• Trouble with resolving hostnames on CentOS using Bind

  I'm taking a course on server administration at school and I have managed to set up virtual hosting in apache and a dns server on a virtual machine. However, I have now set up an old pc to run CentOS and I'm trying the same on that box. The problem I ran into now is that I can't resolve hostnames from the linux box. I have set up the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf to the IP of the CentOS machine, but when I try for example ping google.com I get ping: unknown host google.com However, when I do ping 66.102.13.105 (which is the Google IP, figured that out by pinging on my mac) I get: PING 66.102.13.105 (66.102.13.105) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 66.102.13.105: icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=15.5 ms Slightly confused why this is happening. Could it be because of my router sitting in between the linux machine and the cable modem? It's a D-Link somethingsomething. Thanks in advance

• Having trouble keeping a 1GB RAM Centos server running

  This is my first time configuring a VPS server and I'm having a few issues. We're running Wordpress on a 1GB Centos server configured per the internet (online research). No custom queries or anything crazy but closing in on 8K posts. At arbitrary intervals, the server just goes down. From the client side, it just says "Loading..." and will spin more or less indefinitely. On the server side, the shell will lock completely. We have to do a hard reboot from the control panel and then everything is fine. Watching "top" I see it hovering between 35 - 55% memory usage generally and occasional spikes up to around 80%. When I saw it go down, there were about 30 - 40 Apache processes showing which pushed memory over the edge. "error_log" tells me that maxclients was reached right before each reboot instance. I've tried tinkering with that but to no avail. I think we'll probably need to bump the server up to the next RAM level but with ~120K pageviews per month, it seems like that's a bit overkill since it was running fairly well on a shared server before. Any ideas? httpd.conf and my.cnf values to add? I'll update this with the current ones if that helps. Thanks in advance! • Active Directory: trouble adding new DC

  I have a domain with 3 DCs. One is starting to fail so I brought up a new one. All are running Win 2003. Problem: there appear to be replication issues between the 4 machines but I can't figure out what's causing this. All are registered with the DNS as identically as I can make them. How do I know there is a problem? Nagios is telling me that the other 3 DCs are having KCCEvent errors and the new machine is reporting "failed connectivity" errors. Doing dcdiag on the new machine reports: the host could not be resolved to an IP address. This seems crazy as I log into it using the DNS name. I can ping it from the other three machines using this DNS name as well. repadmin /showreps from the new machine says its seeing the other 3 machines. Doing the same from one of the older machines doesn't show the new machine. I've tried netdiag /repair numerous times. No luck. There are no firewalls running on any of the machines. If I look at Domain info via MMC (on the new machine) it appears that all the information is current. Users, computers, DCs.. its all there. Im puzzled as to what step(s) I've missed in adding this new machine. Suggestions? • Trouble with mod_proxy and mongrel_rails

  Hey there I'm trying to set up a mod_proxy - mongrel combination, but somehow, apache/mod_proxy is unable to access mongrel locally. The following is my configuration for mod_proxy: ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On <Location / ProxyPass http://localhost:3000/ ProxyPassReverse http://localhost:3000/ Order deny,allow Allow from all </Location Mongrel/Rails ist running just fine, because I can access it from my browser, and even with lynx on the server. However, I get the following error when trying to use the proxy: [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Invalid Content-Length I would appreciate any help :D PS: Oh, and the server is running Plesk to configure vhosts, if thats important.

• Trouble registering punycode domain!

  Not sure if any of you have experience with this, but I am trying to include the anchor (?) in my domain name (using the appropriate punycode to allow it) but upon registering it I encounter the error that the symbol is not supported by the language I have chosen. Does anyone know what language would support this if I were to continue or even how I would go about doing so or if i can even do so. Thanks

• Trouble with port 80 nating (XenServer to WebServer VM)

  I have a rent server running XenServer 6.2 I only have 1 public IP so i did some NAT to redirect ports 22 and 80 to my WebServer VM. I have a problem with the port 80 redirection. When i use this redirection, i can get in the WebServer's Apache but this server lose Web access. I get this kind of error : W: Failed to fetch http://http.debian.net/debian/dists/wheezy/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 46.4.205.44 80] but i can ping anywhere. XenserverIP:80 redirected to 10.0.0.2:80 (WebServer). This is the port 80 redirection part of my XenServer iptables : -A PREROUTING -i xenbr1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.0 .2:80 -A INPUT -i xenbr1 -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT COMMIT What is wrong in my configuration? • Trouble in Team Viewer VPN Connection

  I have completed initial vpn connection setup. It has connected. I have tested with ping and it is ok. My problem is, when I want to start file transfer in VPN it asks for username & password. So what is the user name? I have tried giving Computer-Name/User-Name. I have found my Computer Name by going to Control Panel/System/ & clicking 'Computer Name' tab & username from user accounts or it is shown when I login in windows account (Please correct me if the above procedure is wrong). But what is the password? I have tried giving the account password but it always give 'The username or password is incorrect.' My Question: How to find the username & password? For Information: a) I have Team Viewer 7 installed in one Windows XP PC & one Windows 8 PC. I like to create a secure connection between these two PCs. b) The two PCs are connected in the same local network via a router. Please ask if you need additional information.

