  • OpenSSH 5.9p1 on Ubuntu 11.10

    - by Michal Burak
    I want to build a deb package with the latest version of openssh from source. Then I want to install it on my machine. I am running: Linux Ubuntu-1110-oneiric-64-minimal 3.0.0-12-server #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 16:36:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux To achieve my goal I do: wget ftp://ftp.openbsd.com/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/openssh-5.9p1.tar.gz wget ftp://ftp.openbsd.com/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/openssh-5.9p1.tar.gz.asc gpg openssh-5.9p1.tar.gz.asc apt-get build-dep openssh-server openssh-client apt-get source openssh-server cd openssh-5.8p1/ uupdate -v 5.9p1 /root/packages/openssh/openssh-5.9p1.tar.gz cd ../openssh-5.9p1 dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -nc But I get an error: make[1]: Entering directory `/root/packages/openssh/openssh-5.9p1' rm -f debian/tmp/etc/ssh/sshd_config dh_install -Nopenssh-client-udeb -Nopenssh-server-udeb --fail-missing cp: cannot stat `debian/tmp/usr/bin/ssh-vulnkey': No such file or directory dh_install: cp -a debian/tmp/usr/bin/ssh-vulnkey debian/openssh-client//usr/bin/ returned exit code 1 make[1]: *** [override_dh_install] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/packages/openssh/openssh-5.9p1' make: *** [binary] Error 2 dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2 Any ideas what do I do to make this work?

  • Chroot with CentOS 5.3 + openssh 4.3p2

    - by Scud
OS: CentOS 5.3, with openssh 4.3p2 Trying to set 'chroot' in ssh shell, but openssh version prior to 4.8 doesn't take below settings. yum update openssh open up to version 4.3 which is quite old. Doesn't CentOS support openssh 4.8 or up? If that's the case, how to set chroot with openssh 4.3? or is it better to just using FTP? My purpose is limit SFTP or FTP access to certain folder, not root folder. Thanks! Match group sftponly ChrootDirectory /home/%u X11Forwarding no AllowTcpForwarding no ForceCommand internal-sftp

  • SSH is not working .. Password promt is not coming

    - by Sumanth Lingappa
I am not able to SSH into my ubuntu server since yesterday. I am not using any keyless or public key method.. Its simple SSH with username and password everytime.. However I can do a VNC session running on my ubuntu server.. But I am afraid that if the vnc session goes out, I wont be having any way to login to the server.. My ssh-vvv output is as below.. sumanth@sumanth:~$ ssh -vvv user@serverIP OpenSSH_6.6.1, OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config • Why is OpenSSH not using the user specified in ssh_config?

    - by Jordan Evens
I'm using OpenSSH from a Windows machine to connect to a Linux Mint 9 box. My Windows user name doesn't match the ssh target's user name, so I'm trying to specify the user to use for login using ssh_config. I know OpenSSH can see the ssh_config file since I'm specifying the identify file in it. The section specific to the host in ssh_config is: Host hostname HostName hostname IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_dsa User username Compression yes If I do ssh username@hostname it works. Trying using ssh_config only gives: F:\>ssh -v hostname OpenSSH_5.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010 debug1: Connecting to hostname [XX.XX.XX.XX] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: permanently_set_uid: 0/0 debug1: identity file /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/id_dsa type 2 debug1: identity file /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debia n-3ubuntu5 debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu5 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.6 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REQUEST(1024<1024<8192) sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_INIT sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REPLY debug1: Host 'hostname' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/known_hosts:1 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: Roaming not allowed by server debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Offering DSA public key: /cygdrive/f/progs/OpenSSH/home/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). I was under the impression that (as outlined in this question: How to make ssh log in as the right user?) specifying User username in ssh_config should work. Why isn't OpenSSH using the username specified in ssh_config?

