• Can't copy from hfs+ external

  I've spent days and days trying to figure this out, but still can't. I think I've read every article on this and tried all there is to try, and I still can't copy any file from my mac-formatted hfs+ external drive. Sorry if there's still an article I've missed.. I have disabled journaling and tried all the hfsprogs commands I could find, but still whenever I click on a folder on the external and try to copy it to my home directory, I get this: "The folder xxx cannot be handled because you don't have permission to read its content." I then found an article about inoring this by copying files through the Terminal. When trying to run the sudo cp -r command in the Terminal with my external drive path, I always get 'no such file or directory'.. Does anyone have another suggestion for me? Thanks in advance!

• Trying to login to openssh, permission denied

• EC2: How dangerous is it to turn off fsck for EBS volumes?

  I have been tearing my hair out trying to figure out why my EC2 instances (made from my own custom AMIs) were taking many tries to come up properly. They would fail with the following error: fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdf For both of the EBS volumes I was attaching during startup. Finally, I figured out the problem. I had put this in /etc/fstab: /dev/sdf /export ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/sdi /export2 ext3 defaults 1 2 The 2 tells the system to fsck the drives on the way up. Changing this to /dev/sdf /export ext3 defaults 1 0 /dev/sdi /export2 ext3 defaults 1 0 Avoids the problem completely, but now the volumes are never going to be fsck'd. How much does this matter? Once the instance goes into production it's going to be running pretty much 24/7, so not many fscks would be happening anyway, but still... this just feels like a bad idea. I have not been able to find anyone else even reporting this problem (there are people with the same error message, but different causes). It seems unbelievable that I could be the only person to ever make this mistake, but perhaps I'm just talented that way. :) If there is another solution to the problem I would love to hear it; I have not been able to find one.

• Production monitoring for EC2 instances

  I'm setting up my first production instance on EC2 and want to make sure I have all necessary monitoring in place. There are three different types of things I want to monitor: Is the instance running? EC2 instances can be terminated without warning if the underlying hardware fails, and as far as I know they aren't automatically restarted. So if not, start it back up. Is UNIX running properly? This is the usual stuff about CPU load, disk space, etc. Is the website responding? If not, restart it. I initially set up Nagios on a physical server outside the cloud, but it is really only helpful for item 2. It can tell me if the instance is gone or if the website is not responding, but as far as I can tell it can't execute any commands to fix the situation. My Googling on this subject has yielded a plethora of options - Cacti, Monit, God, Ganglia, and probably more I'm forgetting now. I don't have time to research them all. I am aware of Amazon's Cloudwatch but it doesn't seem to do anything that my Nagios installation doesn't already do. If you already have something like this in place, can you please share what has worked well for you?

• Looking for alternative to NetNewsWire and Google Reader

  I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop. Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides. I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space. Any suggestions?

• iPhone: value of selectedIndex for tab should be consistent, but isn't

  This should be so simple... but something screwy is happening. My setup looks like this: MainViewController Tab Bar Controller 4 tabs, each of which loads WebViewController My AppDelegate contains an ivar, tabBarController, which is connected to the tab bar controller (this was all set up in Interface Builder). The leftmost tab is marked "selected" in IB. Within the viewWillAppear method in WebViewController, I need to know which tab was just selected so I can load the correct URL. I do this by switching on appDelegate.tabBarController.selectedIndex. When the app first runs and the leftmost tab is selected, selectedIndex is a large garbage value. After that, I get values from 0 to 3, which is as it should be, but they are in random order. Not only that, but each tab I touch reports a different value each time. This app is extremely simple right now and I can't imagine what I could have done to make things go this wrong. Has anyone seen (and hopefully solved) this behavior? Update: we have a request for code. There's not much to see. The tab bar controller gets loaded in applicationDidFinishLaunching: [self.mainViewController view]; //force nib to load [self.window addSubview:self.mainViewController.tabBarController.view] There is currently no code whatsoever in MainViewController.m other than the synthesize and release for tabBarController. • JQueryLightbox plugin (0.5)

  I have inlcuded a JQuery Lightbox plugin on my first site and for some reason it is not showing the gallery images on click. the first one works but the others are blank. I built the site in Dreamweaver and it worked fine in testing on Safari and Firefox but the live version isn't playing ball. Any suggestions.
