• Custom grub config hangs at the prompt

  Please I need help with this custom grub: default=0 timeout=20 fallback=1 title Remote Install root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz_remote lang=en_US keymap=us ks=nfs:192.168.128.42:/tftpboot/Kickstart/ks.cfg ksdevice=00:1A:64:22:32:4B headless xfs panic=60 initrd /initrd_remote.img I have 3 grub configs and I've been able to make the "Remote install" grub config to be the default run. At the moment it boots up but hangs at the prompt.   I have an HP laptop with a Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium operating system. My command prompt doesn't run lots of commands like help, shutdown, ipconfig, ping, etc. I get a message like: 'help' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Only simple commands like cd and dir are working. I noticed that whenever I navigate to c:/windows/system32, the command works. But I need to run some important commands like java on a file that is on the desktop and not in the system32 folder. How can I fix this?

  My Internet access is delivered through an authenticated proxy. This is setup correctly in the "Internet Options" control panel applet and all browsing/GUI apps work fine. For cmd, proxy settings are typically set by exporting http_proxy. The applications I'm trying to use are git and Putty's pscp.exe. I've tried the following syntax to no avail: set http_proxy=http://username:[email protected]:port/ I've also experimented with Netsh.exe and ProxyCfg.exe with no luck. How does one configure an authenticated proxy in the Windows command prompt?

• Windows 7 Install command prompt can't access the C drive

  I'm trying to create a new Windows 7 Professional VHD which I can dual boot to, following Scott Hanselman's guide to creating a bootable VHD. When I get to the command prompt in the Windows 7 installation and try to create a VHD or select/attach a pre-created VHD file I get an error saying that diskpart can't find the path specified. If I try and switch to the c drive using cd c: I see c:\ x:\something\> I already have a Windows 7 Ultimate install and my C drive is an SSD – if that makes a difference.

• Enter response once prompt returns?

  It's neither a secure idea nor one I'd recommend elsewhere, but I have a situation when occasionally it takes a while for my Ansible ad-hoc command to respond. I'd love to pipe or args or whatever is needed to push the required text into the prompt so I can walk away and know it will finish. Ex: $ ansible all -m shell -a "reboot" --ask-pass Password: blah blah blah it worked I'd love to send an argument or << or something to get the password in. Is that possible?

  As you may know, Steam doesn't like no-admin accounts for installing games or whatsoever. In my case, I have a user in my computer that usually install a lot of games and every time I have to put my password to successfully play them. Blame, /bin/SteamService.exe. I came up with a solution: using RunAs to make Steam run as the admin user. But that is a potential security risk. So instead of that, I'm asking if is possible to do the following: Hot to run SteamService.exe with high trust levels (or admin privileges) automatically when Steam calls it? That way he can play and install games in Steam leaving the rest of the system alone. I don't mind if the user has to click "yes or no", but without prompt its better because some games asks every time they're executed.

  How can I clear the current line in the command prompt? (I'm using Windows 7.) Too often, I enter a command, execute it, get many lines of output, then wish to enter another command. But before entering the second command, I press the up arrow key to review the first command, then I find I have to hold backspace for 30-or so characters. (I can't just press down again to get an empty line. Nor can I get it by pressing up again.)

  I know I can change the command prompt to startup on C:\ rather than F:\Documents And Settings or wherever. But I was wondering if it's possible to set bookmarks or some other command that allows me to switch to locations. For example, my Python projects have a long (about 7 subdirectories) address (think that's the word), and as such it takes a while to cd to them. What I would like to do is something like gotodirectory PythonProjects , and have it cd to where I have specified this, be it C:\WINDOWS or F:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\some game\some game data\some more game data.

• Ctrl-Alt-F1 never gives prompt

  When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 in my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 (Santiago) I get a black screen with a blinking cursor, but I never get a login prompt. I can get back to my desktop with Ctrl+Alt+F7, and things work as normal. However, when I run sudo init 3 I get the same thing, but this time I am stuck at the screen and can't get back without a reboot. I'm not even sure where to start looking for the cause of this problem. Are the startup scripts that might be causing the problem or other system configurations that could lead to this? If this is not an known issue, what steps should I take to debug?

  I am trying to perform a network copy of files via a batch script. However, as usual there are some networks where the 'copy' command fails saying 'Bad username or password'. And when I try using xcopy, it never works. I have also tried using, net use \\server\ password /user:domain\username net use \\server\ipc$ /user:domain\username password But none of these work. Any ideas on how I can accomplish this? I was also wondering if it is possible to prompt the ususal Windows login dialog for this...(just an idea) Any leads on this would be highly appreciated. • What is a good way to get back to the command prompt discarding STDOUT and STDERR

  I often launch applications from the cli via e.g. command & to immediately get back to the prompt back. The downside of this is, that I still get STDOUT and STDERR. So I use command &> /dev/null to discard those outputs. This can get quite a chore, when having to write this often during a day. So my question is, is there a better (read shorter) way to discard of STDOUT and STDERR when not needed? What could be done? write a wrapper script to launch applications? What would be an elegant way to do this?

This tells me that there is no sound in most part of the file.   I'm trying to run VirtualBox VM's in the background from a service. I'm having trouble starting a process the way I desire. I'd like to start the virtualbox guest in headless mode as a separate process and show nothing as far as GUI. It's also worth mentioning that I've tried using vboxmanage startvm "Ubuntu Server" --type=vrdp. I can determine whether the server started properly using this. But it shows a new command prompt window for the newly started VirtualBox guest.

• Windows Vista - Can Boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt, Cannot Access Flash Drive

  Hey there, Got a laptop dropped into my lap. Has Vista installed. Normal boot never gets past the login screen. Safe mode will get past, but just barely. I can try and start the task manager at that point, but it never opens. Only reliable way to do anything I've got is the safe mode command prompt... Boots up and logs in fine. I can't see anything noticably wrong via regedit, but it's been a long time since I've had to fix up a Windows box... not sure that I would. Problem I'm having, is that I want to run ComboFix/etc, but have no way to get them on there... When I pop a flash drive in, it seems to mount it (flash drive flickers as normal) but it never seems to be mounted... I cannot access it through any drive letter on the command line. I managed to start the device manager (devmgmt.msc) and the flash drive was recognized and listed... Any ideas on how to get this thing going again? (Short of a reinstall.) (It has no CD drive, either, so burning files to CD would not be easy...) Thanks! Adam

• Skip new Windows 7 user selection and go to login prompt

  We've begun our migration to windows 7 and we ran into an interesting issue. When we hit "CTRL+ALT+DEL" we are brought to the "User selection Screen". Normally, this screen will have an icon for every local user for the machine. These machines are Domain members with "Fast User Switch" disabled so no user names are listed only the "Other User" option. If you click "Other User" or hit enter, the system moves on to the normal login screen where it prompts for user name and password. Here's the issue: We want to find a way to skip over the part where a user selects "Other User". We essentially want the system to always assume that we always want "Other User" and to go directly to the login screen when a user hits "CTRL+ALT+DEL". What I find odd is that the "Other User" doesn't show up until we've had more than one domain user log in. Right after we re-image the machine, the login process goes directly to the user credential prompt. Anyone have any ideas?
