  • Burnt SATA Drive

    - by luvieere
By stupid curiosity, I've connected the FDD power cable to the jumper pins of a SATA drive, and powered on the system. The SATA drive's controller burned out. What now? Can it be replaced, and still be able to read the disc?

  • Capture each WPF MediaElement frame

    - by luvieere
Is there a way to capture each WPF MediaElement frame? Like an event that fires at each rendered frame and allows me to access it. If MediaElement does not provide such functionality, how could it be implemented or what other control could I use? On a side note, is there such a control or method that would allow for off-screen fast rendering of media clips with frame capture? (so I could process frames as fast as possible)

  • MPI hypercube broadcast error

    - by luvieere
    I've got a one to all broadcast method for a hypercube, written using MPI: one2allbcast(int n, int rank, void *data, int count, MPI_Datatype dtype) { MPI_Status status; int mask, partner; int mask2 = ((1 << n) - 1) ^ (1 << n-1); for (mask = (1 << n-1); mask; mask >>= 1, mask2 >>= 1) { if (rank & mask2 == 0) { partner = rank ^ mask; if (rank & mask) MPI_Recv(data, count, dtype, partner, 99, MPI_COMM_WORLD, &status); else MPI_Send(data, count, dtype, partner, 99, MPI_COMM_WORLD); } } } Upon calling it from main: int main( int argc, char **argv ) { int n, rank; MPI_Init (&argc, &argv); MPI_Comm_size (MPI_COMM_WORLD, &n); MPI_Comm_rank (MPI_COMM_WORLD, &rank); one2allbcast(floor(log(n) / log (2)), rank, "message", sizeof(message), MPI_CHAR); MPI_Finalize(); return 0; } compiling and executing on 8 nodes, I receive a series of errors reporting that processes 1, 3, 5, 7 were stopped before the point of receiving any data: MPI_Recv: process in local group is dead (rank 1, MPI_COMM_WORLD) Rank (1, MPI_COMM_WORLD): Call stack within LAM: Rank (1, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - MPI_Recv() Rank (1, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - main() MPI_Recv: process in local group is dead (rank 3, MPI_COMM_WORLD) Rank (3, MPI_COMM_WORLD): Call stack within LAM: Rank (3, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - MPI_Recv() Rank (3, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - main() MPI_Recv: process in local group is dead (rank 5, MPI_COMM_WORLD) Rank (5, MPI_COMM_WORLD): Call stack within LAM: Rank (5, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - MPI_Recv() Rank (5, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - main() MPI_Recv: process in local group is dead (rank 7, MPI_COMM_WORLD) Rank (7, MPI_COMM_WORLD): Call stack within LAM: Rank (7, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - MPI_Recv() Rank (7, MPI_COMM_WORLD): - main() Where do I go wrong?

  • Sort algorithm with fewest number of operations

    - by luvieere
What is the sort algorithm with fewest number of operations? I need to implement it in HLSL as part of a pixel shader effect v2.0 for WPF, so it needs to have a really small number of operations, considering Pixel Shader's limitations. I need to sort 9 values, specifically the current pixel and its neighbors.

  • Fastest sorting algorithm for a specific situation

    - by luvieere
What is the fastest sorting algorithm for a large number (tens of thousands) of groups of 9 positive double precision values, where each group must be sorted individually? So it's got to sort fast a small number of possibly repeated double precision values, many times in a row. The values are in the [0..1] interval. I don't care about space complexity or stability, just about speed.

  • Reasons to start a new project in COBOL

    - by luvieere
Are there any feasible reasons to start a new project in COBOL? What benefits of this language one would find convincing enough to start a new project in it? I'm thinking more about viewing the language in terms of Behavior Driven Development, something related to the steps involved in using a framework such as Cucumber, only that behavior description and step definition would be integrated into one unit by using tha language's features.

  • How can I trace a variable at runtime in C#?

    - by luvieere
How can I track a variable's values as they change, at runtime, in C#? I'm interested in the same functionality that the debugger provides when I'm tracing a variable through execution steps, only that I need to call upon it from my code. Some sort of key-value observing, but for all kinds of variables(local, class, static, etc), not only properties. So, basically, receive a notification when a variable's value changes.

  • Free visual editor for a language that would compile to native windows exe

    - by luvieere
I'm looking for a free visual editor for a language that would compile to native windows exe, no runtime. I'm looking for alternatives to the Delphi suite (so don't give it as an answer), something that would allow me to write Windows GUI applications with ease. I don't care about the language, as long as it gets the job done, but I would appreciate if your suggestions avoid functional languages. Even better if it abstracts the windowing system with something more simple than the winAPI.

  • How can I select multiple text segments in a WPF textbox?

    - by luvieere
Is it possible to select multiple parts of text within a WPF textbox? For instance, for a textbox that contains the string THIS IS A TEST, I want to be able to highlight THIS, then hold Ctrl and highlight TEST without unselecting THIS. For a visual clue about what I'm aiming at, see this article about the feature in Firefox.

  • Mobile Java Applet?

    - by luvieere
Is there any mobile platform that allows me to run Java Applets? In absence of browser integration, at least Java SE capabilities. I've heard of a mobile device capable of running Windows XP - that would probably include support for Java SE and applets; does any one have any hands-on experience with such a device? How well does it perform in terms of Java programs execution?

  • Ideas for a TLA+ project

    - by luvieere
Please give me some suggestions regarding a project topic in the TLA+ language. I'm taking a course on the language, it's the first year I'm learning about specification and verification and I have no clue what to choose to implement in two weeks time. Any ideas?

  • Send and receive data trough the power network

    - by luvieere
I'm not interested in a hardware solution, I want to know about software that may "read" modulated signal received trough the power supply - some sort of a low-level driver that would access the power signal in a convenient place and demodulate it. Is there a way to receive signal from the computer's power supply? I'm interested in an API or library that would allow the computer to be seen as a node in a Power Line Communication network and receive data directly through the power cable, without the need for a converter. Is there any active research in this field? Edit: There is software that reads monitors and displays internal component voltages - DC voltage after being converted and filtered by the power supply - now I need is a method of data encoding that would be invariant to conversion and filtering, the original signal embedded in AC being present in some form within the converted DC signal.
