  • Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

    - by user410925
As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database. When I try and run "bundle install" from the root of the extracted source dir I get: Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mail-2.4.4.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-14 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/tilt-1.3.3.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-08-25 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mime-types-1.18.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-21 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/sass-rails-3.2.5.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-19 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/jquery-rails-2.0.2.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-04-03 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mail-2.4.4.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-14 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/tilt-1.3.3.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-08-25 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mime-types-1.18.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-21 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/sass-rails-3.2.5.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-19 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/jquery-rails-2.0.2.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-04-03 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mail-2.4.4.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-14 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/tilt-1.3.3.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-08-25 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mime-types-1.18.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-21 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/sass-rails-3.2.5.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-19 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/jquery-rails-2.0.2.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-04-03 00:00:00.000000000Z" Fetching gem metadata from https://rubygems.org/....... • How to create a rails staging environment in engineyard?

    - by siulamvictor
I have a production instance in engineyard up and running well. I would like to create a new staging instance for internal testing. I cloned the existing production instance, changed Framework Environment to staging. I can deploy all the code to staging instance from Github. Engineyard reported the server is fully configured and ready. I have subdomain-fu in my Rails app, as I have some subdomain handling in my app. I set the subdomain initializer like this.... SubdomainFu.tld_sizes = {:development => 1, :test => 0, :production => 1, :staging => 2} As the production instance is using the domain xxxxx.com, I would like my staging instance use the domain staging.xxxxx.com. But I got an error when open this domain. Seems the app use xxxxx.com as domain but not the staging.xxxxx.com. I checked the engineyard database.yml. It use xxxxx_production database, I supposed it should be xxxxx_staging. Seems the engineyard instance is not set to staging environment, but just clone all the setting from production server. Does anyone have experience with this and can show me the way on how to fix it? Thanks. :)

  • Autotest notifications on Ubuntu virtual environment

    - by Luciano
I am having trouble getting Rails autotest notifications to work on the Engine Yard Vagrant environment. On the Mac, I normally get the notifications via Growl. However, on the virtual environment (which runs Ubuntu) that doesn't work. I tried running Linux notification setups such as libnotify+autotest-notification, but I get the following error: libnotify-Message: Unable to get session bus: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_call: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed Another path would be to have Growl receive the notifications remotely, but I don't even know where to begin with that... Any suggestions?

  • Ruby DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1.

    - by user297221
Hi guys. I am using rails 3 and at the moment i am writing tests for my application. I get this weird deprecation warning: DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1. Please check how to update your routes file at: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/the-lowdown-on-routes-in-rails-3/. (called from at /Users/jeljer/Dropbox/webCMS/config/environment.rb:6) Of course my routes file is this: WebCMS::Application.routes.draw do #... end but no luck. If I look at the place what it is pointing to in my enviroment.rb: WebCMS::Application.initialize! I did a gem cleanup without any luck. Does anybody have an idea? ps. i am using rvm with ruby 1.9.2

  • Rail 3 custom renderer: where do put this code?

    - by Derick Bailey
I'm following along with Yehuda's example on how to build a custom renderer for Rails 3, according to this post: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/render-options-in-rails-3/ I've got my code working, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where this code should live. Right now, I've got my code stuck right inside of my controller file. Doing this, everything works. When I move the code to the lib folder, though, I have explicitly 'require' my file in the controller that needs the renderer or it won't work. Yes, the file gets loaded when it sits in the lib folder, automatically. but the code to add the renderer isn't working for some reason, until I do a require on it. where should I put my code to add the renderer and mime type, so that rails 3 will pick it up and register it for me, without me having to manually require the file in my controller?

  • I want to use the fleximage gem and s3 for storage, but don't want dev/qa/test env's to use s3

    - by Kevin Bedell
I have a rails app that I'm going to host on engineyard and want to store image files on s3. But I don't know if I want all developer machines to beusing s3 for storage of all our test and dev images. Maybe it's not an issue -- but it seems like a waste to have everyone storing all our images in s3. I've heard of some ppl who store images on s3 'hacking' dev environments to store images locally on the file system -- and then using s3 in prod only. What are other people doing?

  • Am I experienced enough to learn and develop immediately using Ruby on Rails?