• Trouble opening my router to my web server

  Here's the story. I have a webs server created and connected to my router. The website works great when I'm connected to the router, but when I'm off the network I can't access the website. I got the IP for my router by googling "what is my ip." I have opened ports 80 to 10080 to link to the server in the router. One odd thing that I don't understand. When I am in network if I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:80 I can access the web page no problem. If I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:81 (or any other port) I get the error "Cannot access server." Any idea what the problem could be? Could it be my ISP?

  I have 3 sites and a default/test site using mono's test page. I created aFirst, c, d, e, zLast. zLast has rewrite rules that should be evaluated last. Why isnt the server ip address always loading the default page (mono test page) and why isnt csite.ddomain.net always loading the site i want!?! • Trouble Downloading from some sites

  I am trying to download the new Microsoft Security Essentials but when I click on the Download button instead of getting the Download box popup nothing comes up. The progess bar at the bottom shows it doing something then when it reaches 100% nada. I can down load from HP (Drivers) and sites like Majorgeeks with no problem. I also have this problem on the Adobe download page when trying to get the shockwave and flash player. I am fixing my Granddaughters laptop that she got from someone else. There were over 26 Trojans listed on it when I installed AVG and they would not go away. I used CCleaner and HiJack This and deleted everything I could and wiped the freespace. Then ran AVG again and this time after finding a few Trojans and deleting them the system was reported as clean. IE8 then would not connect to the net so I used my computer to DL a copy and put it on the laptop, after that I was able to use the laptop to connect to the net and download a driver to get the sound working again. • Trouble with Russian pc's on my wifi

  I have created a WiFi hotspot for the local community. The problem is, some Russian PC's (Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7) can't get internet connection (We have a lot of bypassing russian fishing vessels / cargo ships). The pc's obtain a valid IP address, and some of them can even manage to send some few packages - But none of them are usable on the network. They all say "Limited internet access" or "???????????? ?????? ? ????????". The thing these PC's have in common is, that they all run a Russian installation of Windows. No one else has problems with the WiFi hotspot - Danish and English Windows, Linux and OS X all work like a charm. Can it be, that there is a difference between the danish / english windows installation, compared to the Russian installation? EDIT START They can't ping the router (One PC got one response - ONCE), they can't access any sites and Windows newer asks "Is this network public, home or work?". EDIT END PS: The hotspot is a airMAX rocket M from Ubiquiti Networks, Inc (www.ubnt.com)

  We have an SBS2008 installation, which has a backup task. It creates a backup twice a day onto external storage. This worked for a long time. But the backup can't be performed now. The last valid backup was before some Exchange updates, SBS Update Rollup 8 and SharePoint updates were installed. The only error in Event Logs is for VSS (the Volume Shadow Service), which I only have in German. Things I've done: restart the server chkdsk /r /f for all volumes restart the VSS service googling manual backup Nothing's helped. How can I set up the backup again?

• Trouble connecting to a local SQL server instance from the web

  We have a small network behind a firewall (WatchGuard XTM 2 series) and network switch. On our network we have multiple instances of SQL server, but 1 in specific that I would like to be able to access remotely from our website. We have a static IP address from our ISP and then all the machines on the network have a locally assigned dynamic IP address. When trying to connect to the database from outside our network how do I get the request to be directed to the proper machine / SQL instance? Is it a parameter in my connection string or something in my firewall? A few things to rule out: 1) The firewall is allowing access from the website to our network. I added the site's IP and opened up port 1433. Also, when trying to connect and monitoring the firewall no exceptions come up as they did before I added the proper IP address. 2) Remote connections on the SQL server has been setup and enabled. I've done a lot of reading up on remote connections and I am sure it has been setup properly. I am currently getting this error message on my site: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)

• sharepoint 3.0 site restore/import trouble...

  Hi, We have some old sharepoint data (from a WSS 3.0 SP1 or SP2 install), that I need to restore. Problem is: This is a time management site, and one of the fields automatically pics up the user name of the user that enters data, and this is used to keep track of who worked when. Now, when I import this into my temporary sharepoint 3.0 server, these fields are blanked, and the creator of the element is replaced by my admin user (the account that ran the import job). So, to the question: Is there any way at all to grab hold of these data before the sharepoint import job "destroys" them? I'm using stsadm -o import. I don't care if I have to pick the database itself apart manually, I just need to know if it's possible to get hold of these fields with data intact from my export files... (Backup you say? It was deleted loong ago. This sharepoint export is all we have...)

