  • SQL SERVER – Detect Virtual Log Files (VLF) in LDF

    - by pinaldave
In one of the recent training engagements, I was asked if it true that there are multiple small log files in the large log file (LDF). I found this question very interesting as the answer is yes. Multiple small Virtual Log Files commonly known as VLFs together make an LDF file. The writing of the VLF is sequential and resulting in the writing of the LDF file is sequential as well. This leads to another talk that one does not need more than one log file in most cases. However, in short, you can use following DBCC command to know how many Virtual Log Files or VLFs are present in your log file. DBCC LOGINFO You can find the result of above query to something as displayed in following image. You can see the column which is marked as 2 which means it is active VLF and the one with 0 which is inactive VLF. • using egrep to find missing @ in log

    - by jols
I am using the following command to find log entries that are the result of a log in to the email server: egrep '_login[^ ]' /var/log/exim_mainlog That works fine to find entries that contain content like this: P=esmtpa A=courier_login:[email protected] S=1573 id=f1cd08396,... But what I need to do is to change my grep statement, so that it finds single word logins that do not use the @ sign, like so: P=esmtpa A=courier_login:name S=1573 id=f1cd08396,... Where the log in before was "[email protected]", but in the second log entry, the log in used was only "name". Is this possible using grep or egrep, perhaps in some kind of a compound statement? Thanks much.

  • Are log records removed from ldf file for rollbacks?

    - by TiborKaraszi
Seems like a simple enough question, right? This question (but more targeted, read on) was raised in an MCT forum. While the discussion was on-going and and I tried to come up with answers, I realized that this question are really several questions. First, what is a rollback? I can see three different types of rollbacks (there might be more, of course): Regular rollback, as in ROLLBACK TRAN (or lost/terminated connection) Rollback done by restore recovery. I.e., end-time of backup included some transaciton...(read more)

  • Seeing release markers in svn log

    - by chuanose
Whenever we make a release of a project we'll create a tag to capture the snapshot. It will be very helpful to be able to see which revisions in the trunk history were used in certain releases. I know the TortoiseSVN revision graph shows this information, but I'm wondering if there's a way to see it in the command-line svn log? I'm coming from a Clearcase background where we'll be able to see the release labels in the history.

  • SQL SERVER – Backing Up and Recovering the Tail End of a Transaction Log – Notes from the Field #042

    - by Pinal Dave
[Notes from Pinal]: The biggest challenge which people face is not taking backup, but the biggest challenge is to restore a backup successfully. I have seen so many different examples where users have failed to restore their database because they made some mistake while they take backup and were not aware of the same. Tail Log backup was such an issue in earlier version of SQL Server but in the latest version of SQL Server, Microsoft team has fixed the confusion with additional information on the backup and restore screen itself. Now they have additional information, there are a few more people confused as they have no clue about this. Previously they did not find this as a issue and now they are finding tail log as a new learning. Linchpin People are database coaches and wellness experts for a data driven world. In this 42nd episode of the Notes from the Fields series database expert Tim Radney (partner at Linchpin People) explains in a very simple words, Backing Up and Recovering the Tail End of a Transaction Log. Many times when restoring a database over an existing database SQL Server will warn you about needing to make a tail end of the log backup. This might be your reminder that you have to choose to overwrite the database or could be your reminder that you are about to write over and lose any transactions since the last transaction log backup. You might be asking yourself “What is the tail end of the transaction log”. The tail end of the transaction log is simply any committed transactions that have occurred since the last transaction log backup. This is a very crucial part of a recovery strategy if you are lucky enough to be able to capture this part of the log. Most organizations have chosen to accept some amount of data loss. You might be shaking your head at this statement however if your organization is taking transaction logs backup every 15 minutes, then your potential risk of data loss is up to 15 minutes. Depending on the extent of the issue causing you to have to perform a restore, you may or may not have access to the transaction log (LDF) to be able to back up those vital transactions. For example, if the storage array or disk that holds your transaction log file becomes corrupt or damaged then you wouldn’t be able to recover the tail end of the log. If you do have access to the physical log file then you can still back up the tail end of the log. In 2013 I presented a session at the PASS Summit called “The Ultimate Tail Log Backup and Restore” and have been invited back this year to present it again. During this session I demonstrate how you can back up the tail end of the log even after the data file becomes corrupt. In my demonstration I set my database offline and then delete the data file (MDF). The database can’t become more corrupt than that. I attempt to bring the database back online to change the state to RECOVERY PENDING and then backup the tail end of the log. I can do this by specifying WITH NO_TRUNCATE. Using NO_TRUNCATE is equivalent to specifying both COPY_ONLY and CONTINUE_AFTER_ERROR. It as its name says, does not try to truncate the log. This is a great demo however how could I achieve backing up the tail end of the log if the failure destroys my entire instance of SQL and all I had was the LDF file? During my demonstration I also demonstrate that I can attach the log file to a database on another instance and then back up the tail end of the log. If I am performing proper backups then my most recent full, differential and log files should be on a server other than the one that crashed. I am able to achieve this task by creating new database with the same name as the failed database. I then set the database offline, delete my data file and overwrite the log with my good log file. I attempt to bring the database back online and then backup the log with NO_TRUNCATE just like in the first example. I encourage each of you to view my blog post and watch the video demonstration on how to perform these tasks. I really hope that none of you ever have to perform this in production, however it is a really good idea to know how to do this just in case. It really isn’t a matter of “IF” you will have to perform a restore of a production system but more of a “WHEN”. Being able to recover the tail end of the log in these sever cases could be the difference of having to notify all your business customers of data loss or not. If you want me to take a look at your server and its settings, or if your server is facing any issue we can Fix Your SQL Server. Note: Tim has also written an excellent book on SQL Backup and Recovery, a must have for everyone. • How to log subsonic3 sql

