    My hard drive has crashed, and I won't be able to buy a new one for a month or two. I've got a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive that I'd like to have running a persistent ubuntu or ubuntu gnome distro. While it's not the best solution, is it a solution, or is it just a good way to wear out a flash drive? I plan on mostly storing things in Google Drive, so other than wearing out the flash drive, are there any risks involved?

  • Could Wordpress be used/extended as a medium-size ecommerce site? [migrated]

    Is wordpress reliable enough and could it be used with a proper plugin as a medium sized ecommerce site? We are talking around 1500 products here, estimates say around 5 to 10 costumers per day, usually returning ones. Some days none. I have a client who wants to sell online. We are situated in a country where people dont see web as something serious enough. Still, they literally have a budget of pretty much none. And 1500 products to sell online. Magento, or any other open source ecommerce platform are out of the question, there is just no resources for starting something like that. Or any time. Only way is something free, small, absolutely not resource hungry as Wordpress. I have to fight with making it work with only what i have at disposal. Also, if you can recommend any wordpress plugin for the job(WP-ecommerce?), i will be very thankful. I guess something paid, up to maximum 50$ would work too.

  • Simple Cisco ASA 5505 config issue

    I have a Cisco ASA setup with two interfaces: inside: 192.168.2.254 / 255.255.255.0 SecLevel:100 outside: 192.168.3.250 / 255.255.255.0 SecLevel: 0 I have a static route setup to allow PCs on the inside network to access the internet via a gateway on the outside interface (3.254): outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.3.254 This all works fine. I now need to be able to access a PC on the outside interface (3.253) from a PC on the inside interface on port 35300. I understand I should be able to do this with no problems, as I'm going from a higher security level to a lower one. However I can't get any connection. Do I need to set up a seperate static route? Perhaps the route above is overriding what I need to be able to do (is it routing ALL traffic through the gateway?) Any advice on how to do this would be apprecaited.     If I have a property whose display format is dependent on the value of another property in the view model how do I create a display template for it? The combination of field1's display being dependent on field2's value will be used throughout the app and I would like to encapsulate this in a MVC 2 display template. To be more specific, I've already create a display template (Social.ascx) for custom data type Social that masks a social security number for display. For instance, XXX-XX-1234. [DataType("Social")] public string SocialSecurityNumber { get; set; } All employees also have an employeeID. Certain companies use the employee's social security number as either the whole employee id or as part of it. I need to also mask the employeeID if it contains the social. I'd like to create another display template (EmpID.ascx) to perform this task. [DataType("EmpID")] public string EmployeeID { get; set; } The problem is that I don't know how to get both properties in the "EmpID" template to be able to perform the comparison.   • How to display reboot required user notification after installing a custom package in linux?

    After installing a custom package I should force a reboot of the system. I looked at couple of solutions to this use notify-send to display user notification followed by a reboot command, which did work as planned. But the user notification is only shown when I install the package from command line and not when I installed through Software Center. I came across some posts where they suggested adding the following to the postinst script [ -x /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required ] && \ /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required || true Tried including the above in the postinst script but all it does is updating the two files /var/run/reboot-required.pkgs and /var/run/reboot-required with restart information. It neither displayed user-notification nor rebooted the system after package is installed. Is there a way to display reboot required user notification in Ubuntu/Fedora/Open SUSE ?

  • Wrong getBounds() on LineScaleMode.NONE

    I have write a simple example that adds a canvas and draw a rectangle with stroke size 20 scale mode none. The problem is that if I call getBounds() first time I will get a correct result but after I call scale(); the getBounds() function will give me a wrong result. It will take in cosideration the stroke but stroke has scalemode to none and on the screen nothing happens but in the result I will have a x value smaller.   • How to resolve CGDirectDisplayID changing issues on newer multi-GPU Apple laptops in Core Foundation