  • Basic proxy with OpenSSH, Cygwin, Putty

    - by clang1234
I know this is probably a common question, but after looking around for a few hours (on this site and others), I can't find a solution. I'm trying to set up a simple proxy. I already have a server running Windows Server 2008. I've installed Cygwin and have OpenSSH installed. I also have sshd (the openssh daemon) running. Port 22 is forwarded correctly. On my client side I have Putty on a Windows 7 machine. I can successfully open a connection to my server and log in to access the shell. So what do I do next? Do I just name the ports I want tunneled in Putty or do I need to tell my SSH server what to do with those ports? Thanks for the help. Let me know if I left anything out.

  • OpenSSH SFTP: chrooted user with access to other chrooted users' files

    - by HannesFostie
Decided to re-phrase the question entirely in order to not have to make a new one. I currently have an SFTP server set up using OpenSSH's SFTP functionality. All my users are chrooted, and everything works. What I need most right now is for one user, which is not root (because this user can't have any real SSH powers!), to have access to all other users' chrooted dirs. This user's job is to fetch all uploaded documents every once in a while. Directory structure as of now is: /home |_ /home/user1 |_ /home/user2 |_ /home/user3 With ChrootDirectory set as /home/%u User "adminuser" should have access to user1, user2 and user3's directories without having access to /home or at the very least not to anything but /home. Bonus points for the one who can tell me how to let users write inside /home/%u without having to make a new directory inside that dir which they own themselves, and not root as is the case with /home/%u (openssh chroot prerequisite).

  • Win7 OpenSSH config: no address associated with name

    - by Jonah
I am using OpenSSH on win7. My home dir is C:\Users\JG, and inside that dir I have the file C:\Users\JG\.ssh\config, with these contents: Host <redacted server ip here> HostName digitalocean_git User git IdentityFile ~/.ssh/digitalocean_moocho/id_rsa The id file pointed to by the "IdentityFile" entry works, as I use it just fine via putty, but for this problem I am trying to get command line OpenSSH working. The crux of the problem is explained by this output: >ssh -v digitalocean_git OpenSSH_4.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007 debug1: Reading configuration data /c/Users/JG/.ssh/config ssh: digitalocean_git: no address associated with name Why is no address associated with the name? How can I make this work?

  • OpenSSH (Windows) does not forward X11

    - by Shulhi Sapli
I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 in VM and I wanted to do X11 forwarding to my host (Win 8), so far it works fine using PuTTY and XMing server for Windows. But I am curious why it doesn't work if I use OpenSSH binaries (it comes together with Git for windows). This is what I've done so far: ssh -X [email protected] (also tried with -Y) then gedit but received error of Cannot open display. echo $DISPLAY came out as empty. So, I try to export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 but it still won't work. The DISPLAY environment that I set is exactly as when it runs with Putty. I also try changing the DISPLAY to 192.168.2.3:0.0 and other display number as well, but still it won't work. Of course I could just use Putty to make it work, but I was wondering why OpenSSH binaries does not work. I have enabled all settings required in both /etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etc/ssh/sshd_config. If I run with -v option, this is what I get F:\SkyDrive\Projects> ssh -X -v [email protected] OpenSSH_4.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007 debug1: Connecting to 192.168.2.3 [192.168.2.3] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /c/Users/Shulhi/.ssh/identity type -1 debug1: identity file /c/Users/Shulhi/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /c/Users/Shulhi/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_6.1p1 Debian-4 debug1: match: OpenSSH_6.1p1 Debian-4 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.6 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-cbc hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-cbc hmac-md5 none debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REQUEST(1024<1024<8192) sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_INIT sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REPLY debug1: Host '192.168.2.3' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /c/Users/Shulhi/.ssh/known_hosts:2 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/Shulhi/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/Shulhi/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Next authentication method: password [email protected]'s password: It seems that there is no request for X11 (I'm not sure if there is should be one too here). • OpenSSH does not accept public key?

