  • hosting 2 webapps under 1 apache/tomcat

    - by mkoryak
    I am trying to host multiple webapps under tomcat 6 behind apache2 via mod_jk. I am at my wits end with this. the problem i am facing that both domains seems to point to a single tomcat 'domain'. my server.xml looks like this: <Service name="Catalina"> <Connector port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" URIEncoding="UTF-8" redirectPort="8443" /> <Connector port="8009" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" /> <Connector port="8010" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" /> <Engine name="Catalina" defaultHost="dogself.com"> <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm" resourceName="UserDatabase"/> <Host name="dogself.com" appBase="webapps-dogself" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> </Host> <Host name="natashacarter.com" appBase="webapps-natashacarter.com" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> </Host> </Engine> </Service> my workers.properties looks like this: worker.list=dogself,natashacarter worker.dogself.port=8009 worker.dogself.host=dogself.com worker.dogself.type=ajp13 worker.natashacarter.port=8010 worker.natashacarter.host=natashacarter.com worker.natashacarter.type=ajp13 finally my apache vhosts look like this: <VirtualHost 69.164.218.75:80> ServerName dogself.com DocumentRoot /srv/www/dogself.com/public_html/ ErrorLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/error.log CustomLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/access.log combined JkMount /* dogself </VirtualHost> and <VirtualHost 69.164.218.75:80> ServerName natashacarter.com DocumentRoot /srv/www/dogself.com/public_html/ ErrorLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/error.log CustomLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/access.log combined JkMount /* natashacarter </VirtualHost> when i log into manager webapp on both dogself.com and natashacarter.com, i can deploy to a context path on dogself, and that same contextpath will appear on natashacarter - so i know for a fact that this is the same tomcat domain. edit: just found this in my mod_jk log [Sun Feb 20 21:15:43 2011] [28546:3075521168] [warn] map_uri_to_worker_ext::jk_uri_worker_map.c (962): Uri * is invalid.   • how to prevent jsp tags from being reused after being classloaded

    - by mkoryak
    I have a problem where certain attributes in tag files stick around for the next time the tag is used. I think this is because the Tag class is being classloaded, and then that same instance is reused for every invocation. So attributes that i do not set in later invocations are not null like i would expect them to be, and contain stale values! I want this to not happen any more. Does anyone know what setting controls that in tomcat 6?

  • IE8 browser mode vs document mode

    - by mkoryak
    Can someone please explain the difference between IE8 browser mode and document mode in simple terms? What causes the browser mode to change? What causes the document mode to change? If a user changes the mode(s) via developer tools, does the change remain even if the page is refreshed? I am asking this because we are doing some IE8 testing here, and different people have different combinations of the modes, and i want to try to figure out how this is happening.

  • javascript: detect if XP or Classic windows theme is enabled

    - by mkoryak
    Is there any way to detect which windows XP theme is in use? I suspect that there is no specific api call you can make, but you may be able to figure it out by checking something on some DOM element, ie feature detection. Another question: does the classic theme even exist on windows vista or windows 7? edit - this is my solution: function isXpTheme() { var rgb; var map = { "rgb(212,208,200)" : false, "rgb(236,233,216)" : true }; var $elem = $("<button>"); $elem.css("backgroundColor", "ButtonFace"); $("body").append($elem); var elem = $elem.get(0); if (document.defaultView && document.defaultView.getComputedStyle) { s = document.defaultView.getComputedStyle(elem, ""); rgb = s && s.getPropertyValue("background-color"); } else if (elem.currentStyle) { rgb = (function (el) { // get a rgb based color on IE var oRG =document.body.createTextRange(); oRG.moveToElementText(el); var iClr=oRG.queryCommandValue("BackColor"); return "rgb("+(iClr & 0xFF)+","+((iClr & 0xFF00)>>8)+","+ ((iClr & 0xFF0000)>>16)+")"; })(elem); } else if (elem.style["backgroundColor"]) { rgb = elem.style["backgroundColor"]; } else { rgb = null; } $elem.remove(); rgb = rgb.replace(/[ ]+/g,"") if(rgb){; return map[rgb]; } } Next step is to figure out what this function returns on non-xp machines and/or figure out how to detect windows boxes. I have tested this in windows XP only, so vista and windows 7 might give different color values, it should be easy to add though. Here is a demo page of this in action: http://programmingdrunk.com/current-projects/isXpTheme/

