• Where can I find accessible bug/issue databases with complete revision history

  I'm performing some research and analysis on bug/issue tracking databases and more specifically on how programmers and teams of programmers actually interact with them. What I'm looking for involves understanding how those databases change over time. So what I don't need for example: is a database of all the bugs of some open source project as the bugs exist today. What I do need is a complete set of revision history for every issue/bug in the database. This would enable me to pick a specific datetime and say here were the list of all the issues/bugs that existed at that moment in time. Anyway know of some publicly accessible issue/bug databases that expose this revision data? • Looking for a reporting tool that will allow vector graphics in output file (PDF)

  I have been tasked with evaluating our current system that we use for creating and outputing reports. Currently we are using Crystal Reports ver 8, (I know that this is and old version.), which has a custom commandline app that we wrote in C# to execute the report for a given parameter passed through the command line. We like Crystal becuase it's easy to setup and design the report. It's also easy to print and create a PDF file from crystal using our custom commandline program. One of the problems/complaints that we have is that Crystal does does not appear to have a method that will allow us to create a PDF file with a vector images, such as our company logo. Crystal Reports always converts an image into a bitmap. When the PDF is printed, the results are less than flattering, and the PDF file size is increased. Does anyone have any recomendadtions for a reporting product that we should consider?

  Hi, I'm trying to get a list of available reports via the webservice for SQL Reporting Services 2005 express edition. Each time I try to call the ListChildren method I get an insuffient permission exception. The code is: ReportingService2005SoapClient rService = new ReportingService2005SoapClient(); CatalogItem[] cItems = null; rService.ListChildren("/", false, out cItems); I added the ASP.net (iusr) account into the local admin group on the PC and still get the exception. • Robustly killing Windows programs stuck reporting 'problems'

  I am looking for a means to kill a Windows exe program that, when being tested from a python script, crashes and presents a dialog to the user; as this program is invoked many times, and may crash repeatedly, this is not suitable. The problem dialog is the standard reporting of a Windows error: "Foo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and offers a Debug, Send Error Report, and Don't Send buttons. I am able to kill other forms of dialog resulting from crashes (e.g. a Debug build's assert failure dialog is OK.) I have tried taskkill.exe, pskill, and the terminate() function on the Popen object from the subprocess module that was used to invoke the .exe Has anyone encountered this specific issue, and found a resolution? I expect automating user input to select the window, and press the "Don't Send" button is one possible solution, but I would like something far simpler if possible

• Reporting services - custom library is not working after installing report on production Server

  Greetings, I created a report which uses custom library created by me. I've copied these libraries to the following folders: c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\ c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ Everything works find when I run the report using Visual Studio. When I install it on Production Server (where these dlls were also copied) the following error is returned: Failed to load expression host assembly. Details: The type initializer for 'MyParserForReportingServices.MyParser' threw an exception. (rsErrorLoadingExprHostAssembly) Can someone please help me?

  Hi, I have a fairly basic SQL Server Reporting Services report that is using nested row groups. Each sub-group depends on expanding its parent to be visible which is all pretty standard. The layout is something like this: { Company { { Car SUM(Price) { { { Part Price My desired result when expanded is something like this (which I get fine): - SuperCarCompany - SuperCar 20 Door 20 - SuperCar2 70 Door 30 Window 40 - OtherCarCompany - SuperCar2 50 /* Same SuperCar2 */ Door 50 - MoreCarCompany - BestCarEver 535 Engine 500 Door 30 Window 5 And when opened initially something like this: + SuperCarCompany + OtherCarCompany + MoreCarCompany However, I'm getting this: + SuperCarCompany + SuperCar2 70 (i.e. sum of all SuperCar2) + OtherCarCompany + SuperCar 20 + MoreCarCompany + BestCarEver 535 and I can even expand these superfluous rows like this: + SuperCarCompany - SuperCar2 70 (i.e. sum of all SuperCar2) Door 30 (i.e. first child of any SuperCar2) The superflous rows dissapear immediately when I expand the expected row above it (i.e. I'd need to expand all expected rows to get rid of all superflous rows). Any idea on the cause?

  Hi everyone, I'm new to SQL Server reporting services, and am trying to decipher an existing report. It's nothing too bad, but I notice it does have two report datasets defined. (They are generated via separate stored procedures) I'm trying to figure out where and how the report datasets are linked together so the Fields collection has both sets of columns available and the report has a single rowset to traverse. Is there a section in the report layout where a joining of datasets is defined? I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to design and preview the report fwiw. Thanks for your help!

