  Let's say that we have a 5000 users in database. User row has sex column, place where he/she was born column and status (married or not married) column. How to generate a random subset (let's say 100 users) that would satisfy these conditions: 40% should be males and 60% - females 50% should be born in USA, 20% born in UK, 20% born in Canada, 10% in Australia 70% should be married and 30% not. These conditions are independent, that is we cannot do like this: (0.4 * 0.5 * 0.7) * 100 = 14 users that are males, born in USA and married (0.4 * 0.5 * 0.3) * 100 = 6 users that are males, born in USA and not married. Is there an algorithm to this generation?

• Website content hosted with Google. Good or bad?

  I recently decided to host my styles.css and various scripts on Google Docs and link them into my website. I also have all my images hosted through Picasa so that they too will load much faster and consistently across users. My site has most of its traffic from Japan, Africa, and South America, so I assume there will be a performance boost for my users since my server is hosted in Hong Kong. I (in Canada) have measured my load times to be half of what they used to be. Basically it's a free CDN for my personal stuff. I'm not too sure about all of this yet, so here's my question: what are the caveats of this setup?

• 2 sites each in a different country with 1 set of content (cloaking)

  Hi, I have a question re: cloaking. I have a friend who has a business in Canada and the UK. Currently the .ca site is hosted on Godaddy. The co.uk domain is registered (with uk ip address) with domainmonster and is using a cloaked/framed redirect to the .ca site. As a result (my assumption) the .ca site is indexed fine by google, the .co.uk is not. The content is generic for both sites. How do I point the .co.uk site directly to the content independently (preferably without duplicating the content hosting in the UK), so that for instance if the .ca domain was taken away altogether the .co.uk domain would remain an entity in itself from Google's point of view? Does Google index a generic set of content and then associate different country domains with that content? I hope I have explained this ok. Thanks, Greg

• jQuery autosuggest example

  I need to implement an "autosuggest" feature on our site but it needs to re-query the on every keystroke after a certain number of keys (like every character after 2 it would need to query again). So the result isn't a limiting search. For example, the autocomplete plugins I've seen work like the following: [looking for a county] 1. customer types 'CA' and the first result would return 'Canada', 'Cambodia', and 'Camaroon' 2. customer continues to type and hits 'M' the new results would query within the only the existing 3 results (producing results of just 'Cambodia' and 'Camaroon') I need a solution that would be the equivalent of querying my datasource on each keystroke. I already have the ajax call that will return my results based on the "typed" params. For example (in the above example), it would need to make an ajax call passing 'ca' first and if the customer kept typing passing 'can' on the 3 character and so forth. Thanks.

US for example. <select id="countries"> <option value="US">United States</option> <option value="EN">England</option> <option value="AU">Australia</option> <option value="CA">Canada</option> etc. </select> What's the best practice to add "selected" to the option of the users country code? I'm against adding a million if's. Also note, the countries are harcoded in HTML, so no array. :(

  I'm using HTML5 geolocation to collect the users lat / long and I need to figure out what their postal code is as well. I have a database of all the lat / long for each postal code in the US & Canada. How can I write a query to find out what their postal code is? Below, is an example of how the data is structured in the 'zips' table. Country PostalCode Latitude Longitude USA 0051 40.813078 -73.046388 USA 00616 18.426456 -66.673779 I can't do a 'SELECT PostalCode FROM zips WHERE Latitude = user.lat AND Longitude = user.long'. I believe I need to find the nearest lat / long. Any suggestions on how I can write this?

• Bringing specific results to the front using one MySQL query.

  I'm setting up my geolocation feature which lists out all the countries in order of name. However, most websites have it set up where the popular countries (such as United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia) are at the front of the list (are shown first rather than in their assigned places). Is it possible to achieve this using the same MySQL query that I am already running to select them? SELECT * FROM `global_flags` ORDER BY `country` Is there a better alternative somewhere? Perhaps something that can reorganize the results after the database has already been queried? I don't want to exclude those results and then manually type them at the beginning because that would waste more space in the file.

