  • SQL Down Under Show 51 - Guest Conor Cunningham - Now online

    - by Greg Low
Late last night I got to record an interview with Conor Cunningham. Most people that know Conor have come across him as the product team wizard that knows so much about query processing and optimization in SQL Server. Conor is currently spending quite a lot of time working on Windows Azure SQL Database, which we used to know as SQL Azure. I'm still trying to think of a good way to say "WASD". I suppose I'll pronounce it like "wassid". Windows Azure SQL Reporting is easier. I think it just needs to be pronounced like "wazza" with a very Australian accent. In the show, we've spent time on the current state of the platform, on dispelling a number of common misbeliefs about the product, and hopefully on answering most of the common questions that seem to get asked about it. We then ventured into Federations, Data Sync, and Reporting. You'll find the show (and previous shows) here: http://www.sqldownunder.com/Resources/Podcast.aspxEnjoy!PS: For those that like transcripts, we've got the process for producing them much improved now and the transcript should also be up within a few days.

  • SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

    - by Conor H
Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

  • Networking Multiplayer games in Cocoa?

    - by Conor Taylor
I have made this game for Mac OS, but I realised that i need to make it better with multiplayer. Im an experienced Cocoa developer (so please, no RTFM's) but for some reason I never even touched on networking. I was wondering how I could send game date from com1 to com2, and vice versa, over different wifi networks. Cheers, Conor Edit: When I say different wifi networks, I mean no bonjour. I want to be able to play the game in the US with a guy in china!

  • How to design html timetable

    - by Conor H
Hi There, I'm currently working on a project where I need to print out a lesson timetable. Here is a link to the one I have created http://conorhackett.com/tt/. It works fine now but i'd like to have more control over it. If you look at the code you'll see what I mean. The html/css is very messy. I've tried to do it with a html table but it didn't look great with all the lines. Is there any foundations available to me that I could use as a base.? Any adive greatly appreciated :) --Conor

