• Installing GeoIP on Mac?

  I want to install the MaxMind GeoIP C library, so that I can use GeoIP as part of Django. I'm working on MacOS. I've downloaded GeoIP-1.4.8.tar.gz from here and run: ./configure make make check make install without any problems. I've also downloaded GeoIP.dat.gz and GeoLiteCity.dat.gz, unzipped them and put them in a local directory. Then I've set the following paths in my settings.py: GEOIP_PATH = 'path_to_dat_files' GEOIP_LIBRARY_PATH = 'path_to_c_files' Now I'm trying to run python manage.py migrate (which has a reference to GeoIP in a project I'm using), but I'm still getting this error: from django.contrib.gis.utils import GeoIP ImportError: cannot import name GeoIP Any ideas? • Login loop in Snow Leopard

  I can't get out of a login loop of a particular admin user. After entering the password the login screen is shown again after about a minute. Other users work fine. It started happening after a simple reboot. Can you please help me? Thank you! Tried to no avail: Change the password Remove the password Repair disk (no errors) Boot in safe mode Reinstall Snow Leopard and updating to 10.6.6 Remove content of ~/Library/Caches Removed content of ~/Library/Preferences Replaced /etc/authorization with Install DVD copy The system.log mentions a crash report. • Terminal OS X Error when using Python

  Hey, I'm trying to learn how to program so I've installed the latest version of Python and I've been following the Byte of Python tutorial. I'm using Textwrangler I've only gotten as far as the simple "Hello World" intro and I'm already having a problem. I type out the code (just without the ""): "#!/usr/bin/python" "#Filename: helloworld.py" "print('Hello World')" and save it to my desktop as helloworld.py. I then go into terminal and type "python3 helloworld.py" and I get the following error message: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/Resources/Python.app/Contents/MacOS/Python: can't open file 'helloworld.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory I was hoping someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong. If I choose to run the script from Textwrangler it operates just fine however I'm not able to access it from the Terminal. Thanks so much!

• Mac OSX server command equivalent for dhclient?

  Is there an MacOS command that makes a dhcp request, and renews the old lease, drops it for a new one, or usefully reports errors or lack of response from a dhcp server? This would both help fix networking on the machine after problems on the network without rebooting and would also be useful to diagnose wider networking problems from a mac. I can not find any command equivalent of dhclient though obviously some component must be serving this purpose. The question is, is that component exposed to a command line interface? I am biased to the command line for these features and may have overlooked settings panels or tools that might solve it using a gui interface. I believe this question is at the heart of this other question: Is there an equivalent command for 'init.d/networking restart' in OS X

• Can't Launch Firefox on OS X 10.6

  When I try to run Firefox 3.6 or 4 beta I get a message saying: Profile Missing Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. I have tried running the profile manger from the command line using: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -ProfileManager I get the same message in the popup, but I also get: Error: Access was denied while trying to open files in your profile directory. I have tried deleting firefox and reinstalling it. I have also tried deleting anything related to Firefox or Mozilla in the ~/Library/Application Support directories, but nothing seems to help. In addition I have run the disk utility to fix any permissions issues. If I create a new profile or run the command with sudo it works. It seem that that Firefox is trying to put the profile somewhere it doesn't have access to write, but I can't figure out how to change this location or change the permissions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Movie colors are off on ubuntu using Movieplayer?

  I've been playing with a new SLR that also happens to record movies. When I try to view a movie using Movie Player, it plays fine, and the sound is there, but the colors are off - green grass is purple, and my golden retriever is a blue retriever. VLC reports that the file is broken, offers to repair it, and plays it with the same problem. The same file plays fine under WinXP with both Media Player and Quicktime, and with no problems under MacOS also with Quicktime. What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

• RSync to WebDAV mounted volume very slow

  I have a mounted WebDAV store, which I am playing around with to try and put together my own pseudo-DropBox set up. However, it seems very slow to upload larger files (my bandwidth graph goes ok for a little bit, then just stops dead for long periods of time). Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering if the way it gets mounted makes rsync think it's a local drive or something and so may be chattier than it would be if it knew it was a mounted network drive? (I'm new to rsync so may be all wrong here!) I'm syncing using rsync -rv /source/directory/ /mounted/webdav/directory/ This is running using MacOS 10.6, and WebDAV is mounted using the native mounting mechanism.

• MongoDB on FreeBSD

  We are currently using MongoDB 2.0.0 on MacOS but our servers are running FreeBSD. The most recent port of MongoDB is the 1.8.3 version. I have tried to compile the 2.0.0 by hand but I came across errors that I didn't manage to fix. I came across on the Internet a few old resources which are saying that MongoDB does not run well on FreeBSD mainly for performance issue (memory mapped files). Is that true ? Does it mean we have to switch our server to another OS ? Thanks for your opinions! • Flash drive doesn't mount on mac

  I've got two different USB flash drives which are formatted MS-DOS(FAT-16). When I plug each into my MacBook Pro (running MacOS 10.6 - Snow Leopard), they don't mount. I can see them using Disk Utility. When I run an Ubuntu VM inside of VMWare Fusion, Ubuntu has no trouble mounting these either. I've tested with the drives plugged directly into the machine and plugged into a usb hub -- both give the same results. Is there a setting I've inadvertently set which disables automounting? Is there an issue with mounting FAT-16 drives?

• JavaApplicationStub Compatibility with all java versions

  Hi, I am running a Java application on Mac Leopard & on Mac Mini. My Mac Mini upgraded, it is using Java Version 1.6.0_17 and Mac Leopard have version 1.5.0_13. To run that application on Mac Mini I have to copy JavaApplicationStub from path -"/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub" to my application "Content/Resources/Java". But this application successfully run on Mac Leopard. If I do not copy stub at Mac Mini then I am unable to launch application using app by double click, it shows icon for few second then disappears, so in that case I have to run application with its jar. I want that without copying explicitly JavaApplicationStub, how can I run app with all versions of java. If this possible then what changes I have to made? The info.plist file contain JVMVersion is 1.4+. Thanks!

