  • Java 8 for Tablets, Pis, and Legos at Silicon Valley JUG - 8/20/2014

    A bunch of people attended the Silicon Valley Java Users Group meeting last night and saw Stephen Chin talk about "Java 8 for Tablets, Pis, and Legos". I was there and thought Stephen's presentation and demos were very cool as always. Here are some photos (mostly taken by Arun) from last night. See: Photos from SV JUG 8/20/2014 The most interesting combination of the topics from last night (to me at least) is to combine Lambdas from Java SE Embedded 8 with running on an embedded device like the Raspberry Pi, or even better on an i.MX6 target device with a quad-core processor.   • Silverlight: Creating great UIs

    I was always told I was left brained and could not draw. And I bought into that view. Somewhere down the road years ago I did learn to play guitar and to play by ear at that.  Now that’s not all left brained so my right brain must be working.  About a year ago, my good friend Billy Hollis turned me own to a book by Betty Edwards (http://www.drawright.com/).  I started reading this and soon I found my self drawing on napkins in restaurants while we were waiting on food and at many other times too.  Dang’d if I could not draw!   • UI Design Patterns : Are you developing a Fusion Apps extension, an ADF or Webcenter App?

    A big question I get asked when speaking to partners who are developing Oracle ADF, or Webcenter, Apps is how to make it look nice.. Some of the big SIs ask me, "Do we have any design patterns/guidelines we can use?". .. Alas website design is a very personal thing and each website will have different requirements and needs, however I am now pleased to say we've just launched "Oracle Fusion Applications Design Patterns" website.   The website is the result of many years of Oracle R&D into user interface design for Fusion applications and features a really cool web app which allows you to visualise the UI components in action. Although many of the design patterns are related to ADF , its worth noting that ADF took its lead from Oracle Fusion Applications User Interface needs - not the other way around, its just taken us a while to publish these.   • What shall I include in a 10 week web technologies course?

    In September I will be teaching a university module on web technologies. This session will be available to 1st year (freshman) students who don't necessarily have any programming knowledge or know how the web works. In the 2nd semester I will be teaching Flash, which is my specialism, so I know exactly what I am going to teach, but in the 1st semester I will be teaching them web standards technologies - HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery, PHP and MySQL. Where I need advice is how to proportion the emphasis for each part, and which parts of each technology to cover. Another real issue I'm struggling with is how much of the bad old ways should I teach them? Do they need to know about bold as well as strong, etc. UPDATE: based, on your feedback I will only be teaching the latest version of everything - CSS3, HTML5 etc. I'm not sure exactly how long the semester will be but I'm guessing about 10-12 weeks. Each session is a 2 hour lab. Obviously there's only so much I can cover in that time and it will be up to the students to go a research this stuff properly on W3 schools etc. My ideas so far were: Lesson 0 - Course intro and overview of the current tech landscape. What is out there, what will we be learning, what won't we. What is a web server, URL etc. Looking at different example websites and discussing how they work. Lesson 1 - HTML basics (head, body, title, img, table, a, lists, h1, strong etc) Lesson 2 - CSS for styling and layout - fonts, webfonts, float etc Lesson 3 - Intro to programming JS (variables, loops, conditionals, functions) Lesson 4 - more JS programming fundamentals, DOM manipulation Lesson 5 - jQuery - making things fly about and look cool Lesson 6 - XML and Ajax Lesson 7 - PHP basics - syntax, server-side principles Lesson 8 - PHP and MySQL - forms, logins, saving user info Lesson 9 - don't know Lesson 10 - don't know Please let me know if you think this is the right order, what have I missed, how to use any spare sessions etc. Thanks :) UPDATE BASED ON RESPONSES: Thanks for all your responses - some great stuff. To be absolutely clear, this is not a computer science course, it is a practical module on a creative technology course. The emphasis definitely has to be on making cool things work rather than understanding how the backbone of the internet works. That can come later, if the students are interested. At the end of the module I would like the students to be able to produce a web page or pages that does something cool, using some or all of the technologies I cover. Many of these topics are of course far beyond the scope of a 2 hour session, however I do not have the option of reducing the syllabus, I will just have to explain what the technology does and encourage the student to research it in their own time.

  • How to run Java application in KDE with Qt-like UI?

    Continuing my question in Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu? I have tried Kubuntu (KDE), and it was very cool as cool as Ubuntu (GNOME). but there is little problem with its user interface when we start Java application (LimeWire, Netbeans, Eclipse). User interface changed to Metal, (which I think is a bit old school). Can we run it with Qt like UI?, such as when we start Java application in Gnome (run with GTK like UI/emulation GTK like UI)? I hear there is a class for Java in order to make Java application UI like Qt, called the Qt/Jambi bindings for Java. How can we integrate it in KDE when we start Java application? My other question is if not wrong, OpenOffice was built in Java,so why OpenOffice can run with Qt like UI in KDE?