    In Mac OS X, every display gets a unique CGDirectDisplayID number assigned to it. You can use CGGetActiveDisplayList() or [NSScreen screens] to access them, among others. Per Apple's docs: A display ID can persist across processes and system reboot, and typically remains constant as long as certain display parameters do not change. On newer mid-2010 MacBook Pro's, Apple started using auto-switching Intel/nVidia graphics. Laptops have two GPU's, a low-powered Intel, and a high-powered nVidia. Previous dual-GPU laptops (2009 models) didn't have auto-GPU switching, and required the user to make a settings change, logoff, and then logon again to make a GPU switch occur. Even older systems only had one GPU. There's an issue with the mid-2010 models where CGDirectDisplayID's don't remain the same when a display switches from one GPU to the next. For example: Laptop powers on. Built-In LCD Screen is driven by Intel chipset. Display ID: 30002 External Display is plugged in. Built-In LCD Screen switches to nVidia chipset. It's display ID changes: 30004 External Display is driven by nVidia chipset. ...at this point, the Intel chipset is dormant... User unplugs External Display. Built-In LCD Screen switches back to Intel chipset. It's display ID changes back to original: 30002 My question is, how can I match an old display ID to a new display ID when they alter due to a GPU change? Thought about: I've noticed that the display ID only changes by 2, but I don't have enough test Mac's available to determine if this is common to all new MacBook Pro's, or just mine. Kind of a kludge if "just check for display ID's which are +/-2 from one another" works, anyway. Tried: CGDisplayRegisterReconfigurationCallback(), which notifies before-and-after when displays are going to change, has no matching logic. Unfortunately, it does not return YES if GPU's have changed for a monitor. I can, theoretically, compared just the DisplayProductID and DisplayVendorID keys, but I'm writing end-user software, and am worried of a situation where users have two or more identical monitors plugged in. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

  • power manger keeps on shuting down the display even when i state in the power manger to never do that.

    i'm probably missing something here, i'm using the default ubuntu power manger, i setup it like that: on AC: no screen dimming when ideal. never put computer to sleep. never put display to sleep. on battery i kept the default setting. and still ubuntu does what ever it likes :\ , after 15 min it puts the display to sleep. any one having the same problem and found a way to bypass it? im using eee pc with ubuntu 10.10 desktop.

    I have a service in a very big city, and to make my ads stand out, I display the name of the neighborhood in the display URL, although the actual URL is always the same page with my services for any neighborhood. Will google decrease my rating for this? In a different note, you can also express your ideas about if it's sensible to do this or not, ie, the client might feel I'm deceiving them. Although this will be subjective, unless there is some scientific study. Thank you!

  • Can a local multiplayer iOS game display differently for each device?

    I've seen games which display different data for two devices, but not more than two. If possible, can it be accomplished using GameKit? EDIT: More specifically, I was thinking local multiplayer via bluetooth or wi-fi on an iOS device. Most games I've seen display the same screen synchronized across all of the devices. I understand games that network across the internet do this, often using a server, but I haven't seen any examples of a 3+ device local multiplayer iOS game. I just want to make sure it wasn't some kind of limitation.

    While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

  • How can I operate on the active X display using a command in the console?

    I have problems where compiz freezes and I have to switch to another console(ctrl+alt+F1) to restart. But it would be easier if I could just do "$ compiz --replace" in the other console and not have to lose work or anything. But when I do this it says it can't open the display, makes sense because the display is open in console 7. Is there any way I can easily redirect a command to another console for it to be run there? Like for instance, be in console 1 and execute "$ compiz --replace" on console 7?

    Using Powerpoint viewer (2010), I want to show a Powerpoint show on my secondary display, i.e. the projector, not on my laptop screen. However, Powerpoint viewer always does full screen presentations on the primary display, even if I move the Powerpoint viewer program to the secondary display. Powerpoint and multiple monitors shows how to configure which display a Powerpoint presentation is shown on for the full version of Powerpoint. But how do I do this for Powerpoint viewer? One workaround is to clone monitors rather than having separate monitors displaying different things, but I'm still wondering if there's a better way.

  • Why is my metro screen getting extended to half of the second screen?

    When I extend my desktop to the second screen, it stays fine for a few minutes, but after a while, the first metro screen stretches all the way to half of the second screen. The search bar etc stops working. The desktop itself shares fine. But the metro screen is messed up as well as the resolution. The second screen is using the recommended resolution. All I want is to have an extended screen. The problem occurs in my office Windows 8 laptop as well. Not sure what to do with it.   • Is there an IE8 setting for "minimum font size" to display?

    When I look at our website in IE8 the text we have set to display smaller doesn't display smaller. But when I use BrowserShots.org it shows IE8 renderings with the smaller text appropriately smaller. So I'm thinking that there must be some setting in IE8 for "minimum font size to display". It's not the the TextSize (set to Medium) or Zoom setting (I set/reset zoom to 100%). It's something else. Any ideas?