  • CARP: two machines think they're the master, but only on one interface

    - by Conor McDermottroe
    I have two machines, each configured identically as a firewall/load balancer for a busy website. I have set them up with CARP and pfsync on both the internal and external interfaces. The internal interface is behaving as expected (primary listed as MASTER and secondary listed as BACKUP) On both machines, the network interfaces are as follows: em0 - External interface bge0 - Internal interface bge1 - Crossover connection between both machines carp0 - Shared external interface for CARP carp1 - Shared internal interface for CARP I've rewritten the IP addresses and MAC addresses below. The networks are as follows: 10.0.1.0/24 - External network 10.0.2.0/24 - Internal network 10.0.3.0/24 - Crossover network Here's the output from ifconfig on the primary: em0: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=19b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM,TSO4> ether [SNIP] inet 10.0.1.10 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.1.255 media: Ethernet 100baseTX <full-duplex> status: active bge0: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=9b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM> ether [SNIP] inet 10.0.2.10 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.2.255 media: Ethernet 1000baseT <full-duplex> status: active bge1: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=9b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM> ether [SNIP] inet 10.0.3.10 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.3.255 media: Ethernet 1000baseT <full-duplex> status: active lo0: flags=80c9<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,NOARP,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 16384 options=3<RXCSUM,TXCSUM> inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 pflog0: flags=141<UP,RUNNING,PROMISC> metric 0 mtu 33152 pfsync0: flags=0<> metric 0 mtu 1460 pfsync: syncdev: bge1 syncpeer: 10.0.3.11 maxupd: 128 carp0: flags=49<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> metric 0 mtu 1500 inet 10.0.1.5 netmask 0xffffff00 carp: MASTER vhid 1 advbase 1 advskew 0 carp1: flags=49<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> metric 0 mtu 1500 inet 10.0.2.5 netmask 0xffffff00 carp: MASTER vhid 2 advbase 1 advskew 0 And here's the /etc/rc.conf excerpt from the primary: defaultrouter="10.0.1.1" network_interfaces="em0 bge0 bge1 lo0 pfsync0" cloned_interfaces="carp0 carp1" ifconfig_em0="inet 10.0.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 media 100BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex" ifconfig_bge0="inet 10.0.2.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 media 1000BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex" ifconfig_bge1="inet 10.0.3.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 media 1000BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex" ifconfig_carp0="vhid 1 pass [SNIP] 10.0.1.5/24" ifconfig_carp1="vhid 2 pass [SNIP] 10.0.2.5/24" pfsync_enable="YES" pfsync_syncdev="bge1" pfsync_syncpeer="10.0.3.11" And here's the output on the secondary: em0: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=19b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM,TSO4> ether [SNIP] inet 10.0.1.11 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.1.255 media: Ethernet 100baseTX <full-duplex> status: active bge0: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=9b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM> ether [SNIP] inet 10.0.2.11 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.2.255 media: Ethernet 1000baseT <full-duplex> status: active bge1: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=9b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM> ether [SNIP] inet 10.0.3.11 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.3.255 media: Ethernet 1000baseT <full-duplex> status: active lo0: flags=80c9<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,NOARP,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 16384 options=3<RXCSUM,TXCSUM> inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 pflog0: flags=141<UP,RUNNING,PROMISC> metric 0 mtu 33152 pfsync0: flags=0<> metric 0 mtu 1460 pfsync: syncdev: bge1 syncpeer: 10.0.3.10 maxupd: 128 carp0: flags=49<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> metric 0 mtu 1500 inet 10.0.1.5 netmask 0xffffff00 carp: MASTER vhid 1 advbase 1 advskew 20 carp1: flags=49<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> metric 0 mtu 1500 inet 10.0.2.5 netmask 0xffffff00 carp: BACKUP vhid 2 advbase 1 advskew 20 And here's the /etc/rc.conf excerpt from the secondary: defaultrouter="10.0.1.1" network_interfaces="em0 bge0 bge1 lo0 pfsync0" cloned_interfaces="carp0 carp1" ifconfig_em0="inet 10.0.1.11 netmask 255.255.255.0 media 100BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex" ifconfig_bge0="inet 10.0.2.11 netmask 255.255.255.0 media 1000BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex" ifconfig_bge1="inet 10.0.3.11 netmask 255.255.255.0 media 1000BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex" ifconfig_carp0="vhid 1 pass [SNIP] advskew 20 10.0.1.5/24" ifconfig_carp1="vhid 2 pass [SNIP] advskew 20 10.0.2.5/24" pfsync_enable="YES" pfsync_syncdev="bge1" pfsync_syncpeer="10.0.3.10" What I don't understand is, the carp status on carp0 is MASTER on both machines when the status on carp1 is as it should be (MASTER on the primary and BACKUP on the secondary).   • Enable MEX in a Web.Config

  • Upgrade .NET 1.1 WinForm/Service to what?

    - by Conor
Hi Folks, We have a current WinForm/Windows Service running in .NET 1.1 out on various customer sites that is getting data from internal systems, transforming it and then calling a Web Service synchronously. This client app will no longer work in Vista or Windows 7 etc.. and its time to update!! I was looking for ideas on what I could do here, I didn't write the App and I have the Business team telling me they want the world but I need to be realistic :) Things the service must be able to do: - Handle multiple formats from internal system and transform to a schema SAP, ERP etc.. - Run silently and just work on customer sites (it does currently albeit .NET 1.1) - The Customers are unable to call our web service from their sites as they are not technical enough. - Upgrade it's self when updates occur (currently don't have this capability) Is there anything I can do here other than upgrade the service to run in .NET and add a few more transformation capabilities e..g they want the customer to be able to give us a flat file, an xml file, a csv and the service transforms it and calls the Web Service? I was hoping in this day and age we could use the Web, but automating this 100% rules it out in my eyes? I could be totally wrong!! Any help would be gratefully appreciated! Cheers. Conor

  • How do you KISS ?

    - by Conor
The KISS principal is a highly quoted design mantra. The aim of this principle is to stamp out unnecessary complexity on a project. This is a good thing, saving time, energy and money. It can lead to a relatively stress free implementation and a simple, elegant, maintainable end product. A lot of discussion on KISS provides mechanisms to simplify requirements, design and implementation. Things that spring to mind include: avoid scope creep; simple obvious design and code; minimal run-time dependencies; refactoring to maintain simplicity; etc. However there are a lot of implicit things that we do to KISS. Examples: small team sizes; minimal management layers; tidy desk; mastery of a single IDE; clear concise error messages; scripts to automate/encapsulate tasks; etc The purpose of this question is to derive a checklist of KISS items. I'm especially interested in non-obvious items.

