  i have 2 windows: window A and window B. -window A and window B have same domain -window A and window B doesn't have any parent window. first question: -is it possible for window A to get a reference of window B? second question: -what is the most elegant way to make window A notify something to window B?   I would like to accomplish the following: If a username or password field is null, notify the user. If user name already exists, do not insert into the database and notify user to create a different name. if the username is unique and password is not null, return the username to the user. As of now it always returns "Please enter a different user name." I believe the issue has to do with the database query but I am not sure.   So, I finally gave up on all my previous the Microsoft Mobile/Phone OS devices and made my switch to Android this year. I am using my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 with CyanogenMod 9.1.0 (http://get.cm/get/jenkins/7086/cm-9.1.0-n7000.zip) and ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 (http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-n7000.zip) since August this year and I am so happy with the performance and the flexibility it offers me. As a software developer by profession, I would expect most of my gadget to be highly customizable and programmable (one time or at intervals) to suit my needs as close as it can. I was introduced to Automation for Android – Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en) via reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/tasker) and the word ‘automation’ was enough for me to dive right into this app. Only automation that I did earlier was switching profiles depending on location on there phones. And now, just imagine a complete set of possibilities that can be automate on the phone or via the phone. I did my research and found a couple of other tools that do the same/as close as what Tasker can do and few of them are even free. There’s one even by Microsoft called on{X} (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.onx.app&hl=en). Microsoft’s on{X} really caught my eye. You can write code for your phone on the web application by them, deploy it on your phone and even trace the flow all using your PC. Really brilliant, I love the fact that it’s all JavaScript. Here comes the but, it is still very very young and it’s policy of accessing my News Feed on Facebook is not something that I can not digest. On{X} is good, but as I said earlier, the API is not very mature and hence, I gave up on it. I bought Tasker, the best 5,00 € I spent in ages and I want to talk about it in this post. I am still a “noob” while operating this tool, but I tried my shot at automating WhatsApp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp&hl=en), a popular messenger for various platform. The requirement for the automation is that, if I send a WhatsApp ‘wru’ message to the phone, it should respond back giving the location and battery level of my phone. It could be useful, if you like to locate your misplaced phone or automatically reply to your partner/friend, honestly, I don’t know what you will use it - through this post, I am just introducing automating WhatsApp using Tasker. Before we begin, the following script only works when your phone is rooted as we will be accessing the WhatsApp database and type some special characters like ‘:’.   Hi there i installed moodle to a directory with softaculous as it doesn't allow installing to subdomain, after install I created a subdomain and pointed the destination (of subdomain) to previously created moodle directory, now when I go to the subdomain.example.com it says Incorrect access detected, this server may be accessed only through "http://example.com/moodle" address, sorry. Please notify server administrator. Any suggestions much appreciated! I must be doing something wrong, when installing it was very similar to these instructions

• Designing for an algorithm that reports progress

  I have an iterative algorithm and I want to print the progress. However, I may also want it not to print any information, or to print it in a different way, or do other logic. In an object oriented language, I would perform the following solutions: Solution 1: virtual method have the algorithm class MyAlgoClass which implements the algo. The class also implements a virtual reportIteration(iterInfo) method which is empty and can be reimplemented. Subclass the MyAlgoClass and override reportIteration so that it does what it needs to do. This solution allows you to carry additional information (for example, the file unit) in the reimplemented class. I don't like this method because it clumps together two functionalities that may be unrelated, but in GUI apps it may be ok. Solution 2: observer pattern the algorithm class has a register(Observer) method, keeps a list of the registered observers and takes care of calling notify() on each of them. Observer::notify() needs a way to get the information from the Subject, so it either has two parameters, one with the Subject and the other with the data the Subject may pass, or just the Subject and the Observer is now in charge of querying it to fetch the relevant information. Solution 3: callbacks I tend to see the callback method as a lightweight observer. Instead of passing an object, you pass a callback, which may be a plain function, but also an instance method in those languages that allow it (for example, in python you can because passing an instance method will remain bound to the instance). C++ however does not allow it, because if you pass a pointer to an instance method, this will not be defined. Please correct me on this regard, my C++ is quite old. The problem with callbacks is that generally you have to pass them together with the data you want the callback to be invoked with. Callbacks don't store state, so you have to pass both the callback and the state to the Subject in order to find it at callback execution, together with any additional data the Subject may provide about the event is reporting. Question My question is relative to the fact that I need to implement the opening problem in a language that is not object oriented, namely Fortran 95, and I am fighting with my usual reasoning which is based on python assumptions and style. I think that in Fortran the concept is similar to C, with the additional trouble that in C you can store a function pointer, while in Fortran 95 you can only pass it around. Do you have any comments, suggestions, tips, and quirks on this regard (in C, C++, Fortran and python, but also in any other language, so to have a comparison of language features that can be exploited on this regard) on how to design for an algorithm that must report progress to some external entity, using state from both the algorithm and the external entity ?

• What are the advantages of the delegate pattern over the observer pattern?

  In the delegate pattern, only one object can directly listen to another object's events. In the observer pattern, any number of objects can listen to a particular object's events. When designing a class that needs to notify other object(s) of events, why would you ever use the delegate pattern over the observer pattern? I see the observer pattern as more flexible. You may only have one observer now, but a future design may require multiple observers.