    My work just started (a couple of months ago actually) allowing us access to our MSDN subscriptions.  This is totally cool.  I’ve been begging, borrowing, and stealing all these years to have access to Visual Studio and the other tools.  Now, I’ve got them all.  It is totally cool.  What’s even cooler is that I’m going to be installing them (along with a brandy spanky new Windows 7 installation) on a MacBook or MacBookPro in the coming weeks.  How’s that for most excellent?

  • Bumblebee optirun appears to depend on Intel

    I have a Lenovo T420 with Intel and Nvidia graphics. On upgrade to Ubuntu Saucy, I had to purge and reinstall bumblebee-nvidia to get beyond optirun failing to find a GPU driver. Now, "optirun glxgears" and "optirun sol" succeed, but optirun fails on 2 Virtual Life viewers that it supported in the past, Cool VL (CoolVLViewer-1.26.8.34-Linux-x86) and Imprudence (Imprudence 1.4.0 beta2). In both cases, the error output is huge, but it starts with libGL error: failed to load driver: i965 and libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast From the little I can discover, i965 is an Intel graphics driver, which should not be invoked at all. I haven't found any information about swrast. I suspect that some of the X configuration associated with Bumblebee has some Intel dependence that is invoked on certain library calls, but not others. I haven't discovered any definite information on this line. The Cool VL Viewer runs without optirun, but complains about the insufficiency of the Intel graphics.

  • I will be at NNUG Kristiansand tonight

    SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Greetings! I will be speaking at NNUG Kristiansand tonight (sorry for the very short notice). So I was thinking what should I demo tonight?Hmm!!!Instead of using any slides or such material, what I thought would be a tonne of fun, would be to develop a service bus based application running in Azure. This will be a good opportunity to code and talk, and run into some snafus and show off some VS2012 improvements/annoyances. At the end of an apprx. 1 hour talk, I hope to have an application ready that you can run yourself by the end of the evening. hehe :) .. now that’s cool isn’t it? :) ..     Hot dog. IE 9 just hit the download sites this week. I have been running it for a few days and its really sweet. It seems much faster than IE 8 and many other browsers and its got lots of cool features. Some of the ones I really like are: New tab format with one click creation and putting them up top. Cleaner UI Ability to drag a tab off the tab bar and have a new window created Integrated address / search box Support for HTML 5   check out http://www.beautyoftheweb.com/ to see some of the cool features. Pay attention to the HTML 5 samples too. And theres lots more as its just getting off the ground. You can download it from Microsoft. Or you can get the version with hooks into bing and msn. Enjoy.

  • How to do a Windows 7 Image restore to an external drive?

    I have a system that I have done a Windows 7 Image restore on. I would like to migrate that image to a different hard drive. Is there a way to restore the image to an externally connected hard drive? For example: I have 3 hard drives: The first in the source machine (the one I want to copy). The second in a machine that I want to do the work. And the third is not in a machine. It is the target that I want to overwrite with the contents of the first. I boot up a 2nd machine and connect the 3rd hard drive externally (using some cool cables I have). I then use some cool feature of Windows 7 to replace what is on the 3rd hard drive with the windows 7 image of my 1st machine (that is on on my networked backup server). I need to know what the above mentioned "cool feature of windows 7" is, if there is one. And how to use it. Any ideas? Note: that I very much so don't want it to overwrite what is on the 2nd machine/hard drive.

I'm really just trying to figure out where to hang the classes/modules/methods in the framework and whit kind of object |p| should be. My first inclination was to create a PageBuilder class that implements header, body and sidebar methods. But I got stuck on the rendering pipeline to get everything output just right. Is there a gem that already provides this type of semantic generation? If not I'd love any insight on how to set this up.

    I'd like for any url that doesn't hit an existing file, to do a lookup on the other possible cases and see if those files exist, and if so, 302 to them. If that's not possible, then I'm ok with these compromises: Only check the lowercase version Only check the first path portion For example http://example.com/CoOl/PaTH/CaMELcaSE should redirect to http://example.com/cool/path/camelCase (assuming the latter exists). but of course a full solution is much more useful to me and others

    Um - I feel like an idiot, but.... ruby -e '3+5' Outputs nothing (Windows 7, Ruby 1.8.7, Cygwin or Git Bash). What am I missing? Extra credit - will this also allow the extra cool bundle (stolen from TextMate) Execute and Update # = markers to work properly? EDIT Ok that worked, and I'll accept the answer, but e-texteditor still doesn't work with that really cool bundle. Too bad.