  • In the future, when mobile devices are embedded in your body, what kind of APIs might be availbe to an application developer?

    - by Conor
Mobile devices have APIs that allow an application to send and receive SMS, make a phone call, determine location etc. In the future, when mobile devices are embedded in your body, what kind of APIs might be availbe to an application developer? EDIT: This is not intended to be a joke question (but what's the harm in some funny answers?). It's to spur a discussion on how one aspect of mobile device application could pan out and what kind of application might be available. For example: health monitoring - various APIs available to get body temperature, sugar levels, etc for transmission to your GP.

  • Is it a bad idea to release software on the night before Christmas?

    - by Conor
We're about to go live with a new version of our system. It's getting really close to Christmas. I work in a very small company. Everyone will be on leave or sporadically available over the next week or so. I've argued with my boss that this is very risky and that we should go live in the new year when everyone is back and when we can provide full support. He is unflinching - he argues that we need to go live sooner - so that we can get new users and more revenue which we need. The number of new users will be minor amount over the next week or so. There has been a decent amount of system testing performed on the system. However a new live system, in my experience, needs a lot of care and attention in the first few days. Am I being pessimistic or realistic? Update - January: The system did not go live over Christmas. Ongoing system testing revealed various problems. So no support issues to deal with. Still preparing for release...

  • What implementation problems are still soaking up all of your time?

    - by Conor
What implementation problems has the industry claimed to have solved many times, but are still soaking up all of your time? Examples: Cross platform GUI - mobile devices have blown this issue wide open. OO to RDBMS mapping - how do I map this attribute to that field in that database using that framework. You get the idea. Interface definitions - ..., CORBA, COM, EJB, WSDL, ..., etc Can you think of any others?

  • Views : ViewControllers, many to one, or one to one?

    - by conor
I have developed an Android application where, typically, each view (layout.xml) displayed on the screen has it's own corresponding fragment (for the purpose of this question I may refer to this as a ViewController). These views and Fragments/ViewControllers are appropriately named to reflect what they display. So this has the effect of allowing the programmer to easily pinpoint the files associated with what they see on any given screen. The above refers to the one to one part of my question. Please note that with the above there are a few exceptions where very similar is displayed on two views so the ViewController is used for two views. (Using a simple switch (type) to determine what layout.xml file to load) On the flip side. I am currently working on the iOS version of the same app, which I didn't develop. It seems that they are adopting more of a one-to-many (ViewController:View) approach. There appears to be one ViewController that handles the display logic for many different types of views. In the ViewController are an assortment of boolean flags and arrays of data (to be displayed) that are used to determine what view to load and how to display it. This seems very cumbersome to me and coupled with no comments/ambiguous variable names I am finding it very difficult to implement changes into the project. What do you guys think of the two approaches? Which one would you prefer? I'm really considering putting in some extra time at work to refactor the iOS into a more 1:1 oriented approach. My reasoning for 1:1 over M:1 is that of modularity and legibility. After all, don't some people measure the quality of code based on how easy it is for another developer to pick up the reigns or how easy it is to pull a piece of code and use it somewhere else?

