  • DIA2012

    If you've read this blog before, you probably know that Oracle desktop virtualization is used to demonstrate Oracle Applications at many different trade shows. This week, the Oracle desktop team is at DIA2012 in Philadelphia, PA. The DIA conference is a large event, hosting about 7,000 professionals in the pharmaceutical, bio technology, and medical device fields. Healthcare and associated fields are leveraging desktop virtualization because the model is a natural fit due to their high security requirements. Keeping all the data on the server and not distributing it on laptops or PCs that could be stolen makes a lot of sense when you're talking about patient records and other sensitive information.     Happy Friday, everyone! Following up on yesterday's post about Oracle VM VirtualBox being selected as the best virtualization solution for 2012 by the readers of Linux Journal, our Friday tip is about that very cool piece of software: Question: How do I move a VM from one machine to another with Oracle VM VirtualBox? Answer by Andy Hall, Product Management Director, Oracle Desktop Virtualization: There are a number of ways to do this, with pros and cons for each. The most reliable approach is to Export and Import virtual machines: From the VirtualBox manager, simply use the File…Export appliance menu and follow the wizard's lead. Move the resulting file(s) to the destination machine; and Import the VM into VirtualBox. This method will take longer and use more disk space than other methods because the configuration files and virtual hard drives are converted into an industry standard format (.ova or .ovf). But an advantage of this approach is that the creator of the virtual appliance can add a license which the importer will see and click-to-accept at import time. This is especially useful for ISVs looking to deliver pre-built, configured and tested appliances to their customers and prospects. Thanks Andy!   • Perth's ADF Community Event now an open invite

    Yesterday saw the next ADF Community Event in Perth, and as promised we grew from 15 to 25 attendees (which is going to cause a bit of a problem soon if we keep growing as we're going to run out of powerpoints for laptops). This bimonthly enjoyed presentations from Matthew Carrigy from the Dept of Finance WA on the ADF UI Shell, a small presentation from me about how Fusion Apps uses ADF, and a hands on based on programatically extending ADF BC to call external web services.  For Matt, his first presentation to a user group, with two live demos, all kudos to him for making it look smooth (for the record I hate live demos, I always break something) - thank you Matt! We've already lined up our speakers for the next event in November, and will be inviting yet more customers to this event.  However the event will now move to an open invite, so if you'd like your staff to attend please let me know by emailing chris DOT muir AT oracle DOT com. Alternatively I've had a fair few requests now for an "Intro to ADF" 1 day session so I'll consider this soon.  Certainly if you're interested let me know as this will help organize the event earlier rather than later.

  • Friday Tips #6, Part 2

    Here is a question about updating Oracle VM: Question: How can I perform Oracle VM 3 server updates from Oracle VM Manager? Answer by Gregory King, Principal Best Practices Consultant, Oracle VM Product Management: Server Update Manager is a built-in feature of the Oracle VM Manager. Basically, Server Update Manager automatically configures YUM updates on all the Oracle VM Servers, pointing each to our Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) update channel for Oracle VM. The servers periodically check with our Oracle YUM repository and notify the Oracle VM Manager that an update is available for each server. Actual server updates must be triggered by the Oracle VM administrator – they are not executed automatically. At this point, you can use the Oracle VM Manager to put a server into maintenance mode which live migrates all the running Oracle VM Guests to other Oracle VM Servers in the server pool. Once all the Oracle VM Guests have been migrated, the Oracle VM administrator can trigger the update on the server. The entire process is documented in the Installation and Upgrade Guide of Oracle VM Documentation so I won’t spend time detailing the steps. However, configuring the Server Update Manager is exceedingly simple. Simply navigate to the Tools and Resources tab in the Oracle VM Manager, select the link for Server Update Manager and ensure the following values are added to the text boxes as shown in the illustration below: YUM Base URL: http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleVM/OVM3/latest/x86_64 YUM GPG Key: file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle Every server in the pool will be automatically configured for YUM updates once you choose the Apply button.   • Multiple vlan issue with procurve switch

    I have a cisco asa5505 as my rtr/fw(10.1.3.254). I have vlan 1 and vlan 3. Vlan 1 is my default all access vlan. Vlan 3 is my Guest(dmz) vlan. I can't seem to get a dhcp ip address when my laptop is plugged into port 42 on my procurve. I have plugged my laptop directly into the firewall and it gets a dhcp ip fine(the firewall is dhcp server). the firewall is plugged into port 41. Only vlan3 needs to go over port 41. I'm sure I have a bonehead config problem however I'm about ready to pull out what little hair I have left. vlan 1 name "Computers" forbid 45 untagged 1-41,43-44 ip helper-address 10.1.1.16 ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0 tagged 46-48 no untagged 42,45 exit vlan 3 name "Guest Wireless" ip helper-address 10.1.3.254 ip address 10.1.3.1 255.255.255.0 tagged 41-42,44-48 exit

  • How to get used of trackpoint on a thinkpad?