  • JSP tag lifecycle

    - by mkoryak
    i just introduced a bug into my code because i seem to have misunderstood the jsp tag lifecycle. The tag worked like this before the bug: i pass the tag some collection as an attribute, and it displays it as a table. The collection was passed into the JSP from the controller. after the bug: a removed the attribute which set the collection. instead, in the tag i check if the collection is null, and then grab it by name from the request (using a naming convention). the thing that i didnt expect: after the collection was initially set in the tag, it would never become null on subsequent executions! it was still defined as an non-requred attribute in the TLD. I expected the tag to not hold on to previous values between executions.

  • jQuery: Get height of hidden element in jQuery 1.4.2

    - by mkoryak
    I need to get height of an element that is within a div that is hidden. Right now I show the div, get the height, and hide the parent div. This seems a bit silly. Is there a better way? I'm using jQuery 1.4.2: $select.show(); optionHeight = $firstOption.height(); //we can only get height if its visible $select.hide();

  • what browser is document.layers sniffing?

    - by mkoryak

What browser are they sniffing for? i am about to replace the code with something like this: var fn = function(event){ event = event || window.event; var code = event.charCode || event.keyCode; } but i am afraid of breaking something arcane and releasing the evil

  • Coming Up with a Good Algorithm for a Simple Idea

    - by mkoryak
    I need to come up with an algorithm that does the following: Lets say you have an array of positive numbers (e.g. [1,3,7,0,0,9]) and you know beforehand their sum is 20. You want to abstract some average amount from each number such that the new sum would be less by 7. To do so, you must follow these rules: you can only subtract integers the resulting array must not have any negative values you can not make any changes to the indices of the buckets. The more uniformly the subtraction is distributed over the array the better. Here is my attempt at an algorithm in JavaScript + underscore (which will probably make it n^2): function distributeSubtraction(array, goal){ var sum = _.reduce(arr, function(x, y) { return x + y; }, 0); if(goal < sum){ while(goal < sum && goal > 0){ var less = ~~(goal / _.filter(arr, _.identity).length); //length of array without 0s arr = _.map(arr, function(val){ if(less > 0){ return (less < val) ? val - less : val; //not ideal, im skipping some! } else { if(goal > 0){ //again not ideal. giving preference to start of array if(val > 0) { goal--; return val - 1; } } else { return val; } } }); if(goal > 0){ var newSum = _.reduce(arr, function(x, y) { return x + y; }, 0); goal -= sum - newSum; sum = newSum; } else { return arr; } } } else if(goal == sum) { return _.map(arr, function(){ return 0; }); } else { return arr; } } var goal = 7; var arr = [1,3,7,0,0,9]; var newArray = distributeSubtraction(arr, goal); //returned: [0, 1, 5, 0, 0, 7]; Well, that works but there must be a better way! I imagine the run time of this thing will be terrible with bigger arrays and bigger numbers. edit: I want to clarify that this question is purely academic. Think of it like an interview question where you whiteboard something and the interviewer asks you how your algorithm would behave on a different type of a dataset.

  • Writing a JavaScript zip code validation function

    - by mkoryak
    I would like to write a JavaScript function that validates a zip code, by checking if the zip code actually exists. Here is a list of all zip codes: http://www.census.gov/tiger/tms/gazetteer/zips.txt (I only care about the 2nd column) This is really a compression problem. I would like to do this for fun. OK, now that's out of the way, here is a list of optimizations over a straight hashtable that I can think of, feel free to add anything I have not thought of: Break zipcode into 2 parts, first 2 digits and last 3 digits. Make a giant if-else statement first checking the first 2 digits, then checking ranges within the last 3 digits. Or, covert the zips into hex, and see if I can do the same thing using smaller groups. Find out if within the range of all valid zip codes there are more valid zip codes vs invalid zip codes. Write the above code targeting the smaller group. Break up the hash into separate files, and load them via Ajax as user types in the zipcode. So perhaps break into 2 parts, first for first 2 digits, second for last 3. Lastly, I plan to generate the JavaScript files using another program, not by hand. Edit: performance matters here. I do want to use this, if it doesn't suck. Performance of the JavaScript code execution + download time. Edit 2: JavaScript only solutions please. I don't have access to the application server, plus, that would make this into a whole other problem =)

