  • Tweaking log4net Settings Programmatically

    - by PSteele
    A few months ago, I had to dynamically add a log4net appender at runtime.  Now I find myself in another log4net situation.  I need to modify the configuration of my appenders at runtime. My client requires all files generated by our applications to be saved to a specific location.  This location is determined at runtime.  Therefore, I want my FileAppenders to log their data to this specific location – but I won't know the location until runtime so I can't add it to the XML configuration file I'm using. No problem.  Bing is my new friend and returned a couple of hits.  I made a few tweaks to their LINQ queries and created a generic extension method for ILoggerRepository (just a hunch that I might want this functionality somewhere else in the future – sorry YAGNI fans): public static void ModifyAppenders<T>(this ILoggerRepository repository, Action<T> modify) where T:log4net.Appender.AppenderSkeleton { var appenders = from appender in log4net.LogManager.GetRepository().GetAppenders() where appender is T select appender as T;   foreach (var appender in appenders) { modify(appender); appender.ActivateOptions(); } } Now I can easily add the proper directory prefix to all of my FileAppenders at runtime: log4net.LogManager.GetRepository().ModifyAppenders<FileAppender>(a => { a.File = Path.Combine(settings.ConfigDirectory, Path.GetFileName(a.File)); }); Thanks beefycode and Wil Peck. • Log4Net with ASP.NET MVC...nothing happens...

    - by twal
    I am trying to use log4Net with Asp.net MVC and I cannot get anything to happen with it. i created a config that is in my web project root. Here is that config file. <log4net> <root> <level value="INFO" /> <appender-ref ref="RollingLogFileAppender"/> </root> <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="C:\DWSApplicationFiles\AppLogs\app.log" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10" /> <maximumFileSize value="100KB" /> <staticLogFileName value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d [%t]%-5p %c [%x] - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <appender name="RollingLogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="C:\DWSApplicationFiles\AppLogs\app.log" /> <appendToFile value="false" /> <datePattern value="-dddd" /> <rollingStyle value="Date" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d [%t]%-5p %c [%x] - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> </log4net> Before I am asked, yes the application has permissions to write to the directory. I use have tested this and the application has permissions to this directoy. here is where I am trying to use log4net. public class HomeController : Controller { readonly log4net.ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType); public ActionResult Index() { log.Error("In Index "); return View(); } } when I run the appliction and go to this controller. Log4net does nothing. it doesn't create the files in that directory or anything. I have enabled internal debugging for lognet and I get no output errors in the console.   • log4net creates log file but does not write to it (windows service in C#)

    - by user1825172
    I am trying to use basic logging for a windows service. I added the reference to log4net I added the following in AssemblyInfo.cs: [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch = true)] I added the following to my App.config: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net, Version=1.2.10.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b44e1d426115821" requirePermission="false" /> </configSections> <!-- Log4net Logging Setup --> <log4net> <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender,log4net"> <file value="c:\\CGSD\\log\\logfile.txt" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <lockingModel type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender+MinimalLock" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %level %logger - %message%newline" /> </layout> <filter type="log4net.Filter.LevelRangeFilter"> <levelMin value="INFO" /> <levelMax value="FATAL" /> </filter> </appender> <root> <level value="ALL"/> <appender-ref ref="RollingFileAppender"/> </root> </log4net> </configuration> I have the following code in my service: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator.Configure(); log4net.ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Program)); log.Debug("test"); the file c:\CGSD\log\logfile.txt is created but nothing is ever written to it. i've been thru the forums all day trying to trac this one down, but if i overlooked an already posted solution i apologize. thx!

  • log4net affecting other projects which don't even use it

    - by Graeme
    I'm seeing something really strange happening with some projects I'm working on. I used log4net in an MVC web site and this was working great. I then was working on a totally unrelated Console application which uses the SharePoint API and as soon as I include the following line (other lines don't cause the problem) SPLimitedWebPartManager spWebPartManager = web.GetLimitedWebPartManager("http://blah/blah.aspx?PageView=Shared", System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.PersonalizationScope.Shared); I get the following message in the console app log4net:ERROR XmlConfigurator: Failed to find configuration section 'log4net' in the application's .config file. Check your .config file for the <log4net> and < configSections> elements. The configuration section should look like: <section n ame="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net" / > log4net:ERROR XmlConfigurator: Failed to find configuration section 'log4net' in the application's .config file. Check your .config file for the <log4net> and < configSections> elements. The configuration section should look like: <section n ame="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net" / > I get this twice after a small delay. The delay is probably the request to get the web part manager from the page but I'm not sure why this log4net error is showing up in this project. I've gone through the code and bin folders etc. and found no trace of any log4net mentions. Any ideas why this might be happening?