• My iPhone app has been downloaded by people all over the world, but has no use to anyone outside of

  I wrote a basic free app for the bus schedule in my American university's town which was accepted into the app store on Saturday. Since then the app has been downloaded (assuming I'm reading the iTunes Connect reports right) 18 times in Canada, 6 times in Germany, and many times from other places all over the world. I can't figure out why all these people are downloading it... are there services automatically downloading free apps for some purpose that I can't even imagine? Should I put a price on it ASAP?

• Determine outer boundries of polygon from lat/lng point array

  I have a large array of lat/lng points. Could be up to 20k points. I'm plotting them using KML. What I want to do is to take only the outter most points and use them to draw a polygon instead. I already know how to draw a polygon in kml, I just need to figure out how to select only the outer most points of the group. Any ideas? I'd like to have at least 5 points to the polygon but no more than 25 points total. So far i've come up with checking for top most and bottom most points (basically crearing a square) using < & logic. The points will be in america & canada only if that matters. Thanks for any help.

They’ll be talking up Windows 8.1 (Windows Blue), more Azure, some Windows Phone, XBox, Office 365… actually, they told us on the original BUILD announcement site what we’d be seeing:           While looking at this, consider a recent article from The Verge that talks about the speculation of a huge shake up at Microsoft . From the article: All Things D quotes one insider as saying they're "titanic" changes, noting they might be attached to Ballmer's legacy at the company. "It’s the first time in a long time that it feels like that there will be some major shifts, including some departures," says the alleged insider. Considering Ballmer let Sinofsky go right after the Windows 8 launch, the idea of Microsoft cutting loose some executives doesn’t seem to be big news. But the next piece of the article frames things more interestingly: Ballmer is reportedly considering a new structure that would create four separate divisions: enterprise business, hardware, applications and services, and an operating systems group. This statement got me thinking…what would this new structure look like? Below is one possibility: At a recent (this year or last year, I can’t recall which) Microsoft shareholder’s meeting, Ballmer made the statement that Microsoft is now a products and services company. At the time I don’t think I really let that statement sink in. Partially because I really liked the Microsoft of my professional youth – the one that was a software and platform company. In Canada, Microsoft has been pushing three platform areas: Lync, Azure, and SQL Server. I would expect those to change moving forward as Microsoft continues to look for Partners that will help them increase their Services revenue through solutions that incorporate/are based on Azure, Office 365, Lync, and Dynamics. I also wonder if we’re not seeing a culling of partners through changes to the Microsoft Partner Program. In addition to the changing certification requirements that align more to Microsoft’s goals (i.e. There is no desktop development based MCSD, only Windows 8 Store Apps), competencies that partners can qualify for are being merged, requirements changed, and licenses provided reduced. Ballmer warned as much at the last WPC though that they were looking for partners who were “all in” with Microsoft, and these programs seem to support that sentiment. Heading into BUILD this week, I’ll be looking to answer one question – what does it mean to be a Microsoft developer here in the 2010’s? What is the future of the Microsoft development platform? Sure, Visual Studio is still alive and well and Microsoft realizes that there’s a huge install base of .NET developers actively working on solutions. But they’ve ratcheted down the messaging around their development stack and instead focussed on promoting development for their platforms and services. Last year at BUILD with the release of Windows 8, Microsoft just breached the walls of its cocoon. After this BUILD and the organizational change announcements in July, we’ll see what Microsoft looks like fully emerged from its metamorphosis.