  • Cisco ASA - Enable communication between same security level

    - by Conor
    I have recently inherited a network with a Cisco ASA (running version 8.2). I am trying to configure it to allow communication between two interfaces configured with the same security level (DMZ-DMZ) "same-security-traffic permit inter-interface" has been set, but hosts are unable to communicate between the interfaces. I am assuming that some NAT settings are causing my issue. Below is my running config: ASA Version 8.2(3) ! hostname asa enable password XXXXXXXX encrypted passwd XXXXXXXX encrypted names ! interface Ethernet0/0 switchport access vlan 400 ! interface Ethernet0/1 switchport access vlan 400 ! interface Ethernet0/2 switchport access vlan 420 ! interface Ethernet0/3 switchport access vlan 420 ! interface Ethernet0/4 switchport access vlan 450 ! interface Ethernet0/5 switchport access vlan 450 ! interface Ethernet0/6 switchport access vlan 500 ! interface Ethernet0/7 switchport access vlan 500 ! interface Vlan400 nameif outside security-level 0 ip address XX.XX.XX.10 255.255.255.248 ! interface Vlan420 nameif public security-level 20 ip address 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0 ! interface Vlan450 nameif dmz security-level 50 ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0 ! interface Vlan500 nameif inside security-level 100 ip address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 ! ftp mode passive clock timezone JST 9 same-security-traffic permit inter-interface same-security-traffic permit intra-interface object-group network DM_INLINE_NETWORK_1 network-object host XX.XX.XX.11 network-object host XX.XX.XX.13 object-group service ssh_2220 tcp port-object eq 2220 object-group service ssh_2251 tcp port-object eq 2251 object-group service ssh_2229 tcp port-object eq 2229 object-group service ssh_2210 tcp port-object eq 2210 object-group service DM_INLINE_TCP_1 tcp group-object ssh_2210 group-object ssh_2220 object-group service zabbix tcp port-object range 10050 10051 object-group service DM_INLINE_TCP_2 tcp port-object eq www group-object zabbix object-group protocol TCPUDP protocol-object udp protocol-object tcp object-group service http_8029 tcp port-object eq 8029 object-group network DM_INLINE_NETWORK_2 network-object host 192.168.20.10 network-object host 192.168.20.30 network-object host 192.168.20.60 object-group service imaps_993 tcp description Secure IMAP port-object eq 993 object-group service public_wifi_group description Service allowed on the Public Wifi Group. • Can't star SSH on Ubuntu 12.10 AWS EC2

    - by Conor H
So i've just started playing around with Ubuntu on Amazon EC2. I've just issued the following command to restart ssh but it has now "killed" ssh. sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart I can't seem to ssh to this instance anymore. Putty just gives me "connection refused". NOTE: In this case I just restarted SSH to see the result. I didn't change any settings. This was to confirm that it was the restart command was the problem and not any configs I made. What is the correct way to restart SSH? P.S. That usually works on other Ubuntu boxes. Thanks. EDIT: It is also worth noting that when I ran that command I was taken straight back to a prompt. I didn't get any output on the console.

  • OS X can't resolve localhost suddenly

    - by Conor
Last week I fired up a website that I'm currently developing locally only to find out that it wasn't working as it was the night before, (or at all). After an inital stage of panic and 'what did I do' moments... I deduced the problem down to the fact that my OS X now wont resolve localhost properly, so connections to my SQL database were failing. I can still ping localhost in the terminal, but in order to get my websites up and running again, I had to change all the localhost entries to 127.0.0.1 This isn't a huge problem as everything is up and running again, but I would like to try to get to the bottom of it. I have a sneaking suspicion that an apple software update caused this issue, as I don't recall doing anything else that would have had any effect. Other than my hosts file (which looks normal), what else could be causing this? Running OSX 10.6.4

  • The pros and cons of learning

This week I am at a training course put on by Paul Randal ( blog | twitter ) and Kimberly Tripp ( blog | twitter ) entitled " SQL Immersion ." It is essentially a 5-day deep dive into some of the more important bowels of the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Internals book they co-wrote with Kalen Delaney, Adam Machanic and Conor Cunningham - with a lot of extra information, insight, experience and interactivity thrown in. I am seeing a lot of benefits from this already. The additional insight around what's...(read more)

  • Not getting a response when using Android Async HTTP (from loopj)

    - by conor
I am using the Async Http library from loopj.com and also the sample code from the site. The problem is that when the request is made I don't get a response. I have even overridden the onFinish() function which isn't getting fire either. I am using the sample code from their site which is as follows: import com.loopj.android.http.AsyncHttpClient; import com.loopj.android.http.AsyncHttpResponseHandler; Log.v("bopzy_debug", "Testing HTTP Connectivity"); System.out.println("123"); AsyncHttpClient client = new AsyncHttpClient(); client.get("http://www.google.com", new AsyncHttpResponseHandler() { @Override public void onSuccess(String response) { Log.v("bopzy_debug", response); } @Override public void onFinish() { Log.v("bopzy_debug", "Finished.."); } }); Any ideas on how to solve would be greatly appreciated, not really sure what is going on here.