    - by Bob
I've been trying to solve this for a while, but I'm admittedly quite stumped. I just started up a new server and was setting up OpenSSH to use key-based SSH logins, but I've run into quite a dilemma. All the guides are relatively similar, and I was following them closely (despite having done this once before). I triple checked my work to see if I would notice some obvious screw up - but nothing is apparent. As far as I can tell, I haven't done anything wrong (and I've checked very closely). If it's any help, on my end I'm using Cygwin and the server is running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. Anyways, here is the output (I've removed/censored some parts for privacy (primarily anything with my name, website, or its IP address), but I can assure you that nothing is wrong there): $ ssh user@host -v OpenSSH_5.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011 debug1: Connecting to host [ipaddress] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa type 1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_ecdsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_ecdsa-cert type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1 debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.9 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: sending SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_INIT debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY debug1: Server host key: ECDSA 24:68:c3:d8:13:f8:61:94:f2:95:34:d1:e2:6d:e7:d7 debug1: Host 'host' is known and matches the ECDSA host key. debug1: Found key in /home/user/.ssh/known_hosts:2 debug1: ssh_ecdsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: Roaming not allowed by server debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Trying private key: /home/user/.ssh/id_ecdsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try. • how to setup OpenSSH per-user authentication types?

    - by Seaweed
Hi - I'd like to be able to have one set of users authenticating using public key auth and the other set to use username/password. Is this possible in OpenSSH on Linux? If so how do I go about it? Right now, I'm stuck with only having one option as far as I can see in /et/ssh/sshd_config - it's either PAM or PublicKey authentication...

  • Is there an available repository to update OpenSSH to 4.8+ on Centos 5.4?

    - by benjisail
Hi, I need OpenSSH 4.8+ in order to do setup a clean chrooted SFTP on my Centos 5.4 with Remi and EPEL repositories. Is there a repository for Centos which contain an updated OpenSSH? Thanks! Extra info : I want OpenSSH 4.8+ in order to not install an extra library (RSSH) when OpenSSH can already handle it. However if you think that there is a cleaner and easier to maintain way to install a chrooted SFTP server let me know!

  • OpenSSH SFTP server with chroot() + user with chroot exception

    - by HannesFostie
I am currently setting up an SFTP server but there is one detail I can't seem to figure out. When I add a user, I would like him to connect using his client and be able to write in his "root dir" right away. My Match case for the SFTP-users group currently has ChrootDirectory set as "/home/%u", and inside that directory I have to have a subdirectory owned by the user, while /home/%u itself is owned by root. Next to that, the "root dir" also has a couple files, .bashrc to name one. Is it possible to put these files somewhere else, remove them, or at least make them invisible to the user? Thanks EDIT: One more little thing I'd like to implement is for one account to have read (or rw, not sure yet) access to all other users' home directories. What is the easiest way to implement this? EDIT 2: Basically, having one user be an exception to the chroot rule would get me started.

  • Change OpenSSH account password in Linux

    - by TK Kocheran
I suppose that my main Linux user account password serves as my SSH password as well. Is there a way I can modify this? As it turns out, I'd like to have a REALLY secure SSH password for obvious reasons, but a less secure local password, as it makes typing in passwords a heck of a lot easier on a machine. Is there a way I can change my account password in SSH without changing my Linux user password?

  • Cannot connect via OpenSSH and FTP to my ubuntu server

    - by budde
Hello I have installed a webserver (ubuntu server 10.04) and it is connected to the internet. I can tell because the apache server apparently is working. But i can't get SSH or FTP to work. When I try to login from my laptop (SSH user@my-ip) ,SSH asks for my password, and when i give it, it does nothing! Also when I give the wrong password, it tells me that the password is incorrect. I'm also receiving an error while trying to connect by FTP. Sorry could not display all the contents of "/ on [my-ip]": DBus error