  This year the Oracle Retail users conference, Crosstalk, had a 20% increase in attendees, which was driven by both new customers and those acquired via Endeca.  As the product assets of Oracle have grown, so has the completeness of the solution set.  This year was marked by the breadth of omni-channel stories. Rose Spicer and her marketing team (see photo on left) always strive for an equal balance of retailer presentations, networking opportunities, and unique experiences -- this year was no exception.  We had 41 different retailers from China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, US, Canada and the UK sharing their insights with one another. In all there were 251 executives from 120 iconic brands such as Daphne, Kohl's, Morrisons, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hot Topic, Talbots, Petco, Deckers, Sportmaster, Mr. Price, Falabella, and Disney to name a few. From a product perspective, there were a few new developments from Oracle Retail: Endeca's search engine has been integrated into the ATG commerce platform. The latest Retail Analytics application, Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, is generally available. Oracle Retail previewed a new fully-integrated mobile POS. But the real benefit of attending Crosstalk was hearing about the experiences of retailers and partners.  Here are are a few interesting facts I picked up: At Kohl's, the most popular website accessed by customers within their stores is Facebook.  With all the buzz about showrooming, I was really expecting it to be Amazon. Daphne, a Chinese shoe retailer, is opening 3 new stores per day.  Being located near the factories allows them to have a very agile supply chain as well. Disney Stores have increased sales by 25% at stores upgraded to include Mobile POS.  They continue to lead the pack with excellent customer experiences. Quicksilver reported that 1 in 5 visits to their website comes from a tablet.  More evidence that tablets are replacing traditional PCs in households. By tagging shoes with RFID, Saks is able to ensure all shoe models are on display.  If a model is not being displayed, it has no chance of being sold. Additionally, there were awards, store tours on Michigan Avenue, fireworks at Navy Pier, and the Oracle Retail house band, Bolo313, performing at Solider Field.  Speaking of which, a few retailers got on stage and jammed with band -- possible rival to Rock & Roll Retail?   Two important changes to the Oracle Lifetime Support policies for Oracle E-Business Suite were announced at OpenWorld last week.  These changes affect EBS Releases 11i and 12.1. The changes are detailed in this My Oracle Support document: E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 (Note 1495337.1) 1. Changes for EBS 11i Sustaining Support The first change is that  we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: New fixes for Severity 1 production issues United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates Payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014 Customers environments must have the minimum baseline patches (or above) for new Severity 1 production bug fixes as documented here: Patch Requirements for Extended Support of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (Note 883202.1) 2. Changes for EBS 12.1 Extended Support More time:  Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended by nineteen months through December, 2018. But given the slow uptake of Linq on other data access technologies outside of Entity Framework, what advantage does this provide over working directly with the DbContext? I attempted to write a PetaPoco version of the Repository, but PetaPoco doesn't support Linq Expressions, which makes creating a generic IRepository interface pretty much useless unless you only use it for the basic GetAll, GetById, Add, Update, Delete, and Save methods and utilize it as a base class. Then you have to create specific repositories with specialized methods to handle all the "where" clauses that I could previously pass in as a predicate. Is the Generic Repository pattern useful for anything outside of Entity Framework? If not, why would someone use it at all instead of working directly with Entity Framework?   Before joining Oracle as Product Manager for WebLogic and GlassFish for Latin America, at the beggining of this year I proposed two talks to JavaOne USA that I had been presenting in Brazil for quite a while. One of them I presented last year at ApacheCon in Vancouver, Canada as well in JavaOne Brazil. In June I got the news that they were accepted as Alternate Sessions. Surprisingly enough, few weeks later and at the same time I joined Oracle, I received the news that they were officially accepted and put on schedule. • I had a power outage. Now MySQL's lock file won't go away. What do you suggest?

  I do freelance IT consulting for various clients, both in Toronto, Canada, and worldwide. A client recently experienced a power failure. Now they've been having various problems with a Slackware 12.0.0 machine which also acts as a DNS server. One problem is that they can't log into phpMyAdmin. I tried stopping and restarting MySQL. But even when MySQL is stopped, the lock file stays around. jasonspiro@cybertron:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop Shutting down MySQL. SUCCESS! jasonspiro@cybertron:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop ERROR! MySQL manager or server PID file could not be found! jasonspiro@cybertron:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql status ERROR! MySQL is not running, but lock exists jasonspiro@cybertron:~$ ls -l /var/lock/subsys/mysql -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2012-07-05 16:18 /var/lock/subsys/mysql Why is MySQL's lock file hanging around despite the fact that MySQL isn't running? Can I simply stop MySQL, delete the lock file, and start MySQL again? Are there any other steps that I should take next, or nothing?