    Recently my shoulder hurts due to frequently arm movement switching between keyboard and mouse. Then I start using trackpoint. The problem is, while everyone saying the trackpoint is more accurate than touchpad, I find it very hard to accurately move the cursor using trackpoint. Large movements are ok, but when it comes to fine movements, such as click a close button or check a checkbox, it takes longer time. Should I just practice more, or are there any good tips or tutorials around?

  • Hypervisor load on local disks

    Hi, What is the I/O load on the local disk system for the host OS in XenServer ? I can't find this info anywhere. As we have a SAN for the VMs themselves, can we get away with cheap controller / SATA disk in raid-1 for the hypervisor ? We won't boot from the SAN as it seems prone to problems. Thanks, Chris

  • Strange failure audit in 2003 R2 X64 SP2

    our server is running 2003 R2 X64 SP2, we keep seeing this in clusters of around 4 rapid fire. Sometimes 2 hours, sometimes around 8 hours apart with slight variations. I am also seeing the same blank username and domain in an account locked out message, I have tried disabling all scheduled tasks, if anyone has any idea please let me know! I find these processes running out of svc host: AeLookupSvc, AppMgmt, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, dmserver, EventSystem, helpsvc, IAS, lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, Netman, Nla, RasMan, Schedule, seclogon, SENS, SharedAccess, ShellHWDetection, winmgmt, wuauserv, WZCSVC Logon Failure: Reason: Account currently disabled User Name: Domain: Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: Authz Authentication Package: Kerberos Workstation Name: PPCLUBES_TS Caller User Name: PPCLUBES_TS$ Caller Domain: PPCLUBES Caller Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E7) Caller Process ID: 928 Transited Services: - Source Network Address: - Source Port: -

  • Google Chrome on Mac OS X, full screen option is greyed out, why?

    When I first installed Chrome the menu option for "full screen" was enabled and worked, but for the last few months is been greyed out/disabled. Is it just me or perhaps there is a bug which is why its disabled? I tried deleting the installed version and downloading a new copy, to no avail - but perhaps there is a setting in my local preferences that could be disabling it. Thanks in advance, Chris

  • Having trouble getting startup scripts to work in Server 2003

    Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am having trouble getting my startup scripts to run correctly on the domain I am administering. Before anyone gets upset and says "go read xxx article from microsoft",... I have. I am simply missing something or not understanding it properly. I understand how to assign the script, what I am curious about is where exactly it should be placed in the Windows folder structure. I have been able to get them to work by creating a share folder called "scripts" and pointing to that exact unc pathname IE \servername\scripts\xxx.bat. However, I would like to do it properly, would someone please tell me where they should be placed in Win2003 server, and what the path name should be when assigning a group policy to do something that applies to computer specific properties? Your assistance is very much appreciated by a junior admin trying to learn some new tricks!

  • vmware windows7 professional changing ip addresses

    is there a way to fix your windows 7 professional guest host os ipaddress so it does not change every time you startup? I am currently using NAT for networking and would like to remain using this networking method if possible. In older versions of windows this never used to be a problem in vmware so I am wondering if I am missing a setting in windows 7 professional or in vmware. thank you for your help, chris

  • Outlook 2007 Clients attachments not opening correctly

    Hello, Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are having an issue on our Terminal Server clients that has me perplexed. We are running Server2003 x64 and Exchange 2007 environment. When we attempt to open an attachment for example .jpeg and the user selects to open the file, it prompts them to select a program to open the file with. The file associations apear to be fine, if I save the document to the desktop and open it, it opens with the correct program automatically. If i select "always open using this program" it will then open automatically, but I don't want to have to do this for all file types we open regularly on each client. Is this some sort of Exchange server security setting that is forcing them to associate the file? Does outlook or exchange maintain its own file association database? Thanks for reading!

  • Server 2003 Functional Domain DFS Replication Problem (Files being moved to conflicted folder for no reason)

    We have 2 Windows 2003 servers configured with a DFS namespace and we are running into problems with the redirected profiles we have setup. Basically, one server is the FSMO master for all roles, and we have another DC that is the DFS namespace primary server. We have profile redirection setup using the \dfsnamespace\userprofile formula. The FSMO master DC locks up occasionally (don't ask :), and when it does, and we bring it back up... All of the user profiles hosted on the DFS namespace get overwritten when a user logs in. The current profile gets moved to the conflicting and deleted items folder. This strikes me as really odd considering the whole point of using DFS was to provide some redundancy in case one server went down. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance! -Nate

  • Slowness on Exchange 2007 Server (network related we think)

    We are seeing some odd behavior out of our exchange 2007 server. I believe it is network related as during the slowness in response from the exchange server. During these times downloading files to server is fraught with connection resets and extreme slow download speeds that are not affecting other servers right on the same subnet with the same gateway and ISP. We have about 50 users at a time using Outlook 2003 from a terminal server not displaying any other signs of slowness, all network slowness is confirmed trying downloads on the exchange server itself. Checked for virus issues, there are none. Checked for hardware issues, none found I am noticing between 200-400 TCPv4 connections established I am seeing around 100k tcpv4(active) connections according to perfmon are these numbers odd? Has anyone run into anything similar? Our server has a gigbabit NIC linked to a gigabit switch using cat6 so I do not believe it is "physical". Thanks!