  • log4net: what am I doing wrong?

    - by Berryl
    Being a log4net newb / boob I just copied lines from an NHibernate example project where I can see the log.txt file is updated. Is there a quick answer why mine isn't creating the file? Cheers, Berryl [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch = true)] I saw another post here saying this should go in AssemblyInfo, but in the example project this is just another line in a static helper class. Not wanting to 'mess with' assemblyInfo I also put this in a static helper, along with the following to actually log in the same static helper class: private static readonly log4net.ILog _log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger( System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType ); And in app.config, I have <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net" /> </configSections> <!-- This section contains the log4net configuration settings --> <log4net> <!-- Define an output appender (where the logs can go) --> <appender name="LogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender, log4net"> <param name="File" value="log.txt" /> <param name="AppendToFile" value="false" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout, log4net"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] &lt;%X{auth}&gt; - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <appender name="LogDebugAppender" type="log4net.Appender.DebugAppender, log4net"> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout, log4net"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] &lt;%X{auth}&gt; - %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <!-- Setup the root category, set the default priority level and add the appender(s) (where the logs will go) --> <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="LogFileAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="LogDebugAppender"/> </root> <!-- Specify the level for some specific namespaces --> <!-- Level can be : ALL, DEBUG, INFO, WARN, ERROR, FATAL, OFF --> <logger name="NHibernate"> <level value="ALL" /> </logger> </log4net>

  • Log4net duplicate logging entires

    - by user210713
    I recently switched out log4net logging from using config files to being set up programmatically. This has resulted in the nhiberate entries getting repeated 2 or sometimes 3 times. Here's the code. It uses a string which looks something like this "logger1|debug,logger2|info" private void SetupLog4netLoggers() { IAppender appender = GetAppender(); SetupRootLogger(appender); foreach (string logger in Loggers) { CommaStringList parts = new CommaStringList(logger, '|'); if (parts.Count != 2) continue; AddLogger(parts[0], parts[1], appender); } log.Debug("Log4net has been setup"); } private IAppender GetAppender() { RollingFileAppender appender = new RollingFileAppender(); appender.File = LogFile; appender.AppendToFile = true; appender.MaximumFileSize = MaximumFileSize; appender.MaxSizeRollBackups = MaximumBackups; PatternLayout layout = new PatternLayout(PATTERN); layout.ActivateOptions(); appender.Layout = layout; appender.ActivateOptions(); return appender; } private void SetupRootLogger(IAppender appender) { Hierarchy hierarchy = (Hierarchy)LogManager.GetRepository(); hierarchy.Root.RemoveAllAppenders(); hierarchy.Root.AddAppender(appender); hierarchy.Root.Level = GetLevel(RootLevel); hierarchy.Configured = true; log.Debug("Root logger setup, level[" + RootLevel + "]"); } private void AddLogger(string name, string level, IAppender appender) { Logger logger = LogManager.GetRepository().GetLogger(name)as Logger; if (logger == null) return; logger.Level = GetLevel(level); logger.Additivity = false; logger.RemoveAllAppenders(); logger.AddAppender(appender); log.Debug("logger[" + name + "] added, level[" + level + "]"); } And here's an example of what we see in our logs... 2010-05-06 15:50:39,781 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.Impl.SessionImpl - running ISession.Dispose() 2010-05-06 15:50:39,781 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.Impl.SessionImpl - closing session 2010-05-06 15:50:39,781 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.AdoNet.AbstractBatcher - running BatcherImpl.Dispose(true) 2010-05-06 15:50:39,796 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.Impl.SessionImpl - running ISession.Dispose() 2010-05-06 15:50:39,796 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.Impl.SessionImpl - closing session 2010-05-06 15:50:39,796 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.AdoNet.AbstractBatcher - running BatcherImpl.Dispose(true) 2010-05-06 15:50:39,796 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.Impl.SessionImpl - running ISession.Dispose() 2010-05-06 15:50:39,796 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.Impl.SessionImpl - closing session 2010-05-06 15:50:39,796 [1] DEBUG NHibernate.AdoNet.AbstractBatcher - running BatcherImpl.Dispose(true) Any hints welcome.