  • OpenSSH connection trouble

    - by gnostical
Hi, I'm trying to use Putty 0.60 to log in to an OpenSSH 5.3 server. Connections with openssh from another Linux server are possible, but Putty fails. Putty's event log tells me "software caused connection abort" right after the DH key exchange, the server log doesn't report anything (set to INFO). I analyzed the traffic with Wireshark and got a whole bunch of "TCP retransmission" and "TCP DUP ACK" after said key exchange. Sometimes I was able to log in, but at some point (usually < 2 min.) the connection froze without any logged messages. Sadly, I didn't capture a trace. The server is my own (Funtoo with genkernel and gentoo-sources 2.6.34), so I may tweak it, but I'd still like to know what causes the error. Any suggestions? Thank you!

  • How to rebuild openssh 5.2p1 after changing configure.ac

    - by Arthur Ulfeldt
I needed to add AM_PATH_CHECK to configure.am I then try to run the usual sequence of autotools commands to rebuild all the makefiles and whatnot: aclocal automake -ac autoheader autoreconf ./configure make and here my lack of understanding of autotools showes up because this release of openssh has no Makefile.am??? now what do I do? if i try to ignore this and build anyway configure dies with this lovely error: checking whether OpenSSL's PRNG is internally seeded... yes ./configure: line 18275: syntax error near unexpected token `PROG_LS,' ./configure: line 18275: `OSSH_PATH_ENTROPY_PROG(PROG_LS, ls)' caused by this line in configure.ac: OSSH_PATH_ENTROPY_PROG(PROG_LS, ls) Is this actually caused by my changes to configure.ac? what can I do to regenerate the required files to allow configure to work? if i take my changes out and dont run aclocal then it works???

  • sshd running but no PID file

    - by dunxd
I'm recently started using monit to monitor the status of sshd on my CentOS 5.4 server. This works fine, but every so often monit reports that sshd is no longer running. This isn't true - I am still able to login to the server via ssh, however I note the following: There is no longer any PID file at /var/run/sshd.pid - after a reboot this file exists. Once it is gone, restarting sshd via service sshd restart does not create the PID file. sudo service sshd status reports openssh-daemon is stopped - again, restarting sshd does not change this, but a reboot does. sudo service sshd stop reports failed, presumably because of the missing PID file. Any idea what is going on? Update sudo netstat -lptun gives the following output relating to port 22 tcp 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 20735/sshd Killing the process with this PID as suggested by @Henry and then starting sshd via service results in service sshd status recognising the process by PID again. Would still like to understand this better. RPM verify suggested by a couple of answerers shows this: sudo rpm -vV openssh openssh-server openssh-clients | grep 'S\.5' S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/sshd S.5....T c /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/pam.d/sshd has the following contents: #%PAM-1.0 auth include system-auth account required pam_nologin.so account include system-auth password include system-auth session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke session include system-auth #session required pam_loginuid.so Should that last line be commented out? Update Here's the output of @YannickGirouard 's script: $ sudo ./sshd_test Searching for the process listening on port 22... • How to create a init.d script for openssh-server which was compiled and installed from source using configure + make + make install?

    - by Patrick L
I have installed openssh-server in my Ubuntu PC using apt-get install openssh-server. The version is 5.9. Now, I would like to compile and install openssh-server version 6.2 from source codes. I have successfully downloaded the source codes, and run the following commands: ./configure make make install I found that the new version of openssh-server was installed into /usr/local/sbin/. The old version of openssh-server is in /usr/sbin/. I found that the service script in /etc/init.d/ssh is still pointing to /usr/sbin/. And the old openssh-server (v5.9) is still running. How can I replace the old openssh-server with the new openssh-server that I have just compiled and installed? How can I create a init.d script to start and stop the new openssh-server that I've compiled from source manually? How to start the new openssh-server on boot? When I install openssh-server using apt-get install, the config files will be installed into /etc/ssh/. If I compile and install it from source, where is the config file? If I compiled openssh-server from source, but I install openssh-client package using apt-get install, will there be any config files conflict? Thanks.
