  • Thunderbird compact is taking forever

    - by mulllhausen
    One day I came in to work and found that our development server - a Ubuntu box had a full hard disk. I did a bit of investigation using the du command and it seems like mozilla thunderbird is the major culprit. After burning off some backups, the disk was left at 94%: $ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 895G 791G 59G 94% / none 4.0G 300K 4.0G 1% /dev none 4.0G 1.4M 4.0G 1% /dev/shm none 4.0G 140K 4.0G 1% /var/run none 4.0G 0 4.0G 0% /var/lock none 4.0G 0 4.0G 0% /lib/init/rw $ cd $ du -ch | grep [0-9]G 666G ./.thunderbird/ccsmcruu.default/ImapMail/mail.adofms.com.au 666G ./.thunderbird/ccsmcruu.default/ImapMail 667G ./.thunderbird/ccsmcruu.default 667G ./.thunderbird 2.2G ./.VirtualBox/Machines/iBike/Snapshots 2.2G ./.VirtualBox/Machines/iBike 2.2G ./.VirtualBox/Machines 2.2G ./.VirtualBox 670G . 670G total I did some reading and found that Mozilla Thunderbird does not compact files by default - i.e. all of the old emails that were sent to trash are still kept. One of the mailboxes used to get a lot of spam so I guess this accounts for the 667GB. I opened up Thunderbird to see how much space the inbox actually takes up and it turns out to be approximately 500MB - over 1000 times less than the stuff that has not been compacted over the years. So i right clicked on the inbox directory in the tree on the left of Thunderbird and selected 'compact'. I left it for about 12hours but even after that it still said 'compacting folder' on the status bar. I don't use Thunderbird on this PC - it belonged to a colleague who has left the company, however I do occasionally need to look through the inbox for references to the project I am working on, so deleting all traces of Thunderbird is not an option. My question is - is there any way I can monitor the progress of Thunderbird's compacting function? I would really like to know how long it is going to take. Also is there any way I can speed up the compacting process?

  • dovecot imap ssl certificate issues

    - by mulllhausen
    i have been trying to configure my dovecot imap server (version 1.0.10 - upgrading is not an option at this stage) with a new ssl certificate on ubuntu like so: $ grep ^ssl /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf ssl_disable = no ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/mydomain.com.crt.20120904 ssl_key_file = /etc/ssl/private/mydomain.com.key.20120904 $ /etc/init.t/dovecot stop $ sudo dovecot -p $ [i enter the ssl password here] it doesn't show any errors and when i run ps aux | grep dovecot i get root 21368 0.0 0.0 12452 688 ? Ss 15:19 0:00 dovecot -p root 21369 0.0 0.0 71772 2940 ? S 15:19 0:00 dovecot-auth dovecot 21370 0.0 0.0 14140 1904 ? S 15:19 0:00 pop3-login dovecot 21371 0.0 0.0 14140 1900 ? Escape character is '^]'. * OK Dovecot ready. but when i test whether dovecot has configured the ssl certificates properly, it appears to fail: $ sudo openssl s_client -connect localhost:143 -starttls imap CONNECTED(00000003) depth=0 /description=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/C=AU/ST=xxxxxxxx/L=xxxx/O=xxxxxx/CN=*.mydomain.com/[email protected] verify error:num=20:unable to get local issuer certificate verify return:1 depth=0 /description=xxxxxxxxxxx/C=AU/ST=xxxxxx/L=xxxx/O=xxxx/CN=*.mydomain.com/[email protected] verify error:num=27:certificate not trusted verify return:1 depth=0 /description=xxxxxxxx/C=AU/ST=xxxxxxxxxx/L=xxxx/O=xxxxx/CN=*.mydomain.com/[email protected] verify error:num=21:unable to verify the first certificate verify return:1 --- Certificate chain 0 s:/description=xxxxxxxxxxxx/C=AU/ST=xxxxxxxxxx/L=xxxxxxxx/O=xxxxxxx/CN=*.mydomain.com/[email protected] i:/C=IL/O=StartCom Ltd./OU=Secure Digital Certificate Signing/CN=StartCom Class 2 Primary Intermediate Server CA --- Server certificate -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx . . . xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx== -----END CERTIFICATE----- subject=/description=xxxxxxxxxx/C=AU/ST=xxxxxxxxx/L=xxxxxxx/O=xxxxxx/CN=*.mydomain.com/[email protected] issuer=/C=IL/O=StartCom Ltd./OU=Secure Digital Certificate Signing/CN=StartCom Class 2 Primary Intermediate Server CA --- No client certificate CA names sent --- SSL handshake has read 2831 bytes and written 342 bytes --- New, TLSv1/SSLv3, Cipher is DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA Server public key is 2048 bit Compression: NONE Expansion: NONE SSL-Session: Protocol : TLSv1 Cipher : DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA Session-ID: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Session-ID-ctx: Master-Key: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Key-Arg : None Start Time: 1351661960 Timeout : 300 (sec) Verify return code: 21 (unable to verify the first certificate) --- .   • xterm not wrapping text properly

    - by mulllhausen
    I'm configuring both my gnome-terminal and xterm columns (i still haven't picked which of these I will be using) and I have a couple of issues I would like to fix: the typing area seems to be smaller (fewer columns) than the display area the typed text is not wrapping to the next line when it reaches the end - it just continues back around on the same line, overwriting the prompt (i have set a custom bash prompt with PS1 in case this is relevant) $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Debian Description: Debian GNU/Linux 7.1 (wheezy) Release: 7.1 Codename: wheezy $ echo $TERM xterm $ stty -a [peter@pc ~] $ stty -a speed 38400 baud; rows 52; columns 126; line = 0; intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol = M-^?; eol2 = M-^?; swtch = M-^?; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W; lnext = ^V; flush = ^O; min = 1; time = 0; -parenb -parodd cs8 hupcl -cstopb cread -clocal -crtscts -ignbrk brkint -ignpar -parmrk -inpck -istrip -inlcr -igncr icrnl ixon -ixoff -iuclc ixany imaxbel iutf8 opost -olcuc -ocrnl onlcr -onocr -onlret -ofill -ofdel nl0 cr0 tab0 bs0 vt0 ff0 isig icanon iexten echo echoe echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop -echoprt echoctl echoke $[peter@mine ~] $ # the column width only goes up to here ------------------------------------------------> the results are identical in both the xterm and in gnome-terminal 3.4.1.1 and as you can see, the output of the stty -a command goes right up to the edge of the screen, while the typing does not go that far. I have found that I can get the desired result by setting the columns to a very large number, eg: $ stty cols 1800 this fixes both problems. Is it the right way to go about solving this problem? Will this "break" any of the output from programs? So far I have tried top and stty -a and these seem OK. more info as requested in the comments i found that if i cat some input into a file then the columns actually strech the full width of the terminal window: [peter@mine applications] $ cat > /tmp/asd aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqq does this imply that it is actually bash that is restricting the number of columns and not the terminal? if so then how to alter the number of columns in bash?

  • bash rename using regex array substitution

    - by mulllhausen
    hi, i have a very similar question as for this post. i would like to know how to rename occurances within a filename with designated substitutions. for example if the original file is called: 'the quick brown quick brown fox.avi' i would like to rename it to 'the slow red slow red fox.avi'. i tried this: new="(quick=>'slow',brown=>'red')" regex="quick|brown" rename -v "s/($regex)/$new{$1}/g" * but no love :( i also tried with regex="qr/quick|brown/" but this just gives errors. any idea what im doing wrong?