• Create Sum of calculated rows in Microsoft Reporting Services

  This seems like it should be simple but I can't find anything yet. In Reporting Services I have a table with up to 6 rows that all have calculated values and dynamic visibility. I would like to sum these rows. Basically I have a number of invoice items and want to make a total. I can't change anything on the DB side since my stored procedures are used elsewhere in the system. Each row pulls data from a different dataset as well, so I can't do a sum of the dataset. Can I sum all the rows with a table footer? Similarly to totaling a number of rows in Excel? It seems very redundant to put my visibility expression from each row into my footer row to calculate the sum.

(919) 582-2914 Is this possible to right-pad the text box with periods, or would I need to roll out some code to accomplish the above effect. • Buy or build tool for Data Reporting ?

  We have been asked to provide a data reporting solution. The followng are the requirements: i. The client has a lot of data which is generated everyday as an outcome of the tests they run. These tests are run at several sites and they get automatically backed up into a central server. ii. They already have perl scripts which post process them and generates excel based reports. iii. They need a web based interface for comparing those reports and they need to mark and track issues which might be present in those data. I am confused if we should build our own tool for this or we should go for already exiting tool(any suggestions?). Can you please provide supportive arguments for the decision that you would suggest?

• Using Report (Reporting Services) parameter values in ASP.NET page

  I have a report (Reporting Services) integrated into an ASP.NET that shows dropdownlists to select report parameter values. The dropdownlists are populated using direct database selects, though I see the report RDL files do contain the paramter values and datasets as defined in the report designer. Is it possible to obtain the report parameters "available values" in ASP.NET to populate the dropdownlists? This would avoid some code duplication. Update If the parameter doesn't use a query for available values, the following works: foreach (ValidValue value in this.ReportViewerControl.ServerReport.GetParameters()["myParameter"].ValidValues) { this.DropDownListControl.Items.Add(new ListItem(value.Label, value.Value)); } Still haven't found a way to access report datasets though...

• Reporting. MS Word templates population required

  Application we developed fills MS Word templates with data from Database. Customers require to have ability edit Word templates via MS Word (change style, font, layout e.t.c) with no additional software to be installed and no training. AFAIK, Sql Reporting Services and Crystal Reports can't populate MS Word templates produced in MS Word. So we implemented our custom solution that maps .net classes onto xml-saved MS Word documents. It looks like we declare class MyTemplate { // maps to [age] field declared in ms document straight in the text int Age { get; set; } // maps to table by attributes applied to property (omitted) List<Person> Persons { get; set; } } We also implemented images insertion. Are there any free libraries for this task or may be you use your own MS-word templators in your projects?

  I'm looking for ideas / open source frameworks to use for creating individual Analytics for user profiles and all the other profile types. Users will have different custom metrics, businesses willl have seperate metrics, the admin section will have seperate, Advertises will have seperate, etc. So basically the goal is to have 1 framework in place for all Analytics, which will be custom user to user and even use that for the system analytic needs also. It will include data analytics as there will be user ratings/reviews to perfomr data mining on for businesses, USers will have basic reporting on their needs (like friend demographics, filter by different preferences, etc). • Advanced Data Source Engine coming to Telerik Reporting Q1 2010

  This is the final blog post from the pre-release series. In it we are going to share with you some of the updates coming to our reporting solution in Q1 2010. A new Declarative Data Source Engine will be added to Telerik Reporting, that will allow full control over data management, and deliver significant gains in rendering performance and memory consumption. Some of the engines new features will be: Data source parameters - those parameters will be used to limit data retrieved from the data source to just the data needed for the report. Data source parameters are processed on the data source side, however only queried data is fetched to the reporting engine, rather than the full data source. This leads to lower memory consumption, because data operations are performed on queried data only, rather than on all data. As a result, only the queried data needs to be stored in the memory vs. the whole dataset, which was the case with the old approach Support for stored procedures - they will assist in achieving a consistent implementation of logic across applications, and are especially practical for performing repetitive tasks. A stored procedure stores the SQL statements and logic, which can then be executed in different reports and/or applications. Stored Procedures will not only save development time, but they will also improve performance, because each stored procedure is compiled on the data base server once, and then is reutilized. In Telerik Reporting, the stored procedure will also be parameterized, where elements of the SQL statement will be bound to parameters. These parameterized SQL queries will be handled through the data source parameters, and are evaluated at run time. Using parameterized SQL queries will improve the performance and decrease the memory footprint of your application, because they will be applied directly on the database server and only the necessary data will be downloaded on the middle tier or client machine; Calculated fields through expressions - with the help of the new reporting engine you will be able to use field values in formulas to come up with a calculated field. A calculated field is a user defined field that is computed "on the fly" and does not exist in the data source, but can perform calculations using the data of the data source object it belongs to. Calculated fields are very handy for adding frequently used formulas to your reports; Improved performance and optimized in-memory OLAP engine - the new data source will come with several improvements in how aggregates are calculated, and memory is managed. As a result, you may experience between 30% (for simpler reports) and 400% (for calculation-intensive reports) in rendering performance, and about 50% decrease in memory consumption. Full design time support through wizards - Declarative data sources are a great advance and will save developers countless hours of coding. In Q1 2010, and true to Telerik Reportings essence, using the new data source engine and its features requires little to no coding, because we have extended most of the wizards to support the new functionality. The newly extended wizards are available in VS2005/VS2008/VS2010 design-time. More features will be revealed on the product's what's new page when the new version is officially released in a few days. • How would you advocate not using a shared spreadsheet to track bugs / issues ?

