• Object array updates one instance repeatedly [on hold]

  I'm making a 2D shooter, and the player object holds an array of bullets that represent how many shots the player can have on screen at once. At least, this is what I'm trying for. What's happening is that each time any of the objects in the array is called, it seems to update a single object in memory. So, if I fire and then fire again, the object "starts over" from where I shot from and moves twice as fast. I've spent weeks trying to fix this and I've managed nothing. Hopefully another pair of eyes will see something I've missed. • How to connect to local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express

  I just installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my windows 7 machine. I previously had 2005 on here and used it just fine with the old SQL Server Management Studio Express. I was able to connect with no problems to my PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS instance. I uninstalled 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I then installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my machine and elected to have it install SQL Server Management Studio. Now, when I try to connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS (with Windows Authentication, like I always did), I get the following message: Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=-1&LinkId=20476 When I went to the help link it mentions, the help page suggests the following: * Make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is started on the server. * Use the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool to enable SQL Server to accept remote connections. For more information about the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration Tool, see Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections. I did try starting the SQL Server Browser, but don't see that the Surface Area Configuration is installed with this express version. I had seen another user with an almost exact same issue that was missing the database engine on install. If that were the case how could i test for that and where would i go to download that install. • Amazon EC2 instance was not available for few minutes (amazon showed that everything ok)

  Few minutes ago my amazon Ec2 instance was unavailable for a few minutes. During this time neither I was able to connect to web-site with http, nor I was able to ssh to it. Also I was not able to connect to my amazon management console for some time (less than amount of unavailability of my instance). When I was able to connect to management console, it was showing me that everything is running smoothly (but I still was not able to connect to instance in any way for a minute or two). During this time I have checked their status page just to see that there is no issues (my instance is in Ireland and there is nothing wrong there today). After that I was able to log in. I checked my logins with last to see that no one except me was logging in. I also looked in apache logs and there was no errors or warnings during this time. Right now when I see my amazon monitor, I see a small spike in CPU in last 15 minutes (but this is from 10% to like 20%) I have no idea what can it be (I have never experienced anything like this before) and therefore I have no idea how scared should I be or what else should I look for. Can anyone give me a hint what my actions should be in such situation?

• IIS 7: launch unique site instance per host name

  Is it possible to configure IIS 7 so that a single site with multiple bindings (or wildcard bindings) will launch a unique instance for each unique host name? To explain why this is desirable, we have an application that retrieves its configuration from a remote system. The behaviour of the application is governed by this configuration and not by the 'web.config'. The application uses its host name as a key to retrieve the configuration. Currently it is a manual process to create an identical IIS site for each instance of the application, differing only by the bindings. My thought, if it were possible, is that it would be nice to have one IIS site that effectively works as a template for an arbitrary number of dynamic sites. Whenever it is accessed by a unique host name a new instance of the site would be launched, and all further requests to that host name would go to that instance just as though I had created the site by hand. I use IIS regularly, but only for fairly straightforward site hosting. I'd like to know if this could be configured with vanilla IIS 7, but would also welcome answers that require a plugin or 3rd party product. Programming/architectural suggestions about changes to the app wouldn't really be appropriate for serverfault.

• SQLBrowser will not start

  SQL Server 2005 x64 on Windows Server 2003 x64, with multiple instances (default + 2 named). Engineers moved server to a different domain. Since then, cannot get SQLBrowser to start. Still able to query the default instance, and can access named instances by port (TCP:hostname,port#). When on server, can use SSMS to connect to the instances, all is well from that perspective. No errors in the SQL Server logs. As SQLBrowser is starting, an entry in EventViewer.Application says that one of the named instances has an invalid configuration, but I haven't been able to figure out what is invalid. Startup continues, and next message says "The SQLBrowser service was unable to establish SQL instance and connectivity discovery." Next, it enables instance and connectivity discovery support; next, another message about that same named instance having an invalid configuration; then an event says that SQLBrowser has started; last, an event shows the SQLBrowser service has shutdown. I got SQLBrowser to get past the issue with the first named instance by temporarily renaming a registry entry, and now the second named instance can be accessed by name rather than port. Still, cannot access the first named instance by name. Advice?