  • Configuring log4net appenders via XML file *and* code

    - by Dave
    I started to play with log4net today and so far, I really like it. In order to preserve our current logging functionality, the app needs to create a new log file whenever the application is started. The log file name has the date and time stamp encoded in it. Currently, I've got log4net configured via an XmlConfigurator, which works great, except that the filename for my RollingFileAppender is hardcoded in the configuration XML file. I'd like to continue to use the XmlConfigurator, but after calling Configure(), I want to get at the RollingFileAppender and, in code, change its file value to be a dynamically-generated string. The sample documentation online seems to be down right now, but I've poked through the SDK reference, and it looks like I could use the Heirarchy and GetAppenders() to do what I need to do. Am I on the right track?

  • How Can I tell where log4net thinks it's getting it's config file from?

    - by Mike
    Hi, I have the following log from the log4net debug log: log4net: DefaultRepositorySelector: repository [log4net-default-repository] already exists, using repository type [log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Hierarchy] log4net: XmlConfigurator: configuring repository [log4net-default-repository] using file [log4net.config] watching for file updates log4net: XmlConfigurator: configuring repository [log4net-default-repository] using file [log4net.config] log4net: XmlConfigurator: configuring repository [log4net-default-repository] using stream log4net:ERROR XmlConfigurator: Error while loading XML configuration System.Xml.XmlException: ' ' is an unexpected token. • log4net not logging with a mixture of .net 1.1 and .net 3.5

    - by Jim P
    Hi All, I have an iis server on a windows 2003 production machine that will not log using log4net in the .net3.5 web application. Log4net works fine in the 1.1 apps using log4net version 1.2.9.0 and but not the 3.5 web app. The logging works fine in a development and staging environment but not in production. It does not error and I receive no events logged in the event viewer and don't know where to look next. I have tried both versions of log4net (1.2.9.0 and 1.2.10.0) and both work in development and staging but not in production. For testing purposes I have created just a single page application that just echos back the time when the page is hit and also is supposed to log to my logfile using log4net. Here is my web.config file: <configSections> <!-- LOG4NET Configuration --> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net" requirePermission="false" /> </configSections> <log4net debug="true"> <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <param name="File" value="D:\DIF\Logs\TestApp\TestApp_"/> <param name="AppendToFile" value="true"/> <param name="RollingStyle" value="Date"/> <param name="DatePattern" value="yyyyMMdd\.\l\o\g"/> <param name="StaticLogFileName" value="false"/> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%date{HH:mm:ss} %C::%M [%-5level] - %message%newline"/> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="ALL"/> <appender-ref ref="RollingFileAppender"/> </root> </log4net> Here is my log4net initialization: // Logging for the application private static ILog mlog = LogManager.GetLogger(MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType); protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { // Start the configuration of the Logging XmlConfigurator.Configure(); mlog.Info("Started logging for the TestApp Application."); } catch (Exception ex) { throw; } } Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

  • What am I missing with log4net - No log file created

    - by Saif Khan
    I am trying to use log4net in a VB.NET app for some unknown reason it's not creating the log file. Here is my app.config <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" /> </configSections> <log4net> <appender name="FileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender"> <file value="c:\log-file.txt" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %-5level %logger [%property{NDC}] - %message%newline" /> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="FileAppender" /> </root> </log4net> </configuration> Here is the app code Imports log4net Public Class Form1 Dim log As ILog Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click log.Error("test") End Sub Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator.Configure() log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger("TestThings") End Sub End Class "TestThings" is the name of the VS project. What am I missing?

