  • I need to duplicate software packages installed on one HPUX system to a test system

    I am very inexperienced with HPUX and need to duplicate a production server for a test environment. I have 11.11 on the prod server and have completed the base install on the test server. What I need is a way to add the installed packages from the prod server to the test server. Unfortunately I haven't the foggiest idea how to do this. I've thought of using ignite backup and restore but don't have matching tape types between the two. The other thought was using swlist to gather the installed packages and then going to the website to download and install on the test environment. Has anyone successfully done something like this? Pointers?

    I have a shell script that I execute after uninstalling a web application. The script is meant to clean up permissions that were needed during the execution of the application. find /opt/path -exec setacl -d user:myUser{} ';' After this executes and the acl is removed I am left with an acl that looks as follows user:101:--- /opt/path How can I properly call setacl to remove the user without leaving behind a uid?

  • Problems mounting HPUX LVM+VXFS filesystem on Linux

    I have a physical disk from a HPUX system that I need to access from a Debian Linux for ia64 system. From the hpux-lvm-tools project I have the tools to access the HPUX LVMs (Linux LVM has a different format) and I also have the freevxfs driver. I know beforehand that the disk has three partitions, and that the biggest one contains LVM volumes, and some of those are VxFS filesystems.     Hello, I am looking for a configurable / tunable on Solaris 9 through which I can change the default thread stack size without recompiling the code to use "pthread_attr_setstacksize" For example on HPUX 11.11 / 11.23 the environment variable "PTHREAD_DEFAULT_STACK_SIZE" can be exported (available via HPUX patches PHCO_38307 / PHCO_38955 ) - Is there a equivalent Solaris 9 way to achieve the same ?   • Xnest from Mac OSX to HP UX

    Hi, I'm trying to connect to my HP/UX machine from Mac OS X using Xnest. The problem is that I can not get the keyboard to work. I can see the login-prompt, but unable to type in my username. The connection is done by: Xnest :1 -query 192.168.0.193 -geometry 1280x1024 and it gives me some errors: (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so failed (dlopen(/usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so, 5): image not found) (EE) GLX: could not load software renderer (EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb/rules/base (EE) XKB: No components provided for device Virtual core keyboard Couldn't get keyboard. Just to give you and idea of my problem ... I want to change all the symbolic links inside a particular folder .. New Symbolic link -- /base/testusr/scripts Old Symbolic link -- /base/produsr/scripts Now folder "A" contains more than 100 different files having soft links which points to this path -- /base/produsr/scripts But what I want is that the files inside folder A to point to this soft link --/base/testusr/scripts I am trying to achieve in Hp unix ... would really appreciate your help on this ...

  • Generic tool to configure startup applications on Unix

    Is there an automated deployment tool that manages startup applications on a variety of machines, especially the Unices? Or is the only hope to study the nuts and bolts of each Unix (osx, linux, solaris, hpux, aix) on how to configure applications to launch on system startup? I want to run them as a specific user, instead of root. At the moment, I run them all within a screen session .. which is a hassle, as this requires manual intervention every time the machine is rebooted for some reason. Ideally, I am looking for a tool that would read, say, ~/.startup-programs which file contains, on each line, the command line to launch the needed daemons. And this tool should work on OSX, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX ... writing the appropriate startup scripts for each platform.

  • C programming in 2011

    Many moons ago I cut C code for a living, primarily while maintaining a POP3 server that supported a wide range of OSs (Linux, *BSD, HPUX, VMS ...). I'm planning to polish the rust off my C skills and learn a bit about language implementation by coding a simple FORTH in C. But I'm wondering how (or whether?) have things changed in the C world since 2000. When I think C, I think ... comp.lang.c ANSI C wherever possible (but C89 as C99 isn't that widely supported) gcc -Wall -ansi -pedantic in lieu of static analysis tools Emacs Ctags Autoconf + make (and see point 2 for VMS, HP-UX etc. goodness) Can anyone who's been writing in C for the past eleven years let me know what (if anything ;-) ) has changed over the years? (In other news, holy crap, I've been doing this for more than a decade).

    We currently have an Oracle 9i Client running on an HPUX Itanium platform and are looking at upgrading the Server from an Oracle 9i Windows 2000 Server to an Oracle 11g W2K3 Server. Is an Oracle 9i Client compatible with an Oracle 11g Server? Are there any problems with this configuration or is it recommended to upgrade the Oracle 9i Client to 11g as well?

    The HP PowerProtector user guide states that to install the HP PowerProtector client on an ESXi Host: Download the latest version of HPPP from the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/rackandpower). The ESXi Server is automatically detected, and a shutdown command script is generated. However in typical HP fashion, after clicking through no less than 6 different links to get to the downloads page, I am presented with: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/power-protection/software/power-protector/pp-dl.html HP Power Protector (HPPP) - Windows HP Power Protector (HPPP) - Linux x86 HP Power Protector (HPPP) - Linux x64 HP Power Protector (HPPP) - Linux IA64 HP Power Protector (HPPP) - HPUX The Linux packages contain an RPM and in no way resemble what is in the HP documentation. None of these are labelled for ESXi. Does anyone know where or how to get the HP Power Protector ESXi client installed?

  • XDMCP works for Solaris, not for RHEL

    I have some old RHEL4 servers that until recently I was able to connect to remotely with Exceed (remote desktop using XDMCP) from my windowsXP PC. My PC is connected to our network by wired LAN. Recently it seems something has changed in our network. I can still connect to all the old Solaris and HPUX servers with Exceed, but for some reason I can no longer connect to the RHEL4 servers. I assume this is some kind of "security" feature turned on in our network. Does anyone know what this might be, and how I can tell IT to re-enable it? Update: A colleague has found that he can connect (very slowly) to these RHEL4 boxes with XDMCP if he is using our VPN from home, but when he is in the office using wired LAN he cannot connect to them. So it seems that there is some kind of firewall or ???, part of our wired LAN network, that is blocking XDMCP traffic from RHEL4.

  • Server monitoring for medium scale UNIX network

    I'm looking for suggestions for a good monitoring tools, or tools, to handle a mixed Linux (RedHat 4-5) and HPUX environment. Currently we are using Hobbit which is working reasonably well but it is becoming harder to keep track of what alerts are sent out for what servers. Features I'd like to see: Easy configuration of servers. The ability to monitor CPU, network, memory, and specific processes I've looked into Nagios but from what I have seen it won't be easy to set up the configuration for all of our servers ~200 and that without installing a plugin into each agent I won't be able to monitor processes.

  • REDUX: How to overcome an incompatibility between the ksh on Linux vs. that installed on AIX/Solaris

    I have uncovered another problem in the effort that we are making to port several hundreds of ksh scripts from AIX, Solaris and HPUX to Linux. See here for the previous problem. This code: #!/bin/ksh if [ -a k* ]; then echo "Oh yeah!" else echo "No way!" fi exit 0 (when run in a directory with several files whose name starts with k) produces "Oh yeah!" when called with the AT&T ksh variants (ksh88 and ksh93). On the other hand it produces and error message followed by "No way!" on the other ksh variants (pdksh, MKS ksh and bash). Again, my question are: Is there an environment variable that will cause pdksh to behave like ksh93? Failing that: Is there an option on pdksh to get the required behavior?

When my other colleagues check out the code, compile it and deploy it, they have the same problem. When the build server picks up the code and deploys it on development or testing environments (HPUX), the same error occurs. Also an automated testing machine running ubuntu shows the same error during server startup. The rest of the application runs ok, only that one servlet is out of order. Any ideas where to look would be helpful.