• Read Linux-formatted (ext3) EBS volume mounted on Windows Server 2008 instance

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 instance set up in Amazon EC2. I've also got some Ubuntu instances on the same EC2 account. I'd like to be able to mount the EBS volume from one of the Ubuntu instances onto the Windows instance as an external drive and then access that drive from the Windows instance. I've looked at tools like ext2fsd and ext2 IFS, but these haven't worked (I couldn't get the former to work, and the latter says that it supports Windows 2008 but gives an error when I try to install it, saying that it only supports up to Windows 2003). I know that there are all kinds of tools to view Linux partitions and that there are filesystems that are compatible with both Linux and Windows, but neither of those options works here (I want to be able to attach and detach the Ubuntu volumes on command, rather than have a permanent partition, and Ubuntu EBS volumes are ext3 by default). Anybody know a good tool I should use?

  I'm currently developing a new ASP.net project hosted on a Windows Server 2008 RC2 with an MSSQL 2008 Express Database. I have three SQL instances (for different purposes) running which currently all contain a single database. For apprently no reason, these instances tend to shut down after some days, for no apparent reason. There might be low or none traffic to these instances, because there might be some days in a row, where I can't develop. It now occured several times, that one or two of these three instances just shut down, so that I can't access the database, without manually starting the instance. I can't seem to find a event log entry for the shutdown, which is most likely because I just enabled logging (why is the default setting off?) So the questions are: * Why does a SQL instance shut down? (Is there such thing as a "Shut down instance after 3 days of inactivity"? * How can I achieve that the instances are running 24/7?

If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). • Can't connect to sql server 2008 named instance

  I have sql server 2005 and 2008 running on a server on my local (and very straightforward) network. Using sql management studio 2008 and visual studio 2008, I can connect over the network to the 2005 instance which is the default instance. I can't connect to the 08 instance (named MC08). I can connect to both when logged in to the server. Remote connections have been enabled for MC08 and dynamic ports is turned off (assigned to port 1045). The sql browser service is running as well. This used to work so I'm not sure what has changed. I can't connect using the IP address either. Nothing unusual in the event log either. Any ideas?

• Amazon RDS Pros/Cons of Multiple DBs per instance

  I run two completely independent websites. I am moving their MySQL databases to Amazon RDS. I'm not going to do Multi A/Z deployment - let's remove that variable from this question. I'm not sure whether to create a single RDS instance with two databases, or two Amazon RDS instances with a single database. Ignore cost for the sake of this question. I will not hit the 1 TB data limit so let's ignore that. However, it is extremely important that crashing one of the websites doesn't impact the other. Based on this document - http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.DBInstance.html I'm assuming that if I write terrible code that crashes one of the databases in a given RDS instance, it could possibly take down the entire RDS instance (and thus inadvertantly affect the other database).   I have Oracle11 with RAC installed on RedHat 5. I have two servers with two instances one on each one. In each server I succeed connect to appropriate instance of database but not to instance of ASM. I connect with user oracle11 and type: export ORACLE_SID=+ASM1 sqlplus "/ as sysdba" It connects but write: Connected to an idle instance and when I try to access to parameters or views I have errors. For know that +ASM1 is the SID I type: ps aux | grep pmon and get: asm_pmon_+ASM1 I tried also with +ASM but it was also unsuccessfully. What is wrong here?

• Installing isolated instance of MySQL on Windows using silent install with .msi

  I'm trying to write an installer for an internal application we wrote. After it installs our application it then installs MySQL using the .msi installer in silent mode. I specify the install dir and data dir to that of a directory within my application's install directory, such as: msiexec /i @@MYSQL_INSTALLER_FILE@@ /qn INSTALLDIR="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\" DATADIR="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\" USERNAME="@@DB_USER@@" PASSWORD="@@DB_PASS@@" (the @@variable@@'s are replace by my installer routine using InstallJammer) Once installed, I use mysqld.exe to install a windows service with a custom service name and defaults file like so: mysqld.exe --install CustomMySQL --defaults-file="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\my.ini" This works fine as long as there is not already another instance of MySQL installed. If there is it silently fails to install MySQL. Running the msi installer manually (double-click) shows an error that a previous version is already installed and just aborts. Is there a way to automate installing MySQL as an isolated instance, regardless of whether another version/instance is already installed?

