• Unix console becomes inactive after closing vim

  user@laptop:~$ locate file.ext | xargs vim -p Vim: Warning: Input is not from a terminal 2 files to edit user@laptop:~$ After finding files and modifying them in vim I want to save them and continue to work in unix console but I can't do that. After vim close console just halts. No activity on any keypress. The only workaround is to close console tab and create a new one. How can I solve this problem?

• Flashing window in gnu screen

  I really like gnu screen but there is a problem in my environment when I use it. Examle: username@domain:/var/www$ l Display all 130 possibilities? (y or n) when you click [Tab] to perform autocompletion there is a screen flashing for a very short period of time(looks like white screen but I can see it for a very-very short time). There isn't any problems with that when I execute the same action in normal/non-screen environment. • Node.js or Erlang

  I really like these tools when it comes to the concurrency level it can handle. Erlang looks like much more stable solution but requires much more learning and a lot of diving into functional language paradigm. And it looks like Erlang makes it much better when it comes to multi cores CPUs(fix me if I'm wrong). But which should I choose? Which one is better in the short/long term perspective?

• How can I fall in love with Math? Again?

  After reading How to not sort by average rating by Evan Miller I was really inspired to learn some more math. But after thinking about it for a while I didn't find a way I can use beyond-trivial math in my pet projects.. Or probably it is a moment like "You are not aware that you are not aware" and I should learn more math before I can start to see great examples of how I can apply it?

• Should I go with Varnish instead of nginx?

  I really like nginx. But recently I've found that varnish gives you an opportunity to implement smart caching revers proxy layer(with URL purging). I have a cluster of mongrels which are pretty resource-intensive so if this caching layer can remove some load from mongrels this can be a great thing. I didn't find a way to implement the caching layer(with for application pages; static content is cacheable of course) same with nginx.. Should I use Varnish instead? What would you recommend?

• Should I consider Erlang for web mvc?

  Can I do that? I'm afraid that this can be an overkill and eventually I'll end up with much less productivity than with traditional stack like Ruby/Python/you name it. I understand that you will start with much lower productivity if you start to work with new technology but .. is it potentially worth trying and finally switch to Erlang as the only tool for web development and all the backend stuff. Or is Erlang more suitable for only some high performance backend tasks?

  I have a node in cloud environment which is used now as nginx and mongrels behind it. This is what nginx config looks like: upstream mongrel { server 127.0.0.1:8000; server 127.0.0.1:8001; server 127.0.0.1:8002; } I want to achieve the following: add another node nginx has to know about this new node automatically without stopping him, changing config(manually adding new node's mongrels) and starting it again. How can I make my load balancer(nginx) work in the way so it can be self-aware of nodes in cloud?

• HTTP headers: Last-Modified - how can it mimimize server load?

  Imagine the following use case: I use an AJAX request for getting some info about Item and use this URL: http://domain/items/show/1 In my database all items have a field called modified_at where we store the moment when this item was previously modified. How can Last-Modified server HTTP header in response can minimize load/reduce requests/increase responsiveness if we need to process this request every time on the server side? It looks like we don't reduce the number of HTTP requests with that response and we don't reduce the load on server. Who needs this anyway?
