  I am a freshman in college which has been Java programming for over a year. I haven taken a couple of programming courses, both of which were with Java. And I have done web development for several years. So overall, I would't say that I am a complete beginner in programming. Recently, I have developed a strong interest in developing for Android. I read that Android development was with Java and I thought it would making development easier for me. But I was very wrong. Based on reviews from Amazon, I have begun reading "Professional Android Application Development by Meier but everything is going over my head. The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development seems a bit more for my level but I still want everybody else's opinion. The Google stuff isn't very helpful to me at my level and neither are the tutorials on anddev and such. Any advice for a complete beginner on how to get started? Thanks.

  I have written a number of applications for blackberry and am just starting in Android. It seems to me that android has a lot more built in functions. I am starting by recreating some of my BB apps on Android and on one I take a few xml sites and parse them out. On blackberry I implemented this by creating a class that extended a thread. I would construct a new instance of this class with the parameters of my http request and it would call a function back in my main class, sending it the results. I am tempted to reuse my code, but am curious if android has something better built in. I have been looking at the handler class as well as possible using a service. Bascially, I would like to start a new thread that will return a document of a specific url. Thanks!

• Postgres cannot connect to server

  Super stumped by why Postgres isn't working on a new app I just started. I've got it working for one app already. I'm using postgres.app, and it's running. I started a new app with rails new depot -d postgresql and then I went into the database.yml file and changed username to my $USER (which is what it is for the other app, which is working). • getView only shows Flagged Backgrounds for drawn Views, It does not show Flagged Background when scroll to view more items on list

  I am trying to create a listview that receives a flagged list of items to indicate a status to the user. I have been able to create the flag display by using a yellow background (see image at bottom). In Theory, the flagged list can have many flagged items in it. However in my app, only the first three flagged backgrounds are shown. I believe this is because they are initially drawn to the screen. The Flagged background that are not drawn initially to the screen do not show. I'd like to know how to get the remaining flags to show in the list. ListView Recycling: The backgrounds in the listView are being recycled in getView(). This recycling goes from position 0 to position 9. I have flags that need to match at positions 13, 14 and so on. Those positions are not being displayed. listView.getCheckedItemPositions() for multiple selections: This method will not work in my case because the user will not selected the flags. The flags are coming from the server. setNotifyOnChange() and/or public virtual void SetNotifyOnChange (bool notifyOnChange): I'm not adding new data to the list, so I don't see how this method would work for my program. Does this method communicate to getview when it is recycling data? • LNK 1104 error to lib file - Continues despite removing includes and links

  A link error to a lib file popped up out of the blue in a c++ application of mine after code was working fine in my last session. Error 1 error LNK1104: cannot open file '..........\Program Files (x86)\FMOD SoundSystem\FMOD Programmers API Windows\api\lib\fmodex_vc.lib' I triple checked my project directories were set up correctly to link to the lib file, that the file existed in said directory and that it was a working version of the .lib. My next step was to remove the includes to the file and the links to bypass the error and work on the rest of my code until the problem was solved. The error remains, however, despite: Commenting out absolutely every include relating to the lib. Commenting out absolutely every line of code dependant on the includes. Removing the directory from VC++ Directories in the project properties. Checking the Additional Library Directories field was also clear of references. To my understanding this should have made the library and related code virtually non-existant to the compiler. What am I missing? The library itself is fmodex_vc.lib - part of the FMOD API for providing sound to interactive applications. Again, the application was working one session, but failed to compile the next. I hadn't touched the code since so this led me to believe some aspect of VS is at fault. I'd like to avoid the time involded in re-installing if possible as I'm on the clock for a review tomorrow evening and there are a few more things I'd like to smooth out before then. If necessary, however, I won't hesitate. Very much appreciate the help.

  In Visual Studio (C++) the other day, I was trying to build some example code and it would not work, even though I was pointing at the right include and lib directories. (I got linker errors) I asked a friend who fixed the problem by specifying the necessary .lib files in the General Properties-Linker-Input field of the project settings. My questions: Simply pointing to the directory with the .lib files is not enough? You need to specifically tell the linker which lib files to link? By listing the .lib files in the "additional dependencies" field, am I specifying exactly which static libs get built into the exe? • Flattening out a lib directory using jarjar