• Problems to connect Java visualVM to a EC2-instance

  I'm trying to profile a AWS EC2 instance via visualVM. The instance is in a securitygroup which allows all connections and i'm runing jstatd with a grant codebase "file:${java.home}/../lib/tools.jar" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; policy on it. When i try to connect from my local machine with visulVM nothing happens. When i use jps i get the following response $ jps -l -m -v rmi://ec2-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com Error communicating with remote host: Connection refused to host: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out But i can ssh into the instance and use jps locally. Has anyone a pointer in which direction i can debug further?

• How to rename database without first stopping SQL instance to flush connections

  Is there a way to force a database into single user mode so a script can be run to rename databases? I find I have to Restart the instance of SQL (to force off any connections from a web app, etc.) and then I can run this script: USE master go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", true go sp_dboption StagingMDS, "single user", true go sp_renamedb MDS, LastMonthMDS go sp_renamedb StagingMDS, MDS go sp_dboption LastMonthMDS, "single user", false go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", false go After this script runs, I can restart IIS for my web app and it can connect to the new production database. All the above works well and we've been doing this for years but now we've upgraded to SQL 2008 and the SQL2008 instance also hosts other databases that support other web apps. So, rather than using a Restart of the whole SQL instance to enable subsequent single-user mode on 2 databases, is there a less intrusive way of accomplishing this? Thanks.

  Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

• Very High Network out in ec2 instance

  I launched an ubuntu-14.04-64bit instance in Amazon EC2 two days back. And I started Tomcat 7.0.54 in that instance and deployed my application war files. It has no other software installed other than tomcat and the default ones. In the past 2 days, its shows 858 GB of Data Transfer(Network Out) from that instance. I have attached a graph of Amazon CloudWatch Metric "Network Out" My application does not do any data download/upload. Its a Java Spring application and the front end is in HTML&Javascript. My application traffic was very low (less than 20 hits) in those 2 days. Is there a way to find out why these data transfers happened and also to find what data has been transferred. If you can see in graph, network out was 20gb per minute. Some more info: Network in was negligible CPU Utilization was very high Everything else was low

• Lost sudo/su on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have an Amazon EC2 instance. I can login just fine, but neither "su" nor "sudo" work now (they worked fine previously): "su" requests a password, but I login using ssh keys, and I don't think the root user even has a password. "sudo <anything>" does this: sudo: /etc/sudoers is owned by uid 222, should be 0 sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting I probably did "chown ec2-user /etc/sudoers" (or, more likely "chown -R ec2-user /etc" because I was sick of rsync failing), so this is my fault. How do I recover? I stopped the instance and tried the "View/Change User Data" option on the AWS EC2 console, but this didn't help. EDIT: I realize I could kill this instance and create a new one, but was hoping to avoid something that extreme.

• Ubuntu 10.10: 2nd instance of Firefox does not obey GTK2 customizations

  Hi On Ubuntu 10.10 I started a 2nd instance of Firefox using the command: $ firefox -ProfileManager -no-remote & Created a new profile and everything works smoothly except for the fact that this instance of FF does not obey by GTK2 customizations that I have placed in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 Moreover, only SOME of the customizations are not obeyed. For example, the vertical scrollbars are supposed to be on the left, but they are on the right. The scrollbar arrows are together (Mac-like) as specified, so is the scrollbar width. The first instance obeys all customizations with scrollbars on the left. Any ideas?

  Hi, normally i connect to my sql server instance from my local computer, and then the server name to connect to is the name of my laptop. So i can connect to server instance 'MichelLaptop' But now i'm trying to connect to my server from outside my network, and the first thing i wonder is: what is the name of the instance? i've made a redirect to my local machine in the DNS of my domain, so i said (this is not the real data) testsql.mydomain.com goes to 190.191.192.193 and when i ping testsql.mydomain.com, i get a response from 190.191.192.193 But what then is the server name?

• Persistent Spot Instance Request with CloudFormation

  Is it possible to create "Persistent Spot Instance" with AWS CloudFormation ? I'm going through the Autoscale and EC2 CloudFormation's template references but there is no mention how to set a property so the Spot requests stay persistent. When the price bid lower than the actual spot price AWS brings the instances down. I would like the instances to be started automatically when the instance price is cheaper again. This can be set manually when creating a new spot instance request by checking the option "Persistent Request" in the "Request Instances Wizard".
