  • Is there a need for a Facebook specific page title?

    I see that Facebook's Open Graph asks you to have a meta property "og:title". Why don't they just use the HTML title tag? In my PHP code I started going through all page types and coding the og:title property. Then I realized, why don't I just set the og:title to the HTML page title? It would probably save me a lot of work... Am I missing something? In which cases would we want the og:title to be different?

  • How important are SEO Friendly URLs [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Is a URL with a query string better or worse for SEO then one without one? Currently, my URLs look something like http://mydomain.ext/question/5 where question is the Controller and 5 is the ID of the object or article retrieved. In theory I could spend some development time and some server resources to have URLs that would contain more information about the page loaded. However, seeing how websites like Youtube or many others just keep simple URLs with just an ID, I am asking, does it matter? It is worth it??

  • Outlook add email account: requested operation failed

    I am using MS Outlook 2007, under Windows 7. I am trying to add a new email account. I go through the process, I check "manually configure ...". I enter all the info (it's an IMAP). The "test account settings" says it's all good. I click NEXT and ... THE REQUESTED OPERATION FAILED No explanation, nothing else.

    I have a Ubuntu 9.10 server. I have installed apache2 and php5 using the apt-get commands. How does one install php extensions? Are there commands like apt-get to get them? Or should I manually look for the files on the php website and set them up in the php.ini? More specifically, I need mcrypt, curl and gd. Thanks

  • Quick way to convert Excel sheet to XML

    How do you easily convert an excel file into a XML file? When trying to save as an XML File, it complains that the file does not have an XML mapping. Clicking help brings up pretty complicated stuff about XML Mapping file, XLD and some other acronyms. Why is it so complicated? Lately I've realized that tab delimited, CSV and others are prone to formating issues (comas in a field, new lines, quotes, ...). So I think that XML is a better way to process excel data. Please advise. Maybe a freeway tool?

    I am looking for an employee monitoring solution, that would allow us to remotely connect to our computers to see what is happening live, and preferably having some recording capabilities such as snapshots, URLs visited, etc ... I've looked around the web and most softwares I found were from unknown companies, had crappy websites, and made me feel like their either wanted me to install a virus on my computer, or to scam me. Most also seemed to have planted "reviews" online most likely written by themselves. Basically, anyone has experience with a trustworthy company to accomplish that? Thanks

    I have a networked drive (Iomega Media Drive). To be safe in case the drives crashes, I've decided to buy an additional networked drive (WD MyBook World). Now, how do I backup one onto the other continuously? The WD drive came with a backup software (trial version, they didn't say that when i bought it), however it doesn't allow me to select a networked drive, only local drives. How do I backup a NETWORKED DRIVE ONTO A NETWORKED DRIVE? Thanks

    I have a local testing environment in a Fedora virtual machine. Strangely, resources (css and js files) don't seem to work. Looking at Firebug, I see that the browser sends the HTTP request with "Range bytes=0-". The server responds with either an empty 200OK or an empty 206 Partial Content.   • GitHub push to AWS Elastic Beanstalk

    I am using GitHub for code management. I am using Amazon AWS Elastic Beanstalk as a server. Amazon announced that you can use Git to push code to the application server. However, to do this I'd have to let go of GitHub as they are essentially replacing the git server. Is there any way to have the best of both worlds? I don't necessarily need to "deploy" everytime I push, but I'd like to have it uploaded as a "Version", and then I can deploy the version I want anytime.

  • htaccess password protection error

    I have an HTACCESS as follows: AuthUserFile /home/nasht00/.htmydomain AuthName "EnterPassword" AuthType Basic Require valid-user When I try it, the password pop-up appears. Whatever I enter in it, I get a 500 Internal Server Error. My password file is under /home/nasht00/.htmydomain . Its owner is nasht00:www-data (nasht00 is my user, www-data is the group that apache2 belongs to). File permissions on that file is 775. What am I missing? If I try without the htaccess it works fine of course. I have Ubuntu 9.10 with apache2.

  • AWS RDS MySQL remote connection extremely slow

    I have a site hosted on AWS EC2 (Elastic Beanstalk), with a MySQL database hosted on AWS RDS. Everything works fine on the production server, fast and all. However when I try to connect remotely from my local machine, it sometimes gets extremely slow (like 4 minutes to load the list of tables), or simply times out. I added my IP in the security group (which I did correctly, since it sometimes works). When it doesn't work, I at the same time check the prod server and it still looks good.

