• Is it possible to have a portable plotter that can print QR codes on burlap?

  This is a hardware question. Is there a class of plotters that are portable and accept sharpies? The use case: I have a burlap sack. It will be taking very specific potsherds from an archaeological dig. It needs an indelible QR code (or bar code) printed on the burlap. (Stickers have far far too short a lifetime). It was my thought that a plotter that uses sharpies and that works in the field would be the optimal solution for this problem. Is a portable plotter the right solution? If so, who makes them? If not, what is a better solution?

  With netstat -a I can see all connections from my machine to the MySQL Server. There is any way too see which process or executable is responsible for each connection? The only solution I found so far is to listen the packets and analyse the data inside it. But what if the data couldn't provide information about the process?

  I have a VPS running Centos with Kloxo on and I was wondering how I would upgrade the PHP to 5.3 - It's currently running 5.2.6. • Is it possible / recommendable sending HTML emails containing Javascript?

  This is mostly a rhetorical question, as far as I've checked the answer is 'don't even bother', but I wanted to be really sure. We have an email app, where you can send email to lists of subscribers. This is not spam: it's used, for example, by an university to send communications to its students, by a museum to send emails to subscribers, etc. Recently, I was asked by a prospective client if it was possible to send html messages containing javascript without being marked as spam. Not knowing, I did a short trip of the webs and what I've got is (percentages out of my posterior) 'half the clients won't display properly', 'half the clients will flag you as spam' and 'half the clients will have blocked javascript altogether' (There's clearly some superposition). So the best solution seems to be adding a link to a proper page if really necessary. Have you got a different experience? Do you know of any email-merge solution that provides this feature? Do you know if specific clients accept it or refuse to display html with javascript?

• Wordpress & Django -- One domain, two servers. Possible?

  My question is about hosting Django and Wordpress under one domain, but two physical machines (actually, they are VMs but same diff). Let's say I have a Django webapp at example.com. I'd like to start a Wordpress blog about my webapp, so any blog page rank mojo flows back to my webapp, I'd like the blog address t be example.com/blog. My understanding is blog.example.com would not transfer said page rank mojo. Because I'm worried about Wordpress security flaws compromising my Django webapp, I want to host Django and Wordpress on two physically separate machines. Given all that, is it possible using re-write rules or a reverse proxy server to do this? I know the easy way is to make my Wordpress blog a subdomain, but I really don't want to do that. Has anyone done this in the past, is it stable? If I need a third server to be a dedicated reverse proxy, that's totally fine. Thanks!

• Possible to (re)sync 2 drives into RAID 1 Array?

  Have an XP machine with 2 drives configured in a RAID 1 array. Trying to fix a boot problem, I took the drives out to run chkdsk on them, and I accidentally got them out-of-sync (event logs, etc). Is there any way to duplicate the contents of one drive onto the other to restore their RAID-ness, or have I really messed myself up?

  Is it possible to calculate the row position in the cartesian product of two arrays? For example if you have one array of two rows and another of three rows it's easy to calculate the size of the cartesian product (Array1.Rows.Count * Array2.Rows.Count = 6), but you can't iterate through each array and just use the product of the respective row positions to calculate the row position in the cartesian product.   I would like to set up a Mac buildbot slave, but unfortunately it's not possible to install Mac OS X 10.5 on my XenServer hypervisor. So, I've had an idea, but not quite sure whether or not it'll work. The application is C++, and on Mac it's compile using GNU Make. I have a Mac desktop PC, and I was hoping I could copy the .h and .lib files on to a Linux box, and try to build against the Mac headers: #include <mach-o/dyld.h> #include <AvailabilityMacros.h>

• Is it possible to generate plain-old XML using Haml?

  I've been working on a piece of software where I need to generate a custom XML file to send back to a client application. The current solutions on Ruby/Rails world for generating XML files are slow, at best. Using builder or event Nokogiri, while have a nice syntax and are maintainable solutions, they consume too much time and processing. I definetly could go to ERB, which provides a good speed at the expense of building the whole XML by hand. HAML is a great tool, have a nice and straight-forward syntax and is fairly fast. But I'm struggling to build pure XML files using it. Which makes me wonder, is it possible at all? Does any one have some pointers to some code or docs showing how to do this, build a full, valid XML from HAML?

• Is it possible to have a scheduled task click a button in Windows?

  One of my clients has an application that can not be run from command line or via API but needs to be run on an scheduled basis. It would require that I launch the application if it's not already running and then click a button. This task would exist on a server. I had read about AutoHotKey but it doesn't sound like it can click buttons from a Scheduled Task. Does anyone have ideas on how to do this? NOTE: As I answered below... I know this is a hack. It would be better to have an app that can actually be scheduled to run. Unfortunately (for me) this application isn't going to be replaced as it is connected to the client's beloved inventory management system and the entire deal is proprietary. So I just need to find an option to attempt this (might not be completely reliable I know). Thanks.

• Is it possible to use Google Docs Viewer to view files already in Google Docs?

  The title is a little confusing. I'll elaborate. As far as I can tell, the Google Docs Viewer tool accepts a link to a raw document file (e.g. .doc, .pdf, et. al.), and renders its contents in the browser. For example, this url to a pdf http://research.google.com/archive/bigtable-osdi06.pdf when passed to Viewer, returns this link: http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch.google.com%2Farchive%2Fbigtable-osdi06.pdf What I'm trying to achieve is, use the Viewer to view a document already hosted in Google Docs (i.e. no longer a raw document file). When passing a link to a Google Docs document to the Viewer, the result is not as expected. It renders the link's HTML source instead of the document's contents. The reason I want to do this is that I want to be able to use the "embed" feature of Viewer to view Google Docs documents. Does Google Docs have a "link to embeddable view" feature? P.S. Here is a sample snippet to an embedded document. • Is it possible/advisable to run VMware Server ESX/ESXi on a laptop?