  • User unable to delete folder / files "File in use by another user" Server 2003

    I am administering a standalone Windows 2003 Terminal Server with no domain membership. Occasionally (about once a week or so) a user will attempt to delete a sub-folder in a Shared folder and gets denied with "File in use by another user". I tried checking the shared folder snap-in and that folder is not open. She has full control and is the owner of the folder as well. I even checked in "Effective permissions" for some of the folders / files she cant delete and she truly has full control. I am able to delete the folder as Administrator with no problem. Another odd thing, she can delete the files IN the folder most of the time (this issue happens on both folders and files in the share). Sometimes merely waiting a day or two will allow her to delete the folder or files. I am curious as to why she gets the message that it is in use as creator/owner with full control yet I don't get it simply as a member of the Admin group. If anyone out there has any ideas I'd love to hear them! THANK YOU.

  • How to use USB Key in Xen 5.6 Environment?

    I am looking for a way to use USB key on a guest OS running on a 5.6 Xen Server environment. The catch is that I need to actually detect in the Guest OS (Win2003 Server) like an actual USB Key. Attaching it as a storage drive doesnt work (It is a key with special attributes that servers as a licensing mechanism). Just wondering if anyone has had a similar need and found a good solution?   • Remote location's status "Disconnected", how to keep it connected (OK)? [net-use-command]

    I have an script that keeps running, under some scenarios, it needs to contact a server (\\us-sign). From time to time, if this server remains uncontacted for a while, the next time my script needs it, it will ask for my credentials. What I found is that, after such thing happening and using net use, such server will be displayed as disconnected. if I type "net use \\us-sign", it won't ask me neither user nor password, what makes me believe, my credentials for such server are still "valid", nonetheless, its status will remain "disconnected". This script is supposed to help us automate some procedures, but the need to keep a watch on it shall it request for credentials, it kind of defeats the purpose. How can I keep its status "OK" no matter how long it is not being contacted?

  • Harddrive speed drops a lot!

    The hard drive is used to do BT with uTorrent. Recently uTorrent began to report there is a "I/O Device error", then I use HD Tune to test it, it turns out the transfer rate is only 16 MB/sec. At the same time, I have a similar hard drive tested, it rates as 120 MB/sec. They are both 7200rpm desktop hard drives. I used chkdsk to fix it but the rate didn't change. Is this a symptom of hard drive failure? Should I backup the content on the disk ASAP or is there any other tool can fix it or diagnosis it?`

Now I want to create a separate web app on my VPS and let it accessible via app.example.com How can I set the DNS to redirect app.example.com to my VPS' ip address? CNAME or A Record? Also, If I want to do a mail server on my VPS too, how to setup the DNS? EDIT: Existing site: www.example.com Location: some hosting company that I don't control. It's running PHP with nginx I guess (or aphache) New site (that I'm working on): app.example.com Location: my VPS, it has an IP address, the VPS is running nodejs. It can run along with nginx but currently it's not. I want the existing website continue working (as customer visit www.example.com) and I want customer to visit app.example.com for some new features. The two websites are NOT on the same server and not using the same IP address.

    Today is the big day, the day I attempt to use Ajax in the app… I’ve never done this (well, tell a lie, I’ve done it in a ‘tutorial’ site, but that was a while ago now), so it’s going to be interesting.. OK, basics first, let’s start with the @Ajax.ActionLink Right, first stab: @Ajax.ActionLink("Click to get latest", "LatestEntry", new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "ajaxEntrant", InsertionMode = InsertionMode.Replace, HttpMethod = "GET" }) As far as I’m aware, I’m asking to get the ‘LatestEntry’ from the current controller, and in doing so, I will replace the #ajaxEntrant DOM bit with the result. So. I guess I’d better get the result working… To the controller! public PartialResult LatestEntry() { var entrant =_db.Entrants.OrderByDescending(e => e.Id).Single(); return PartialView("_Entrant", entrant); } Pretty simple, just returns the last entry in a PartialView… but! I have yet to make my partial view, so onto that! @model Webby.Entrant <div class="entrant"> <h4>@Model.Name</h4> </div> Again, super simple, (I’m really just testing at this point)… All the code is now there (as far as I know), so F5 and in… And once again, in the traditionally disappointing way of the norm, it doesn’t work, sure… it opens the right view, but it doesn’t replace the #ajaxEntry DOM element, rather it replaces the whole page… The source code (again, as far as I know) looks ok: <a data-ajax="true" data-ajax-method="GET" data-ajax-mode="replace" data-ajax-update="#ajaxEntrants" href="/Entrants/LatestEntrant">Click to get latest</a> Changing the InsertionMode to any of the other modes has the same effect.. It’s not the DOM name either, changing that has the same effect.. i.e. none. It’s not the partial view either, just making that a <p> has (again) no effect… Ahhhhh --- what a schoolboy error… I had neglected (ahem) to actually put the script bit into the calling page (another save from stackoverflow): <script src="@Url.Content("~/Scripts/jquery.unobtrusive-ajax.js")" type="text/javascript"></script> I’ve now stuck that into the _Layout.cshtml view temporarily to aid the development process… :) Onwards and upwards!
