value of each B-Tree page pointer (e.g., address, byte offset, RRN). My questions are: 1. How do you figure out the byte offset? What is it offset from? 2. Isn't the RRN the same as the page number? Note: A Btree is NOT A BINARY TREE. Btrees can have multiple keys in each node, and a node with n keys has n+1 child pointers.

  • How to implement B+ Tree for file systems ?

    I have a text file which contains some info on extents about all the files in the file system, like below C:\Program Files\abcd.txt 12345 100 23456 200 C:\Program Files\bcde.txt 56789 50 26746 300 ... Now i have another binary which tries to find out about extents for all the files. Now currently i am using linear search to find extent info for the files in the above mentioned text file. This is a time consuming process. Is there a better way of coding this ? Like Implementing any good data structure like BTree. If B+ Tree is used what is the key, branch factor i need to use ?

"B-tree" concept here refers to a "tree of storage units" that hold the contents of an individual directory. What I don't understand is where on the disk is this tree stored? Its surely not created every-time we reboot...that would take lots of time. and since its a tree(dynamic Data structure) unlike arrays it will grow. so space needs to be allocated every-time it grows. so how is this "dynamic meta-data" stored ?

I studied them some years ago, and to be honest, I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so I'm looking for a simple implementation in C of b+tree that I can just include in my project. I know of sqlite's, dbm's and tokyocabinet's ones but they're a little too "complicated" for my needs. Is there any (even pedagogical) work on this you can refer me to?     Let's say that there is a file that contains an unsorted list of student information, which includes a student ID number as well as other information. I want to make a program that retrieves student information based on student ID number. In order to make it efficient, I store the student IDs in a B-tree. So when I enter a student ID number, it searches the B-tree to see if its there or not. It also does one more thing. If it finds the student ID number, then it also returns where in the file that student's information is. This is the secondary key. The program uses this information to locate the rest of the student's information and prints it to screen. Can this be done? Is this how a b-tree works?

    No obvious problems with my Mac OS X 10.5 system, but Drive Genius 1.5.1 says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" when doing a "Verify" The "repair" and "rebuild" options fail. I did some googling, and the consensus as: 1- Drive Genius is slightly better than Disk Warrior 2- This problem is likely not fixable. My assumed solution is that I should do a full backup and re-format.

    I noticed that there are two ways to create C++ objects: BTree *btree = new BTree; and BTree btree; From what I can tell, the only difference is in how class objects are accessed (. vs. - operator), and when the first way is used, private integers get initialized to 0. Which way is better, and what's the difference? How do you know when to use one or the other?

  • Berkeley DB: btree prefix comparison for directory-like keys?

    I'm going to index a BDB with keys that look a lot like directory paths ('/foo/bar', '/foo/baz', etc, with levels of slashes generally < 10). Does anybody have any experience with using a Btree prefix comparison routine[1] for this? Are the savings worthwhile? Any references to experience papers on this subject?