  • log4net logging problem

    - by Dotnet_user
    Hello everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question. But I'm just hoping someone here might have used log4net in the past, so hoping to get some help. I'm using log4net to log my exceptions. The configuration settings look like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net"/> </configSections> <log4net debug="false"> <appender name="RollingLogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="C:\Logs\sample.log" /> <appendToFile value="true"/> <rollingStyle value="Size"/> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10"/> <maximumFileSize value="10MB"/> <staticLogFileName value="true"/> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%-5level %date %logger.%method[line %line] - %message%newline"/> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="INFO"/> <appender-ref ref="RollingLogFileAppender"/> </root> </log4net> </configuration> I started out by adding this configuration to web.config, but I got an error (VS studio could not find a schema for log4net-"Could not find schema information for the element log4net"). So I followed this link (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/174430/log4net-could-not-find-schema-information-messages) and configured my settings in a separate xml file and added the following line of code in my AssemblyInfo.cs: [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(ConfigFile = "xmlfile.xml", Watch = true)] And in the actual code, I placed this line: public void CreateUser(String username, String password) { try { log.Info("Inside createuser"); //code for creating user } catch(exception e) { log.Info("something happened in create user", e); } } The problem is that the log file is not being created. I can't see anything inside C:\Logs. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Any suggestions/inputs will be very helpful. Thank you all in advance.

  • Log4net Logging Problem : Very simple file appender logging not working

    - by contactmatt
    Here's my web.config information <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net"/> </configSections> <log4net> <root> <level value="ALL" /> </root> <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="c:\temp\log-file.txt" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10" /> <maximumFileSize value="1MB" /> <staticLogFileName value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.SimpleLayout" /> </appender> </log4net> ... Here's the code that initalizes the logger protected void SendMessage() { log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator.Configure(); ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Contact)); ... log.Info("here we go!"); log.Debug("debug afasf"); ... } it doesn't work, no matter what I seem to do. I am referencing the 'log4net.dll' correctly, and by debugging the application i can see that the log object is getting initiated properly. This is a asp.net 3.5 framework web project. Any ideas/suggestions? I thought originally this error may be due to a file write permission constraint, but that doesn't seem to be the case (or so I think).

  • log4net - getting appenders specific to only one logger

    - by andreav
    I'm looking for a way to get all appenders attached to one logger instance. I tried: Hierarchy hierarchy = LogManager.GetRepository() as Hierarchy; hierarchy.GetAppenders() as per documentation this returns all appenders for all loggers currently configured. When I try this: LogManager.GetLogger("MyLoggerName").Logger.Repository.GetAppenders(); I get the same result. I would like to retrieve only appenders attached to one logger ("MyLoggerName" in this case) Were am i wrong? Thank you.

  • log4net initialisation

    - by Ruben Bartelink
    I've looked hard for duplicates but have to ask the following, no matter how basic it may seem, to get it clear once and for all! In a fresh Console app using log4net version 1.2.10.0 on VS28KSP1 on 64 bit W7, I have the following code:- using log4net; using log4net.Config; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static readonly ILog _log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Program)); static void Main(string[] args) { _log.Info("Ran"); } } } In my app.config, I have: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" /> </configSections> <log4net> <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="Program.log" /> <lockingModel type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender+MinimalLock" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10" /> <maximumFileSize value="1MB" /> <staticLogFileName value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="[%username] %date [%thread] %-5level %logger [%property{NDC}] - %message%newline" /> </layout> </appender> <root> <level value="DEBUG" /> <appender-ref ref="RollingFileAppender" /> </root> </log4net> </configuration> This doesnt write anything, unless I either add an attribute: [ assembly:XmlConfigurator ] Or explicitly initialise it in Main(): _log.Info("This will not go to the log"); XmlConfigurator.Configure(); _log.Info("Ran"); This raises the following questions: I'm almost certain I've seen it working somewhere on some version of log4net without the addition of the assembly attribute or call in Main. Can someone assure me I'm not imagining that? Can someone please point me to where in the doc it explicitly states that both the config section and the initialisation hook are required - hopefully with an explanation of when this changed, if it did? I can easily imagine why this might be the policy -- having the initialisation step explicit to avoid surprises etc., it's just that I seem to recall this not always being the case... (And normally I have the config in a separate file, which generally takes configsections out of the picture)