    - by bastos.sergio
    Hi, I'm starting to develop a new asp.net application based on subsonic3 (for queries) and log4net (for logs) and would like to know how to interface subsonic3 with log4net so that log4net logs the underlying sql used by subsonic. This is what I have so far: public static IEnumerable<arma_ocorrencium> ListArmasOcorrencia() { if (logger.IsInfoEnabled) { logger.Info("ListarArmasOcorrencia: start"); } var db = new BdvdDB(); var select = from p in db.arma_ocorrencia select p; var results = select.ToList<arma_ocorrencium>(); //Execute the query here if (logger.IsInfoEnabled) { // log sql here } if (logger.IsInfoEnabled) { logger.Info("ListarArmasOcorrencia: end"); } return results; }

  • Generating a Change Log from Subversion Logs and integrating with Jira

    - by neves
We use Subversion for version control and Jira for tickets. All our commit messages have a Jira ticket id in it. The repository has a traditional organization with a main trunk and a version branch. I'd like to answer this question: Which closed ticket items entered in this release? See that there are some caveats, like when an item is committed in a release branch and in the main trunk. Is there a tool that already does it for me? Or should I write my own Subversion log analyzer tool?

  • SQL server 2008 Log shipping Failback

    - by MarcoF
I need to set up log shipping for about 10 databases. The primary server is accessed by our website and the secondary server is a BI server. What I am struggling to figure out at moment is the best way to handle a “failback” situation once a failover has occurred. How do I get the primary server back to being the main server for the website? Does anyone have any suggestions or best practices to handle a failback? We are using SQL server 2008.

  • Recovering transaction log from corrupt SQL database

    - by Don Kirkham
We have a database that is backed up weekly in simple mode. Yesterday, we had a crc error corrupt the mdf file and we were unable to save it. I restored the backup from last week, but now we have a gap from the time of the backup to the time of the restore. Since I have the ldf file from that database, is there any way to "replay" that transaction log to fill in the gap? I have tried reattaching the ldf file to the recovered mdf file, but SQL will not allow me to do that. (It just creates a new ldf file with a different name when I reattach the database.) Any ideas would help. This is a lot of data to lose and although it is not critical data, I'd like to get it back (as well as learn as well as learn how to do it.)

  • msysGit: Why does git log output blank lines?

    - by Sam
It appears to insert less blank lines the closer I type the command to the bottom of the terminal window. If I type it at the top of the terminal window, it inserts nearly a full window height of blank lines; if I type it at the very bottom, no blank lines are inserted. It seems like the pager program is pushing output to the bottom of the terminal window, but I want the output to be right below my command or at the top, like in Linux git. I can get expected behavior by using git --no-pager log, but what if I want to use a pager?

  • Is there a "vim runtime log"?

    - by Somebody still uses you MS-DOS
Sometimes I try a customization/command in my vimrc. Everything seens to be correct, but it just doesn't work. It's difficult to know what's happening when vim starts, and know which command failed or not, so it's really difficult to debug what can be causing a problem in my vimrc. It's a trial-error approach, which is time consuming and really a PITA. For example, I'm having problems with snipmate plugin in some files and just don't have a clue on how to discover the problem. Is there a "runtime log" when vim starts, telling which commands it executed, which ones failed and such? This would help me a lot.