  I am involuntary Admin for a MOSS 2007 site. We use profile import from AD, from two domains: Mycompany.com and AM.MyCompany.Com I was looking at the log for the PEOPLE_DL_IMPORT Content source and it has many entries like: spsimport://?$$dl$$/MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com It certainly doesn't look right. Is this normal? What can I do to remedy it ? Can I start over? There are users already in SP and some of them are in SP groups for permission purposes.

  I have a brand new HP Quad Core - 6GB Ram - running 64-bit Windows 7. Running Norton Internet 2010. I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

• PDF form created in Libre Office - trouble with form fields and font sizing

  I am trying to create a PDF Form using LibreOffice. I can create the form elements and export as PDF. However, the form fields are giving me problems. The text in these fields always centers on the bottom, and often the text you input is cut off at the bottom. I found that if I make the fields larger, the text no longer cuts off, but the field is exceptionally large with lots of space above the text. I have made an odt (source) and a pdf (export) file to show what I'm running into. I tried a number of different fonts and sizes, but to make things easier, I made the field names all "field1" so that once you fill out one entry, all fields show as filled in. http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.odt http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.pdf My main question is how do I make form fields that don't cut off the text without having to make the fields way oversized? • Trouble getting PHP, Apache, and Zend talking to eachother (localhost)

  Hi guys, I've searched through several other questions, but haven't found my solution. THe main reason is that I'm not even sure if I have all these things properly installed. I have a hosting account, and have always just deployed everything into the internets, but I'm finally trying to figure out how to get my desktop set up right for learning Zend Framework. I have Apache Server 2.2, PHP, And Zend Framework installed. If I type in http://www.localhost I get "It Works!" in the browser. I'm thinking this means I have Apache installed correctly, but am not pointing correctly to the Zend tutorial? • Badwidth-Hogging Linux Server Causing Trouble

  We have a Linux server (2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu) that's misbehaving on a client site, gobbling up an entirely unacceptable percentage of the client's bandwidth, and we're trying to figure out what the heck it's doing. And the guy who had the sysadmin skillset has yet to be replaced. We're at a loss for what could be causing all that network traffic, and need to figure it out SOON. What log files should I be looking at to find this information? What analysis tools would you recommend for this task? Please note that I'm not looking for a tool that will allow me to analyze FUTURE traffic. The client is on the verge of shutting the machine off entirely; I need to figure out what it's been doing with the data I already have, if that's at all possible. • Trouble Letting Users Get to Certain Sites through Squid Proxy

  We have Squid running on a RHEL server. We want to block users from getting to Facebook, other than a couple specific sites, like our organization's page. Unfortunately, I can't get those specific pages unblocked without allowing ALL of Facebook through. If I remove the "!blocked" part of the http_access rule, all of Facebook works. If I remove "facebook.com" from the blocked_content file, all of Facebook works. Right now, visiting facebook.com/OurOrganization gives a "The website declined to show this webpage / HTTP 403" error in Internet Explorer, and "Error 111 (net::ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED): Unknown error" in Chrome. WhereGoes.com tells me the URL redirects for that URL goes like this: facebook.com/OurOrganization -- [301 Redirect] -- http://www.facebook.com/OurOrganization -- [302 Redirect] -- https://www.facebook.com/OurOrganization I tried turning up the debug traffic out of squid using "debug_options ALL,6" but I can't narrow anything down in /var/log/access.log and /var/log/cache.log. I know to issue "squid -k reconfigure" whenever I make changes to any files.

• Trouble setting up incoming VPN in Microsoft SBS 2008 through a Cisco ASA 5505 appliance

  I have replaced an aging firewall (custom setup using Linux) with a Cisco ASA 5505 appliance for our network. It's a very simple setup with around 10 workstations and a single Small Business Server 2008. Setting up incoming ports for SMTP, HTTPS, remote desktop etc. to the SBS went fine - they are working like they should. However, I have not succeeded in allowing incoming VPN connections. The clients trying to connect (running Windows 7) are stuck with the "Verifying username and password..." dialog before getting an error message 30 seconds later. We have a single external, static IP, so I cannot set up the VPN connection on another IP address. I have forwarded TCP port 1723 the same way as I did for SMTP and the others, by adding a static NAT route translating traffic from the SBS server on port 1723 to the outside interface. In addition, I set up an access rule allowing all GRE packets (src any, dst any). I have figured that I must somehow forward incoming GRE packets to the SBS server, but this is where I am stuck. I am using ADSM to configure the 5505 (not console). Any help is very much appreciated!