    - by acheong87
General Question I understand that discussions revolving around questions of this form run the risk of becoming too specific to help others. So, perhaps a better, general question would be: What kind of experience, if any, translates easily to Ruby on Rails; and if none, then what's the learning curve like, in comparison to other popular languages? Background I have the opportunity to build a website using whatever technologies I wish to use. It's a fairly simple website, for listing products, taking payments, managing customer data, providing a back-end portal for employees to manage data, possibly hooking in flight information (the products are travel related), possibly integrating a blog and all the social-networking goodies. Specific Problem I have to let the client know by tonight whether I'm interested in taking up this project, before he talks to other potential developers, but I'm on the fence. I already work a full-time C++ development job, so the money doesn't do it for me. It's the opportunity to (be paid to) learn some new technologies and to have a real, running product in the end. I've heard and read great things about Ruby, and am really intrigued. I zipped through some introductory Ruby tutorials, no sweat. However I found the Rails tutorials a little overwhelming, especially not being able to try it out anywhere. And researching Rails hosts like Heroku and EngineYard makes me think that maybe I don't know what I'm getting myself into. The ship's leaving port! I wish I had more time to learn, better yet play with the language, but I have to decide soon! Should I venture or pass? Additional Details My experiences are in C/C++/Tcl/Perl/PHP/jQuery, and basic knowledge of Java/C#. I didn't study C.S. formally so I wasn't exposed to design principles, programming paradigms, etc., which is my greatest concern. Will my lack of understanding in this realm make RoR frustrating to learn? Will it be so incompatible with a C++ "way" of thinking that I'll wish I never started? Am I putting my client at risk by attempting this? If it helps, I'm quick to learn new things (self-taught so far) and care a great deal about correctness, using things for their intended purposes, and so on. I've read numerous recommendations of Agile Development with Rails and would love to read it (though perhaps, while developing in parallel, for shortness of time). Worse comes to worst, I'd give up and do the standard LAMP gig, of course, not charging the client for wasted time. But I'm hoping to avoid the project altogether if it's gonna come down to that! Thanks in advance for any tips, insights, votes of confidence, votes of discouragement (for the better), and such.

  • Please help to clean up my RoR development environment

    - by PeterWong
I started RoR development a few months ago, and being new to Mac... Time flies and now I have a lot different ruby versions, rails versions and gems versions located everywhere......And currently I installed rvm and things got even worst, all things messed! And so I started want to clean all things and use rvm again! I want to uninstall all gems, all rails, and all ruby versions, except the system's default one (the very old one born with the mac). Or any other better solutions or suggestions!? • Sunspot_Rails Rake Aborted When Running Reindex

    - by Walter Chen
I'm getting the following output after running rake sunspot:reindex. I'm a novice at Rails. I want to add sunspot_rails to my project to add search functionality (with the hope of deploying the project with Heroku). I'm using Rails 3. I followed the instructions here: https://github.com/outoftime/sunspot/blob/master/sunspot_rails/README.rdoc. My various other attempts to diagnose the problem included: installing sunspot in addition to sunspot_rails. I ended up with sunspot_rails v. 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 so I uninstalled 1.2.1 because I have sunspot_rails 1.2.0. installed the nokogiri gem which I understand is a dependency for sunspot_rails. installed libxml2 separately following the instructions here to install nokogiri: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/getting-started-with-nokogiri/ ** Invoke sunspot:reindex (first_time) ** Invoke environment (first_time) ** Execute environment ** Execute sunspot:reindex rake aborted! undefined local variable or method counter' for [removed pound]<Class:0x10359aef8> /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/base.rb:1008:inmethod_missing' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/searchable.rb:235:in solr_index' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/relation/batches.rb:71:infind_in_batches' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/base.rb:440:in __send__' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/base.rb:440:infind_in_batches' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/searchable.rb:234:in solr_index' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/searchable.rb:184:insolr_reindex' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:57 /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:56:in each' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:56 /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:636:incall' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:636:in execute' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:631:ineach' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:631:in execute' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:597:ininvoke_with_call_chain' /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/monitor.rb:242:in synchronize' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:590:ininvoke_with_call_chain' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:583:in invoke' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2051:ininvoke_task' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2029:in top_level' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2029:ineach' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2029:in top_level' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2068:instandard_exception_handling' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2023:in top_level' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2001:inrun' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2068:in standard_exception_handling' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:1998:inrun' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/bin/rake:31 /usr/bin/rake:19:in `load' /usr/bin/rake:19 This is what I have in class I'd like to search: searchable do text :fname text :mname text :lname, :default_boost => 2 end Any help would be greatly appreciated!