  • disallow selection inside an input element

    - by mkoryak
    I am looking to do the following Disallow text selection inside of an input element Do not show the cursor carrot inside of an input i cannot simply blur the input on click, focus must remain in the input. There is probably a way to do this in just IE, i would of course rather have a cross browser solution but ill settle for IE (or FF) only solution. Here is a demo page where you can see why i might need this functionality: http://programmingdrunk.com/current-projects/dropdownReplacement/ if you click on the dropdowns in the first row on page, you will see the carrot inside the dropdown which looks funny. (this wont happen in chrome, but will in FF or IE)

  • Hidden features of JSP/Servlet

    I am interested in your tricks etc used when writing JSP/Servlet. I will start: I somewhat recently found out how you can include the output of one JSP tag in an attribute of another tag: <c:forEach items="${items}"> <jsp:attribute name="var"> <mytag:doesSomething/> </jsp:attribute> <jsp:body> <%-- when using jsp:attribute the body must be in this tag --%> </jsp:body> </c:forEach>

  • is it possible to tell if DOM was modified, and which part?

    - by mkoryak
    Are there any practical ways to tell what part of the DOM was modified if you know that it will be modified? I am writing a plugin that will be running along with javascript that i did not write. an event will be triggered before DOM is modified, and one event will be triggered after the modification. It is my job to decide what was changed. is this possible, and if so what is the least horrible way to do this?

  • convert list of relative widths to pixel widths

    - by mkoryak
    This is a code review question more then anything. I have the following problem: Given a list of relative widths (no unit whatsoever, just all relative to each other), generate a list of pixel widths so that these pixel widths have the same proportions as the original list. input: list of proportions, total pixel width. output: list of pixel widths, where each width is an int, and the sum of these equals the total width. Code: var sizes = "1,2,3,5,7,10".split(","); //initial proportions var totalWidth = 1024; // total pixel width var sizesTotal = 0; for (var i = 0; i < sizes.length; i++) { sizesTotal += parseInt(sizes[i], 10); } if(sizesTotal != 100){ var totalLeft = 100;; for (var i = 0; i < sizes.length; i++) { sizes[i] = Math.floor(parseInt(sizes[i], 10) / sizesTotal * 100); totalLeft -= sizes[i]; } sizes[sizes.lengh - 1] = totalLeft; } totalLeft = totalWidth; for (var i = 0; i < sizes.length; i++) { widths[i] = Math.floor(totalWidth / 100 * sizes[i]) totalLeft -= widths[i]; } widths[sizes.lenght - 1] = totalLeft; //return widths which contains a list of INT pixel sizes

  • spring json writes more json then i want

    - by mkoryak
    I am using the json spring view in order to return a simple JSON object from my controller. The problem is that its returning more data then i want. it is returning the validation errors and things inside of my model when all i am doing is this in the controller: Map model = new HashMap() model.put("success", "true"); return new ModelAndView("jsonView", model); If you look at the bottom of this page in the docs it looks like i am getting back data that POST would return. i am not doing a post, i am doing a GET by going directly to the URL with params. How do i get this lib to return just the data in my model?

  • view-port resize vs document resize in IE

    - by mkoryak
    window.resize event in IE doesnt do what i thought it does. I thought it only triggered when the physical window/view-port changed size (ie user hits maximize on the browser window for example), but it is also triggered if i change the document size, introducing scroll bars. is there any way to tell those two things apart: view port resize, and document resize without writing an elaborate hack?