  • using log4net through stored procedures in oracle

    - by areeba
    hi, My objective is to log in oracle 10g using log4net through stored procedure,but this code isn't working, what am doing wrong??? here is the code which I implemented. string logFilePath = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory + "log4netconfig.xml"; FileInfo finfo = new FileInfo(logFilePath); log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator.ConfigureAndWatch(finfo); ILog logger = LogManager.GetLogger("Exception.Logging"); try { log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["INNER_EXCEPTION"] = exception.InnerException.ToString(); log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["INNER_EXCEPTION"] = string.Empty; log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["STACK_TRACE"] = exception.StackTrace.ToString(); log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["STACK_TRACE"] = string.Empty; log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["MESSAGE"] = ((H2hException)exception).Message; log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["CODE"] = "err-1010"; log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["MODULE"] = "TP.CoE"; log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["COMPONENT"] = "Component"; log4net.ThreadContext.Properties["ADDITIONAL_MESSAGE"] = "msg"; logger.Debug(""); I am retrieving configuration for log4net from a xml file "log4netconfig.xml" which is as follows. <parameter> <parameterName value="@p_Error_Code" /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="16" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout" value="%level" />--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:CODE}"/> </parameter> <parameter> <parameterName value="@p_Error_Message" /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="255" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout" value="%logger" />--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:MESSAGE}"/> </parameter> <parameter> <parameterName value="@p_Inner_Exception" /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="4000" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout" value="%thread" />--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:INNER_EXCEPTION}"/> </parameter> <parameter> <parameterName value="@p_Module" /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="225" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout" value="%message" />--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:MODULE}"/> </parameter> <parameter> <parameterName value="@p_Component" /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="225" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.ExceptionLayout" />--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:COMPONENT}"/> </parameter> <parameter> <parameterName value="@p_Stack_Trace " /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="4000" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"/>--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:STACK_TRACE}"/> </parameter> <parameter> <parameterName value=" @p_Additional_Message" /> <dbType value="VARCHAR2" /> <size value="4000" /> <!--<layout type="log4net.Layout.ExceptionLayout" />--> <conversionPattern value="%property{log4net:ADDITIONAL_MESSAGE}"/> </parameter> </appender> kindly give me your feedback and solutions. Thanks in advance.

  • Dynamically setting a log4net property using common.logging

    - by Kyle LeNeau
    Does anyone know if there is an equivalent in Common.Logging (for .Net) to set properties for the log4net factory adapter? I have had great success when just using log4net by doing: <appender name="FileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file type="log4net.Util.PatternString" value="logs\Log_%property{BrokerID}.txt"/> <appendToFile value="false"/> <rollingStyle value="Size"/> <maxSizeRollBackups value="-1"/> <maximumFileSize value="50GB"/> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%date %-5level %logger - %message%newline"/> </layout> </appender> and setting the property like:log4net.GlobalContext.Properties["BrokerID"] = 10 The file I end up with the looks like this: Log_(null).txt when using the common.logging to wire up log4net on the fly.

  • log4j additivity, category logging level and appender threshold

    - by GBa
    I'm having troubles understanding the relation between additivity, category logging level and appender threshold... here's the scenario (my log4j.properties file): log4j.category.GeneralPurpose.classTypes=INFO, webAppLogger log4j.additivity.GeneralPurpose.classTypes=true log4j.category.GeneralPurpose=ERROR, defaultLogger log4j.additivity.GeneralPurpose=false log4j.appender.webAppLogger=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.webAppLogger.File=webapps/someWebApp/logs/webApp.log log4j.appender.webAppLogger.MaxFileSize=3000KB log4j.appender.webAppLogger.MaxBackupIndex=10 log4j.appender.webAppLogger.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.webAppLogger.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%t] (%F:%L) %-5p - %m%n log4j.appender.webAppLogger.Encoding=UTF-8 log4j.appender.defaultLogger=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.defaultLogger.File=logs/server.log log4j.appender.defaultLogger.MaxFileSize=3000KB log4j.appender.defaultLogger.MaxBackupIndex=10 log4j.appender.defaultLogger.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.defaultLogger.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%t] (%F:%L) %-5p - %m%n log4j.appender.defaultLogger.Encoding=UTF-8 insights: category GeneralPurpose.classTypes is INFO category GeneralPurpose.classTypes has additivity TRUE category GeneralPurpose is ERROR category GeneralPurpose has additivity FALSE with the current configuration I would have assumed that INFO messages sent to category GeneralPurpose.classTypes.* would be only logged to webAppLogger since the parent logger (cateogry) is set with ERROR level logging. However, this is not the case, the message is logged twice (one in each log file). Looks like the ERROR logging level for the parent category is not taken into consideration when the event is sent as part of additivity... is my observation correct or am I missing something ? how should I alter the configuration in order to achieve only ERROR level loggings in server.log ? thanks, GBa.

