• Ubuntu Lagging even LXDE freezes

  Laptop, i3, Ram: 2GB. Using 14.04LTS... and it lags like hell. Even if i open more than 4 tabs in Chrome, it freezes, and often I have no choice but to restart and multi-tasking is kinda difficult and at times impossible. Now there's whole thing about Lubuntu and LXDE that are suposed to be super-fast.. installed LXDE.. mind, not lubuntu-desktop. just LXDE. And it too freezes every now and then, and trust this.. when it freezes, it does so worse than Unity.. ESPECIALLY when i start PCManFM... and mount a disk or two... Any ideas as to why this is happening.. The minimum requirements for Unity are supposed to be 1Gig RAM.. and people are running it fine even on 512 MB...

  I'm running 13.04 on Asus UL30A Process: Genuine Intel® CPU U7300 @ 1.30GHz × 2 Graphics: Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset OS type: 64-bit Everything completely freezes after every other a boot or suspend. No keyboard or mouse. It happens every other time. It freezes, I reboot and it works work. Next time I will reboot, it will freeze again. This never happened with 12.10. Any advice on how to fix this?

• Unity GUI pauses/freezes for less than a few seconds

  I've just got my new Lenovo ThinkPad X220 with Intel HD graphics (I'm not sure what the chip is) and I've installed Natty. Everything works great out of the box, except there are short pauses/freezes in the UI that randomly occur, they last less than 2 seconds, actions are still taking place in the background (like typing) when the UI un-freezes I can see the characters I've typed, the app I've clicked, loaded . I can confirm that this is only happening with the new Natty 3D interface, I've tried 2D and the classic interface and there were no issues. Googling this topic seems challenging as I can't relate the problem in keywords. And I keep getting results relating to full GUI freeze which I don't have. This is troubling since I have Natty 3D running on older machines without any issues . I wonder if anybody else have experienced this or came across this issue before. Thanks.

• My pc freezes when I connect to the internet with my iburst usb modem

  I am quite new to it and I'm having some trouble with iBurst usb modem.I followed the instructions of Graham Inggs here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Iburst and now it seems I can connect to the internet, but when I try to connect my whole desktop freezes. When I boot into Ubuntu with my modem connected all is well until I try to open Firefox then my desktop freezes as well.I used Graham Inngs' ibdriver in DKMS fromat solution and it worked apart from the freezing. Graham Inggs made a patch for this problem for older linux versions but I can't seem to find anything compatible with 12.04. Can someone please help?

  Situation is like that. Many times has happened that Xorg freezes and with it also keyboard. Quite some times because of some Compiz effects or Flash (fullscreen switch). Keyboard becomes totaly unresponsive, while mouse still works (I can move cursor, but can't click since desktop freezes) and music still plays and I can connect trough ssh. This is the only way I know I can try to solve problem - either by killing browser&flash or lastly restarting xorg server. This problem appears on more than one Ubuntu computer. My home dekstop with proprietery nvidia driver, on my work where I use noveau driever (opensource driver for geforce) and sometimes (but rarely) also on laptop with ATI graphics (using r300g driver which is really good!). Can someone explains why mouse still works while I can't input from keyboard? (I can't switch to virtual console or do R-E-I-S-U-B command) I have USB keyboard and USB mouse.

• Kernel freezes with nvidia optimus and bumblebee on 12.04

  I have a Sony VAIO with Intel i7-3520M and NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 640M LE]. I installed bumblebee and nvidia drivers. They work almost fine, but the system freezes like in a kernel panic once every day. I can play Dota 2 with primusrun on it with 20-30fps 1080p. But when I do something simple as expanding the KDE calendar widget from the bottom right corner, the system hangs a lot and windows borders get another border. The system freezes in not very intensive graphic tasks, for instance, ALT+TAB with KWin effects or pressing ALT+F2 for poping up the launcher. How can I solve this? Info: I use KDE.   I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong? • Ubuntu Freezes w/ Proxy

  Ubuntu 11.04 freezes completely after a little while when using a proxy. It's fine when it's got a direct Internet connection, but it completely grinds to a halt after about 10 or 15 minutes of traffic through a proxy. Any ideas? UPDATE: Here's some more information. I have a second-generation MacBook, which has both OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) installed on it. When running through a proxy, Snow Leopard works fine, but Ubuntu freezes frequently. Any suggestions at all? Or, rather, what other kinds of information do you need?

