  • RAID6 mdraid -> LVM -> EXT4 root with GRUB2?

    2012-03-31 Debian Wheezy daily build in VirtualBox 4.1.2, 6 disk devices. My steps to reproduce so far: Setup one partition, using the entire disk, as a physical volume for RAID, per disk Setup a single RAID6 mdraid array out of all of those Use the resulting md0 as the only physical volume for the volume group Setup your logical volumes, filesystems and mount points as you wish Install your system Both / and /boot will be in this stack. I've chosen EXT4 as my filesystem for this setup. I can get as far as GRUB2 rescue console, which can see the mdraid, the volume group and the LVM logical volumes (all named appropriately on all levels) on it, but I cannot ls the filesystem contents of any of those and I cannot boot from them. As far as I can see from the documentation the version of GRUB2 shipped there should handle all of this gracefully. http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/grub-pc (1.99-17 at the time of writing.) It is loading the ext2, raid, raid6rec, dosmbr (this one is in the list of modules once per disk) and lvm modules according to the generated grub.cfg file. Also it is defining the list of modules to be loaded twice in the generated grub.cfg file and according to quick Googling around this seems to be the norm and OK for GRUB2. How to get further by getting GRUB2 to actually be able to read the content of the filesystems and boot the system? What am I wrong about in my assumptions of functionality here? EDIT (2012-04-01) My generated grub.cfg: http://pastie.org/3708436 It seems it first makes my /usr logical volume the root and that might be source of the failure? A grub-mkconfig bug? Or is it supposed to get access to stuff from /usr before / and /boot? /boot is on / for me - no separate boot logical volume.

  • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS X

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...   • Configuration of Server root email - Change Address and Name on outgoing email

    As a newbie Postfix user, I've gotten so far and now I am stuck with a SMALL problem. I would like to configure my local network servers to send alerts and like using the following: 1) From address: [email protected] 2) From name: Hostname I can get #1 to work fine using smtp_generic_maps The problem is that on my email client, the name is listed as "root" - as in the header shows the following: Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2012 13:21:01 -0400 (EDT) From: [email protected] (root) To: undisclosed-recipients:; I'd like to change it to "From: [email protected] (Zeus)" I imagine that this can be done in the headers_check, but so far I haven't gotten anything to work and before I waste a ton of time trying to get this to work, I'd like to make sure I am on the right track. My aliasing and genericmaps are set up correctly (As far as I can see and know - the results are correct!). I just want to change that last bit in the From field to reflect the hostname. I would also like to add something in the subject of the outgoing messages for easy filtering - something like Subject: [Zeus.domain] - "Original Subject" Any suggestions are much appreciated.   • Free blog sites where the blogs can (if the template does) validate as XHTML Strict 1.0?

    I'm looking for a site where I may register a free blog and have the blog validate as XHTML Strict 1.0. On the surface this may seem like a trivial problem only related to the theme/template in use, but that's unfortunately not the case. One example of a provider which can't fullfill this requirement is Blogger. Altough the pages of the blogs there presents themselfs as XHTML 1.0 Strict it is impossible to actually comply with the requirements inheritied by that markup type in the blog (as the XHTML which is generated by Blogger makes the page as a whole invalid). I've sent a mail to Tumblr to see if it was possible with them, but so far my reply consists of them having forwarded my mail with a "suggestion" to the development department. I don't know if we had a communication error or if I'm actually going to receive a proper answer later. Time will tell. I haven't had time to investigate Tumblr myself, so they may very well be the solution to this problem. To sum things up, I'm looking for any provider: Of a free blog. The blog must have the capability to validate as XHTML Strict 1.0. With capability I mean that the system shouldn't get in the way of creating/using a theme which complies as XHTML Strict 1.0. Preferably is large or at least likely to stay around for a couple of years to come. But I'm willing to take my chances if none of the established providers are up to the task. Thank you for reading! I hope you know of any provider which would be suitable, preferably with proof by linking to a blog there which validates. I'm not looking for suggestions to look into, as there are far to many to investigate and far too little time. If you know of something for sure, I'd be very happy to know about it.