  • Child service not writing to event log

    - by Tommy Fisk
I am having a very simple (but incredibly frustrating) issue with a parent service and the child service. Let's call the parent service "Service A" and the child "Service B". Both services reside on the same box. Using WCF Storm, when I send Service B a message, I see lots of entries in the event viewer for it. However, if I send a message to Service A, which calls Service B, I only see entries from Service A. So for some reason, the child logs are not written when the parent calls it, but if I call it myself, the logs do indeed show up, so I know it's not a problem with the logging or anything like that. Here is what I am using to write to the event log. // in some random static class private static EventLog el = new EventLog(); el.WriteEntry("In " + location + ", " + message); // params passed in Does anyone know why this is happening? And more importantly what I can do about it?

  • SQL SERVER – Reduce the Virtual Log Files (VLFs) from LDF file

    - by pinaldave
Earlier, I wrote a quite note on SQL SERVER – Detect Virtual Log Files (VLF) in LDF. Because of this I got responses suggesting too many VLFs are bad for log file. This prompts to a simple question: “How many is ‘too many’ VLFs?” I suggest that you go and read an article written by Kimberly over here. I am sure that you are going to have a clear understanding of what a good number for your VLFs is from that article. If you have lots of VLFs, you can reduce them right away using the following method: (I am just attempting to write a working script over here.) USE AdventureWorks GO BACKUP LOG AdventureWorks TO DISK='d:\adtlog.bak' GO -- Get Logical file name of the log file sp_helpfile GO DBCC SHRINKFILE(AdventureWorks_Log,TRUNCATEONLY) GO ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks MODIFY FILE (NAME = AdventureWorks_Log,SIZE = 1GB) GO DBCC LOGINFO GO Again, here I have assumed that your initial log size is 1 GB, but in reality you should select the number based on your own ideal size of the log file. If your log file grows to 10 GB every day, you may want to put the value as 10 GB. For accuracy, read what Kimberly’s original article says over here. • Log call information whenever there is a call.

    - by linuxdoniv
Hi, I have written the android application and I want the application to send the call information whenever there is an incoming call and it ends. This way I would be sending all calls to the server irrespective of size of the call log. Here is the code public class PhoneInfo extends BroadcastReceiver { private int incoming_call = 0; private Cursor c; Context context; public void onReceive(Context con, Intent intent) { c = con.getContentResolver().query( android.provider.CallLog.Calls.CONTENT_URI, null, null, null, android.provider.CallLog.Calls.DATE+ " DESC"); context = con; IncomingCallListener phoneListener=new IncomingCallListener(); TelephonyManager telephony = (TelephonyManager) con.getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE); telephony.listen(phoneListener,PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE); } public class IncomingCallListener extends PhoneStateListener { public void onCallStateChanged(int state,String incomingNumber){ switch(state){ case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_IDLE: if(incoming_call == 1){ CollectSendCallInfo(); incoming_call = 0; } break; case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_OFFHOOK: break; case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING: incoming_call = 1; break; } } } private void CollectSendCallInfo() { int numberColumn = c.getColumnIndex( android.provider.CallLog.Calls.NUMBER); • Zabbix Log Monitoring - Duplicate alerts

    - by ArunS
I am configured Zabbix to monitor my Jboss Server logs for Erros and exclude some know errors. This setup is working with one issue. Zabbix will send me alerts when there is a new "ERROR" entry in the log file. But sometimes I get multiple alerts for the same event. For example, I got 5 alerts with the same time stamp "2012-06-25 07:55:56,864 ERROR". The duplicate alerts count is not constant, sometimes I get 2 sometimes 5 or 11. I checked the Monitoring Latest data in the GUI, and found that there is no duplicate entries. I have given my configuration of the log monitoring below. I am using latest version of zabbix server(2.0) Item configuration: Description: Server Error Monitoring. Key: log["/SERVER/jboss/jboss-5/server/ps/log/server.log","ERROR",UTF-8,200,skip] Type: Zabbix Agent (Active) Type of information: Log Interval :30 Trigger configuration: Description: Found Error in Server Log. Expression: (({SERVER Error Monitoring - PS:log["/SERVER/jboss/jboss-5/server/ps/log/server.log","ERROR",UTF-8,200,skip].regexp("can not execute")})=0) & (({SERVER Error Monitoring - PS:log["/SERVER/jboss/jboss-5/server/ps/log/server.log","ERROR",UTF-8,200,skip].regexp("Unexpected redirect")})=0) Event generation: Normal + Multiple TRUE events Action configuration: Name: alert mail Event source: Trigger Enable escalations: Uncheck Default subject/message: Default Recovery message: Uncheck Action conditions: Trigger value = PROBLEM Action operations: Send message to User "Admin" Please help me fixing this issue.

  • How can I get MySQL 5.5 to log warnings to one of the log files?