  I'm using an fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm having some problems with HDMI. I usually use it with my TV, but since the update isn't working any more. Sometimes in 11.10 I had to execute a script to get the video and sound to work in HDMI, but it was OK. Since the update, when I connect the HDMI cable, it works, but if I make any change in the display settings (like resolution, monitor position, etc,) it freezes. And if I don't change anything, it's working in both monitors, but when I remove the cable, it freezes and even the ctrl+alt+f2 shortcut works. Any ideas for fixing this? I Googled and only found many people having problems, usually with sound.

• Chrome window freezes in Ubuntu

  Sometimes, especially when I open pages that have some kind of multimedia contents, Chrome freezes. It always happens directly after opening a new tab. In contrast to the way Chrome usually has only tabs crashing, the entire windows freezes. If I have multiple separate Chrome windows open, the others keep working. I run Ubuntu 12.04 and Chrome in version 20.0.1132.47 but this has been going on since I last set up my machine around half a year ago. Anyone having the same problems or an idea what could be wrong here?

• Laptop freezes and seems to crash, but continues working after waiting for a few minutes [closed]

  I've had this old notebook laying around and because i was missing a second machine (My wife usually steals the first ;) ) I considered installing Linux. As a php developer I work with Linux servers (usually fedora) on a daily basis and because its an older machine that I want to use for development, linux seemed the best option. Speedwise I expected a good experience, better than Windows 7 on the same machine. The results where terrible. I tried ubuntu 12.04. The shell never got past showing the background. The system doesn't freeze since the mouse still works and I can use ctrl+alt+f2 etc to enter terminal mode. I expected hardware problems en even exchanged the harddisk en Ram memory. No luck though, so I started over and tried 11.10 Same results so I tried 10.04.4 which did install properly. Not sure if unity was the problem, but it seems likely. But then I tried simply things like surfing on the net, the system frooze and I thought it crashed so after a few minutes I pulled the plug and rebooted. But it happened again and I waited. After a few minutes the system came back to life like nothing happened. Long story short. Besides the fact that the entire interface is very sluggish, any and all graphical functions freezes the system. The more elaborate the animation would be, the longer it freezes. I switch chromium from window to fullscreenmode and had to wait 15 minutes to continue. I don't see the animation that's probably supposed to be in between. It just freezes and then after unfreezing its fullscreen. I don't think its a bug. I suspect the problem is with my graphics card. Like I said, its and old system. So old that I can't even find the original Ati drivers anywere. (I'll post the details of my system at the end of my post) I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I tried other Distro's. So far only dreamlinux works normally. Linux Mint won't start as a live CD. I think I simply need a driver update but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone have the same experience ? • What could be causing frequent display freezes?

  I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 two days ago (coming from Win8) and in the two days that I've been using it, my display has frozen four or five times. The mouse won't move but the keyboard does respond so I can use the Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc command to fix it. It seems like it might just be the display freezing because one of the times I was watching a Youtube video and the audio continued playing. I have an Nvidia graphics card with the most recent Nvidia drivers for it enabled. I see that a lot of questions about Ubuntu freezing get marked as a duplicate and pretty much always linked back to a thread about what to do when it freezes. Clearly, I've got that bit figured out already and I did read that thread for further advice. What I'm looking for though is how to fix this permanently. output from lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller [8086:0166] (rev 09) Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:2200] Kernel driver in use: i915 Update: JohnnyEnglish pointed out that Ubuntu is using the integrated graphics, not my Nvidia card. It turns out my laptop uses Nvidia Optimus and I cannot enable only the graphics card through the BIOS. I found out about Nvidia Prime and got it set up using this article. The settings panel which allows you to select the graphics says that 'performance mode' is enabled but when I check which graphics controller is enabled through the terminal, it still says it's using the integrated graphics. I'm not sure if this could be causing the freezes but I guess it's a starting point. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

  I switched to the i3 window manager, which is quite nice, but I have a funny bug. If I reboot and set the wm to i3 (within the lightdb settings) the gui freezes after logging in (i can see the light-db background image and login-form and the i3status bar at the same time, but nothing reacts). To use the system like expected I have to use unity, log out and login (with i3) again. How can I debug this bug?