  • Suggestion regarding pointing domains to a dedicated server.

    I recently got a dedicated server and I am still at a learning stage. So please bear with me. I wanted to have 3 domains pointed to my server, but initially I asked them the process to point me one and they responded with: Hello, I can set that rDNS for you. Please make sure the domain is pointed to our name servers at godaddy. They are: ns1.xxxxx.net ns2.xxxxx.net After this is done, please allow up to 24 hours for global propagation. Alternatively, we can host your DNS for you if you prefer. What is the domain you would like xx.xxx.xx.xx to resolve to? I then asked him to point one of my domains. They responded, Did you want us to host your dns for that domain or just an rDNS record? They also said, Hosting your DNS is a free service here. We can only do 1 domain per IP. IF you would like to purchase additional IPs, they are $1/IP per month. I personally dont want to host DNS myself. Neither mail server. I have a single IP so far. It will then start to get expensive if I want to host 25 from these guys. I am still in the trial period. Does this seem reasonable as far as pricing goes? If I want to have some one host DNS and mail server, this is getting super expensive. Email hosting from rackspace starts at $2 per mail address, but from then on, its the same if you want added features such as archiving etc; What would you suggest I do if I am on a shoe string budget but I also want to avoid hassle of doing it myself and I only have 3 domains so far and I would need few mail addresses for each of them.

  • Should I be able to Windows Phone 8 emulator running with this AMD config

    I have just bought a new system as follows * AMD A4-5300 Trinity 3.4GHz * Gigabyte GA-F2A55M-DS2 Motherboard I checked and the A4-5300 supports Virtualisation. I have run the SLAT checking tool and it says that my machine supports SLAT. Been into the BIOS and ensures that SVN is enabled. I have also run the coreinfo tool that indicates that SVN is not valid fort the machine nor is NPT.. not sure why this conflicts with the true BIOS setting (I checked with GIGABYTE and seems that NPT and NX are not options that can be set in the BIOS) But.. when I run the emulator I it hangs - I can see some activity in Hyper-V manager, but it doesnt get very far and no meaningfull error messages. Been working the plethora of suggestions to get around this, but so far, nothing has worked. My question is should this setup allow the WP8 emulator to run. I am positive the CPU supports virtualisation, but are there issues with the motherboard here? I have spent a huge amount of time on this so far....am I wasting my time with the current configuration, or should it work? thanks

  • Integrating external computer into a domain - some recommendations please

    Given: * A multi loation company. Every office has local routers that connect to a central VPN capable rouer in a data center. All fine so far. We now need to move a computer off site into a hosting center across the globe, to get it closer to some supplier computers we work for. it will run limited logic but latency is important, and our latency so far is too large. This computer will be in a data center and does no require incoming connections except for adminsitrative purposes, although it needs outgoing connetions. I have no real chance to put one of my VPN routers there, sadly - otherwise I would have no problem. Usage of RRAs is not recommended (we had various probblems there over time). I could deal with it. The computer MUSt integrate into the corporate structure via VPN and join the domain and be fully "tracked" (controlled for performance). What is the best suggestion? So far it looks like my best bets woudl be to log in via RRAS and deal with whatever issues arise there plus uise the local firewall the limit incoming connections to this computer to what is needed (which runs down to an emergency RDP connection allowance). Anyone a better idea?