  • How to disable passive mode in linux ftp command

    I am using the "ftp" command of linux to send data to a 3rd party provider. This company states that we need to "Disable passive mode in your FTP client", and I confirm it doesn't work in passive mode. However, when I googled the linux command, I see that the "-p" flag is "the default now for all clients (ftp and pftp) due to security concerns using the PORT transfer mode. The flag is kept for compatibility only and has no effect anymore." How do I disable passive mode then? And, is it that bad?

I read that storing an "OAuth" token is better than storing their usernames and passwords (which makes sense). What should I store in my MySQL database? The token, secret and username?   • IE Display Bug, jQuery bug

    So I built some complex ajaxy jquery module on my homepage, with the help of "scrollable" from flowplayer.org. It works fine for me on Chrome, Opera, Firefox ... but of course IE is not playing friendly (regardless of the version, from my testing). Objects are not displaying exactly where they should, some are overlaying each other, and when a click a button some divs just disappear. However, if I resize the IE browser window up and down, the display mostly fixes itself. Then if I click on one of the buttons I made, it messes it up again. Until I resize the window again and it looks fine. (note the forceshowIE=1, because by default I hide it for IE people) I was thinking maybe there is a way to force IE to redraw the entire module sometimes?     I've trying to use Zend_Translate from Zend Framework I am using "POEdit" to generate "gettext" translation files. My files are under /www/mysite.com/webapps/includes/locale (this path is in my include path). I have: pictures.en.mo pictures.en.po (I plan on having pictures.es.mo soon) It all works fine if I manually do addTranslation() for each file. However I want to use the automatic file scanning method.     I am trying to generate an RSS Google Merchant, using SimpleXML. The sample given by Google is: <?xml version="1.0"?> <rss version="2.0" xmlns:g="http://base.google.com/ns/1.0"> <channel> <title>The name of your data feed</title> <link>http://www.example.com</link> <description>A description of your content</description> <item> <title>Red wool sweater</title> <link> http://www.example.com/item1-info-page.html</link> <description>Comfortable and soft, this sweater will keep you warm on those cold winter nights.</description> <g:image_link>http://www.example.com/image1.jpg</g:image_link> <g:price>25</g:price> <g:condition>new</g:condition> <g:id>1a</g:id> </item> </channel> </rss> My code has things like: $product->addChild("g:condition", 'new'); Which generates: <condition>new</condition> I read online that I should instead use: $product->addChild("g:condition", 'new', 'http://base.google.com/ns/1.0'); Which now generates: <g:condition xmlns:g="http://base.google.com/ns/1.0">new</g:condition> This seems very counter-intuitive to me, as now the "xmlns" declaration is on almost EVERY line of my RSS feed intead of just once in the root element. Am I missing something?

    In many places in my code, I do things like: file1.php: <?php include('../file2.php'); file2.php: <?php include('anotherdirectory/file3.php'); Depending on the server or settings I try this on, it either sets the relative paths from the "includer" or from the "includee". This is really confusing. So file1 might try to include "../anotherdirectory/file3.php" or it might try "anotherdirectory/file3.php". What settings dictate this behavior? I want to have control over this...

    I want to write a MySQL statement like: SELECT * FROM someTable WHERE someId IN (value1, value2, value3, ...) The trick here is that I do not know ahead of time how many values there will be in the IN(). Obviously I know I can generate the query on the go with string manipulations, however since this will run in a loop, I was wondering if I could do it with a PDO PreparedStatement. Something like: $query = $PDO->prepare('SELECT * FROM someTable WHERE someId IN (:idList)'); $query->bindValue(':idList', implode(',', $idArray)); Is that possible?

  • PHP Localization Best Practices? gettext?

    We are in the process of making our website international, allowing multiple languages. I've looked into php's "gettext" however, if I understand it right, I see a big flaw: If my webpage has let's say "Hello World" as a static text. I can put the string as <?php echo gettext("Hello World"); ?>, generate the po/mo files using a tool. Then I would give the file to a translator to work on. A few days later we want to change the text in English to say "Hello Small World"? Do I change the value in gettext? Do I create an english PO file and change it there? If you change the gettext it will consider it as a new string and you'll instantly loose the current translation ... It seems to me that gradually, the content of the php file will have old text everywhere. Or people translating might have to be told "when you see Hello World, instead, translate Hello Small World". I don't know I'm getting confused. In other programming languages, I've seen that they use keywords such as web.home.featured.HelloWorld. What is the best way to handle translations in PHP? Thanks