Interestingly, it is so frozen, that even after I hit cancel, it is still stuck. CPU consumption is at 0% and the command with which I launched the installer is: sudo sh VMware-Workstation-6.5.5-328052.x86_64.bundle Anyone has seen this before? • Wireless mouse temporarily freezes (sleeps) on battery power

  I have been getting a very annoying problem since recently in Ubuntu 12.04, probably due to another update that did more bad than good... When I resume from sleep on battery power my Lenovo Thinkpad T420, my wireless laser mouse (Logitech M705) freezes everytime I leave it for 2 seconds. It then starts moving again when I shake it for 5 seconds. The touchpad works normally. I'm guessing the mouse enters some sleep mode and I'd like to know where to change this "timeout" value.

• Wubi installation: I get os freezes which make me have to hard reboot

  Wubi installation has been going a success for me, but one problem is that I get freezes, My Mouse works I can move it round but I can't click or right click. Sometimes my keyboard works and so I can shutdown safely using commands, but other times the keyboard doesn't work. One example of this is when I was running minecraft and youtube. and to off the laptop the only way was to hard reboot. Does anyone have a solution to this?

  I'm using Xubuntu 13.10, although this problem was in 13.04 too. The thing is that Transmission window freezes sometimes and makes computer not response. This problem appears, when Transmission creates another window, e.g. for preferences, or for choosing files to be downloaded. What might be the reason for the problem?   Hi, I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 its installed using Wubi, dual boot with Windows. It's fresh install. Randomly mouse cursor freezes and cant click anything on the screen. I can move mouse but cant click. "It causes when select a text something" So I'm using keyboard to to reboot system. Then it back to normal after reboot. Tried with unplugging-plugging mouse don't work. PC: Asus laptop with Intel GMA 950 graphic card. A4 tech optical mouse. Ubuntu 10.10 completely updated and upgraded. How can I get around this?   I have recently installed Natty on a new Toshiba Portege laptop. I find it extremely irritating that the system freezes frequently, about every other time I use the computer. Then the fan goes crazy and I have to force-shutdown. It seems to happen no matter what I do; I encountered this problem when using Firefox, LibreOffice, Adobe Reader - probably when using only terminals too, but I'm not certain. It may be fan-related, because the computer seems to get heated up compared compared to earlier, but I am not sure about that. Any ideas why this could be happening?

• Adobe-Flash-plugin freezes when skipping ahead

  I am using Firefox 7 and the new official Adobe Flash 64-bit plugin from the Ubuntu Partner repository. It's the adobe-flash package. It works nicely on the first look but when I try to skip ahead in any YouTube video (by clicking on the video progress bar) sound will go on but the video simply freezes at the position it was just before skipping. This is really annoying because I really don't want to watch every video full length. Now maybe there's cleanup work to do? I removed every Flash-related package from the package manager. Maybe it's Firefox? I couldn't find any hint. Maybe it's the video manager (display manager)? I am using KDE on an Ubuntu Natty install. I also enabled hardware acceleration with libdvpau1: sudo bash -c "echo 'EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1' >> /etc/adobe/mms.cfg" (this seems to have no effect at all ...) Ubuntu Natty 64-bit, Firefox 7, Flash 11.01 )

• Video Freezes Every few seconds

  Hi, I have problems playing videos on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine. The video FREEZES every 20-25 seconds, while I could still hear the audio. I use Totem Movie Player (GStreamer) & have nVidia on-board graphics card & AMD DualCore processor. After some 5-10 seconds, the videos resumes skipping the hung portion. But, I can hear the audio of that part! I've tried it with SMPlayer (GUI), VLC & Kaffeine. But, the same problem... I recently uninstalled the nVidia drivers and since then, not even for a second, no video hung! So, I thought its the problem with the proprietary nVidia drivers. But, since its uninstalled, I'm not able to get the desired desktop resolution & effects. So, is there any way I can work it out?