  • SQL SERVER – MSQL_XP – Wait Type – Day 20 of 28

    In this blog post, I am going to discuss something from my field experience. While consultation, I have seen various wait typed, but one of my customers who has been using SQL Server for all his operations had an interesting issue with a particular wait type. Our customer had more than 100+ SQL Server instances running and the whole server had MSSQL_XP wait type as the most number of wait types. While running sp_who2 and other diagnosis queries, I could not immediately figure out what the issue was because the query with that kind of wait type was nowhere to be found. After a day of research, I was relieved that the solution was very easy to figure out. Let us continue discussing this wait type. From Book On-Line: ?MSQL_XP occurs when a task is waiting for an extended stored procedure to end. SQL Server uses this wait state to detect potential MARS application deadlocks. The wait stops when the extended stored procedure call ends. MSQL_XP Explanation: This wait type is created because of the extended stored procedure. Extended Stored Procedures are executed within SQL Server; however, SQL Server has no control over them. Unless you know what the code for the extended stored procedure is and what it is doing, it is impossible to understand why this wait type is coming up. Reducing MSQL_XP wait: As discussed, it is hard to understand the Extended Stored Procedure if the code for it is not available. In the scenario described at the beginning of this post, our client was using third-party backup tool. The third-party backup tool was using Extended Stored Procedure. After we learned that this wait type was coming from the extended stored procedure of the backup tool they were using, we contacted the tech team of its vendor. The vendor admitted that the code was not optimal at some places, and within that day they had provided the patch. Once the updated version was installed, the issue on this wait type disappeared. As viewed in the wait statistics of all the 100+ SQL Server, there was no more MSSQL_XP wait type found. In simpler terms, you must first identify which Extended Stored Procedure is creating the wait type of MSSQL_XP and see if you can get in touch with the creator of the SP so you can help them optimize the code. If you have encountered this MSSQL_XP wait type, I encourage all of you to write how you managed it. Please do not mention the name of the vendor in your comment as I will not approve it. The focus of this blog post is to understand the wait types; not talk about others. Read all the post in the Wait Types and Queue series. Note: The information presented here is from my experience and there is no way that I claim it to be accurate. I suggest reading Book OnLine for further clarification. All the discussion of Wait Stats in this blog is generic and varies from system to system. It is recommended that you test this on a development server before implementing it to a production server.     Hello. I'm trying to learn how to use a cisco ASA firewall, and I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm trying to set up some egress filtering, with the goal of allowing only the minimal amount of traffic out of the network, even if it originated from within the inside interface. In other words, I'm trying to set up dmz_in and inside_in ACLs as if the inside interface is not too trustworthy. I haven't fully grasped all the concepts yet, so I have a few issues. Assume that we're working with three interfaces: inside, outside, and DMZ. Let's say I have a server (X.Y.Z.1) that has to respond to PING, HTTP, SSH, FTP, MySQL, and SMTP. My ACL looks something like this: access-list outside_in extended permit icmp any host X.Y.Z.1 echo-reply access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq www access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq ssh access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq ftp access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq ftp-data established access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq 3306 access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any host X.Y.Z.1 eq smtp and I apply it like this: access-group outside_in in interface outside My question is, what can I do for egress filtering? I want to only allow the minimal amount of traffic out. Do I just "reverse" the rules (i.e. the smtp rule becomes access-list inside_out extended permit tcp host X.Y.Z.1 any eq smtp ) and call it a day, or can I further cull my options? What can I safely block? Furthermore, when doing egress filtering, is it enough to apply "inverted" rules to the outside interface, or should I also look into making dmz_in and inside_in acls? I've heard the term "egress filtering" thrown around a lot, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Any pointers towards good resources and reading would also be helpful, most of the ones I've found presume that I know a lot more than I do.

That is, are there actually multiple "text" objects, with some existing but no longer having a reference to them held by the local "myText" variable?     I had everything working fine, I use a number of openGL graphics software, example pymol, mgltools, vmd, ballview, rasmol etc. All of these give the error: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". and fail to initialize. I have an i7 asus k53s with nvidia gforce I need these to do my work. I tried the umblebee fix, and just removing all nvidia drivers, or rolling back. I do not know why these were working then stopped, but did notice a new nvidia console in the mu which I assume was from enabling the automatic nvidia feeds, etc? I also played with the xorg, however have no clue what settings are valid. In addition, the display is 50% of the time not recognized now? It just gives a geeic 640x480 and I have to login and out 10 times to get it to return to a normal setting. When I try and set it manual, there is no other setting allowed from the settings menus, and the terminal changes just get re set every time I log out?
