  I'm working on a background service which needs to ask several users' iTunes settings (the users will opt-in via a helper application which they run from their login). Is there an easy way to read the preferences for another user, than the current one, using CFPreferences? The docs, for example for CFPreferencesCopyValue, explicitly state: 'Do not use arbitrary user and host names, instead pass the pre-defined domain qualifier constants.', when passing the 'userName' argument to the various functions.

  I have only a little question: Why the CFPreferences-API creates multiple files in my UserPrefs-Directory? All the files have my Bundle-Identifier as name and all (except the one, the original) have added a suffix like this: com.myComp.myApp.plist <- (only this plist-file should be created) com.myComp.myApp.plist.0qzcicc com.myComp.myApp.plist.8dhjfht

• Preferred place to store username

  I am dealing with a single username and password in an App, I'm storing the password in the keychain for security but where best to store the username? In NSUserDefaults, CFPreferences or is there a way to retrieve it out of the keychain along with the password. Later on there might be two entries in the keychain so I think this might be out of the question. Or does it not matter at all?

• Mac won't boot into safe mode

  Mac boots fine normally, except when in safe mode. Holding down shift when booting gets me to the progress bar on the grey screen. Progress bar gets about half way before mac reboots. I modified nvram boot-args to get a better look: sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v" It definitely gets through fsck, skips loading kernel extensions (since it's in safe mode), does something with the network interfaces, then this is the last thing it wips through... • Mac OS X roaming profile from Samba with OpenLDAP backend on Ubuntu 11.10

  I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server.