• Bash script won't stay open in background after running through while

  I can't get the following bash script to stay open after the first message is received from NC: #!/bin/bash port=3333 nc -l $port | while read msg; do notify-send Alert "$msg"; done After the first message it exits. I want it to stay open and continue monitoring for new messages from NC. I know that if I launch nc -l port without the while loop it stays open and I can chat away between the two connections even disconnect from the connected host. • How do you handle objects that need custom behavior, and need to exist as an entity in the database?

  For a simple example, assume your application sends out notifications to users when various events happen. So in the database I might have the following tables: TABLE Event EventId uniqueidentifier EventName varchar TABLE User UserId uniqueidentifier Name varchar TABLE EventSubscription EventUserId EventId UserId The events themselves are generated by the program. So there are hard-coded points in the application where an event instance is generated, and it needs to notify all the subscribed users. So, the application itself doesn't edit the Event table, except during initial installation, and during an update where a new Event might be created. At some point, when an event is generated, the application needs to lookup the Event and get a list of Users. What's the best way to link the event in the source code to the event in the database? Option 1: Store the EventName in the program as a fixed constant, and look it up by name. Option 2: Store the EventId in the program as a static Guid, and look it up by ID. Extra Credit In other similar circumstances I may want to include custom behavior with the event type. That is, I'll want subclasses of my Event entity class with different behaviors, and when I lookup an event, I want it to return an instance of my subclass. • Wordpress - Automatic email to admin on password change

  Noticed something interesting in WordPress...hopefully its just me not seeing the right option. Whenever a user requests a new password, it will notify the site admin that the password was changed. What I'd like to do is disable this feature, as for this specific site I really don't care if users are changing their password. Is this a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or does it require a plugin to disable this functionality?

  I am going to design a MVC pattern. It could be either designed as a delegate pattern, or a Key-Value-Observing(KVO), to notify the controller about changing models. The project requires certain quality control procedures to conform to those verification documents. My questions: Does delegate pattern fit better for unit testing than KVO? If KVO fits better, would you please suggest some sample codes?

  Hi there i installed moodle to a directory with softaculous as it doesn't allow installing to subdomain, after install I created a subdomain and pointed the destination (of subdomain) to previously created moodle directory, now when I go to the subdomain.example.com it says Incorrect access detected, this server may be accessed only through "http://example.com/moodle" address, sorry. Please notify server administrator. Any suggestions much appreciated! I must be doing something wrong, when installing it was very similar to these instructions

• Puppet classes out of order despite explicit arrow operator use

  Absolute puppet beginner here. I'm experiencing an interesting behavior with my puppet manifests and would love to know what I'm doing wrong. Let's for example say I'm configuring the instance with the following ordered classes: class { 'update_system': } -> class { 'facter': } -> class { 'user_sshkey': user => 'ubuntu', type => 'rsa', } -> class { 'tmux': user => 'ubuntu', } -> class { 'vim': user => 'ubuntu', } -> class { 'bashrc': user => 'ubuntu' } -> notify {"Configuring DB role":} -> class { 'postgresql': } when I run the manifest with the --debug switch, by looking at notify statements I can see the classes be executed in the following order: 1. update_system starts 2. a cron type inside of postgresql class (the very **last** class in that ordered list above) is executed 3. postgres::install starts 5. facter starts installing 6. postgres::configure and postgres::service start 7. the vim class is executed 8. "Configuring DB role" notification is made. All the way at the end here. etc Basically the thing is all over the place, the order doesn't seem to follow the arrow operators in any way. I'm guessing I'm missing something here that would force the classes to execute one at a time. Could it be that I'm missing some kind of anchor pattern here? Invalid containment?

• Dedicated server automatic backup solution

  I have a dedicated Ubuntu web server in a cloud environment, and I am looking for a nice way to do automated backups. I would like to backup some directories with web apps, and all my MySql databases. As for destination: make snapshots every two hours localy, and every six hours to a remote ftp server. Also delete backup archives older than seven days(localy + ftp), and notify on any problems by email. Now to achieve some of this functionality I use cron + shell script, and http://www.mysqldumper.net/, but really that doesn't answer my needs. Mysqldumper doesn't know automaticly about new databases, and shell script does not notify on problems. It's something I have to check out from time to time, and i don't have trust for. I googled a while, and seems like most people solve this stuff with shell scripts. Is this a method you can trust? Are there any web-gui tools, I'm missing? Maybe there is a smarter startegy for doing this? I'm a little bit confused.

  I'm trying to configure an IPSec VPN to one company from my home. The company has SANET internet service provider. I was able to create a VPN connection from another company that has the same internet service provider. The problem begins when I'm trying to connect from another ISP like Orange or Telekom. But I can't ping or access any computer in the network. My configuration at home: ISP: Orange Optical connection Terminal: GPON OPTICAL NETWORK TERMINAL G-25E Router: TPLink TL-WR941N --> SPI Firewall Enabled --> VPN - IPSEC Passthrough Enabled I was wondering if the problem could not be on ISP side (that he blocks somehow this connection because in SANET ISP it worked fine) or even in my terminal or router. What could I check? Where could be the problem ?