  • Why isn't my log4net appender buffering?

    - by Eric
    I've created a custom log4net appender. It descends from log4net.Appender.SmtpAppender which descends from log4net.Appender.BufferingAppenderSkeleton. I programatically setup the following parameters in its constructor: this.Lossy = false; //don't drop any messages this.BufferSize = 3; //buffer up to 3 messages this.Threshold = log4net.Core.Level.Error; //append messages of Error or higher this.Evaluator = new log4net.Core.LevelEvaluator(Level.Off); //don't flush the buffer for any message, regardless of level I expect this would buffer 3 events of level Error or higher and deliver those events when the buffer is filled. However, I'm finding that the events are not buffered at all; instead, SendBuffer() is called immediately every time an error is logged. Is there a mistake in my configuration? Thanks

  • log4net 1.2 RollingFileAppender not working

    - by Rishi Poptani
    Hi Guys, I'm using log4net v1.2 with a Windows Service App. My RollingFileAppender seems not to work. I'm pasting the logging sections of my service.exe.config below. Can anyone advise where m going wrong? <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net"/> .....(lots of other config stuff) <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender,log4net" > <param name="File" value="D:\\Trinity\\Booking\\OneDay_PostTrade\\logs\\Trinity.log" /> <param name="MaximumFileSize" value="20MB" /> <param name="MaxSizeRollBackups" value="10" /> <param name="StaticLogFileName" value="true" /> <param name="Threshold" value="ALL" /> <param name="RollingStyle" value="Composite" /> <param name="appendToFile" value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout,log4net"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> ...(stuff in between) <root> <level value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="RollingFileAppender" /> </root> .....(stuff in between) <logger name="CSFB.PostTradeRulesEngine"> <level value="ALL"/> </logger>

  • In Log4Net XML configuration is Priority the same thing as Level?

    - by Michael Levy
    I inherited some code that uses the priority element under the root in its xml configuraiton. This is just like the example at http://iserialized.com/log4net-for-noobs/ which shows: <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="LogFileAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"/> </root> However, the log4net configuration examples at http://logging.apache.org/log4net/release/manual/configuration.html always show it using the level element: <root> <level value="DEBUG" /> <appender-ref ref="A1" /> </root> In this type of configuration is <priority> the same as <level> ? Can someone point me to somewhere in the docs where this is explained?

  • Log4Net and GAC - How to reference Configuraition Files?

    - by Adam
    Hello all I am using log4net during my development, as as part of a project constraint, I now need to add it to the Global Assembly Cache. The logging definitions are in a file Log4Net.xml. That file is referenced in my assemblyinfo as: [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(ConfigFile = "Log4Net.xml", Watch = true)]. So long as the xml file was in the same directory as the log4net.dll, everything has been working fine. However now that I've added log4net to the GAC, it is no longer picking up the xml file. Does anyone know what I need to change in order to have it pick up the XML file again? Is hardcoding the patch in the assembly reference the only way? Many thanks

  • Log4net appender filename issue

    - by JL
    I have an appender setup like this <appender name="Scheduler_Appender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="c:\temp\ApplicationLog.txt"/> <rollingStyle value="Date"/> <datePattern value="yyyyMMdd"/> <appendToFile value="true"/> <staticLogFileName value="true"/> <layout type="MinLayout"> <locationInfo value="true"/> </layout> </appender> When the log file first gets created the file name is simply ApplicationLog.txt this is correct. However when the logging rolls - the filename that gets generated is ApplicationLog.txt20100323 (for example), and not ApplicationLog20100323.txt How can I change the configuration so files are rolled to [FileName][Date].[ext] rather than [FileName].[ext][Date] Thanks