    - by Wodin
    I have found various things that say that you can log warnings to the MySQL error log, but I have not been able to actually make it happen. I do have the error log working, and MySQL prints stuff to it on startup and shutdown and occasionally at other times, but if I e.g. SELECT CAST('123' AS DATE); and then SHOW WARNINGS; I can see the warning, but it does not show up in any logs. I've also tried enabling the general log and the slow query log, but these don't show the warnings either. I've tried with log_warnings = 1 and log_warnings = 2, but still no warnings are logged. What am I doing wrong? mysql> show variables like '%error%'; +--------------------+--------------------------+ | Variable_name | Value | +--------------------+--------------------------+ | error_count | 0 | | log_error | /var/log/mysql/mysql.err | | max_connect_errors | 10 | | max_error_count | 1024 | | slave_skip_errors | OFF | +--------------------+--------------------------+ mysql> show variables like '%warn%'; +---------------+-------+ | Variable_name | Value | +---------------+-------+ | log_warnings | 1 | | sql_warnings | OFF | | warning_count | 0 | +---------------+-------+ 3 rows in set (0.06 sec) mysql> show variables like '%log%'; +-----------------------------------------+-------------------------------+ | Variable_name | Value | +-----------------------------------------+-------------------------------+ ... | general_log | ON | | general_log_file | /var/log/mysql/general.log | ... | log | ON | ... | log_error | /var/log/mysql/mysql.err | | log_output | FILE | | log_queries_not_using_indexes | ON | ... | log_warnings | 1 | ... | slow_query_log | ON | | slow_query_log_file | /var/log/mysql/mysql-slow.log | ... +-----------------------------------------+-------------------------------+ Edit: mysql> show global status like 'Aborted%'; +------------------+-------+ | Variable_name | Value | +------------------+-------+ | Aborted_clients | 24 | | Aborted_connects | 15 | +------------------+-------+ 2 rows in set (0.08 sec) Edit: Clarification: I do get [Warning] Aborted connection 1 to db... and [Warning] Access denied for user... messages logged, but not the warnings that you can see via SHOW WARNINGS after e.g. inserting something or running LOAD DATA INFILE... which is what I'm looking for.

  • IP address shows as a hyphen for failed remote desktop connections in Event Log

    - by PsychoDad
    I am trying to figure out why failed remote desktop connections (from Windows remote desktop) show the client ip address as a hyphen. Here is the event log I get when I type the wrong password for an account (the server is completely external to my home computer): <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing" Guid="{54849625-5478-4994-A5BA-3E3B0328C30D}" /> <EventID>4625</EventID> <Version>0</Version> <Level>0</Level> <Task>12544</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x8010000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2012-03-25T19:22:14.694177500Z" /> <EventRecordID>1658501</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="544" ThreadID="12880" /> <Channel>Security</Channel> <Computer>[Delete for Security Purposes]</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data Name="SubjectUserSid">S-1-0-0</Data> <Data Name="SubjectUserName">-</Data> <Data Name="SubjectDomainName">-</Data> <Data Name="SubjectLogonId">0x0</Data> <Data Name="TargetUserSid">S-1-0-0</Data> <Data Name="TargetUserName">[Delete for Security Purposes]</Data> <Data Name="TargetDomainName">[Delete for Security Purposes]</Data> <Data Name="Status">0xc000006d</Data> <Data Name="FailureReason">%%2313</Data> <Data Name="SubStatus">0xc000006a</Data> <Data Name="LogonType">3</Data> <Data Name="LogonProcessName">NtLmSsp </Data> <Data Name="AuthenticationPackageName">NTLM</Data> <Data Name="WorkstationName">MyComputer</Data> <Data Name="TransmittedServices">-</Data> <Data Name="LmPackageName">-</Data> <Data Name="KeyLength">0</Data> <Data Name="ProcessId">0x0</Data> <Data Name="ProcessName">-</Data> <Data Name="IpAddress">-</Data> <Data Name="IpPort">-</Data> </EventData> </Event> Have found nothing online and am trying to stop terminal services attacks. • Rotating Oracle Database's Alert Log with ADRCI

Many Oracle database administrators would not only like to report on (ORA-) errors but also manage the alert log itself--saving and/or trimming the alert log, aka alert log rotation. Oracle's new ADR with command interface can easily be used to help rotate Oracle's alert log.

  • Optimizing Transaction Log Throughput

As a DBA, it is vital to manage transaction log growth explicitly, rather than let SQL Server auto-growth events "manage" it for you. If you undersize the log, and then let SQL Server auto-grow it in small increments, you'll end up with a very fragmented log. This article demonstrates how this can have a significant impact on the performance of any SQL Server operations that need to read the log.