  I'm trying to flatten out the lib directory of a project using jarjar, where it will produce a jar file with my main code and all my required libraries inside of it. I can get the project code into the jar, but I need to find a way to get every jar in the './lib/' directory extracted to the base directory of the final output jar. I don't want it flattened in the sense that I still want the package hiearchy preserved. I could manually list every jar file using zipfileset, but I was hoping to do it dynamically. I would also like to include any *.so files flattened into the base directory of the output jar so I can extract them into a temp dir easily without having to search through the jar. For example my lib directory... ./lib/library1.jar ./lib/library2.jar ./lib/foo/library3.jar ./lib/foo/bar.so would look like this when cracked open in the output jar file... /..library1_package_hierarchy../lib1.class /..library1_package_heirarchy../lib2.class ... • Upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 failed

  Today Ubuntu asked me to upgrade to 11.04. The installation went completely fine until right at the end when the following packages failed: install-info ubuntu-standard The installer hung so I had to shut it down manually. Ubuntu still works fine but it says that the upgrade didn't work properly so I am hesitant to restart it until I have resolved the problem in case I can't get back in. I am running Ubuntu inside the latest version of Virtual Box and was previously running version 10.10. • error executing aapt, all of the sudden

  I know there are a lot of these topics around but none seem to help in my case, nor describe it exactly. The best similar one is aapt not found under the right path. My problem is that I can be using Eclipse for a whole evening programming, compiling and using my device, and then suddenly I get "error executing aapt" for my current project and ofcourse R.java isn't (properly) generated anymore. I then restart Eclipse and everything goes away. I'm seeing this once a day on average however. I've recently switched to amd64 and installed the latest Android-2.3 SDK and matching tools. I know that there is now a platform-tools folder that has an aapt version that should work SDK version independently. At first I had added this directory to my PATH, as instructed on the SDK website. I've also tried not adding it to my path and making a link platforms/android-9/tools so that every SDK version might use it's own old copy. Needless to say, platform-tools/aapt is there and has the right permissions, and I have been able to execute it on the command-line at any time. When I do write a faulty xml file or sorts, and appropriately get an error, I see an extra line that says "aapt: /lib32/libz.so.1: no version information available". I'm running a recent Gentoo linux system. I have everything installed to support x86 on amd64, but have re-emerged emul-linux-x86-baselibs and zlib just to be sure. The problem persists. I do see some pages that spell horror over some zlib bugs, but I'm not sure if that's related. I realize I'm not on the reference Ubuntu platform, but surely the difference cannot be that great? It might very well be a bug in aapt or the tools itself. Why would it suddenly stop working? I also experience that the ids in R.java were incorrect, namely that simple findViewById() code would give ClassCastExceptions because of mixed ids the one time, and then work perfectly without any changes bu only a "clean project", in the aftermath of a failing aapt. When I recently was trying to export a signed apk, I ran into another error message (full details from the Eclipse error view) regarding aapt I hadn't seen before. Note here too, that I can just restart Eclipse and can export apks again without problems, at least for a little while. I'm starting to think it is related to lack of memory on my system. The message "onvoldoende geheugen beschikbaar" means "insufficient memory available". I have also been seeing insufficient memory errors in DDMS when I'm dumping HPROF files. • Calling Status Bar notification from method from other class.

  Firstly, I am new to both android and Java. I have two classes, my main.class and Note.class. I am calling the notification method from my Note.class in my main.class when i press a button. The issue is with this line from the Note.class : PendingIntent contentIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, notificationIntent, 0); notification.setLatestEventInfo(context, contentTitle, contentText, contentIntent); When the method is called it force closes. I believe the problem to be with the "this" in PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, notificationIntent, 0);, but I am unsure what to change it to. The notification code works fine if it's in the main class. I would be very grateful for any guidance. I want to add sunspot_rails to my project to add search functionality (with the hope of deploying the project with Heroku). I'm using Rails 3. • Can't get a LiveFolder to launch my activity like it should

  I was able to create a ContentProvider for a LiveFolder, but I can't seem to be able to create my intents correctly, so it always gives "Application is not installed on your phone" errors when clicking on items inside the folder. My Activity is defined like so, in the manifest: <activity android:name=".MyActivity"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" /> </intent-filter> </activity> Then, I create the intents I place in the LiveFolders.INTENT column like this: i = new Intent(); i.setAction(null); i.setClassName("my.package.here", ".MyActivity"); I don't get why this is not working. Maybe I'm making some stupid mistake, but please point me in the right direction.

• ffmpeg libavcodec.so missing while compile with cygwin