  In our company, the developers want to use a proper bug tracking tool to manager issues in our application. The management however insists on using a shared spreadsheet (formeerly a shared excel file, now a spreadsheet on a web base solution allowing concurrent access). Their argument is that the spreadsheet allow them to have a more highlevel view of the state of the project as they can see how many bugs are open with a quick glance. This also allow them to see who is working on each bug, and get estimation of the time required to close them all (as developer are required to fill time estimation of the bug they are working on). As you can understand, this is not really practical to use for the developers (bug tracking software were invented for a reason). So how can I advocate bug tracking software to ease the work of the developer ? As a bonus, which software would you recommend that would allow the management to be able to get their feedbacks (number of bugs opens, who is working on them, time estimation) with a high level view ?

  As of today I only knew about ubuntu-bug which I could use to report bugs about a specific program. But now I learned about apport-collect and apport-bug which basically are: apport-bug - Reports problems to launchpad using Apport to collect a lot of information about your system to help the developers fix the problem and avoid unnecessary questions and answers. apport-collect - Works as apport-bug but it send the information to an already existing bug report. In my case it was apport-collect 1060268 Thanks to Brad Figg in Launchpad. Are there any other tools to report bugs?

• Launcher disappears when Focuswriter is minimized

  This bug has to do with the integration of the full-screen writing app Focuswriter within Unity. It appeared before I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 - probably caused by a an automatically upgraded change that persist in 12.10: When I minimize Focuswriter after it has been in full-screen mode the launcher is invisible - instead of seeing it I just see a rectangle the color of my desktop background where it should have been. The launcher becomes visible if I click the area once but then I'm likely to hit an icon and unwillingly open a program. I've reported the bug to the developer of the program here: https://github.com/gottcode/focuswriter/issues/101 He has labeled the bug "upstream" saying that the bug is can only be fixed in Unity. My questions are: 1) does anyone (perhaps experiencing problems with other full-screen programs) have a solution or workaround so the launcher won't disappear? 2) where can I file a bug report for this problem?

• Reporting System architecture for better performance

  Hi, We have a product that runs Sql Server Express 2005 and uses mainly ASP.NET. The database has around 200 tables, with a few (4 or 5) that can grow from 300 to 5000 rows per day and keep a history of 5 years, so they can grow to have 10 million rows. We have built a reporting platform, that allows customers to build reports based on templates, fields and filters. We face performance problems almost since the beginning, we try to keep reports display under 10 seconds but some of them go up to 25 seconds (specially on those customers with long history). We keep checking indexes and trying to improve the queries but we get the feeling that there's only so much we can do. Off course the fact that the queries are generated dynamically doesn't help with the optimization. We also added a few tables that keep redundant data, but then we have the added problem of maintaining this data up to date, and also Sql Express has a limit on the size of databases. We are now facing a point where we have to decide if we want to give up real time reports, or maybe cut the history to be able to have better performance. I would like to ask what is the recommended approach for this kind of systems. Also, should we start looking for third party tools/platforms? I know OLAP can be an option but can we make it work on Sql Server Express, or at least with a license that is cheap enough to distribute to thousands of deployments? Thanks

• Seeking reporting or templating tool to generate large formatted PDF reports from dataset