  Similar to this question, is it possible to update installed plugins via the command line? I'm running YSlow with beacon reporting as a nightly cron job under OSX: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -no-remote -P YSlow http://www.example.com/ & PID=$! sleep 300 kill $PID This dumps FF into the background and grabs the PID, waits 300 seconds (for the page to load) then kills it. If there is an update pending, the browser "hangs" waiting for a confirmation. If I do click on the "install updates" link, everything works and then Firefox launches a new process - the $! returned by the shell is no longer valid. Can I update a plugin from the command line without confirmation? Can I curl the XPI into a file and install it without confirmation?

• How do I share my iPhoto photos with my ubuntu partition?

  I have a MacBook Pro dual-booted with Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Karmic. I have recently imported hundreds of my photos into iPhoto - but I now want to be able to see them (and use them as desktop/screen saver images) from my Ubuntu partition (ie when the machine is running Ubuntu instead of MacOS). Is there an easy way to do this direct from the iPhoto library or do I have to shift them all out to an external file directory or something? Further edit - just to make it clear: I have already uploaded my photos directly into iPhoto - then spent many days categorising, tagging and uploading to flickr. Unless there's something I'm missing, I'm guessing it's likely too late to do the "don't copy into the iPhoto library" option. Happy to be proven wrong :) Perhaps somebody knows of a way to "export" the library without losing any of the current information - so that I can (from then on) keep the photos in an external library? I don't want to do this, though, if I lose the information that is currently there.

• OS X Terminal ends session at opening : permission denied

  I have an issue with Terminal on MacOS X 10.7.4. I know where it comes from, but I don't know how to solve it : Yesterday, I installed fish-shell as a shell replacement. Following the installation instructions, I ended typing the following command : chsh -s /usr/local/bin/fish I noticed I had to do a : sudo bash for it to work. Once done, I quit. Today, I try to run Terminal and I see te following message : Last login: Wed Jun 27 12:38:01 on ttys000 login: /usr/local/bin/fish: Permission denied [Opération terminée] (yes, I'm French, which explains my poor English). I cannot type any command since I have no access to the Terminal. I tried with iTerm2 but same issue. No command is set at launch in the default profile of Terminal/iTerm2 (well, in the UI). How can I take the power back ? Thank you.

• Reenabling the Spotlight Menubar item in Mac OS X 10.6

  I believe I followed the instructions here to disable Spotlight indexing and remove the menubar item. I reenabled indexing just fine, but when I changed the permissions back to 744, the spotlight search position came back (as in the space it would normally occupy), but the actual icon and search box will not show up. If I click that portion of the screen I get a blue box, but I can't type anything in to anything. Currently, permissions look like this: [~]$ ll /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle.bak/Contents/MacOS/ total 648 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 835K Sep 17 14:48 Search* ll is an alias mapped to the following alias ll='${LS_PREAMBLE} -hl' with $LS_PREAMBLE [~]$ echo $LS_PREAMBLE ls -GF (Ignore the .bak extension. I decided that until I found a way to fully restore it, I would just remove it entirely following the directions here) That looks right to me and obviously something is launching, but the UI elements aren't there. These apps do an instant or incremental search in the files of a specific directory and make it easy/fast to narrow down the file you are looking for or create a new file. I use both but would rather live in one editor.(that being VIM) Is there some plug in that would do this?

  When MacOS boots up and the users is prompted to select the account (s)he wants to login into, the users can either click the name / icon of the account with the mouse or just type in the name of the account. I want to do the same at the login screen of Windows7: Login screen pops up, I start to type my account name, I select the account with enter and then I type the password and enter again. No usage of the mouse involved. (I am aware of tab-cycling and hard-to-follow-the-almost-invisible-marker-of-where-the-focus-is-right-now)

  Does anyone here ever built Hackintosh by themselves? Actually I'me new in this technology and trying to get hold of Mac system where I can start coding in Xcoder. I've tried in VMplayer and was able to run the Mac environment but unfortunately was not able to run X-code. I've a original MacOS downloaded few days ago and want to built a hackintosh. • Cannot set audio input volume (internal microphone) on mac

  On a macbook air (MacOS X 10.6.5), when doing skype calls people are complaining they hear me very low - so I had a look to the system preferences under audio and noticed the input volume was 54%. I am now trying to set the input volume to 100%. To my surprise the volume is gradually set back as I speak. I tried deselecting 'use ambient noise reduction' but it doesn't help.' Is there any way to avoid this volume auto-setting feature? Any help appreciated!

  Is there a way to have VIM do incremental search on text files? Vim already does incremental search within the currently open file. Examples of programs that demonstrate the type of search I'm trying to accomplish are Notational Velocity for MacOS, Resop for windows or SimpleNote for the web. • Recover a Parallel Desktop 3 virtual machine in VirtualBox

  I have an old HDD image file that was used with Parallels Desktop 3. Ideally I'd like to use it in VirtualBox (conversion). In all the tutorials I found (like this one or that one) the VM must be started: there's the problem. I don't have the machine where Parallel 3 was installed anymore. I tried installing the trial version of the last version of Parallels (9) but it seem it doesn't offer the possibility to import an old VM. So here's the question: Given I can't boot the VM with Parallels Desktop, is there a way to convert the image file to another format that is bootable in VirtualBox? If it changes anything, the host is MacOS X 10.9, the guest is Windows XP.