  • .NET Test Harness what should it have

    - by Conor
Hi Folks, We have a software house developing code for us on a project, .NET Web Service (WCF) and we are also paying for a test harness to be built as a separate billable task on a daily rate. I have just joined the company and am reviewing what we are getting from the software house and wanted to know what you guys in industry thought about it? Basically what we got was a WinForm that called the w/s that had an input area (Web Service Request) to drop our XML a Submit button along with a response area for the result of the Web Response and that's it... Our internal BA has created all the xml request documents so there was no logic put into the harness around this. Looking on the Net for a definition of a Test Harness I got this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_harness It states it should have these 3 below things: Automate the testing process. Execute test suites of test cases. Generate associated test reports. Clearly we have got none of this apart from a partial "Automate the testing process" via a WinForm. OK, from my development background I would expect someone to Produce a WinForm as a test harness 5 years ago and really should be using some sort of Tooling around this, I explicitly told the Software House I expected some sort of tooling (NUnit,NBUnit, SOAPIU) so we could create a regression test pack for future use. [Didn’t get it but I asked for this after the requirements were signed off as I wasn’t employed then :)] Would someone be able to clarify with me if my requirement for this is over realistic, I know if I did this, I would use NUnit and TDD and then reuse the test harness as a regression test pack in future? I am interested to see what the community thought. Cheers

  • amCharts issue with Flex

    - by Conor Higgins
HI I am working with amCharts at the moment and was wondering if somebody could give me some sort of guidance on the matter. I am using Flex to call a server side php file which then returns some xml data. This works perfectly and efficiently. I then add this data to the chart will also works quite well. However as I try to use the scroll bar on the chart, it seems to zoom out and delete all my data. I cant figure this out at all. The same thing happens when i click the show all button.

  • Progressive MP4 video issues in Flash- Video stops rendering

    - by Conor
I'm currently working on a flash project that has an intro video that plays before heading into the main app. This video is an H.264 .mp4, 1550x540, and around 10MB. The problem thats currently driving me insane is that when I test it, occasionally the video will begin playing, and then suddenly stop rendering the video frames, leaving the audio playing in the background with nothing on screen. Once the file is played through fully (based on listening to the audio), my playback complete event fires like it should, but I can't find any info of people having similar issues. Attached is a trace of the .mp4 metadata in case that helps. videoframerate : 24 audiochannels : 2 audiocodecid : mp4a audiosamplerate : 48000 trackinfo: 0: length : 608000 timescale : 24000 language : eng sampledescription: 0: sampletype : avc1 1: length : 1218560 timescale : 48000 language : eng sampledescription: 0: sampletype : mp4a duration : 25.386666666666667 width : 1540 videocodecid : avc1 seekpoints: 0: time : 0 offset : 13964 1: time : 0.333 offset : 16893 2: time : 0.667 offset : 34212 ... 73: time : 24.333 offset : 9770329 74: time : 24.667 offset : 9845709 75: time : 25 offset : 9895215 moovposition : 32 height : 540 avcprofile : 77 avclevel : 51 aacaot : 2 This has been driving me absolutely insane... any help would be much appreciated!

  • [AS3] htmlText not showing bold or italics font

    - by Conor
So I have a MovieClip asset with a dynamic textfield sitting inside of it. I export my .fla as a .swc to use within Flash Builder 4, and create instances of the asset with code, populating the text dynamically from XML. My issue is that even though I have htmlText enabled, bold and italics tags don't appear to be working. I have a feeling it is because when I created the asset in Flash CS4, the text field makes you specify the font, and the subset of that to use (Regular, Bold, Oblique, etc). Is there any way to get the htmlText to render bold and italics tags properly without having to completely rethink the way I'm creating all these fields?

  • Brainfart: How to make overflow content in a div

    - by Conor
I cant even come up with a proper subject for this one... Basically I have a box div, that when click expands to a rectangle and shows content in the new expanded area. The problem I'm having is that when I animate out the div's width, the browser wants to render the content as the box is stretching, rather than just have it placed where I need it. Initial State ____ | | |____| Clicked _________________ | Content | |_________________| How it currently renders __________ | Con | |______tent| How I want it to render: __________ | Cont|ent (overflow:hidden) |__________| Someone help me out here... total brainfart.