  Say I have some data in MySQL or a big ole CSV file. I also have a report. It's a PDF, call it 100 pages long. I need to generate variations on this PDF for slices of the data. More specific example: I have a CSV file with each StackOverflow user in a row and each column contains various statistics about that user. I have a report called "Your StackOverflow Performance". Its got lots of text, always the same, but each section contains something like: "You Vs. The Average StackOverflow Poster on this metric". I want a table that appears there that has the average data, which is the same in every run of the PDF, in one column. In the second column, I want your data, which is different for each PDF/row in the CSV file/user of StackOverflow. I'm pretty sure people use things like Crystal for this? Is there something in MS SQL Server that's good for this? An open source template language? I'm not even really sure if what I need is called a 'reporting' tool (since I don't really need to do any crunching, the data in this case is being crunched by a series of scripts and SPSS, I don't need bands and subbands and so on) or 'templating'. Is there even such a thing as templating PDFs? Natch, I'd be fine with something that generates output easily scriptable to PDF, like eps, but not something like HTML. The report formatting is fussy and done and externally determined and handed down from on high. It's print-oriented, not webby. Thanks in advance.

• Reporting tool for OLAP, *not* OLTP!

  I'm looking for a control that I can put on top of an already existing OLAP star schema to allow the user to define their own "queries" and generate reports. Right now I have some predefined reports built on top of the cubes, but I'd like to allow the user to define their own criteria based on the cubes that I've created. I've found lots of products that will allow you to treat a transactional table like an OLAP cube, but nothing specifically for pre-existing cubes. EDIT: Let me be clear, I know there are countless reporting tools out there that claim to report on OLAP cubes. The problem is they all assume they are looking at transactional data and try to create their own cubes. I have tables that contain tens, if not hundreds of millions of records. Most tools crash when handling this much data, the others just run incredible slowly. I don't want a tool that is targeting the business people. I want a tool that understands what a star and snowflake schema is. I want to be able to tell it what the fact tables are and what the dimension tables are, and then creates a UI on top of them. This is an easier problem to solve for the tool vendor because I am spoon feeding them the cubes. I want to rely on the fact that cubes are a standardized pattern and I want a tool that takes advantage of this fact. I want a tool that targets developers and starts with the assumption that I actually know how to manage my data, it just needs to build pretty reports for me and not crumble under the weight of my data.

• Question about Reporting and Data Warehousing Software bundled with SQL Server 2005

  We currently use SQL Server 2005 Enterprise for our fairly large application, that has its roots in pre SQL Server 7.0. The tables are normalized and designed mainly for the application. The developers for the most part have the legacy SQL Server mindset. Only using the part of TSQL that existed back in 7.0, not using any of the new features of tsql or that are bundled with 2005. We're currently trying to build on demand reports using some crappy third party software, and will eventually try to build a data warehouse using more of the same crappy third party software (name removed to protect the guilty, don't ask I will not tell). The rationale for this was that we didn't want to spend more money to buy this additional software from Microsoft (this was not my decision, I had no input, but is my problem now). But from what I can tell is that Enterprise includes all of these tools, or am I missing something? What comes bundled with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise as far as reporting and data warehousing? Will we need to purchase anything else? is there actually anything else that can be purchased from Microsoft in this regard?

• Returning data from SQL Server reporting web service call

  Hi, I am generating a report that contains the version number. The version number is stored in the DB and retrieved/incremented as part of the report generation. The only problem is, I am calling SSRS via a web service call, which returns the generated report as a byte array. Is there any way to get the version number out of this generated report? For example to display a dialog that says "You generated Status Report, Version number 3". I tried passing in an output parameter and setting it inside the storedproc. Its modified when i execute it in sql management studio, but not in the reporting studio. Or atleast i can't seem to bind to the modified, post execution value (using expression "=Parameters!ReportVersion.Value"). Of course, I could get/increment the version number from database myself before calling the SSRS webservice and pass it along as a parameter to the Report, but that might cause concurrancy problems. On the whole, it just seems neater for the storedproc to access/generate a version number and return it to the ReportingEngine, which will generate the report with the version number and return the updated version number to the WebService client. Any thoughts/Ideas?

• Reporting Services "cannot connect to the report server database"

  We have Reporting Services running, and twice in the past 6 months it has been down for 1-3 days, and suddenly it will start working again. The errors range from not being able to view the tree root in a browser, down to being able to insert parameters on a report, but crashing before the report can generate. Looking at the logs, there is 1 error and 1 warning which seem to correspond somewhat. ERROR:Event Type: Error Event Source: Report Server (SQL2K5) Event Category: Management Event ID: 107 Date: 2/13/2009 Time: 11:17:19 AM User: N/A Computer: ******** Description: Report Server (SQL2K5) cannot connect to the report server database. This issue hasn't arisen since, maybe something out of my control has changed....