• 2008 Sever Randomly reboots.

  I'm out of ideas here. We have a 2008 Server that keeps rebooting 2-3 times a day at completely random times with an "Unexpected Shutdown" event. There are no Dumps, no events leading to it just like it loses power then comes back online. I ran a Diagnostic of the power supply and it has had continuous power for months. In addition, the temperature of the processors are maxing out at 40 degrees Celsius. Anyone have any ideas how to figure out why this is restarting all the time? This is a DMZed Web server so it doesn't do too much process wise. • Some HTTPS connections via NAT fail, but work on firewall itself.

  Hi, I am having trouble establishing some HTTPS connections from internal machines, even though these same connections work if initiated on the firewall itself. The firewall machine is running Ubuntu 10.04.1 and shorewall 4.4.6. The internet connection is Bell PPPoE DSL (in Canada). I have tried various MTU settings, it doesn't seem to make any difference. Other protocols (HTTP, FTP, etc) generally work. • VCL - configuration for Magento and Varnish 3.0.2

  I would like to kindly ask if there's someone who can help me configure Varnish for Magento to reach far more hits. My current ratio from varnishstat is: cache_hit=271 cache_miss=926 I'm kindly asking this because I've googled almost every site related to this theme, but 99.9% of configurations don't work because of outdated code. Details of my set-up: I use Varnish on port 80, Apache on port 81, PageCache as Magento varnish module, APC for PHP speed and Memcached for dynamic caching. Load speed is about 1.5s on home-page (Pingdom.com average results) USA ping & 2.5s Europe. Servers are located in Toronto, Canada. • How to connect via SSH to a linux mint system that is connected via OpenVPN

  Is there a way to make SSH port not get sent through VPN so when my computer is connected to a VPN, it can still be remoted in via SSH from its non-VPN IP? I am using Mint Linux 13. Thank you for your help! This is the instructions I followed to setup the VPN: Open Terminal Type: sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn Press Y to continue. Type: sudo restart network-manager Download BTGuard certificate (CA) by typing: sudo wget -O /etc/openvpn/btguard.ca.crt http://btguard.com/btguard.ca.crt Click on the Network Manager icon, expand VPN Connections, and choose Configure VPN A Network Connections window will appear with the VPN tab open. Click Add. 8. A Choose A VPN Connection Type window will open. Select OpenVPN in the drop-down menu and click Create.. . In the Editing VPN connection window, enter the following: Connection name: BTGuard VPN Gateway: vpn.btguard.com Optional: Manually select your server location by using ca.vpn.btguard.com for Canada or eu.vpn.btguard.com for Germany. • different user group can not upload file in the server

  I have a CentOS server running in Thailand, and I'm in Canada. The guy at the computer center who set up the server for me doesn't really understand much about linux and left me off an issue to solve myself. I just moved from Mac Server to Linux server, and the first thing I'm facing a problem now is `file name` has failed to upload due to an error The uploaded file could not be moved to `location name` So what happen is that I knew from my experiences of these problem is all about permissions. So I go ahead and checked on my whole folder and found that everything in the folder permission is like myusername mygroupname then I checked the httpd file in the server and it is default to apache apache. My question is that how can I make my user to be in the same group with apache group so that I don't have to have any problem about uploading, changing data in my file....? But without having to affect other user in the same server. I'm holding Administrator account, but not root account, but I can change stuff on the server root no problem. When I was with godaddy.com there never been any problem about the permission and I wish I know how they configure that :(