• What service can hold CPU at lowest frequency possible when on battery load under Ubuntu?

  When I'm running on battery even with "performance" frequency scaling governor, something regularly lowers CPU speed to it's lowest value. I don't really want that, my AC strip usually in another room so I don't really need to save power. How can I find what service doing that? laptop_mode is disabled so that's not it. Update: Looks like CPU being scaled down only if it is under load. If it is more or less idle, it could stay on any frequency pretty much forever, but once it gets loaded, it quickly jumps to it's lowest frequency. • In Windows 7 power management, is it possible to set different sleep settings for different SATA disks?

  I'm having an issue with Windows 7 either freezing up or generating a BSOD coming out of sleep. I suspect that it is related to my boot/OS drive, an OCZ Vertex SE SSD, because numerous other Vertex users have reported sleep problems. Notably, if I put the computer to sleep, it almost always wakes correctly. If it goes to sleep after a timeout, it almost always BSODs. I disabled timed sleep and now it freezes when left unattended. My next step is to disable "Put hard disks to sleep after X minutes", but I'd like to change this setting only for the SSD and not for the rotating data disks, which I would like to spin down normally. Does anyone know a place to configure sleep on a per-disk basis? I don't need to set different timeouts on different disks (although that would be nice), simply setting "this disk sleeps" and "sleep is disabled for this disk" would be great. Additional system information: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Core i5 - P55 chipset, Intel RST drivers are installed. One SSD, two rotating HDD, and a DVD-RW drive are all connected to the Intel SATA ports. I could potentially move some of these to my motherboard's other SATA controller if that would help.

• Is it possible to use two separate USB tuners with Windows Media Center?

  I'm planning to replace my traditional PC-style media center (with twin tuners) with an Asrock Ion 3D (or similar) but this means forgoing my existing PCI-E dual tuner card for a USB solution. Since Freeview HD (using DVB-T2) is now available I'd like to equip my media center to take advantage. The trouble is there are currently no dual DVB-T2 USB tuners on the market (that I can find anyway). Would I be able to plug two separate USB tuners and have them correctly picked up and working within all apps, including Windows Media Center? Are there any caveats I might need to bear in mind when using two tuners in this way?

• What are possible causes of keyboard lag on my desktop machine?

  I am running Windows 7 and began experiencing keyboard lag in most applications, and it seems to be getting worse. Certain websites are the worst - on some, I can type a sentence, take my hands off the keyboard, and watch the characters continue to appear on the screen for several seconds. Others are not as bad, but still noticeable and annoying. I just started noticing it in non-browser applications (e.g. Outlook) as well. I've disabled all extensions in Firefox, rebooted my machine, and that did nothing. There is nothing using much memory or cpu cycles, even when the lag is occurring. This is a machine at work with very strict controls over what can be installed, so the chances of any kind of malware are very slim. I don't believe anything as been installed since before the problem started. What could be causing this, and/or what can I do to debug?

• Outlook + Exchange 2007: it is possible to rid of local OST files?

  I am looking for a solution which would allow to use a convenience of Outlook as a mail client app while at the same time have no PST or OST files on a local computer. Even in 'non-caching' mode Outlook creates an OST file where it downloads everything from the Exchange server. OWA does not create any local files (except cookies I believe) but lacks some of the nice features Outlook has. Would it be feasible to place OST files on a network share? Maybe the solution exists for some other client+server pair?

• Is it possible to route *.example.com to a single machine without registering extra domains?

  I would like to achieve something similar to what wordpress.com does - giving each user its own subdomain. user1.wordpress.com would in the VirtualHosts setup of Apache would have its DocRoot at /user/user1, for instance. Now, our hosting service provider takes a fee for creating a domain, and in our case this would mean a ridiculous number of domains with a matching price. After some googling on DNS I came over a description of a DNAME record. That seems to fit the bill precisely. Any reason why my service provider would not do this, or why I should not do this?

  You can disable but you can't delete them from the "Manage addons" dialog. In IE 7 there was a delete button but I've never seen it enabled, in IE 8 I don't see the button at all. My guess would be that IE addons are registered as COM components and you cannot track who uses that component besides IE itself so it would be unsafe to delete.

Example: Page 1: Search box for an employee id. Page 2: Search result for the employee details. Two ways that I could think: Get the employee details in page 1 by ajax and pass the result to the page two. Pass the employee id to page 2 and get the result by ajax in onload.   I have 3 xsd files: a.xsd b.xsd shared.xsd shared.xsd is imported to both a.xsd and b.xsd using <xs:import schemaLocation="shared.xsd"/> shared.xsd defines <xs:element name="item"> <xs:complexType> .... If I generate java code using xjc a.xsd and b.xsd is generated into different packages and in each package a separate java class is generated for item. How would it be possible to have a single shared class for item and make a and b use it?

• Upgrading HP DL185 G5 8LFF, is using a Dell J1520 4-Drop SATA Adapter possible?

  The HP DL185 G5 8LFF model supports 8 3.5" drives and 1 optical drive. However, instead of the optical drive, I'd like to have 2x 2.5" drives instead. The problem is that the PSU has no more SATA power cables (even though the motherboard has 4 additional SATA data ports). The PSU does have a free 10-pin connector and it looks like the J1520 cable from Dell would fit the bill. Link to cable description Does anyone have any experience using these cables? Are they safe? Any other ideas for adding the disks to the server if I don't use the cable? Thanks!