  • where are the default ulimit values set? (linux, centos)

    I have two CentOS (5) servers with nearly identical specs. When I login and do: ulimit -u on one machine, I get unlimited and on the other, 77824 When I run a cron like * * * * * ulimit -u > ulimit.txt I get the same results (unlimited, 77824). I am trying to determine where these are set so that I can alter them. They are not set in any of my profiles (.bashrc, /etc/profile, etc .. these wouldn't affect cron anyway) nor in /etc/security/limits.conf (which is empty). I have scoured google and even gone so far as to do grep -Ir 77824 / but nothing has turned up so far. I don't understand how these machines could have come preset with different limits. I am actually wondering not for these machines, but for a different (CentOS 6) machine which has a limit of 1024, which is far too small. I need to run cron jobs with a higher limit and the only way I know how to set that is in the cron job itself. That's ok, but I'd rather set it system wide so it's not as hacky. Thanks for any help. This seems like it should be easy (NOT) EDIT -- SOLVED Ok, I figured this out. It seems to be an issue either with CentOS 6 or perhaps my machine configuration. On the CentOS 5 configuration, I can set in /etc/security/limits.conf: * - nproc unlimited and that would effectively update the accounts and cron limits. However, this does not work in my CentOS 6 box. Instead, I must do: myname1 - nproc unlimited myname2 - nproc unlimited ... And things work as expected. Maybe the UID specification works to, but the wildcard (*) definitely DOES NOT here. Oddly, wildcards DO work for the 'nofile' limit. I still would love to know where the default values are actually coming from, because by default, this file is empty and I couldn't see why I had different defaults for the two CentOS boxes, which had identical hardware and were from the same provider.

While I can certainly do something like this: @Test public void testFooThrowsIndexOutOfBoundsException() { boolean thrown = false; try { foo.doStuff(); } catch (IndexOutOfBoundsException e) { thrown = true; } assertTrue(thrown); } I recall that there is an annotation or an Assert.xyz or something that is far less cludgy and far more in-the-spirit of jUnit for these sorts of situations.

    When calculating the load factor of a hashtable with an open-addressing array implementation I am using: numberOfKeysInArray/sizeOfArray however it occurred to me that since deleted entries must be marked as such (to distinguish them from empty spaces), it might make sense to include these in the number of keys. My thinking is that as far as estimating the average number of probes to find an entry, deleted entries should count towards the load factor, but as far as inserting a new key they should not. Which is the proper calculation: including deleted keys or not?

We are leaning towards a hybrid model in whcih the requirements gathering session is comprised of a business analyst, subject matter experts, technical person and a user interface person. The plan is to create user stories that the development team can use in their agile process with 1 month sprints. Has anyone had experience with a hybrid model? How has it worked for you so far?

    How do you calculate the least common multiple of multiple numbers? So far I've only been able to calculate it between two numbers. But have no idea how to expand it to calculate 3 or more numbers. So far this is how I did it LCM = num1 * num2 / gcd ( num1 , num2 ) With gcd is the function to calculate the greatest common divisor for the numbers. Using euclidean algorithm But I can't figure out how to calculate it for 3 or more numbers.

  • 2 column div layout: right column fixed width, left fluid, height relative to eachother

    I want a layout with two columns, two divs, where the left one has fluid width and the right one has fixed width. So far so good - see jsfiddle below - however, the height of the right column must be in relation to the height of the left column. So that if I have some content in the fluid column and would resize the browser window, thereby increasing or decreasing the height of the left column, the right one should follow and getting the same height.     My project currently contains two largish property lists. One is currently 20KB; another is 8KB. So far, I have been maintaining them with xCode's property list editor. This is manageable but also a bit clunky. I am wondering if other people have better ways of doing this? So far, my lists consist of nested arrays of strings. The depth is not uniform.

Are there limitations for asp.net as far as browsers? I have used IE and Firefox does it not work with some of the other browsers (chrome or safari)? Should I say the client is limited to any specific OS (I would expect it to work with a Mac or a Linux box)?

    I know that so far (until MSSQL 2005 at least), system databases are master, model, msdb and tempdb. Thing is, as far as I can tell, this is not guaranteed to be preserved in the future. And neither the sys.databases view nor the sys.sysdatabases view tell me if a database is considered as a system database. Is there someplace where this information (whether a database is considered a system database or not) can be obtained?
